Henryk Sienkiewicz travelled to America in 1876. He sent letters from his journey to the Warsaw Publishing House of "Gazeta Polska" ("The Polish Gazette") that published them in column serials. Soon, Listy z podróźy do Ameryki (Portrait of America) was issued in a book form. A critical edition of the author's entire output was prepared in 1950 by Julian Krzyżanowski. The letters' manuscripts are lost. A careful analysis of Sienkiewicz's account proves that the printed text contains many errors, most probably an effect of the handwriting's improper deciphering by the Warsaw compositor of "Gazette." Vast majority of the errors later entered into the subsequent editions, including the critical one by Krzyżanowski. Numerous misprints are visible in the spelling of American toponyms. The 19
th c. maps help to eradicate them. Errors are also found in proper names of real figures, and here correction can be helped by the everyday American press from the years of Sienkiewicz's travels. Contaminations of the Portraits with errors allow to state that the anonymous compositor became a co-author of this American report. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

TRANSLITERATION ,AUTOGRAPHS ,CYPRIOTS ,HISTORIANS ,SCHOLARS - Abstract
The review is a discussion concerning an edition of the autograph transliteration of Cyprian Norwid's Vade-mecum prepared by Mateusz Grabowski--an invaluable help for textologists, philologists, literary historians, and Norwid scholars in their studies on the poetic collection's text. The reviewer attempts to disclose the researcher-editor's workshop, showing their substantial successes in striving with the complicated content matter of the autograph (a new reading of draft notes), but also unveils less numerable places that may be dubious or even arouse opposition (erroneous commentaries or improper management of the text's variants). The discovery of the literary journal from the travels of Juliusz Słowacki to Greece, Egypt and Palestine (1836-1837) allows to commence new investigations to and revise textological-editorial analyses of a dozen of the author's lyrical works. The most current state of research and the frame of reference for the whole notebook can be found in the three-volume collective publication dedicated to the manuscript (Raptularz wschodni Juliusza Słowackiego áJuliusz Słowacki's Eastern Notebookñ, vol. 1-3, Warszawa 2019). The subject of this work are two Egyptian-themed poems, unpublished by the poet and available in manuscript only: [Rozmowa z piramidami] ([A Conversation with the Pyramids]) and Pieśń na Nilu (A Song on the Nile). The new reading of the autographs, correlated with a contextual analysis of the manuscript and the critical reflection on the editorial tradition, leads to a new interpretive proposals and a suggestions to change the philological shape of both texts. [Rozmowa z piramidami] ([A Conversation with the Pyramids]) and Pieśń na Nilu (A Song on the Nile) are a peculiar "sepulchral diptych," and together with the series of five texts [Listy poetyckie z Egiptu] ([Poetic Letters from Egypt]), they form a truly fascinating record of the existential experience and poetic reflection of Słowacki, originated in his great Eastern journey. The goal of the paper is to present the attribution and codicological analysis of a manuscript currently stored at Biblioteca civica Angelo Mai in Bergamo (sign. MM 378). The paper describes the manuscript codicologically, also hypothesizing as to its presence in the Bergamo library. Based on a manuscript annotation on the codex’s upper pastedown, I argue that it was intended as a gift for one of the Załuski family. On the basis of the printed correspondence between Józef Andrzej Załuski and Angelo Maria Querini, it may be assumed that Codex MM 378 was among the parcels containing manuscripts from the circle of Stanisław Hosius that the Italian librarian intended to send to Załuski. The boxes with the codices never reached the Polish librarian due to the tardiness of the messenger, Jacques David Frédéric Perard. It is claimed here that both the inscriptions and images in the code are authored by Tomasz Treter. The manuscript’s attribution was based on palaeographic analysis (comparing the handwriting with Treter’s epistolography stored in the archives in Kraków and Olsztyn). According to the dates included in the code, the inscriptions were made between 20 June 1569 and 2 March 1575. The manuscript thus represents the earliest known evidence of Treter’s artistic activity. The autograph contains some previously unknown emblems by Treter, and a preliminary design of the emblem work Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio (published 1612). As many as 51 sketches in the manuscript overlap with the emblematic icons of the 1612 printing, all of which are more symbolic (hieroglyphic) representations of Christian virtues known from Treter’s printing, while there are no sketches of icons in the printed book referring to specific biblical scenes. Therefore, there is still uncertainty about the authorship of these compositions, which also differ in the quality of rendition from the previously mentioned ones. Comparing the autograph with the artist’s later published work offers insight into his technique. The drawings in the manuscript show very clear inspiration of Claude Paradin, Gabriel Syméon, Aneau Barthélemy and Andrea Alciato, which is not always conspicuous in the printed version. The analysis includes the final note, mentioning imprese with the painter Lorenzo Lotto, which explains correspondences between this artist’s work and the emblems from Symbolica vitae Christi meditatio. AUTOGRAPHS ,SONATA ,MUSICIANS ,AWARENESS ,MANUSCRIPTS ,ANALOGY - Abstract
Musicians attach increasing importance to the selection of edition they use for playing. There is a growing awareness of the influence of score material selection on interpretation. Historical performance raises the bar as well by encouraging the use of autographs, manuscripts and first editions. Thanks to referring to historical materials, we can quickly appreciate the effort of contemporary editors who – once publishing scores today – make them much more accessible. It would seem that basing one’s interpretation on an urtext edition should be a perfect solution combining today’s clarity with historical truth. The analysis shows, however, that even these trustworthy urtext editions differ from one another, thus differ from the autograph. Using Sonata in A Minor D 385 by Franz Schubert as an example, the article shows different approaches to music text edition. There are distinct ways in which editors interpret articulation, dynamics, and even sound pitch. The biggest number of differences can be found in terms of articulation, which it largely connected with the necessity to read handwritten material. Unambiguous deciphering (and exact placement) of numerous music markings can sometimes be downright impossible. That is why editors often use the method which consists in searching for analogies between fragments and parts, yet this method does not always seem right. As performance practice shows, treating each part individually, playing a similar fragment in a dissimilar way, often brings interesting results interpretation-wise. The article encourages own experiments, using doubts as material for interpretation, and using the benefits of contemporary editions cautiously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MUSEUM exhibits ,ART museums ,SCIENCE publishing ,AUTOGRAPHS ,EXHIBITIONS ,ART collecting - Abstract
The museum established in the Wilanów residence by Stanisław Kostka Potocki was the first art museum in Poland. Today, on the bicentenary of the death of its founder, we reflect upon the activities and prospects for research on Potocki's legacy conducted with the participation of the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów. In 2014, in cooperation with the Winckelmann Society, the Museum initiated the project "Johann Joachim Winckelmann i/und Stanisław Kostka Potocki. Nowe badania i dokumenty/Neue Forschungen und Dokumente", aimed at studying the influence of Winckelmann's works on art collecting in Central Europe, including the activity of Stanisław Kostka Potocki. As part of the project, a German translation of Potocki's most important work, O sztuce u dawnych, czyli Winkelman Polski, has been published. The popularisation of Potocki's output is also carried out by way of organising numerous scientific conferences and publishing studies on his literary legacy (cf. O spuściźnie literackiej Stanisława Kostki Potockiego. Studia i szkice), political activity (M. Getka-Kenig, Stanisław Kostka Potocki. Studium magnackiej kariery w dobie upadku i "wskrzeszenia" Polski), the ways of developing his collection of works of art, as well as the stories of individual objects therein, such as the image of the Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci or the portrait of Stanisław Kostka Potocki by Jacques-Louis David. At the same time, research is being carried out on Potocki's collection itself, as well as on his manuscripts and letters. The results of this research are presented in the form of exhibitions organised by the Museum ("Leonardiana in Polish Collections") and numerous articles published in Wilanów Studies. The profound change, currently underway, of the profile of both the permanent and temporary exhibitions in the interiors of the Wilanów Palace aims to emphasise the significance of the Enlightenment idea of collecting as practised by Stanisław Kostka Potocki. The section of the exhibition on the first floor of the palace, presenting the art collecting achievements of the third generation of the Potocki family in Wilanów, will be made available to the public in 2022. POLITICAL parties ,SUICIDE ,AUTOGRAPHS ,ARCHIVES ,SISTERS ,ELECTRONIC publications - Abstract
The review contains a scrutiny of an edition of Bronisława Waligórska's Listy z cytadeli 1886 (Letters from the Citadel 1886; Warsaw 2018) and a characteristics of the series "Archiwum Kobiet" ("Women Archive") which starts the mentioned series. The publication in question offers a documentary edition of a dozen or so handwritten letters by a member of "proletariat" political party to her sister composed in the year 1886 in The Warsaw citadel where Bronisława Waligórska committed suicide, a reconstruction of the investigation, and the epistolographer's biography. Assumptions of the series "Archiwum Kobiet" ("Women Archive") are also subject of the review. The reviewer describes the guidelines for publishing woman private documents proposed by Monika Rudaś-grodzka and the committee to the series, and attempts to evaluate the adopted editorial and biographical solutions. MANUSCRIPTS ,PERSECUTION ,AUTOGRAPHS ,MONKS ,RELIGIONS - Abstract
The paper is a description of an anonymous manuscript, treasured in The Kórnik Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the content of the said manuscript refers to the paper published October 16th, 1845, of an article Les Religieuses basiliennes de Minsk (The Basilian Monks of Minsk) in the French "L'Ami de religion et du Roi" ("A Friend of Religion and the King") that relates the course of the supposed persecutions of a Basilian abyss, Makryna Mieczysławska, by the apostate bishop Józef Siemaszko. Tracing the circumstances of Mieczysławska's "Poznań case," the authors prove that the manuscript is not the only evidence that links the Kórnik manour of the Działyński family with the issue of the alleged abyss of the Minsk Basilians. Additionally, contrasting the manuscript in question with other handwritten and press sources allows the authors to indicate the field of further research in the political confabulation story of Makryna Mieczysławska. YEAR ,AUTOGRAPHS ,LETTERS ,MANUSCRIPTS ,PORTRAITS - Abstract
The analysis of a volume with Maurycy Mochnacki's and Kamil Mochnacki's letters to parents published in the year 1863, the first edition of the correspondence, reveals a number of editorial operations that serve the creation of the senders' images and discloses the 19th c. characteristic strategies of composing "biographic portraits" in advance. In the volume in question, an important function is played by the numerous non-authorial deviations from the manuscript that deform the style and sense of the original account. They are most clearly visible in Maurycy Mochnacki's two letters dated July 25th, 1834, and September 2nd, 1834, the manuscripts of which have only recently become the object of a detailed textological analysis. Since the handwritings of the two letters differ from the first edition to such an extent that they should be regarded as non-identical (over 100 differences), the handwritten versions are published here. Until this day, only the deformed letters were known and quoted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
