The improvement of water consumption efficiency is very significant, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this research, the effects of three hydrogel rates (0, 10, and 50 Mg ha-1) and three irrigation regimes (50%, 70%, and 100% of water requirement) on growth, yield, and oil production of Thymus daenensis were studied in a lysimetric experiment. The process of hydrogel synthesis was performed with sodium alginate as the main bone of the polymer and acrylic acid and acrylamide as monomers with the rapeseed meal biochar was made at 300 ºC. The results showed that the essential oil content produced by the plant was impressed by the hydrogel application. The essential oil content increased with an increase in water deficit, but the essential oil yield decreased in the lysimeters with water deficit compared to the ones without water stress. Besides, the application of 50 Mg ha-1 hydrogel caused a 17% increase in the dry matter and a 12% increase in the plant's height. According to the results of this experiment, the application of hydrogel caused the improvement in most characteristics of the Thymus daenensis in water stress conditions.

The soils of desert areas are mostly low in organic matter and may fluctuate greatly in terms of acidity. Biochars are one of the materials used to improve and modify some soil characteristics. This compound is very resistant to decomposition and remains in the soil for a longer period, reducing agricultural waste and turning it into a soil conditioner. This leads to keeping carbon in the soil, increasing food security, increasing biodiversity, and reducing deforestation. In this research, an attempt was made to investigate the biochar of fodder beet plant waste produced at different pyrolysis temperatures and its physical and chemical characteristics. For this purpose, fodder beet wastes were collected from settlements around Birjand and after being crushed and air-dried, they were pyrolyzed in an electric furnace under limited oxygen conditions at a temperature range of 300-700 degrees Celsius. Then, the characteristics of the produced biochars were performed with 3 repetitions of measurements and statistical analyses with SPSS software. The results of this research showed that the characteristics of biochars changed significantly with temperature change. The highest yield percentage (59%), organic carbon (56.33%), total nitrogen (0.53%), water retention (0.84g/g) at 300 and 400 degrees Celsius, and the highest amount of ash (% 76), acidity (8.21) and electrical conductivity (0.1ds/cm) was obtained at a temperature of 700 degrees Celsius. The percentage of carbon and the efficiency of biochar produced at temperatures of 300 and 400 degrees Celsius were higher than other biochar produced at other temperatures. Biochar produced at 300°C has better characteristics in terms of carbon percentage and acidity efficiency compared to biochar produced at 400°C. Although these differences were not statistically significant, due to biochar production being more economical in terms of energy consumption, it is recommended to produce biochar at a temperature of 300 degrees Celsius.

In addition to the distribution of elements in the soil solid phase, element species in the solution are also very important due to their importance of providing elements for root uptake. For a deeper study of the chemical cycle of elements in saline soils treated with biochar, the study of speciation is very useful and provides a method to reduce or transform the toxicity caused by toxic elements in saline soils. Therefore, to investigate the effect of biochar on Cd speciation in two saline calcareous soils, 15 mg kg-1 Cd as cadmium chloride was added to the soil sample (200 g), and the soils were incubated for three weeks at 25±2 °C at 80% field capacity. After the incubation period, salinity levels of 20 and 40 mmol kg-1 as sodium chloride (equal to 3.65 and 7.30 dS m-1) were added to the soils. Then, the 1% (w/w) of the sugarcane bagasse and biochars produced at 400 and 600 °C were added to the soils, and then incubated for three months at 25±2 °C at 80% field capacity. At the end of the incubation period, for the speciation of Cd in the soil solution (in a 1 to 2 ratio), the concentration of dissolved cations and anions in the soil samples was measured. IntroductionLong-term use of chemical fertilizers can cause many adverse effects. In addition, excessive consumption of chemical fertilizers can lead to decreased food safety and low quality of vegetables, such as the accumulation of nitrates in plants. Today, using organic fertilizers is an efficient way to achieve sustainable agricultural development. The release rate of nutrients from organic fertilizers is slow and hardly exceeds the absorption capacity of plants compared to chemical fertilizers.Materials and MethodsTo compare the effect of chemical and organic fertilizers on the quantitative and qualitative traits of tomatoes in field conditions, an experiment was conducted in the cropping year of 2020-2021 in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications in the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. Experimental treatments included: 1- biochar (8 t.ha-1), 2- animal manure (30 t.ha-1), 3- vermicompost (25 t.ha-1), 4- NPK chemical fertilizer (225 kg.ha-1 urea, 150 kg.ha-1 phosphorus fertilizer and 150 kg.ha-1 potassium sulfate), 5- 50% biochar + 50% animal manure, 6- 50% biochar + vermicompost, 7-50% animal manure + 50% vermicompost, 8- 50% biochar + 50% NPK, 9- 50% animal manure + 50% NPK, 10- 50% animal manure + 50% NPK, 11- 25% biochar + 25% animal manure + 25% vermicompost + 25% NPK and 12- control. The harvesting operation was carried out in two cutting. Five plants were randomly selected in each plot, and traits such as fruit size, length, and diameter were measured. Also, total yield, Brix index, vitamin C, and lycopene were measured in both cuttings.Results and DiscussionIn the first and second cutting, the highest fruit volume was obtained in the treatment of NPK chemical fertilizer (80.5 cm-3) and the combined use of NPK chemical + animal manure (131 cm-3), respectively. In the first cutting, the maximum fruit length was reported in the treatment of NPK chemical fertilizer (5.61 cm), and the second cutting, in the combined application of NPK chemical fertilizer + animal manure (7.16 cm) that compared to the control (4.73 cm) had a longer fruit length of 51%. The largest fruit diameter was observed in the NPK chemical fertilizer treatment (5.01 cm), which was 16% more than the control (4.31 cm). On the other hand, in the second cutting, the largest fruit diameter was shown in the combined application of chemical NPK + manure (5.54 cm). In the first cutting and the total of both cuttings, the highest yield was observed in the treatment of NPK chemical fertilizer (39.6 and 70.5 t.ha-1, respectively), while in the second cutting, the highest yield was obtained in the combined treatment of NPK chemical fertilizer + animal manure. (32.8 ton.ha-1). The results showed that using organic fertilizers individually and combinatorial compared to NPK chemical fertilizers had more Brix index, vitamin C, and lycopene. The highest amount of Brix index in first and second cutting (6.55 and 7.13, respectively), vitamin C (12.9 and 11.4 mg.100 g sample-1, respectively), and lycopene (2.48 and 2.25 mg.100 g sample-1, respectively) in the combined treatment of animal manure + vermicompost. Since the elements in the chemical fertilizer are released faster than the elements of other fertilizers and are available to the plant, therefore, by increasing the initial growth of the plant and as a result of improving its flowering potential, the total yield increased, in particular in the first cutting, where the superior treatment was the NPK chemical fertilizer. Further, due to the gradual release of organic fertilizer elements, the combined treatment of chemical and organic fertilizers increased the yield. On the other hand, organic matter plays an important role in soil fertility and performance. The rare elements in organic matter can meet the needs of soil microorganisms, enhance microbial activities, affect soil-microorganism interactions, and indirectly affect crop quality.ConclusionThe use of organic fertilizer, when combined with chemical fertilizer, can enhance both the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of tomatoes. By substituting a portion of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer, not only can yield be improved, but it's also possible to reduce the consumption of costly chemical fertilizers. This approach aligns with sustainable agricultural goals by optimizing the use of organic fertilizers.

IntroductionAnaerobic bacteria break down organic materials like animal manure, household trash, plant wastes, and sewage sludge during the anaerobic digestion process of biological materials and produce biogas. One of the main issues in using biogas is hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which can corrode pipelines and engines in concentrations between 50 and 10,000 ppm. One method for removing H2S from biogas with minimal investment and operation costs is biofiltration. Whether organic or inorganic, the biofilter's bed filling materials must adhere to certain standards including high contact surface area, high permeability, and high absorption. In this study, biochar and compost were used as bed particles in the biofilter to study the removal of H2S from the biogas flow in the lab. Afterward, kinetic modeling was used to describe the removal process numerically.Material and MethodsTo remove H2S from the biogas, a lab-sized biofilter was constructed. Biochar and compost were employed separately as the material for the biofilter bed. Because of its high absorption capacity and porosity, biochar is a good choice for substrate and packed beds in biofilters. The biochar pieces used were broken into 10 mm long cylindrical pieces with a diameter of 5 mm. Compost was used as substrate particles because it contains nutrients for microorganisms. Compost granules with an average length of 7.5 mm and 3 mm in diameter were used in this study. For the biofilter reactor, each of these substrates was put inside a cylinder with a diameter of 6 cm and a height of 60 cm. The biofilter's bottom is where the biogas enters, and its top is where it exits. During the experiment, biogas flowed at a rate of 72 liters per hour. Mathematical modeling was used to conduct kinetic studies of the process to better comprehend and generalize the results. This method involves feeding the biofilter column with biogas that contains H2S while the biofilm is present on the surface of the biofilter bed particles. The bacteria in the biofilm change the gaseous H2S into the harmless substance sulfur and store it in their cells. The assumptions that form the foundation of the mathematical models are: the H2S concentration is uniform throughout the gas flow, the gas flow is constant, and the column's temperature is constant at a specific height.Results and DiscussionIn the beginning, biochar was used as a substrate in the biofilter to test its effectiveness, and the results obtained for removing H2S from the biogas were acceptable. H2S concentration in biogas was significantly reduced using biochar beds. It dropped from 300 ppm and 200 ppm to 50 ppm where the greatest H2S concentration reduction was achieved. The level of Methane in the biogas was not significantly impacted by the biofilter. This is regarded as a significant outcome when taking into account the goal which is producing biogas with a high concentration of methane. The H2S elimination effectiveness was 94% with the biochar bed and biogas input with 185 ppm H2S concentration. The removal efficiency reached 76% with the compost bed and input concentration of 70 ppm. Using mathematical models, the simulation was carried out by modifying the model's parameters until the predicted results closely matched the experimental data. It may be concluded that the suggested mathematical model is sufficient for the quantitative description of H2S removal from biogas utilizing biofilm in light of how closely the calculation results matched the experimental data. The only model parameter that was changed to make the model results almost identical to the experimental data was the value of the maximum specific growth rate (μmax) which has the greatest influence on the model results. The value of μmax for the biochar bed was calculated as 0.0000650 s-1 and for the compost bed at 70 ppm and 35 ppm concentrations as 0.0000071 s-1 and 0.0000035 s-1, respectively.ConclusionThe primary objective of this study is to examine the removal of H2S from biogas using readily available and natural substrates. According to the findings, at a height of 60 cm, H2S concentration in biochar and compost beds decreased from 185 ppm to 11 ppm (removal efficiency: 94%) and from 70 ppm to 17 ppm (removal efficiency: 76%), respectively. Introduction: Probiotics accelerate and improve rumen development, stability, and balance of beneficial microbes in the digestive system and decrease microflora disruption, which will increase the activity of desirable enzymes. This action of probiotics increases digestibility, feed efficiency, livestock performance, and general defense including antioxidant power. However, the response of different animals to the specific probiotics is not uniform and similar. Therefore, it is necessary to provide factors that improve the conditions for the establishment and functioning of microbial additives in the rumen or to use compounds that have a synergistic effect with probiotics to receive a uniform and reassuring response from the herd. One of the potentially useful materials to achieve this goal is biochar. In the present study, it was hypothesized that if biochar (as a favorable habitat for microorganisms) is added to probiotic-containing diets, the conditions for establishing these microbial products in the fermentation environment may be improved and probiotics can act more efficiently. Moreover, a probable synergy between probiotics and biochar may increase the efficiency of these additives compared to their separate usage. However, there is no special information available in this regard, especially about the effect of including biochar in probiotic-containing diets on different microbial populations and rumen hydrolytic enzymes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential of biochar in enhancing the effectiveness of the probiotic sources (Bacilli and/or Lactobacilli) on microbial populations, hydrolytic enzyme activity, digestibility, antioxidant capacity, and fermentation products in the sheep rumen, in vitro. Materials and methods: The experimental treatments were: 1. A basal diet without probiotics and biochar (control), 2. Basal diet containing probiotic Bacilli (B. coagulans, B. subtilis, and B. licheniformis, at the ratio of 2×1011, 5×109, and 5×109 CFU/g, respectively), 3. A basal diet containing probiotic Lactobacilli (L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, and Enterococcus faecium, at the ratio of 2×109, 2×1010, and 2×1010 CFU/g, respectively), 4. A basal diet containing biochar, 5. A basal diet containing Bacilli-biochar, 6. A basal diet containing Lactobacillibiochar, and 7. A basal diet containing Bacilli-Lactobacilli-biochar. Diet digestibility was determined by the twostage Tilley and Terry method. In addition, the 24 and 72-h in vitro gas production techniques were conducted. At the end of each incubation, cellulolytic and proteolytic bacteria, as well as protozoa population, enzymatic activity (carboxymethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, filter paper degrading, and α-amylase), truly digestible substrate (TDS), partitioning factor (PF), microbial biomass production (MBP), methane release, antioxidant capacity, pH, ammonia-N (NH3-N), and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were determined by the standard methods. All in vitro tests were done in three replicates and two batches (runs) in different weeks. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design using the GLM procedure of SAS. Results and discussion: Separate inclusion of probiotic Bacilli and biochar in the diet increased the cellulolytic bacteria population and activity of fibrolytic enzymes compared to the control (P<0.05), but these variables were not affected by Lactobacilli. The highest values of these variables were observed with the inclusion of biochar in probiotic Bacilli-containing diets (i.e., Bacilli-biochar and Bacilli-Lactobacilli-biochar treatments). These results were due to probiotics' ability to provide superior growth conditions for useful ruminal microbes, as well as the positive influence of the biochar structure, as a desirable habitat, on establishing, attaching, and developing rumen microorganisms. The protozoa population was not affected by biochar, but it was decreased (P<0.05) in the probiotic-containing diets (Bacilli and Lactobacilli treatments without or with biochar) in comparison to the control. The number of proteolytic bacteria and protease activity were not affected by the experimental treatments. Alpha-amylase activity in 24-h incubation in Basilli and Lactobacilli treatments was higher than the control (P<0.05) but was not affected by biochar. The activity of this enzyme in 72-incubation was lower in the control than in probiotic or biochar treatments (P<0.05). The alpha-amylase activity was the highest in the Lactobacillibiochar and Bacilli-Lactobacilli-biochar groups. Separate inclusion of probiotics and biochar in the diet increased the diet digestibility, degraded substrate, and microbial biomass production (P<0.05). The maximum values of these parameters were detected in the probiotics-biochar diets. The reason for these increases can be related to the improvement of the cellulolytic bacteria population, alpha-amylase, and fibrolytic enzyme activity in the probiotic or biochar groups. The 24-h total antioxidant activity was not affected by the treatments. In 72-h incubation, the probiotics did not affect this variable, but a tendency to increase in antioxidant capacity was observed in diets containing biochar (without or with probiotics). The improving effect of biochar on the antioxidant power could be owing to its activity in trapping pollutants, poisons, and adverse factors in the incubation medium. Methane release, NH3-N, and acetate to propionate ratio were decreased, but total VFA was increased by separate use of the probiotics or biochar in the diet, compared to the control (P<0.05). More importantly, the inclusion of biochar in the diets containing the probiotic (i.e., Bacilli-biochar, Lactobacilli-biochar, and Bacilli-Lactobacilli-biochar) resulted in the greatest total VFA and the lowest NH3-N and methane release (P<0.05). One reason for the increased methane and ammonia was the lower protozoa population in the additives groups. The methane decline may also be related to the decreasing effect of the additives on methanogens, and their increasing effect on methanotrophs. Moreover, the improved bacterial biomass production could be considered as another reason for the decreased ammonia; i.e., more ammonia was assimilated into the bacterial protein. The increased VFA production was due to the higher digestibility and degraded substrate in the probiotic and/or biochar groups. Regarding the valuable characteristics of probiotics and biochar and their probable synergistic effects, their simultaneous application resulted in the highest improvement of fermentation variables. Conclusions: Separate use of probiotics Bacilli and Lactobacilli or biochar in the diet improved in vitro ruminal microbial and enzymatic activity and reduced energy (as methane) and nitrogen (as ammonia) losses. More importantly, the addition of biochar to the probiotics-containing diets was a suitable strategy for enhancing the effectiveness of the probiotic sources on digestibility and microbial biomass and reduction of methane and ammonia. Introduction Widespread entry of effluents, which are toxic and non-biodegradable, from factories and various industries into the environment, and accordingly, pollution of water and soil resources lead to many dangers for humans and other organisms. Therefore, modification of these resources is important. Currently, multiple technologies from the physical, chemical, and biological perspectives have been established for the remediation of contaminated water. However, most of them involve energy consumption, high-cost instruments, low efficiency, complicated implementation, or secondary pollution. Therefore, it is critical to develop more convenient, economic, and environmentally harmonious strategies for the decontamination of polluted water. Biochar is an emerging material that is manufactured by the decomposition of carbon-rich biomass under oxygen-limited pyrolysis. Remarkable progress has been made in the understanding of biochar as an environmentally friendly and low-cost material for carbon sequestration, energy recovery, contamination relief, and nutrient supplementation. In recent decades, biochar has gained significant attention in the remediation of contamination in terrestrial and aquatic environments. However, biochar only has limited adsorption ability to anionic contaminants in water. This is because biochar often has a negative surface charge, hindering it to absorb negatively charged compounds such as Cr(VI) and Direct Blue71. Various modification methods thus have been developed to improve its affiliation to anionic contaminants by introducing metal oxides onto the carbon surface within its pore networks. Studies showed that the application of biochar and metal-coated biochar, effectively leads to the removal of significant amounts of contaminants from water and soil, but so far the impact of metal-carbon composite on the removal of contaminants, especially anionic contaminants has not been reviewed. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to produce different types of biochar-metal composites, to investigate the effectiveness of different types of composites in removing Direct Blue 71 and chromium from aqueous solution, and also to compare the composites with: plant biomass, metal-coated biomass, biochar, and metal coated biochar. Materials and Methods In this study, the effect of plant biomass, metal-coated biomass, biochar, metal-coated biochar, and metal-biochar composite at two temperatures (300 and 600 ̊C) on the removal of Direct Blue 71 and Chromium contaminants from the water was investigated. The biochar used in this experiment was produced from the thermal decomposition of rice straw, which is abundant in the region. At first, the sample was passed through a 2 mm sieve, then they pyrolyzed at 300 and 600 ̊C for three hours. Metal-coated biochars and metal-biochar composites were prepared from the combination of metals (manganese, zinc, copper, iron, and aluminum) with a concentration of 10,000 mg L-1 with agricultural residues (rice straw) as a raw material or biochar. The samples were mixed with metals with a ratio of 1:50 (1 gram of sample, 50 mL of metal solution) and shaken for 24 hours. Then the samples were filtered and oven dried at 70 ̊C. After the preparation of adsorbents, a specific amount of adsorbents and pollutants with a concentration of 20 mg L -1 were combined and shaken for three hours until they reached equilibrium. All the samples were centrifuged for 5 minutes at 6000 rpm. After filtration, the final concentration of pollutants was determined and the removal percentage of Direct Blue 71 and chromium was calculated. Results and Discussion Based on our results, the application of different adsorbents has a significant effect on the removal percentage of Direct Blue 71 and chromium from the water. Our data showed that high-temperature adsorbents were more efficient in removing Direct Blue 71 and chromium. For example, by increasing the biochar pyrolysis temperature from 300 to 600 °C, the Direct Blue 71 removal percentage has increased from 10.733 to 63.695 %. According to the results of the current study, it can be observed that covering the agricultural residues and biochars with metals has been able to increase the efficiency of the adsorbents in pollutant removal due to the creation of a cationic bridge. In general, the results of this study showed that the application of aluminum and iron composite and aluminum and iron coated biochar produced at 600°C was beneficial in the remediation of contaminated water and these adsorbents could remove 98.303, 88.847, 98.302 and 96.777 % of Direct Blue 71 and 97.983, 78.733, 96.75 and 92.167 % of chromium pollutant from the aqueous solution, respectively. Therefore, the application of these adsorbents can be useful to modify water polluted with these contaminants. Conclusion According to the results of this research, it can be observed that the addition of metal-coated biochar and biocharmetal composite to water has reduced the amount of direct blue 71 and chromium pollutants, so their use in water contaminated with these pollutants can be beneficial. Organic materials and biochar are among the adsorbents that are widely used to reduce pollutants from water and soil, but anionic pollutants are not well absorbed due to the dominant negative surface charge of these adsorbents. Therefore, it seems that for more effective use of organic adsorbents, it is necessary to combine these materials with metals or other materials so that their absorption capacity increases and they can be effective in removing anionic pollutants. In addition to the distribution of elements in the soil solid phase, element species in the solution are also very important due to their importance of providing elements for root uptake. For a deeper study of the chemical cycle of elements in saline soils treated with biochar, the study of speciation is very useful and provides a method to reduce or transform the toxicity caused by toxic elements in saline soils. Therefore, to investigate the effect of biochar on Cd speciation in two saline calcareous soils, 15 mg kg-1 Cd as cadmium chloride was added to the soil sample (200 g), and the soils were incubated for three weeks at 25±2°C at 80% field capacity. After the incubation period, salinity levels of 20 and 40 mmol kg-1 as sodium chloride (equal to 3.65 and 7.30 dS m-1) were added to the soils. Then, the 1% (w/w) of the sugarcane bagasse and biochars produced at 400 and 600°C were added to the soils, and then incubated for three months at 25±2°C at 80% field capacity. At the end of the incubation period, for the speciation of Cd in the soil solution (in a 1 to 2 ratio), the concentration of dissolved cations and anions in the soil samples was measured. The results showed that the interaction between salinity, biochar, and soil on Cd2+, CdCl+, CdCl20, and Cd(SO4)2 2- was significant. The application of biochar in sandy soil reduced (p <0.05) the concentration of CdCl+, CdCl20, CdSO40, and CdOH+ species compared to the control soil, while it did not affect clay soil. Also, salinity caused by sodium chloride in sandy soil increased the concentration of CdCl+ and CdCl20 species and decreased CdSO40 and CdOH+ species compared to the control soil (p <0.05). Background and Objective: Nowadays, the use of biochar as a new and suitable adsorbent to remove inorganic pollutants from water sources has grown significantly. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar physical modifications compared to unmodified biochar on nickel (Ni) removal efficiency in aqueous solutions. Materials and Methods: After the production of cypress cones biochar (RB), biochar particles (<164 µm) were crushed into very small (<26 µm) dimensions (BMB) using a planetary ball mill and after evaluation their various properties by SLS, BET, FTIR and SEM techniques, their application (RB and BMB) in optimizing the Ni removal from aqueous solutions were evaluated using the response surface methodology (RSM: BoxBehnken design). Results: Based on the results, the physical modification of biochar (BMB) decreased the particle size by 6.2 times, increased the specific surface area by 4.9 times, increased (containing oxygen) and decreased (aliphatic and OH stretching groups) of specific functional groups and finer surface morphology, compared to RB. The use of BMB in the aqueous solution caused an increase of 9.7% (on average) in the removal of Ni compared to the RB sample. The fitting of the data obtained from Ni removal in the Box-Benken model in both adsorbents shows the appropriate prediction of this model in the optimization of Ni removal from aqueous solutions. Conclusion: According to the results of this research, the physical modification of biochar, as a simple, cheap, and environmentally friendly method, due to the increase in the efficiency of Ni pollutant removal, can be introduced as a suitable method in the activation of biochar, which further research is required based on the type of biochar and various pollutants. Introduction Drought is the most important limiting factor for the yield and quality of products in the world. Fertilizer application can mitigate drought stress in plants. Most farmers prefer to use inorganic (chemical) fertilizers because of their fast impact on plant growth. The reasonable cost of inorganic fertilizers and their availability are the other reasons. However, the long-term effects of organic fertilizers on plant growth and soil fertility has been proved. The grapevines are one of the most important garden products in the world as well as in Iran. It has been reported that the application of biochar has significant effects on soil fertility as well as plant growth. Biochars have properties such as highly porous structure, high specific surface area, higher water holding capacity of the soil, the long-term stability in the soil. In addition, our previous study indicated that it could decrease the hazard of sodium in soil compared with compost. In Iran, the cultivation area of grapevines was the second grade after the pistachio cultivation area in 2019. According to statistical data on agriculture in 2019, the cultivation area of irrigated and rain-fed grapevines in Kermanshah province was 7710 and 1515 ha, respectively. According to this report, the production of irrigated and rain-fed grapevines in Kermanshah province in 2019 was 82718 and 1763 tons, respectively. The effect of application of some inorganic and organic fertilizers under drought stress on yield, water use efficiency, and some biochemical characteristics of the grapevine leaves cultivar Bidane-Ghermez has been previously studied. In this research, the effect of drought stress and the application of potassium sulfate, compost, and biochar on antioxidant activities of the grapevine leaves cultivar Bidane-Ghermez was investigated. Materials and Methods A greenhouse study with a factorial experiment based on a block of randomized completely design was conducted with fertilizer treatments including control, potassium sulfate (1250 mg kg-1), compost (5% w/w), and biochar (10% w/w) without and with drought stress conditions (80 and 40% FC, respectively) during 2017-2018. For this research, the biochar was produced from apple tree pruning under low oxygen conditions by slow pyrolysis at 400 ◦C. Introduction Wind erosion is one of the important processes of soil degradation in arid and semi-arid regions. Increased soil surface resistance is a key factor to prevent wind erosion. Mulch can increase the resistance of soil surface against erosive agents by creating a coating on the soil surface. The effectiveness of mulch on wind erosion control is on the quantity, type, and durability of the used in dust sources of Iran for stabilizing soil surface against wind erosion. In recent decades, petroleum mulch has been broadly used for stabilizing soil surface against wind erosion in dust sources of Iran. Bio-polymers (e.g. cellulose hydrogel and biochar) and naturally accessible materials (e.g. nanoclay) as environment-friendly mulches can be an alternative to chemical polymers and petroleum mulches. In arid and semi-arid regions, wetting-drying cycles play a crucial role in soil aggregate formation and strength. However, there have been limited studies assessing the impact of wetting-drying cycles on the durability of applied mulches. The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of different types of mulches, including inorganic montmorillonite nanoclay, chemical polyvinyl acetate polymer, and biological biochar and cellulose hydrogel, at various time intervals. The study aimed to improve the physical and mechanical properties of soil, as well as control wind erosion in a loamy sand soil using a wind tunnel. Additionally, the durability of these mulches was evaluated over time after subjecting them to four wetting-drying cycles.Materials and Methods A factorial experiment was conducted based on completely randomized design with three replications. The factors including mulch type (four levels: nanoclay montmorillonite, polyvinyl acetate polymer, biochar and cellulose hydrogel), mulch concentration (Nanoclay montmorillonite: 0, 16 and 32, Polyvinyl Acetate polymer: 0, 8, and 16, biochar and cellulose hydrogel: 0, 65 and 200 g/m2) and duration (21, 42, 63 and 126 days). The soil used in the wind tunnel experiments was collected from a dust source in the southeast of Ahvaz (Site Number 4). Trays measuring 50×30×5 cm were filled with this soil. The soil surface was then uniformly sprayed with an emulsion of Nanoclay and Polyvinyl Acetate. Additionally, biochar and cellulose hydrogel were mixed uniformly with the soil. Water was sprayed on the soil surface to maintain a constant moisture content of 75% of field capacity. After a specified period, soil properties such as mean weight diameter of aggregates, fractal dimension, penetration resistance, and shear strength were measured. The trays were then placed in a wind tunnel, and a wind erosion test was conducted at a wind speed of 20 m/s for a duration of 5 minutes. The amount of soil loss was measured using the weight method. Studies showed that the use of biochar and metal-coated biochar effectively leads to the removal of a significant amount of contaminants from water and soil, but so far, the effect of carbon-metal composite on the removal of contaminants, especially anionic contaminants, has not been comprehensively investigated. In this research, the effect of biochar, metal-coated biochar and biochar-metal composite on the removal of chromium from water was investigated. Metal-coated biochars and various biochar-metal composites were prepared from the combination of metals (copper, iron and aluminum) with agricultural residues (rice straw) in raw form or as a biochar. The samples included Biochar, Copper-coated biochar, Aluminum-coated biochar, Iron-coated biochar, Copper composite, Aluminum composite, and Iron composite. In the first stage, the optimal conditions for contaminant removal were investigated, then an optimal amount of adsorbents and contaminant with a concentration of 20 mg/L and pH=6 were combined and shaken for three hours. until they reached equilibrium. The results of the present research showed that the application of iron composite and iron-coated biochar could remove 90.32 and 93.71 percent of chromium pollutant from the aqueous solution, respectively. Introduction: Nitrogen is the nutrient in plants production which usually can be added as a fertilizer into the soil. Nitrate is one of the pollutants which is mainly caused by agricultural activities which contaminants groundwater and surface water and threatens human health. Investigating an effective factor on water and minerals movement in soil and applying the new modifiers such as inorganic nanoparticles and biochar might be useful in reducing nitrate leaching and avoiding underground waters pollutions. Due to this difficulty, some situations to preserve nitrogen in the upper layers of soil such as increasing the absorbent surfaces for minerals, zeolite modifier, and biochar are considered by researchers. As many research have been conducted on using biochar in agricultural systems in terms of organic carbon sequestration in soil and reducing the greenhouse gases, its influence on other processes such as nitrate leaching has been considered as well. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mineral nano-particles and biochar on nitrate leaching in soil and aggregate stability.Materials and Methods: This study had been conducted in the laboratory in faculty of natural resources and geology science, Shahrekord University. Treatments in this study included zeolite, cloisite, and biochar at three levels. PVC pipes with 3 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height were used for the soil columns. Urea fertilizer included 46% pure nitrogen was applied to the soil columns. The amount of the Urea fertilizer was employed as an applied fertilizer for corn plants (200 g Nitrogen per hectare). Urea fertilizer was added as a solution to the soil in irrigation 1, and 5 from irrigation events. At the end of each irrigation event, nitrate effluent was measured using Spectrophotometry method.Results and Discussion: The results showed a significant reduction of nitrate leaching in treatments, 1g biochar, 1g zeolite, and 1g cloisite compared to the control treatment. There was no significant difference between reduction of nitrate leaching in the three treatments, 1g biochar, 1g Zeolite, and 1g cloisite. Furthermore, nitrate leaching in treatments, 5g biochar, 5g zeolite, and 5g cloisite compared to the control treatment was decreased significantly. In all irrigations, 5g biochar had the smallest amount of nitrate leaching comparing 5g zeolite, and 5g Clozite. In general, the results showed that nitrate leaching would be decreased significantly by adding biochar and mineral nano-particles (5%) into the soil. According to the present results and previous findings, it can be mentioned that adding biochar into the soil will cause improving the soil physical properties and reducing nitrate leaching. Thus, we show here, that biochar and nano-particles soil application decreased nitrate leaching and enhanced soil aggregate stability.

Chromium is one of these contaminants that causes contamination in the environment and brings many risks to human health and other living organisms. Various methods have been evaluated to remove heavy metals from water, which often include chemical or energy-intensive processes. Therefore, it is important to modify these sources with the help of affordable adsorbents and with low energy consumption. Previous studies showed that biochar, metal-coated biochars and carbon-metal composites are highly effective in removing chromium contaminants with a concentration of 20 mg/liter from water, but so far the effect of these adsorbents on removing this anionic contaminant in high concentrations has not been investigated.Materials and Methods: In this research, the efficiency of different adsorbents (biochar, copper-coated biochar, aluminum-coated biochar, iron-coated biochar, biochar-copper composite, biochar-aluminum composite and biochar-iron composite) on the removal of chromium, with a concentration of 300 mg per liter, from water was investigated. Metal-coated biochars were prepared from the combination of metals (copper, iron and aluminum) with a concentration of 10000 mg/kg with biochar produced at 600 degrees Celsius and various biochar-metal composites were prepared from the combination of these metals with rice straw and then the samples were pyrolyzed at 600 degrees Celsius. In order to determine the efficiency of the adsorbents, 0.5 grams of each adsorbent was mixed with 40 ml of chromium solution with a concentration of 300 mg/l and pH= 6 and shaken for three hours until they reached equilibrium. Then the samples were centrifuged for 5 minutes at 6000 rpm and after the filtration, the final concentration of the contaminant was obtained and the percentage of chromium removal was calculated.Results: The results of the present study showed that all of the applied adsorbents were effective in removing high concentrations of chromium from water. The lowest removal rate of this contaminant was related to the biochar sample, which only removed 15.28% of this contaminant from water; And the highest amount of removal was achieved using iron composite, which removed 44.45% of the contaminant from the aqueous solution. According to the results of this research, it can be observed that coating biochar and rice straw with metals has been able to increase the efficiency of this adsorbent in removing chromium from water. For example, iron composite and iron-coated biochar were able to remove 44.45 and 30.86% of chromium contaminant from the aqueous solution, respectively, while rice straw biochar was only able to remove 15.28% of this contaminant from water.Discussion: The results of present study showed that iron coated biochar and biochar-iron composite had more ability to remove chromium contaminant from aqueous solution than other metal coated biochars and biochar-metal composites and were able to perform more successfully. Therefore, the use of these adsorbents can be effective in the treatment of chromium-contaminated water.

In order to investigate the possibility of improvement of yield, yield components and the concentration of some nutrients in rice leaves (Tarom variety) by using rice straw and its biochar, a factorial experiment was conducted in the form of a randomized complete block design in nine treatments and three replications in the farm of Sari Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University, Sari, north of Iran, in 2021. The first factor was rice straw (S) at three levels of zero, 2 and 4 tons/ha and the second factor was rice straw biochar (B) at three levels of zero, 1 and 2 tons/ha. The maximum concentration of potassium (1.22%), nitrogen (4.73%) and iron (208 mg/kg) in the flag leaf was observed when rice was grown in the high levels of rice straw and particularly its biochar. Also, the concentration of silicon, manganese and zinc in the flag leaf increased with the increase in the levels of rice straw and its biochar. By increasing the use of rice straw and its biochar, the number of tillers, plant height, panicle length, weight of 1000 seeds and the number of filled seeds increased significantly. The combined use of rice straw and its biochar increased the rice grain yield, indicating a 1.78 times increase in the treatment of 2 tons/ha of rice straw biochar + 4 tons/ha of rice straw (S2B2) compared to the control. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of 2 tons/ha of biochar and 4 tons/ha of rice straw can lead to the maximum grain yield by increasing the concentration of nutrients in the flag leaf and improving the growth and yield components of rice. One of the most recent environmental concerns is the emergence of new pollutants, such as antibiotics, and increasing antimicrobial resistance in bacteria. Therefore, achieving effective methods for treating these pollutants is very important and considerable. Extensive studies have been conducted on antibiotic removal from water by carbon-based materials. Engineered biochar-based adsorbents and biochar composites can effectively increase the yield of antibiotics adsorption. Adsorbents based on biochars are made from various raw materials at different conditions. Also, physically and chemically modified biochars and their composites could be used. The structure and physicochemical properties of adsorbents and antibiotics and the environmental conditions affect the absorption of antibiotics by biochars. Research has shown that biochar has many advantages, including a wide variety of available raw materials, and they are cheap. Furthermore, it could be regenerated and reused by efficient management, which is the significant advantage of biochar-based adsorbents. Although biochar usage is a good choice for removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions, it is possible to improve its adsorption capacity with more studies to optimize the main parameters and new methods in its production and thus cause economic benefits.

A batch experiment was performed with phosphorus concentrations (0 to 35 mg/L) in two soils with different electrical conductivity (EC) (2 and 15 dSm-1 ) by a variety of biochar treatments including simple apple-grape biochar (BC), rock phosphate- biochar (BC-RP), enrichedbiochar (BC-H3PO4-RP), enriched-biochar (BC-HCl-RP), triple superphosphate (TSP), and control (Cont). The results indicated that phosphorus sorption capacity varied between the soils. Biochar treatments were effective in reducing the phosphorus adsorption of both soils. Due to BC-H3PO4-RP and BC-HCl-RP treatments, the maximum phosphorus adsorption of soils decreased in S1 soil by 14 and 23 % and in S2 soil by 26 and 19%, respectively. Also, the use of these treatments decreased the parameters of Langmuir absorption intensity (KL) of S1 soil to 0.085 and 0.066, respectively and S2 soil to 0.11 and 0.15, L/mg respectively, and Freundlich absorption capacity (KF) of S1 soil decreased to 19.2 and 22.5 and S2 soil to 28.2 and 28.1 L/kg, respectively. Enriched biochars significantly reduced the buffering indices of both soils indicating phosphorus adsorption decreased and increased the availability of phosphorus for the plant. The standard phosphorus requirement of S2 soil was lower than S1 soil by both equations. Therefore, enriched biochar can be an effective strategy to increase phosphorus availability and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in saline and non-saline conditions; however, more field studies are needed for a clear understanding of the potential of P-enriched biochar as a fertilizer alternative. Introduction Widespread entry of effluents, which are toxic and non-biodegradable, from factories and various industries into the environment, and accordingly, pollution of water and soil resources lead to many dangers for humans and other organisms. Therefore, modification of these resources is important. Currently, multiple technologies from the physical, chemical, and biological perspectives have been established for the remediation of contaminated water. However, most of them involve energy consumption, high-cost instruments, low efficiency, complicated implementation, or secondary pollution. Therefore, it is critical to develop more convenient, economic, and environmentally harmonious strategies for the decontamination of polluted water. Biochar is an emerging material that is manufactured by the decomposition of carbon-rich biomass under oxygen-limited pyrolysis. Remarkable progress has been made in the understanding of biochar as an environmentally friendly and low-cost material for carbon sequestration, energy recovery, contamination relief, and nutrient supplementation. In recent decades, biochar has gained significant attention in the remediation of contamination in terrestrial and aquatic environments. However, biochar only has limited adsorption ability to anionic contaminants in water. This is because biochar often has a negative surface charge, hindering it to absorb negatively charged compounds such as Cr(VI) and Direct Blue71. Various modification methods thus have been developed to improve its affiliation to anionic contaminants by introducing metal oxides onto the carbon surface within its pore networks. After the preparation of adsorbents, a specific amount of adsorbents and pollutants with a concentration of 20 mg L-1 were combined and shaken for three hours until they reached equilibrium. All the samples were centrifuged for 5 minutes at 6000 rpm. After filtration, the final concentration of pollutants was determined and the removal percentage of Direct Blue 71 and chromium was calculated. Results and Discussion Based on our results, the application of different adsorbents has a significant effect on the removal percentage of Direct Blue 71 and chromium from the water. Our data showed that high-temperature adsorbents were more efficient in removing Direct Blue 71 and chromium. For example, by increasing the biochar pyrolysis temperature from 300 to 600 °C, the Direct Blue 71 removal percentage has increased from 10.733 to 63.695 %. According to the results of the current study, it can be observed that covering the agricultural residues and biochars with metals has been able to increase the efficiency of the adsorbents in pollutant removal due to the creation of a cationic bridge. In general, the results of this study showed that the application of aluminum and iron composite and aluminum and iron coated biochar produced at 600°C was beneficial in the remediation of contaminated water and these adsorbents could remove 98.303, 88.847, 98.302 and 96.777 % of Direct Blue 71 and 97.983, 78.733, 96.75 and 92.167 % of chromium pollutant from the aqueous solution, respectively. Therefore, the application of these adsorbents can be useful to modify water polluted with these contaminants. Conclusion According to the results of this research, it can be observed that the addition of metal-coated biochar and biochar-metal composite to water has reduced the amount of direct blue 71 and chromium pollutants, so their use in water contaminated with these pollutants can be beneficial. Organic materials and biochar are among the adsorbents that are widely used to reduce pollutants from water and soil, but anionic pollutants are not well absorbed due to the dominant negative surface charge of these adsorbents. Therefore, it seems that for more effective use of organic adsorbents, it is necessary to combine these materials with metals or other materials so that their absorption capacity increases and they can be effective in removing anionic pollutants. The composite has a new physical and chemical nature compared to Biomass which is pyrolyzed alone (biochar). Even composite can be significantly different from metal-coated biochar.

Introduction: Humate material was used as feed additives in poultry nutrition. The biochar as a useful fertilizer in agriculture industry is a humate material that increases growth of plants. This fertilizer can as an additive be use in the poultry and animals feed, due to has many minerals material and two organic acid (humic and fulvic) in its compound. The reduce cost of diet in poultry industry for egg production, is an important goal. The biochar as a dietary additive is easily derived from burn organic material and agriculture byproduct. In recent years, several studies have been conducted to determine the effect of humic acid as an additive on performance poultry. In a study, dietary supplementation of laying hens with humic acid improves the performance and egg shape index. Investigating the effect of biochar as replacement of dietary mineral supplements on performance and egg shell quality of laying hens is rare. One of the properties of vitamin C (VC) is chelating properties, and with this property, it increases the intestinal absorption of minerals in birds. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar (as a humate material) in five levels and vitamin C in two levels as replacement of dietary mineral supplements on performance and egg shell quality of laying hens. Materials and Methods: The current experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar with vitamin C as replacement of mineral supplement in diet of laying hen. A total of 400 laying hens of Bovans strain, were randomly assigned to 10 experimental groups in a 5×2 factorial treatment arrangement with five replications and eight laying hens in each replicate during three 30-day periods. Factors tested included biochar levels (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% replacement with mineral supplements of diet) and vitamin C levels (0 and 100 mg/kg of diet). The feed intake, feed conversion ratio and daily weight gain were determined. Records of the feed intake were taken on by daily basis. Feed conversion ratio was calculated as grams of feed consumed to grams of egg mass. To determine egg shell quality characteristics, the shape index was calculated by using egg height and egg width. The egg specific gravity was evaluated by floating eggs in soluble of water and salt with different density. The egg breaking strength was measured by resistance meter.Results and Discussion: Replacing biochar levels from 25 to 100% mineral supplement of diet, with and without vitamin C, had no effect on performance characteristics (feed intake, feed conversion ratio and daily weight gain) and egg shell quality traits (egg shape index, egg specific gravity and egg breaking strength) in total of period of the experiment (50 to 61 weeks of age). The levels of 25 and 50% biochar, plus vitamin C in diet decreased feed intake in the first period. Whereas, the level of 75% biochar, plus vitamin C in diet increased feed intake in this period. The egg shape index with the addition of vitamin C in diet decreased in the third period. The reason of no significant effect of biochar on performance and egg shell quality can be due to the different sources and amounts of biochar in poultry diet. The reason of no significant effect of vitamin C on performance and egg shell quality in laying hens can be due to the bird environmental temperature. The use of vitamin C in diet of laying hens under heat stress improves their performance. Whereas, this study was performed in normal environmental temperature. The second reason is the chelating properties of vitamin C, that can be increased absorption minerals in birds intestinal. But due to advanced digestive tract of laying hens, maybe decrease its properties. Conclusion: The results of present study showed that biochar across all levels had similar cost with control group, and it had no effect on egg shell quality and performance of laying hens. There was no significant interaction between biochar and vitamin C regrding to performance, egg shell quality traits and cost of diet during 50 to 61 weeks of age, too. Therefore, biochar can be completely replaced with dietary mineral supplements of laying hens due to its low cost, high availability, easy production without adverse effects on performance and egg quality traits.

Low organic matter content and alkaline pH of calcareous soils in arid and semi-arid regions are the main reasons for the low nutrient availabilities for plants in these soils. One way to improve the chemical properties and fertility of calcareous soils is the application of organic substances such as biochar produced from pyrolysis of organic wastes. However, biochars have an almost predominant alkaline pH, which exacerbates plant nutrient deficiencies in calcareous soils when used for a long time. Pyrolysis of some organic wastes under controlled temperature conditions can lead to the production of acidic biochar. The effect of acidic biochars on several chemical properties of two calcareous soils in Isfahan province was investigated in the present study. Treatments included two types of biochar (pine cone and rice husk), three levels of biochar addition (one, three, and six percent), two types of soil (a sandy loam (Tiran) and a clay loam (Lavark)), and two incubation periods (one and six months). The results showed that applying biochar could slightly decrease soil pH but raised soil electrical conductivity. In addition, the amount of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available concentration of manganese in all treatments and the concentrations of available phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, and copper in the most of treatments showed a significant increase compared to the control. Amending soil with biochar at a 6% rate caused the most significant changes in the measured parameters in both soil types. In general, the results of this study indicated that acidic biochar produced from pine cones and rice husk can be used as a suitable conditioner to improve the chemical properties and fertility of calcareous soils.

Introduction: Landfill leachate is a highly toxic and hazardous form of wastewater due to its complex composition characteristics. Effective removal of heavy metals from landfill leachate is of great concern due to the fact that toxic metals can seriously threaten the food chain, and therefore the human health. The main objective of this work was to study the utilizing of low-cost pruning residues in the production of biochar and its application in removal of lead (Pb) from landfill leachate. Material and methods: Leachate produced in Babol municipal solid waste landfill was used as an adsorbent solution. Pruning residues were collected and used for biochar preparation. Biochar produced under the pyrolytic temperature of 700°C with a 1-hour retention time. The adsorption mechanism of pruning waste biochar to Pb was analyzed through BET surface area and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests. Batch experiments were performed to study the effects of adsorption parameters on Pb removal. The influence of contact time (30-300 min), adsorbent dosage (1-50 g/L), as well as particle size (1-2 mm and 63-75 μm) was investigated. Moreover, the kinetic and isotherm models were applied to the experimental data to predict the adsorption parameters. Results and discussion: The results obtained from the analysis of the untreated Babol landfill leachate was revealed that the Pb concentration was about 4.94 mg L-1. The surface area of the produced biochar was determined to be 292.44 m2 g-1. SEM microstructure of the biochar showed the developed surface area with visible pores. All of these data seem to suggest a great potential for pruning residues biochar to Pb removal. The adsorption of Pb was mainly affected by contact time, adsorbent dose, and biochar particle size. Higher contact time and adsorbent dosage showed higher uptake of Pb. Whereas, the uptake of Pb ions onto pruning residues biochar was substantially reduced with increase the biochar particle size. Maximum Pb percentage removal was observed at a contact time of 90 min and with an optimum biochar dosage of 20 g L-1 (89.06% removal) for biochar with 1-2 mm particle size. While, biochar with particle size of 64-75 μm can removed Pb to almost 100% at a contact time of 120 min and with an optimum biochar dosage of 20 g L-1. The kinetic study showed that adsorption can be well described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. This supports the chemisorption theory behind the pseudo-second order kinetic model for the adsorption system. The results of isotherm models implied that the behaviors of the isotherms are more appropriate for the Langmuir model, showing a monolayer adsorption capacity for Pb. Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be stated that the removal method used in the present research can be studied and compared along with other methods of landfill leachate treatment and pruning waste management. Biochar as an efficient strategy for the improvement of soil properties and organic waste management may reduce the potential effects of abiotic stresses and increase soil fertility. However, the effects of this organic amendment on soil microbial indicators under combined salinity and pollution have not been studied yet. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of sugarcane bagasse biochar on some soil bioindicators in a Cd-polluted soil under saline and non-saline conditions. A factorial experiment was carried out with two factors, including NaCl salinity (control, 20 and 40 mM NaCl) and sugarcane bagasse biochar (soils unamended with biochar, amended with uncharred bagasse, 400 oC biochar, and 600 oC) at 1% (w/w) using a completely randomized design. Results showed that salinity increased the mobility of Cd (12-17%), and subsequently augmented its toxicity to soil microorganisms as indicated by significant decreases in the abundance and activities of the soil microbial community. Conversely, sugarcane bagasse biochar application reduced the concentration of soil available Cd (14-18%), increased the contents of soil organic carbon (89-127%), and dissolved organic carbon (4-70%), and consequently alleviated the effect of both abiotic stresses on soil microbial community and enzyme activity. In conclusion, this experiment demonstrated that the application of sugarcane bagasse biochar could reduce the salinity-induced increases in available Cd and mitigate the interaction between salinity and Cd pollution on the measured soil bioindicators.

Today, problems such as global climate change and its consequences such as floods, droughts, melting glaciers, ocean water level rise are considered globally, and actions should be taken immediately to contain these problems. Many sources pointed to the positive aspects of using organic matter such as biochar to retain soil moisture and plant nutrients, reducing nitrate leaching and greenhouse gas emissions. Biochar is a carbon-rich compound produced by pyrolysis of natural organic matter. In the present study, 0% biochar (B1), 2.5% biochar (B2), 5% biochar (B3), and 7.5% biochar (B4), 2.5% wheat straw (W1), and 5% straw (W2) were added to soil with clay loam texture (S1) and sandy loam soil (S2). This pot experiment was implemented based on a completely randomized design in three replications in the greenhouse using 15N Isotope tracing method. Due to biochar application, Crop yield and nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency increased. This increase was particularly significant in S1B4 treatment (P < 0.01) and reached up to 35%. Straw reduced nitrogen fertilizer utilization in S1W2 and S2W2 treatments by 94% and 87%, respectively

Pollution of the environment by heavy metals, especially soil pollution with cadmium (Cd), is one of the most important environmental problems. Also, salinization of soils due to a decrease in irrigation water quality reduces plants growth. To investigate the effect of sugarcane bagasse biochars and salinity on Cd available and Cd fractions in a contaminated soil (15 mg kg-1 Cd), an experimental factorial design in a completely randomized design including (1) biochar factor with control, 1% (w/w) bagasse, 1% (w/w) biochar 400 °C and 1% (w/w) biochar 600 °C, and (2) salinity factor with control, 20, and 40 mmol kg-1 as sodium chloride were performed in 3 replications. The amount of available Cd was determined by the DTPA-TEA method and the Cd fractions were determined by Tessier et al. (1979). The results showed that biochar and salinity had no significant effect on soil pH (P > 0.05) but increased soil EC (P < 0.05). Interaction of biochar and salinity was not significant (P > 0.05) on available Cd and Cd fractions. Biochar application reduced Cd -DTPA-TEA (P < 0.05), whereas salinity increased Cd -DTPA-TEA (P < 0.05). Application of biochar prepared at 600 °C reduced (P < 0.05) exchangeable Cd (23.8%) and increased (P < 0.05) Cd associated with iron and manganese oxides (25.2%) and residual (15.6%) compared to the control. The results showed that salinity had no significant effect on the Cd fractions (P > 0.05) and soil treated with sugarcane bagasse biochar can reduce Cd available due to changing the Cd distribution from unstable forms to stable forms.

Oil contaminated soil is a vital threat to the environment. The aim of the present research was to investigate the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), and heavy metals of nickel and vanadium reduction using Prosopis juliflora, under different treatments of biochar and compost in pots. One-year-old P. juliflora seedlings were planted in pots containing oil sludge. The pots included 1 and 2% of compost and biochar. Furthermore, two control treatments including with and without P. juliflora were used for the study. This study was conducted in the complete randomized plot sampling with three replications. After six months, soil samples were taken from the pots and transferred to the laboratory. Then, the concentration of TPH, nickel, and vanadium was determined. The results indicated that the least TPH belonged to the compost 2% treatment (10.63 ppm), which was significantly different compared with other studied treatments. The highest value belonged to the control treatment without P. juliflora (22.57 ppm). The highest value of vanadium belonged to the control treatment (69.50 mg/kg). Compost 2% had the least values of vanadium (47.66 mg/kg). Comparison between treatments showed no significant differences among compost 1% (117.17 mg/kg), compost 2% (118.00 mg/kg), and biochar 2% (116.67 mg/kg). The highest reduction of nickel was observed within the mentioned treatments. Therefore, using biochar and compost can improve the phytoremediation capacity of P. juliflora.

One of the significant factors affecting biochar properties is the pyrolysis temperature. This study aimed to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the properties and fractionation of Zn and Pb in biochars produced by sewage sludge. Biochars were prepared at temperatures of 300 to 700 °C and the physicochemical properties, availability, and fractionation of Zn and Pb were investigated. The results showed that pH, pHzpc, percentage of calcium carbonate, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and porosity in biochars were higher than in the feedstock. By increasing biochar production temperature, the mentioned properties increased. FT-IR revealed that the OH functional group is present in free form, either in the structure of C-OH and -COOH and aliphatic-CH2 groups in the sewage sludge. By converting sewage sludge to biochar, the intensity of these peaks decreased. In contrast, peaks representing complex aromatic structures appeared. The availability of Zn and Pb in biochar was reduced as compared to sewage sludge. The results of fractionation indicated that sewage sludge has bio-availability and toxicity of Pb and Zn. the amount of oxide and residual fractions of these two metals increased by converting sewage sludge to biochar at different temperatures. Therefore, it seems that biochar production from sewage sludge reduces the toxicity and bioavailability of Zn and Pb. Also, by incrementing the temperature of production, the bio-availability potential (bonding with organic matter), and non-toxicity (residual) of these metals increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tobacco is cultivated as a valuable crop in more than one hundred countries in different climatic conditions and plays an important role in the economies of some countries.This study was performed to evaluate the effect of mycorrhiza and azotobacter with application of biocahr on tobacco leaf yield, root characteristics and phytochemical components under rainfed conditions for two growing seasons at 2016 and 2017 at the Research Farm of Tirtash Tobacco Research and Education Center of Mazandaran province, Iran. A factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with four replications and three treatments was performed. Treatments consisted of biochar (B) at three levels (0, 4 and 8 ton/ha), mycorrhiza (M), and azotobacter (A) both at two levels (without and with application). Application of 4 ton/ha biocahr increased fresh yield by 26%, cured yield 26%, root dry weight 44%, root fresh weigth 37%, root length 41%, nicotine 3%, while reduced sugar content 24% and sugar to nicotine ratio by 21% as compared to zero level of biochar application. The effect of mycorrhiza and azotobacter application on tobacco leaf yield but it was not significant, however, azotobacter had the most significant effect on nicotine content (17%). There was a positive and significant correlation between root characteristics and tobacco leaf yield. Due to the lack of significant differences between levels of 4 and 8 tons per hectare of biochar in most of the evaluated traits in terms of economic approach, the use of 4 tons per hectare of biochar along with mycorrhiza and Azotobacter to reduce the adverse of low water effects in rainfed farms and ameliorate the tobacco growth is recommended. Also azotobacter application is considered as desirable factor to increase of nicotine in tobacco.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of incorporating organic modifiers such as biochar with soil is stabilizing carbon, improving fertility, absorbing pollutants, and consequently increasing crop production. Biochar is a biofuel and the resultant of organic matters thermocouples. Biochars are produced in high temperature ovens and are commonly alkaline and so suitable for the acidic soils. However, if the raw materials are heated at low temperatures, the resulting biochar can be acidic and useful for modifying calcareous soils. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two types of acidic biochars of rice husk and pine cone for modifying the physical properties of two calcareous soils of Isfahan province. Materials and Methods: Based on a preliminary experiment, rice husk biochar (pH=5.64) and pine cone biochar (pH=6.56) produced at 300 °C were selected for this study. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized factorial design with three replications. Treatments included two types of biochar (pine cone and rice husk) mixed with soil at one, three and six percent (g/g), two types of soil (a sandy loam, Tiran and a clay loam, Lavark), and two incubation periods of one and six months, with 4 controls and a total of 28 pots. The treated soils were kept in an incubator at 25 °C and 60% of field (pot) capacity. At the end of the incubation periods, the soil moisture contents at field capacity and the permanent wilting point were measured respectively using sand-kaolin box and pressure plate devices and then soil available water contents was calculated. Results: The results showed that the addition of biochars improved some physical properties of soils. The treatment of the soils with 3% and 6% of biochars caused significant increases in the available water (AW) in the sandy loam soils compared to the control. The physical quality index of Dexter (SDexter) fitted by van Genuchten–Mualem was significantly increased in the sandy loam soil amended with 6% of the biochars and in the clay loam soil amended with 3% and 6% of the biochars. The use of biochars also improved the physical quality of the soil, described by the Dexter index, from poor to very good. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that addition of 6% rice husk biochar to the clay loam soil and at the 30 days incubation period, could improve soil properties. Therefore, according to these findings, the biochars produced from pine cones and rice husk can be suggested as a suitable conditioner for improving physical properties of the regional calcareous soils. In conclusion, this experiment demonstrated that the application of sugarcane bagasse biochar could reduce the salinity-induced increases in available Cd and mitigate the interaction between salinity and Cd pollution on the measured soil bioindicators. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of rice husk, rice husk biochar, cow manure and chemical fertilizers on the morphological and physiological characteristics of coliseum maple (Acer cappadocicum Gled.) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) seedlings. A total of 60 pots were considered for nine modifying treatments and nursery soil with three replications in a completely randomized design in Lajim nursery located in Savadkuh county, north of Iran. Results showed that different treatments had significant effects on some morphological characteristics of ash. The highest diameter, height, stem length of this species were observed in 150 g of cow manure treatment and the highest dry leaf weight was observed in 300 g of cow manure treatment. Different treatments had significant effects on the height of first stage, leaf area, volume, cross section and length of roots, leaf dry weight and stem volume of coliseum maple seedlings. The highest height in first stage of this species was observed in the control and the highest root volume was observed in the treatments of 300 and 150 g of cow manure and 2% of rice husk treatments. The highest root cross section, root length, leaf dry weight and stem volume of coliseum maple seedlings were observed in 300 g of cow manure treatment and the highest mean leaf area was observed in 150 g of cow manure treatment. In addition, no significant difference was observed in chlorophyll content and photosynthesis of different treatments. In general, the obtained results show that the use of cow manure compared to chemical fertilizers and biochar has a better function in increasing the growth of Fraxinus excelsior and Acer cappadocicum seedlings during a period of plant growth in the nursery. Background and Objectives: Organic matter improves the physical condition of the soil and due to the increase in water holding capacity of the soil, changes the pattern of contaminant uptake and prevents them from leaching into groundwater. Dispersion is important factor affecting soil solute transport in porous media that used in the advection-dispersion equation and it is a function of the transmission distance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of biochar on the leaching process of deltamethrin in soil columns. During this study, the Breakthrough curve and dispersion coefficient of this pesticide in vertical soil columns were determined. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in soil columns with a height of 15 and 30 cm and in a period of 12, 23, 56 and 112 days and including different levels of 1.5 and 3 WP% (Weight percent) of wheat biochar and control treatment as a completely randomized factorial design. The concentration of deltamethrin used was 300 cc per thousand liters per hectare. To determine the residual concentration, the pesticide was sprayed on the surface only once with the recommended dose and according to the considered irrigation periods, the changes of the pesticide over time and at different depths of the soil columns were studied. In this study, Brigham's analytical method was used to obtain the dispersion coefficient. Analysis of variance and comparison of means in the studied treatments was performed using LSD statistical test and SAS 9.4 software. Results: The results showed that the residual concentrations of pesticides in 1.5 and 3% of biochar treatments compared to the control were decreased 26 and 43%, at depths of 0 -15 cm and 37 and 17% at depths of 15-30 cm respectively. Based on the results, pesticide uptake and stabilization in 3% biochar treatment was more than other treatments. In the control treatment, with increasing soil depth, it was observed that the dispersion coefficient decreased, in the modified treatment with biochar 1.5%, the dispersion increased while in the biochar 3% treatment, the dispersion coefficient decreased significantly by increasing the sample length. Deltamethrin dispersion coefficient in 15 cm columns for control, biochar 1.5 and 3% treatments were 5.37, 1, 3.59 cm and in 30 cm columns 3.91, 1.27, 0.92 cm was obtained, respectively. Conclusion: Biochar production is very convenient and cost-effective and is successful in restricting the movement and stabilization of pesticides in the soil and by increasing its weight percentage in the soil, due to the surface area of biochar can control the movement of pesticides. The present study was intended to improve the chemical properties of a saline-sodic soil using the individual application of alfalfa residue and two biochars produced from sugarcane bagasse and walnut shell, at the weighting ratio of 5%; their concomitant application with gypsum, aluminum sulfate and the mixture of these two chemical amendments was considered. The experiment was conducted in three replications using the factorial experiment in a completely randomized design. After four months of incubation, the soil samples were measured for their main chemical properties. The results showed that alfalfa residues were the most effective treatment to reduce the soil pH; so the concomitant application of this organic amendment with gypsum lowered the soil pH from 9.13 in the control (untreated soil) to 7.24. It was also observed that the addition of gypsum and/or aluminum sulfate to the soil led to the increase of the soil electrolyte concentration and consequently, the increase of soil electrical conductivity to three times greater than control, through an increase of ions, like calcium and sulfate in the soil solution. Increasing the soluble sodium concentration by replacing exchangeable sodium by other similar ions showed that the studied treatments enhanced the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), which could be regulated by washing. Concomitant application of the walnut-shell biochar with gypsum had the most increasing effect on the soil SAR, enhancing it from 22.6 in the control to 54.3. Potassium was released from organic amendments, improving the soil general conditions; addition of chemical amendments elevated soil exchangeable potassium contents; however, the elevated soil available phosphorus contents were less influenced by chemical amendments application. As the conclusion, it seems that the positive impacts of the applied chemical and organic amendments would supplement each other; as a result, the concurrent use of both treatments not only improves the bad soil chemical properties, but also enhances the soil fertility.

Pollution of the environment by heavy metals, especially soil pollution with cadmium (Cd), is one of the most important environmental problems. Also, salinization of soils due to a decrease in irrigation water quality reduces plants growth. To investigate the effect of sugarcane bagasse biochars and salinity on Cd available and Cd fractions in a contaminated soil (15 mg kg-1 Cd), an experimental factorial design in a completely randomized design including (1) biochar factor with control, 1% (w/w) bagasse, 1% (w/w) biochar 400 °C and 1% (w/w) biochar 600 °C, and (2) salinity factor with control, 20, and 40 mmol kg-1 as sodium chloride were performed in 3 replications. The amount of available Cd was determined by the DTPA-TEA method and the Cd fractions were determined by Tessier et al. (1979). The results showed that biochar and salinity had no significant effect on soil pH (P > 0.05) but increased soil EC (P < 0.05). Interaction of biochar and salinity was not significant (P > 0.05) on available Cd and Cd fractions. Biochar application reduced Cd -DTPA-TEA (P < 0.05), whereas salinity increased Cd -DTPA-TEA (P < 0.05). Application of biochar prepared at 600 °C reduced (P < 0.05) exchangeable Cd (23.8%) and increased (P < 0.05) Cd associated with iron and manganese oxides (25.2%) and residual (15.6%) compared to the control. The results showed that salinity had no significant effect on the Cd fractions (P > 0.05) and soil treated with sugarcane bagasse biochar can reduce Cd available due to changing the Cd distribution from unstable forms to stable forms. Wetting pattern in a trickle irrigation system is one of the most important characteristics that should be taken into consideration for designing the irrigation systems. Improving the dimensions of the wetting pattern will increase the water use efficiency and irrigation systems. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of rice husk and its biochar application on the wetting pattern in a silty clay soil under surface trickle irrigation. A box with the length of 200, the width of 50 and the height of 100 cm was used. To easily fill and empty the model, it was filled up to a height of 50 cm. The rice husk and its biochar were added to the soil at the rates of 0, 1 and 2 mass percentages based on a factorial arrangement of the treatments in a completely randomized design with three replications. Biochar was prepared in a special furnace at 500°C without oxygen. The experiments were done with a flow rate of 4 liters per hour with the irrigation time of 3 hours. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the organic treatments increased the soil water content in the range of field capacity to a permanent wilting point; the highest increase was observed for the biochar 2% treated soil. Also, the addition of rice husk and biochar in the silty clay soil reduced the horizontal advance and increased the vertical advance wetting pattern.

Fruits and citrus wastes are generated in the food industry in large quantities. Their management in Iran, as one of the major hubs of fruits and citrus production, is of great importance. In this study, the biochar samples were prepared from pomegranate, orange and lemon peel waste produced in a juice factory using the pyrolysis process in the range of 400-500 °C; then their efficiency for zinc adsorption from an aqueous solution was investigated. The kinetic and isotherm data of zinc adsorption were fitted by the linear and nonlinear forms of the Langmuir and Frendlich isotherm models and the first-order and second-order pseudo-kinetics models. The results showed that under the experimental conditions applied, the maximum amount of zinc absorption by biochars derived from pomegranate, orange and lemon peel was 2.42, 1.83 and 3.17 mg/g, respectively. The results of adsorption isotherm models also showed that the use of the linear form could lead to a completely different interpretation, as compared to the original form of the model. Based on the linear forms, the Langmuir isotherm was the best; meanwhile, according to the non-linear forms, the Freundlich isotherm was the best model to describe the adsorption data. In addition, the reaction kinetics indicated that both original and linear models had the same results, and the data were better fitted by the pseudo-second order model.

In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, woody and perennial plants are considered as a key factor in wind speed reduction and windblown sands sedimentation. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of different levels of soil additives on morphological characteristics of Calligonum bungei Boiss. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in factorial plan in a randomized complete block design RCBD. In design of experiments, applied treatments were natural and municipal waste compost biochars as soil additives, each in four levels of 0, 1, 3 and 5%, mycorrhiza present or absent, and plant type. Results showed that treatment NO. 7 cause increased 34.62% in plant height, 42.38% in collar diameter, 554.02% canopy cover volume, 124.04% root length, 30.92% fresh weight of shoot, 36.23% fresh weight of root in mycorrhizal plants and treatment NO. 23 cause increased 39.24% in plant height, 35.98% collar diameter, 152.1% canopy cover volume, 17.74% root length, 68.53% fresh weight of shoot, and 20.75% fresh weight of root in non-mycorrhizal plant accordance with control treatment. Among the used treatment, those in the absence of mycorrhiza due to poor-quality of mycorrhiza and lack of interconnection between plant and mycorrhizal fungal networks had better growth than those of non-mycorrhizal plants. According to the results, treatment No. 7 due to low cost, greater accessibility, improve of soil fertility, and plant establishment were recommended in desert regions.

Background and Objective: Today, landfill management of municipal waste and soil pollution with heavy metals are major environmental problems. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of Shazand municipal waste compost and Saveh pomegranate peel biochar on decreasing Pb availability in soil and sorghum plant. Materials and Methods: Treatments consisted of applying Shazand municipal waste compost (0, 10 and 20 ton/‌ha‌) and Saveh pomegranate peel biochar (0 and 15 g/‌kg‌) in a Pb polluted soil (0, 600, 800 and 1000 mg Pb/‌kg soil). After 8 weeks of sorghum planting (Kimya CV.), the soil physio-chemical properties and soil and plant Pb concentration were measured. Results: Applying 20 ton/ha‌ municipal waste compost with 15 g/‌kg‌ biochar increased soil pH by 0.4 units and decreased soil Pb availability by 11%. The similar results were observed for the root and shoot Pb concentrations, when the same amount of manure in a Pb polluted soil was applied (1000mg Pb/‌kg soil) that decreased the root and shoot Pb concentration by 1.8 and 2.2 times, respectively. Conclusion: The result of this experiment showed that applying Shazand municipal waste compost and biochar can increase soil sorption properties and decrease soil or plant Pb concentration. However, the role of these organic amendments on supplying plant nutritional needs cannot be ignored.

Introduction: Rice is a staple food source and the most important grain in developing countries, which is most commonly consumed by more than 90 percent of the world populations. Moreover, this plant is produced and consumed in Asia. However this major crop faces severe limitations such as water scarcity and other environmental stresses. Limited water resources along with climate change effects, have increased attention to methods which improve water use efficiency in crops such as rice cultivation. On the other hand, traditional irrigation methods for rice production often waste considerable fraction of irrigation water. Therefore, it is necessary to modify irrigation and other farming methods. Furthermore, using biochar and nitrogen fixing bacteria as organic biofertilizers can be effective methods to improve water use efficiency and yield attributes of rice plant. Therefore, the present research was conducted to investigate the effect of biochar and Azosprillum lipoferum rhizobacteria on yield and water use efficiency on Tarom Hashemi rice cultivar of under flooded and alternating irrigation regimes. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted at the research fields of the Sari Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University in 2017 and 2018. The experimental site is located at 36º 39ʹ42ʺ N latitude and 53º03'54ʺ E longitude with -11 m above sea level. Soil samples were taken from depths of 0-30 cm before land preparation. The experiment was done in factorial split-split plot arrangement with complete randomized blocks based design with three replications. Treatments included two irrigation management methods (flooding and irrigation regimes) in combination with nine fertilizers levels (100% of recommended nitrogen or N100, N100+ 10 ton biochar or biochar 10, N100+ biochar 20, N75, N75+ biochar 10, N100+ biochar 20, N50, n50+ biochar 10 and N100+ biochar 20) as main plots and seedling inoculation with Azospirillum lipoferum bacteria (without inoculation was also included as control) as sub plots. Plot ridges were covered by plastic sheets and inserted into the soil at 50 cm to prevent water flowing from one plot to the others. The plots were then leveled and 3-4 leaf seedlings stage. A specific number of seedlings were gently washed and placed for 30 minutes in a pan containing 10 L of water mixed with 1 L of bacterial inoculum. Carboxymethyl cellulose, 15 g, was added to increase adhesion of bacteria into the plant roots. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were applied according to the results of soil analysis. Weeds and pests were controlled mechanically or by hand and no herbicides or pesticides were used. Results and Discussion: Results showed that biochar and nitrogen fertilizers, irrigation methods, and seedling inoculation with bacteria had significant effects on water use efficiency indices. Comparison of means of interaction effects showed that the highest paddy yield (5950.43 and 5330.78 kg/ha, respectively) were observed by flooding irrigation method in combination with N50 + biochar 20 treatment and inoculated by Azospirillum lipoferum bacteria and alternating irrigation management method which was along with N50 + biochar 20 without inoculation. Alternating irrigation plots experienced water shortage in some growth stages and therefore slightly lower paddy yield is acceptable. Application of biochar 20 and flooding or alternating methods which treated by N75 and N50, respectively showed 49.1% increase in economic efficiency index. Conclusion: In general, application of 20 ton biachar along with 75% nitrogen fertilizers led to 42.8% increase in economic advantages in alternating irrigation method as compared to the flooding systems. To study the effect of biochar and superabsorbent on the chemical composition of Satureja rechingeri Jamzad essential oil, under drought stress conditions, a factorial split-plot experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications in 2018-2019 at the Medicinal Plant Research Farm of Lorestan University. Treatments included drought stress as the main plot at three levels (100, 80, and 60% of water requirement) and cow manure biochar at two levels (0 and 10 ton ha-1), and stockosorb hydrogel at three levels (0, 60, and 120 mg plant-1) as subplots. Twenty-four compounds were identified in aerial parts essential oil of the plant using GC-MS. The main constituents included carvacrol (76.6%), γ-terpinene (5.8%), p-cymene (3%), terpinen-4-ol (2.5%), 1,8-cineole (2%), and linalool (0.9%). The results showed that the highest amount of carvacrol (90.8%) was observed in severe moisture stress+biochar+60 mg stockosorb and the lowest (73.8%) was observed in stress-free control treatment with biochar+120 mg stockosorb. The results showed that interactions between drought stress and biochar had a significant effect on essential oil yield. Also, no correlation was observed between the presence and absence of stockosorb superabsorbent with different compounds of Satureja rechingeri essential oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochar is a soil amendment that has a high capacity to adsorb heavy metals. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of cow manure and its biochar on nickel adsorption and to determine the best models to describe the kinetics of Ni retention. Accordingly, cow manure and its biochar were added to the soils at the levels of 0, 2 and 4%, and samples were incubated for 90 days. Soil samples were equilibrated with 100 mg L-1 Ni solutions for periods of 1 to 2880 min. Then, the concentration of nickel was measured. Today, to reduce the risks of contaminants, new remediation techniques have been focused on low-cost and environmentally friendly manners. Given the frequency of access, inexpensiveness and good physical and chemical properties, biochar has a high potential for the remediation of water pollutants. In this paper, the efficiency of chitosan engineered biochar (Bc-Ch) and pristine biochar (Bg-Bc) prepared from sugarcane bagasse biomass (Bg) in the Cd2+ removal in aqueous solution was investigated. To this aim, the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage and solution pH on cadmium removal were evaluated by adsorption isotherms and Kinetic models. The results indicated that the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be well fitted with the process of cadmium biosorption. The maximum adsorption capacities of Bc-Ch, Bg-Bc and Bg ,according to Langmuir model, were found to be 32/78 mg/g, 11/57 mg/g and 2/23 mg/g, respectively. For these absorbents, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed the best fit to the experimental adsorption data. This study, therefore, indicated that the chitosan engineered biochar could be used as an effective, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly sorbent to remediate heavy metals contamination in the environment. Synergistic relationships between mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and organic compounds affect the mobility of the micronutrient elements in the rhizosphere and improve their bioavailability. In order to evaluate the effect of biochar and pruning waste compost of apple and grape trees, as well as AMF, on micronutrient bioavailability in calcareous soil at the wheat rhizosphere, an experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design under greenhouse conditions in a rhizobox study. Some factors including the organic sourses (pruning waste biochar, pruning waste compost and control), microbial inoculation (AMF and no inoculation) were considered. At the end of the growth period, Organic matter (OM) content and bioavailability of micronutrients including iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu) and Manganese (Mn) in the rhizosphere and their uptake by wheat plant were determined. The results indicated that OM, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu were significantly increased in the rhizosphere soil under the influence of organic sources and mycorrhizal inoculation. Furthermore, biochar application in the mycorrhizal tratment resulted in 74.73% and 19.28% increase in Fe and Mn, as compared to non-inoculated conditions, in rhizosphere. The presence of mycorrhizal fungi increased the bioavailability of 94.66% and 29.54% Zn and Cu in the compost treatment, as compared to non-inoculated ones.
