Introduction: The most common endocrine disorder associated with altered cellular metabolism is Diabetes mellitus (DM). Lamium album, also called white dead nettle, is shown to have antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and free radical scavenging properties as well as improving fat metabolism. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of lamium album on serum level of glucose and lipid profile in sterptozotocin induced diabetic rats with known anti diabetic effects of utricadioica. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, thirty two male wistar rats were randomly assigned into four groups; normal control, diabetic control, diabetic receiving Urtica (100 mg/kg daily, diabetic receiving dlamium (100 mg/kg/daily) for 28 days. Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and LDL/HDL ratio were measured. Data were analyzed by SPSS-16 and one way ANOVA followed by Tukey multiple comparison test. p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Hydroalchoholic extracts of Urticadioica and Lamium album caused significant decrease (p < 0.05) in serum level of glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Compared to diabetic control group, both plant extracts significantly decreased serum cholesterol, LDL and LDL/HDL ratio and on the opposite direction remarkably increased serum HDL (p < 0.05). However, serum TG in the diabetic rats treated with Urticadioica was lower than diabetic rats exposed to Lamium album extract (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Administration of Urticadioica and Lamium album extracts to diabetic rats by their antihyperglycemic and antilipidemic properties might be effective in the prevention or management of diabetes. Introduction: Diabetes is known as a common risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Another issue is people's belief about therapeutic effects of opium on the metabolic ill conditions. This conception has led to the rising prevalence of opium consumption, which demands further studies in different regions. Objective: The aim of this study was determination of the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors between diabetic patients in Kerman and study of opium's impression on these factors as a common social habit in this region. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study we enrolled 248 diabetic patients (203(81%) female and 45 (19%) male, age 54.37 ± 9.75 years old) in Kerman. A questionnaire completed after direct interview, physical examination and laboratory assessment. The data were analyzed by SPSS soft word. Results: Mean duration of disease was 8.78 ± 7.48 years. Overall, 38.7% of the patients had arterial hypertension and 75.6% were in uncontrolled DM state, as glycosilated hemoglobin more than 7%. As revealed, 47.6% of the patients had cholesterol greater than 200, 69.3% triglyceride higher than 150, 57.8% with LDL-C greater than 100 and 43.7% were with low level of HDL-C. The prevalence of opium consumption in patients was 20.4%. The hypercholesterolemia was significantly less frequent in opium users; in contrast, high systolic blood pressure was more frequent among them. No significant difference was observed in the other type of serum lipids or statement of diabetes control) Conclusion: Cardiovascular risk factors were frequent among patients in Kerman. Thus, preventive policies should be adopted to control it. On the other hand, opium consumption did not show any considerable effect on cardiovascular risk factors. Background: Considering the high prevalence of diabetes and developing cardiovascular diseases through dyslipidemia and inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of oligofructose-enriched inulin on serum lipid concentrations and inflammation in women with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial, 52 women with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Experimental group (n=27) received 10g/day oligofructose-enriched inulin and control group (n=25) received 10g/day maltodextrin (placebo) for 8 weeks. Dietary intakes, anthropometric indicies, hs-CRP and serum lipids levels were measured at the baseline and at the end of the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (verision11.5). Paired, independent t-test and ANCOVA were used to compare comparison of quantitative variables. Results: At the end of study, significant decrease was observed in total cholesterol levels mean (28.00 mg/dL, 14.10%), LDL-c (22.00 mg/dL, 21.70%), TC/HDL-c ratio (0.73, 20.70%) and LDL-c/HDL-c ratio (0.55, 27.50%) in oligofructose-enriched inulin compared with the maltodextrin group (p=0.03). Changes in concentrations of triglycerides, hsCRP and high-density lipoprotein were not significant in oligofructose-enriched inulin compared to maltodextrin group. Conclusions: Oligofructose-enriched inulin supplementation with improving in inflammtion and lipid profile help in management of type 2 diabetes and its complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
