Background and purpose: Osteoporosis and periodontitis are two diseases associated with bone loss and are common among postmenopausal women. There are many contradictory results on the effect of osteoporosis on periodontal tissue. This study aimed to determine the association between osteoporosis and periodontal status in postmenopausal women. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was part of the second phase of the Amir kola Health and Aging Project (AHAP), in which 210 postmenopausal women were randomly divided into three groups (n=70 per group); normal bone density group, osteopenic group, and osteoporotic group. Periodontal status was measured using Periodontal Disease Index (PDI), Plaque Index (PI), and Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Data were analyzed in SPSS V17 applying ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The average age of the participants was 65.24±4.36 years. There were no statistically significant differences between the mean OHI (2.26±1.40), PDI (2.76±1.42), and PI (1.23±0.87) in the osteoporotic group, and the mean OHI (2.01±1.62), PDI (2.56±1.61), and PI (1.35±0.91) in the osteopenia group, and mean OHI (1.73±1.37), PDI (2.47±1.43), and PI (1.23±0.87) in the normal group (P>0.05). The OHI, PDI, and PI had a slight but insignificant negative correlation with BMD. Conclusion: According to this study, there is no link between osteoporosis and periodontal status in postmenopausal women.

Background and Objective: Periodontal disease is one of the most common chronic oral diseases worldwide. A variety of foods may affect periodontal health. Due to the importance of periodontal health in the old age, this study was designed to investigate the association between carbohydrate intake and periodontal health in the elderly in Amirkola, northern Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study is part of the second phase of the Amirkola Health and Ageing Project (AHAP). The evaluated participants included 400 elderly people (200 men and 200 women). Socio-demographic data of all subjects were recorded in the information form. Periodontal status, including plaque index (PI), periodontal disease index (PDI) and Oral Hygiene Index (OHI) were evaluated. Then, the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) was completed in order to receive daily carbohydrates in grams per day for all Participants. Then, the relationship between carbohydrate intake and periodontal health was evaluated. Findings: The participants consumed an average of 316±102.4 gr/day carbohydrates. The mean range of PI, OHI, PDI and in the high carbohydrate intake (>300 gr) group were 2.18±1.39, 2.84±1.51 and 1.51±0.86, respectively, and this rate was lower than the group with low carbohydrate intake (

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic periodontitis is a slow-growing inflammatory disease that often occurs in adults. In the elderly, periodontal indices may also change due to a number of psychological factors, such as depression and consequent changes in cortisol levels. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the relationship between depression and periodontal indices in the elderly in Amirkola, Northern Iran. METHODS: This case-control study, which is part of the second phase of the Amirkola Health and Ageing Project (AHAP) to investigate the health status of the elderly in this city, was performed on 300 elderly people. After examination, subjects were divided into two groups: periodontitis (n=100) and control (n=200). In both groups, the presence of depressive symptoms was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), in which a score of 5 or higher is a sign of depression, and periodontal indices including OHIS and PDI were examined based on PDI≥4 periodontitis criterion. Then, the two groups were compared in terms of the association between periodontal indices and depression. FINDINGS: In this study, 133 were female (44.3%) and 167 were male (55.7%). 35 patients (35%) in the case group and 61 patients (30.5%) in the control group had symptoms of depression. The mean GDS score in patients with periodontitis (3.70±3.68) was slightly higher than healthy individuals (3.49±3.40), but no significant correlation was observed between GDS and PDI. Old age, male gender, lower level of education and smoking were higher in patients with periodontitis, which was statistically significant only in smoking and level of education (p=0.042 and p=0.009, respectively). In this study, a positive and weak relationship was observed between age and PDI (r=0.19 and p=0.001). CONCLUSION: The results showed that there is a relationship between periodontal indices and depression. Although it was not statistically significant, it is clinically noteworthy.

In the current research the effectiveness of cognitive therapy based on Mindfulness has been investigated on the reduction of posttraumatic stress symptoms and increasing the Autobiographical memory and quality of life in treated patients with breast cancer. The current research is a quasi experimental research with pretest-post-test and control group in a 60-day follow up.24 treated women with breast cancer were selected among the age of 25 to 55 who went to radiation and oncology department of Chamran , Baghiyatallah , Besat and surgery department of Eram clinic and were placed in two experimental and control groups.12 healthy women were also selected (without any history of illness) that were made homogenous in variables of age , level of education , marital status and occupation. SCID interview , autobiographical memory test (AMT),quality of life questionnaire (QLQ) and revised impact of events scale were carried out .The experimental group had been under MBCT training for eight 2-2.5- hour- sessions. Results were analyzed by the use of 18th copy of SPSS software. Applying covariance analysis indicated that MBCT training courses are effective in the reduction of posttraumatic stress symptoms and increase in the quality of life .Also considering the results obtained in follow up ,it can be said that this method can be effective in reduction and prevention of PTSD from getting worse and increasing the Autobiographical memory in treated patients with breast cancer. applying MBCT in medical centers can be considered as a rehabilitation treatment after treating and can play an important role in solving many physical and mental problems that lessens the quality of life

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As an important achievement in industrialization and urbanization, depression can be much related to the oral hygiene especially periodontal indexes which are a symbol of tooth and oral hygiene and their surrounding tissues. The purpose of this study was to compare the periodontal indexes in individuals with and without depression disorders.METHODS: The present study was carried out in the form of a questionnaire, examination, and recording in the information form. The subjects were divided into two groups of 50 a group included the patients suffering from depression who hospitalized in Neuropsychology ward of Panje Azar hospital in Gorgan, Iran and the control group included either the patients who referred to department of oral medicine and diagnosis of Babol dental school or the people accompanying the patients who had claimed to have no history of depression. The periodontal indexes of the study included: Silness and Loe plaque index, Loe gingival index, pocket depth analysis, as well as bleeding on probing. The information related to each patient was recorded in the form and then two groups were compared.FINDINGS: In the present study, the pocket probing were 2.7692±0.5991 and 2.2917±0.4643 in the control and case groups, respectively (p= 0.009). The Plaque Index means were 1.5385±0.1 and 7763.2593±0.5257 in the control and case groups, respectively. Furthermore, the GI and BOP difference between the two groups were not significant. Moreover, there was no significant relationship between the mean of all the analyzed indexes and the increase of depression.CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate a vivid relationship between the depth of pocket probing and depression. Introduction & Objective: One candidate gene for colorectal cancer susceptibility is exonuclease1 (EXO1) .It is a member of RAD2 nuclease family. It plays a main role in mismatch repair. EXO1 acts also in DNA replication and recombination. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are shown to be related with cancer incidence. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between P757L polymorphism at exon 13 of the EXO1 gene and the risk of colorectal cancer in an Iranian population. Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, 81cases and 86 healthy controls were selected from among individuals who were referred toTehran Taleghani hospital during 2008-2009. The individuals were divided into two groups, case and control, based on their colonoscopy and pathology results. Genotype analysis was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method and MNII restriction enzyme. Totally 167 samples were analyzed. Results: Based on our findings when Pro/Pro genotype was reference for the Leu/Leu (TT) genotype (OR=0.168, 95%CI 0.034-0.816), it showed a reverse association with colorectal cancer. While Pro/Leu (CT) genotype did not revealed a significant association with colorectal cancer at the same status. (OR=0.663, 95%CI 0.340-1.294). Conclusion: The results of this study were compatible with other investigations which convey Leu/Leu (TT) genotype of EXO1 has reverse association with colorectal cancer. Therefore TT genotype has a protective effect against colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lingual bar is the most common major connector in the mandibular RPDs (removable partial dentures). There is a great controversy about required space for lingual bar. The aim of this study was to evaluate the lingual tissues of anterior mandible and to locate the immovable tissues for placement of lingual bar.METHODS: In a cross sectional study 60 subjects with normal lingual gingival tissue (Loe gingival index=1or 0), without any history of orthodontic treatment, and with at least 8 teeth from the right 2nd premolar to the left 2nd premolar. These subjects were divided into 3 age groups including (20-29), (30-39) and (40-49) ranges. These measurements consisted of the gingival sulcus, keratinized gingiva, the functional depth of mouth floor, and the width of immovable lingual tissues. Then the measurements were analyzed statistically by SPSS t-test, ANOVA, and post hoc tests.FINDINGS: The mean value range of immovable lingual tissue width was from 4.53 mm for central incisor to 7.62mm for 2nd premolar. The mean value of lingual immovable tissue width of anterior mandible was greater in male cases (7.22mm) than female ones (6.7mm) except for the right canine. But this difference was not significant statistically.CONCLUSION: The majority of studied subjects didn’t have capability for lingual bar use. There was no difference between sexes in terms of the mean value of lingual immovable tissue width of anterior mandible. The mean value of lingual immovable tissue width in anterior mandible increased antero-posteriorly.

Background and Objective: There are many researches regarding association between periodontal problem and smoking but there are a few studies about this relationship and the changes in salivary composition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of smoking on salivary composition in subjects with moderate periodontitis before and after periodontal therapy. Methods: In this study saliva samples were taken from 30 patients (15 smokers and 15 non-smokers) with mean age of 33 who referred to periodontal clinic of Babol dental faculty. Laboratory parameters were SIgA, SIgG, Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Albumin and Amylase. Salivary sampling was done in 2 stages before and after scaling. Data were analyzed using paired T-test and T-test. Background and Objective: There are several factors such as cigarette smoking, which has a role in etiology of periodontitis. Smoking has an effect on initiation, duration and severity of this disease. Therefore, it can be effective on results of periodontal therapy. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the smoking on changes of periodontal indices before and after periodontal therapy. Methods: This semi-experimental study was done on 30 patients with moderate periodontitis who referred to periodontal department of Babol faculty of dentistry. The mean age of patients was 33 years. The patients had no systemic disease with ≥4mm, probing pocket depth. GI (Gingival index), PI (Plaque index), BI (Bleeding index) and PPD (Probing pocket depth) were measured two times, first time before treatment and second time 20 days after complete scaling and root planning. Findings: There is not significant difference between 2 groups in GI, BI, PI and PPD before treatment but after that is a greater reduction of PPD (2.5±0.1) in non-smokers (2.7±0.1) (P=0.039). Also, non-smokers showed lower GI, BI and PI level but this change is not significant in PI. Conclusion: Scaling and root planning were effective on reduction of periodontal indices (GI, PI, BI, PPD) but this reduction in smokers is slower than non-smokers.

Background and Objective: The defensive role of saliva is mainly played via immunoglobulins. Periodontal infections are the most common diseases in oral cavity and therefore defensive function of saliva against these infections are important. With regard to the effects of systemic diseases on defensive function of saliva, the objective of this study was to survey the relationship between gingivitis and salivary immunoglobulins in patients with Thalassemia major. Methods: This study was done on 55 children (Between 5-12 years old) with Thalassemia major who referred to Thalassemia center of Amirkola children hospital. Of these, 30 cases with gingivitis and 25 without gingivitis were chosen as case and control groups, respectively. Questionnaires were prepared and then evaluation of gingiva condition was done. Saliva samples were taken and examined by ELISA. Findings: There was no significant difference between the rate of IgA, IgG and IgM in two groups. Also, there was not relationship between severity of gingivitis and the rate of salivary immunoglobulins. Conclusion: T-cells affect on the activity of B cells. With regard to reduction of activity of T-cells lymphocyte (CD4) in Thalassemia and the effect of these cells on promotion of B-lymphocyte function, B-cells not response to gingivitis by synthesis of immunoglobulins.

Statement of Problems: Amoxicillin-Metronidazole in conjunction with mechanical therapy such as scaling and root planning (SRP) is an effective adjunctive method for treatment of chronic periodontitis. The use of Co- Amoxiclave as a single medical therapy has been of interest because of its similar therapeutic effects as compared with the compounds mentioned above. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Amoxicillin-Metronidazole and Farmentin (a new compound of Co- Amoxiclave) in treatment of Moderate Chronic Periodontitis. Methods and Material: In this experimental single blind study, 60 patients (30 females and 30 males) with choronic moderate perdontitis and with an average age of 30-50 years old were evaluated. Scalling and root planning (SRP) and oral health instruction (OHI) were done for all the patients. They were divided into three groups. Group one received Farmentin and group two received Amoxicillin-Metronidazole for one week. Group three didn't receive any antibiotic.Periodontical Disease Index (PDI), Gingival Index (GI), Modified Papillary Bleeding Index (MPBI), Plaque index (PLI), and probing packet Depth (PPD) were measured in their first visits, one week after scaling and before taking medicine, 1,3,6 weeks after taking medicine and 2 ,3 months later. Finally, all the data were statistically analyzed by Anova and Tukey test. Result: None of the parameters under the study showed a statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 2 ( P = 0.05). During the treatment GI showed a significant difference between the test and control groups (p <0.05). MPBI in the test and control groups was significantly different one week after scaling and follow ups. There were significant differences between the two test groups and control in PLI, one week after taking medicine. Also, there were significant differences between groups 1 and 3 (p=0.049, p=0.007) and groups 2 and 3 ( p =0.044, p =0.028) in the 4 latest follow up for PPD and PDI. Conclusion: Both Farmentin and Amoxicillin-Metronidazole in conjunction with mechanical therapy (SRP) have similar effects in treatment of chronic moderate periodontitis; however, they are more effective than SRP alone.
