Aims: Wheelchair basketball athletes, as a group of people with spinal cord injury, are at risk for upper cross syndrome. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of a corrective exercise program based on scapular stability on upper cross syndrome in wheelchair basketball athletes. Materials & Methods: In this semi-experimental study that was conducted in 2017-2018, 24 veteran and handicapped wheelchair basketball athletes who had spinal cord injury with upper cross syndrome in Mashhad were selected by purposive sampling method and divided into control (n=12) and case (n=12) groups. A corrective exercise program based on scapular stability were administered to the case group for 8 weeks. Camera and flexible ruler tools were used to measure forward head, rounded shoulder and kyphosis, respectively. Data analysis was performed by SPSS 23 software using independent t-test, paired t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey’s post hoc test. Findings: The severity of forward head, rounded shoulder and kyphosis abnormalities was less in class 3 than in class 1 and 2. Objective: Upper Crossed Syndrome (UCS) is a disorder caused by muscle imbalance of the upper quadrant of the body. Using National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) protocol for corrective exercises is one of the new approaches to restore muscle balance, and prevent/correct postural abnormalities. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effect of an 8-week NASM corrective exercise program on UCS. Methods: Participants were 30 female students with forward head > 46 degrees, forward shoulder > 52 degree and thoracic kyphosis > 42 degrees, who were selected using a purposive sampling method and then randomly divided into control and intervention groups. The intervention group received corrective exercise program for eight weeks, three sessions per week. Forward head and shoulder angles were measured using side photography, and thoracic kyphosis angle was measured using a flexible ruler (r=0.093) before and after intervention. Paired t-test and analysis of covariance were used for data analysis at the significance level of P≤0.05. Results: The mean angles of forward head, forward shoulder and thoracic kyphosis decreased significantly after 8 weeks of NASM corrective exercise in the intervention group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Corrective trainers and therapists are advised to regularly use the NASM corrective exercise program proposed in this study for UCS patients.

Background and Objective: Patients with spinal cord injury suffer from continuous and persistent neuropathic pain that has a destructive impact on their quality of life. Exercise therapy is one of the non-pharmacological interventions that is recommended to control chronic pain, This study aimed to determine the effect of exercise program on neuropathic pain intensity in patients with paraplegia Spinal Cord Injury. Materials and Method: This study is a clinical trial.that population was the all of the patients with spinal cord injury, who referred to one of the educational hospitals in Tehran in 2014, 40 patient were selected based on purposive sampling and were randomly allocated into two groups of experimental and control. Exercise program for paraplegia spinal cord injury was implemented in experimental group during twelve 45-60minutes sessions, twice a week. Data collection was done before and one week after the intervention through using personal information form and, The International Spinal Cord Injury Pain Basic Data Set. Data were analyzed with statistical software SPSS19 and Fisher's exact test, Independent samples T-test Paired T-test and Chi square. Results: The mean score of neuropathic pain intensity before the intervention was 8.05 ± 1.51 in intervention group and 7.57 ± 1.21 in the control group. These amounts after the intervention were 5.55 ± 1.61 and 7.37 ± 1.05 respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Results showed that the regular exercise program can reduce neuropathic pain severity in patients with spinal cord injuries and it can be recommended as a non-pharmacological method of pain control in these patients.
