Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wniosków z analizy tekstów na transparentach (i innych nośnikach) niesionych w czasie protestów, które wybuchły po wyroku Trybunału Konstytucyjnego w sprawie dopuszczalności aborcji. W badaniach wykorzystano techniki i metody multimodalnej analizy dyskursu, wyrastającej z semiotyki społecznej oraz wirtualnej etnografii. Autor skupił się na strategiach dyskursywnych, które stosowali protestujący. W tekście przeanalizowany został własny kod demonstrantów. Wykazano, że przekazy te są silnie intertekstualne i innowacyjne, spełniały także funkcję ludyczną i fatyczną. W artykule omówiono także funkcję wulgaryzmów, których stosowanie jest według autora celową strategią. Charakter przekazów politycznych sprawiał jednak, że pewna grupa odbiorców była wykluczona z tej komunikacji politycznej, nie mogąc zrozumieć makrosądu transparentu.

Nijakowski explores public discourses and discursive mechanisms related to concepts of nation and race, which, in the process of genocidal mobilisation, helped cast victims as people excluded from the world of moral obligation (Fein). Drawing on a macrocausal comparative historical approach to genocide and other crimes Nijakowski examines how the perpetrators conceptualised the victims of genocide. He discusses selected death marches as texts, focusing on the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire during the peak of the massacres in 1915-16. He also described the process of “embodying discourse” in the death marches, when an abstract notion of the victims was produced even as their bodies were degraded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The essay answers the question of whether ecocide occurred in the region of Upper Silesia. The paper includes a brief discussion on the concept of ecocide. The paper presents two cases of ecocide - one in West Papua and the other in Darfur. The prognosis of climate genocide in the future is also presented. The text argues that there was no intentional ecocide of Silesians in Upper Silesia, although ecological discrimination against them was observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses five non-formal institutions of rape from the perspectives of historical sociology and genocide studies, distinguishing types of rape on the basis of a comparative historical analysis of ten cases: (1) rape as reward for soldiers and other combatants; (2) rape as a method of initiating soldiers, integrating the military group, and legitimating masculinity; (3) rape as an offensive institution, fulfilling two functions: (3.1) symbolic attack on an enemy group; (3.2) increasing damage/cost to the enemy by making their lives harder in terms of trauma to women, the raising of unwanted children, and so on; (4) rape as a method of ethnic cleansing; (5) rape as a form of genocide. The five types of rape are regarded as institutions: expressions of culturally fixed values and norms which determine accepted goals and the methods of attaining those goals and are embedded in the subcultures of particular organizations (the army, the police, party militia groups, etc.). Not every rape is related to these institutions. In this sense, rapes can be regarded by members of a particular organization as justified or unjustified. This article analyses the manner in which the German minority in the Opole region, whose members belong to the Social-Cultural Society of Germans in Opole Silesia, participates in Poland's political life, using the example of the 2019 national election campaign. The campaign has shown that the German minority in the Opole region, in fact, forms an ethnic political party. The old dichotomy between symbolic politics (the reproduction of identity) and the pursuit of common interests is no longer valid. The German minority strives to achieve both these objectives. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the supply of selected vitamins and minerals in the daily food rations of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia., Methods: 62 schizophrenia patients (32 women and 30 men aged 21-64, the mean age of women was 41.3 ± 11.2, the mean age of men was 36.1 ± 9.7) took part in the study. A 24-hour diet recall from 3 weekdays and 1 weekend day was used for quantitative assessment of the diet., Results: In the conducted research, it was shown that, despite ensuring the average supply of energy required for a given age and sex group, the food rations of patients of both sexes were characterized by a deficiency of vitamin D, folates, potassium, calcium, and also vitamins E and C, magnesium in men as well as iron and iodine in women. Excessive amounts of vitamins B2, B6, sodium, and phosphorus were found in food rations of persons of both sexes and vitamins A, B1, niacin in food rations of women and also vitamin B12 in food rations of men., Conclusions: No supplementation of schizophrenia patients' diet is recommended; it is only justified in individual cases of patients in whom vitamin and mineral deficiencies were found on the basis of analysis of their food habits. However, it is necessary to provide each schizophrenia patient with appropriate food education that will allow them to choose products that contain all nutrients needed for proper functioning of the body, including the central nervous system.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional value of the food intake in the group of men and women suffering from recurrent affective disorders and schizophrenia, and also to determine the relation between selected nutritional parameters with anthropometric indices defining the nutritional status of the subjects., Methods: 219 persons participated in the study (61 patients with recurrent depressive disorders, 60 patients with schizophrenia and 98 healthy volunteers). A24-hour dietary recall was used in the quantitative assessment of the diet. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements as well as body composition analysis were used to assess the nutritional status., Results: It was shown that women with depression and schizophrenia had a significantly higher content of both visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue as compared with the control group. A diet with a higher content of energy from protein, a higher supply of calcium promoted a lower fat content in the bodies of women suffering from depression (no such relationship was observed in the group of men). In the group of patients with schizophrenia, a diet with a lower supply of energy promoted a lower BMI value, waist circumference, lower waist-hip ratio and a lower fat content in the body., Conclusions: An improper energy structure and an improper content of nutrients can, in the future, contribute to the development of many somatic diseases, thus leading to deterioration of life quality of subjects and preventing the maintenance of mental health.

Introduction: Activity of factor VIII (FVIII) increased above 150% of reference range predisposes to venous thromboembolism (VTE). The aim of this study was to identify predictors of increased FVIII activity in patients following VTE., Materials and Methods: 241 (38% men) patients presented due to objectively documented VTE episode at least 3 months ago were included in this study. FVIII activity was measured using a clotting assay on the analyzer BCS XP., Results: Among 241 patients with VTE, activity of FVIII above 150% (FVIII ≥ 150%) was observed in 96 (40%). These patients were older (p = 0.035) and their concentrations of fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP) were higher by 12% and 88% (p < 0.001), respectively, compared with other patients. There was a positive correlation between FVIII and fibrinogen (r = 0.34; p < 0.001), FVIII and CRP (r = 0.30; p < 0.001). Type of treatment, time from the VTE episode and type of VTE were not associated with FVIII. Twenty patients (8%) had activity of FVIII increased above 200% (FVIII > 200%) and this group was also older (p = 0.015), more patients in that group had obesity (p = 0.015), idiopathic VTE (p = 0.043), less of them had positive family history (p = 0.010) and they were characterized by fibrinogen and CRP increased by 28% (p < 0.001) and 102% (p = 0.004), respectively, compared with patients with FVIII between 150-200%. Independent predictors of FVIII ≥ 150% were: fibrinogen (p < 0.001), bilirubin (p = 0.002), hemoglobin (p = 0.016), glucose (p = 0.040), CRP (p = 0.023), total homocysteine (p = 0.032). Fibrinogen was the only independent predictor of FVIII > 200% (p = 0.016)., Conclusions: The activity of FVIII in patients after VTE episode is influenced by age, concentration of fibrinogen, bilirubin, hemoglobin, glucose, CRP and homocysteine. Our results suggest the role of environmental factors, mainly inflammatory response in maintaining elevated FVIII activity following VTE.

Periodic abstinence and coitus interruptus are the most popular methods of contraception in Poland. Recent studies have provided us with evidence that the so-called "menstrual calendar" may be much less effective than it was believed. In these circumstances, promotion and use of safe and truly effective contraceptives is very important for Polish women. Emergency contraception (EC) is a method which could be used even in cases when other contraception methods have failed. Mechanism of action of levonorgestrel used for EC and possible disturbances in the process of implantation of the blastocyst in the endometrium, remain the source of heated discussion among medical professionals. The latest publications provide us with evidence that the use of levonorgestrel in EC neither alters endometrial receptivity nor impedes implantation. Hormonal EC effectiveness is another hot topic of gynecological endocrinology and statistics. There is, however, no better, safer, and more ethically accepted method of preventing unwanted pregnancy for patients in need of postcoital contraception.

The ultrasonographic assessment of fetal lung maturity by evaluating the elasticity of lung tissue, Dynamic Lung Score (DLS) has been being performed since 1986 in ObGyn Department in Tychy (Medical University of Silesia). The lung elasticity is evaluated on the cross sections of fetal thorax, on the level of heart ventricles. The result of the evaluation is given as the three degree scale, in which I degree indicates the lack of elasticity and fetal lung immaturity, II degrees indicates partially expressed elasticity, corresponding with incomplete maturity of lung tissue, and III degrees represents full elasticity and indicates complete maturity of fetal lungs. This study was designed to compare fetal pulmonary artery blood flow with the maturity of fetal lung tissue evaluated during the ultrasonographic assessment of fetal lung tissue elasticity. The examination was performed on pregnant women, beginning on 27th week gestation. During the examination the mean Pulsatility Index was decreased, particularly in fetuses with II degrees lung maturity. The Resistance Index (RI) was found to be stable and independent of gestational age. In the group with I degree lung maturity (DLS I), the mean PI = 2.643 (+/- 0.229), mean RI = 0.879 (+/- 0.036), in DLS II group PI = 2.039 (+/- 0.262), RI = 0.868 (+/- 0.037), and in DLS III group PI = 2,500 (+/- 0.100), RI = 0.900 (+/- 0.100). Comparing the ultrasonographic evaluation of fetal lung maturity with fetal pulmonary artery blood flow allows more accurate assessment of fetal lung maturity. Fetal lung maturity can not be evaluated univocally on the basis of blood flow assessment. Because of the divergence of blood flow parameters further studies including bigger population seem to be necessary for verification of the results and for establishing the reference values.

Objective: In peri- and postmenopausal women, the association of skin thickness with bone mass is well described, and a low skin thickness is a useful predictor of osteoporosis. In this study the association between skin thickness and bone mass of lumbar spine in peri- and postmenopausal women was assessed; and the potential for skin thickness as a screening test for osteoporosis evaluated., Design/methods: Skin thickness was measured at the arm by ultrasonography (probe 22 MHz). Bone mass was measured at lumbar spine by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. One hundred and three peri- and postmenopausal women were studied., Result: Successive decrease of skin thickness going along with the loss of lumbar spine bone mass was found. There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in skin thickness between group of females with normal bone mass and group with osteoporosis., Conclusions: Ultrasound skin measurement is a very simple method which can be used in the diagnostics of osteoporosis of the lumbar spine in peri- and postmenopausal women.

Central neural system congenital malformations in the form of neural tube defects (ntd) belong to the most common diseases leading to very serious childrens' disability and mortality. As it has been calculated, the number of children affected with ntd, delivered in Poland every year is in the range of 800-1150. Children with encephalocele participate in this number in app. 50%. As it has been found, morbidity and mortality caused by the ntd remain high and stable in Poland for the last 20 years. In the view of very limited possibilities of the treatment offered by health services, prophylactic measures remain the best methods for limitation of the problem. The primary prevention of ntd was discovered in late seventies. It has been found that folic acid added to the diet of women in the reproductive age reduced number of children born with ntd by 70%. Authors present the Programme of Primary Prevention of ntd in Poland. This Programme has been incorporated in the National Programme of Health for the Nation 1996-2005.

Incidence of neural tube defects in Poland in the 90's was 2.68 in 1000 births. The value of incidence has not been changed within last twenty years. Mortality caused by neural tube defects in Poland is much higher than in many other European countries and the United States. High rates of incidence of neural tube defects in Poland is probably caused by low utilisation of methods of secondary prevention in a group of low-risk pregnant women. Since methods of primary prevention of neural-tube defects are available; primary prevention with folic acid, should be immediately implemented in Poland.

The aim of study was to evaluate incidence of GDM in Poland. All 1500 pregnant women between 24-28 week's gestation consulted in 4 centers were offered a 50 g oral glucose test (screening test). Capillary blood glucose was measured at 60 min after glucose ingestion. When blood glucose > 140 mg/dl, 75 g OGTT according to WHO criteria was performed. 241 women have abnormal screening test and in 181 cases blood glucose were at range 140-160 mg/dl, in 39 at range 160-180 and 21 were > 180 mg/dl. Only 14 women in the first group (140-160 mg/dl) have diagnosed GDM (7.7%). In second group 24 pregnant women have GDM (61.5%). Overall GDM incidence is shown to be 3.7% (57 women). The mean age for the GDM was 28.8 +/- 0.9 years compared with 26.4 +/- 0.4 years (p < 0.05) uncomplicated pregnancy.

Neural tube defects (ntd) remain unresolved therapeutic problems, even for contemporary health services. Prophylactic measures are the best methods for limitation of the problem. In many countries, the number of children born with ntd has been reduced significantly, even in 4-5 folds. Authors found that the situation in Poland remains stable since last 20 years. Epidemiological evaluation of the ntd morbidity in Poland is very difficult. There is no National Register of Inherited Defects. Authors observed and analysed mortality and hospitalisation due to ntd in Poland, in early ninetees, and compared these data with information originated from Regional (Wielkopolska) Inherited Defects Register. It was found that ntd mortality and hospitalisation in Wielkopolska was similar to average in Poland. It has been estimated that the rate of children born with ntd in Poland, in 1995 was 2.68 per 1000 live and stillbriths (in 1972-1974 was 2.04). Especially high rates of ntd's have been found in north-eastern part of Country. Incidence of ntd's was higher in rural, than in urban population of the Country.

Increasing cesarean-section rates have focused attention on variation in the use of this procedure that appear to be not only dependent of medical indication. This suggestion has been checked on the basis of newly implemented special forms in hospitals located in some areas of Poland in 1990. Documentation of 11.813 live births (almost 100% of live births in described area) has been analysed. It has been found 13.2% cesarean-section rate and 2.0% rate of other operative deliveries. Majority of cesarean sections have been medically indicated. But it has been also found that highest level of mothers education has been directly linked with higher rates of cesarean section. This linkage has been stronger than any other association (with age, parity etc.). Poland as a country, is divided for several regions subordinated to particular hospitals. It has been found that some of the patients have been admitted not to regional hospitals. We conclude that cesarean section rate among these patients was higher than this same ratio among all other patients admitted for deliveries in these hospitals. This association cannot be accounted for by differences in maternal age, parity, birth weight etc.

The described case illustrates the diagnostic difficulties in incarceration of abdominal organs in diaphragmatic hiatus hernia. The absence of characteristic symptoms and sudden deterioration of the general condition are causes of delay in surgical intervention leading, sometimes, to extensive necrosis of organs. The reported patient had extensive necrosis of gastric wall due to its incarceration in diaphragmatic hiatus hernia.
