- Abstract
This paper analyzes and synthesizes the literature on primary care specialty choice. Motivation for choosing medicine and its impact on recruitment to different types of medical work has been presented. Factors that influence medical students and young doctors to change specialty preference have also been explored. Variables, such as gender, martial status, age, income expectations and prestige, that affect medical students' specialty selection decisions for primary care, have been examined. Personality profiles of primary care physician have been evaluated and the influence of communication skills and knowledge of social psychology on his/her work have been analyzed. It is presented that other traits, such as patient-centeredness, needs to serve society and value orientation, is also associated with increases in numbers of students choosing primary care. The analyze shows that the preference for primary care is connected with being interested in diverse patients and health problems and also with being people-orientated. A survey conducted into Polish medical students' attitudes to primary care and family medicine is presented. There is a negative perception of family medicine among Polish students and doctors because of its long work hours and less time for family, insufficient diagnostic possibilities and monotony It is chosen because of lack of other possibilities, difficulties in employment and opportunity to become 'a specialist' in short time.

Introduction: Bibliometric analysis became a separate scientific discipline, frequently used to evaluate the output of research institutes. Objective: The aim of this study was the assessment of Polish contribution to the development of world dermatology between 1994 and 2005. Material and methods: The evaluation of Polish dermatological achievements was based on the frequency of Polish publications in eight prestigious dermatological journals divided in two groups: group A consisted of four mostly cited dermatological journals, and group B contained further four, meticulously selected, well known journals with a special interest on clinical aspects of dermatology. Results: Among 14.893 analyzed publications, we have identified a total of 70 papers, in which the first author (n=51; 72.86%) or one of co-authors (n=19; 27.14%) worked in Poland. Twenty eight (40%) were published in group A journals and 42 (60%) in group B journals. In group A, papers with Polish authorship accounted for only 0.27% of all publication, whereas in group B Polish reports constituted 0.93% of all papers. (group A vs. group B: p<0.001). In group A journals Polish papers were usually originals reports (n=22; 78.57%), rarely other types of publications were noted (n=6; 21.43%). In group B original articles also predominated (n=19; 45.24%), but Polish authors also published case reports (n=11; 26.19%) and review papers (n=7; 16.67%) (group A vs. group B: p=0.03). Conclusions: Polish researchers were the authors of a very small percentage of all published dermatological reports. It seems, that this undesirable observations could be changed only by increase of funds for dermatology in Poland. Scholarships dedicated for institutions that perform studies in the field of dermatology would substantially support this discipline. Hopefully, joining the European Union by Poland will have a positive impact on the development of dermatology in our country and, as a consequence, this discipline will be recognized by others as one of the leading Polish sciences. MEDICAL ethics ,AESTHETICS ,MEDICINE ,HISTORY of medicine - Abstract
Written on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Poland’s Poznań University, this article re-examines the paper, “Aesthetics in Medicine,” which Heliodor Święcicki, noted gynecologist and former Poznań University vice-chancellor, delivered in Kraków during the XI Convention of Polish Physicians and Naturalists in 1911. It is acknowledged as one of the most interesting papers in the history of Polish medicine devoted to aesthetics. The author details the main points and ideas that Święcicki had expressed vis-à-vis aesthetics and medical care, and he underscores his main point: that aesthetics and medical ethics are equal, that beauty is tied inexorably to moral values, and that aesthetics must guide ethics in medicine.

- Abstract
This paper is a work on the health conditions of the inhabitants of Rzeszów and the surrounding area in the second half of the 19th century as based on the mortality analysis. A comparison and contrast has been made between the daily work of a doctor nowadays and a hundred years ago. The issues have been presented at various levels, with reference to the political, socio-economic and cultural relations existing at that time. The work is enhanced with additional comments on the doctor's profession and the problem of diagnostic difficulties as well as the possibility of making a mistaken judgement. Additionally, the definition of death at that time and at present has been formulated. The issues of colleague solidarity, ethical and moral issues and the activities of the Doctors' Association over the above mentioned period are also discussed. I noted the "plague" of the time which was the provision of medical treatment by the unqualified. The above considerations may be a starting point for the present, popular discussion on the principles of a doctor's ethics and duty.
