This article focuses on a learning objective, as part of a teacher education course at a Swedish university, where student teachers should be able to discuss their own professional development and identify further development needs. Since both research and policy documents highlight professional development as an important part of teacher education, it is important to study professional development from the perspective of student teachers. The theoretical starting point is Communities of Practice (CoP), and the study focuses on knowledge and learning within a social community. Ten subject teacher students and six vocational teacher students are interviewed about their descriptions of what the professional development for teachers in teacher education means for them, which results in six prominent themes: 1) the developmentof identity formation, 2) the development of subject specific and vocational knowledge, 3) the development of leadership, 4) the development of relationship-building, 5) the development of knowledge about policy documents, laws, rules and regulations, 6) the development in relation to changes in the society. Despite common denominators in the students’ descriptions of professional development, there are also nuanced differences that can be understood by positioning actors about the (vocational) teacher education community. The vocational teacher students frequently connect their professional knowledge to industry and working life, whereas the subject teacher students often connect their subject knowledge to university courses and research. Both the vocational teacher students and the subject teacher students in the study describe that they need to stay up-to-date and continue developing their competence in pedagogy. However, the vocational teacher students specifically highlight the need for pedagogical knowledge within the school environment, rather than in the context of working life and workshop settings. This may be because some vocational teacher students are accustomed to training and teaching interns in these environments as part of their professional practice.

In trying to respond to this question, this article points to bob hund’s roots in modernist avant-garde aesthetics, and examines what such winding connections between different traditions might mean. Aesthetic practices such as decontextualization, irony, anacoluthon wordplay, and lists change when they are used in new and different historical contexts. If high modernism was reduced to form, and Duchampian neodadaism to lifestyle choices, then bob hund opens new possibilities for aesthetic practices in today's anthropocenic hypercapitalism.

Revealed? On Karl Vennberg, Paul de Man, Literature and Fascism Fascism uses ideas that it shares with other modern and contemporary scientific, political and artistic rationalities. Not least, a particular view of meaning-making as dependent on belonging ties it together with one of the most basic ways that modern society understands identities and communities. This article puts texts by Karl Vennberg and Paul de Man in relation to these contexts. The revelations of their connections to fascism change the way we read their texts. But how does it change? How should it change? And what significance can this change have for our understanding of the relationship between literature and fascism? The article discusses these issues in relation to some texts by the two, in which they present poetry as a refusal to accept that meaning would depend on belonging to a community.

This article argues for a broader and more socially relevant photosynthesis instruction in compulsory science education. Presently, the predominant practice is traditional instruction, focusing on students' conceptual understanding of photosynthesis based on molecular and energy-related principles. Views of what is referred to as scientific literacy change in line with the new values and demands of a globalised society. Scientific literacy has evolved from a narrow conception of natural sciences to a broader teaching approach, addressing science from a whole society perspective. The article discusses how photosynthesis instruction can be redirected to future issues such as societal and sustainability and argues for a wider approach to scientific literacy involving active citizenship to address present and future sustainability challenges. A scientific literacy model is presented, along with its relation to the concept of powerful knowledge, defined as the kind of knowledge students need to have control and agency in their own lives. Powerful knowledge is discussed in terms of how photosynthesis instruction could be used to address societal and sustainability issues such as climate change, food chains, energy issues and food production. The need for a new and updated photosynthesis education 2.0 is presented.

In this paper, the development of the understanding of the simplicity of the first metaphysical principle in the Neoplatonic tradition is analyzed. It is argued that Plotinus gives the highest priority to simplicity, making it the most important aspect of his understanding of the first principle, and thereby isolating the first principle and making it separate from the world. It is argued that Proclus gives less priority to simplicity and thereby opens up for a real relation between the One and the world and that Pseudo-­Dionysius takes Proclus's modification of Plotinus further and priori­tizes the fact that God is beyond being over the fact that God is simple. This gradual change in these three thinkers is placed into dialogue with contemporary discussions about divine simplicity. It is argued that divine simplicity becomes a theoretical problem when it is understood as a positive description of God's being and not as apophatic theology. To stress this point further, Denys Turner's thinking about apophatism is used to argue that divine simplicity should be understood from a most apo­phatic level of thinking, where it is neither understood as a positive nor negative way of describing God's being.

The Cancer Registry of Norway (CRN) has been important in registry-based research in Norway for decades. The use of CRN in combination with other population-based registries and health surveys have been the basis for numerous research projects, which has contributed to fill important knowledge gaps. Researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and CRN have a long tradition of using these data sources to address research questions of common interests such as e.g. the effect of life style and diet on cancer risk. CRN and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway have co-existed for a long period, making it possible to study cancer incidence and birth characteristics over generations. During the last decades, several new registries such as the Norwegian Prescription Database and the Norwegian Patient Registry have been established, providing opportunities for studying for example drug use and cancer risk and the influence of comorbidities on the development of cancer. In the future, the CRN will be an even more valuable data source when also other population-based registries and health surveys have existed for longer time periods.

Background: Based on internationally published studies on procalcitonin (PCT)-guided antibiotic therapy for community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections, we decided to test PCT as a diagnostic and guiding test for such patients admitted to our hospital. We aimed to present a PCT-algorithm as a more standardised treatment regimen and possibly reduce the use of antibiotics. Materials and methods: During a two-year period, starting January 2012, medical doctors registered 93 patients and regarded recommended antibiotic therapy before and after PCT test results were revealed. A PCT treatment-algorithm was available. Results: Additional knowledge of the corresponding PCT-value led to withdrawal of antibiotic treatment in seven patients, as opposed to theoretically 59, according to the PCT-guided algorithm. Conclusions: Our study showed a weak, non- linear correlation between CRP and PCT values. The registration forms showed that antibiotic treatment was stopped for seven patients after knowledge of the PCT value. Hence, the PCT-algorithm was scarcely used in this study. With increasing focus on reducing the use of antibiotics, we will continue to offer PCT analysis in our hospital.

This essay discusses the changing role of arts and humanities research and education in the context of continuing transitions in knowledge politics and society at large. It argues that a conflicted history of both expansion and marginalization has conditioned the humanities for reactive critique in ways that limits its influence. This calls for a rearticulation of the role of humanistic knowledge in a time when society’s most challenging transitions are connected by their cultural dimension, understood in its most basic sense of the influence on society of human action, communication, cultural routines and value formation. To scale-up the impact of the humanities, and sharpen its knowledge claims, a development towards integrative and plural forms of knowledge environments is suggested.

This introduction outlines some of the multi- and/or transdisciplinary contexts for cultural research after the cultural turn in the 1980s and 1990s. It also briefly describes the rationale behind the open call for contributions to this thematic issue of the journal, aiming for an overview of ongoing activities within the field of cultural research in Sweden.

The article consists of a conversation about a book entitled Alltings mått: Humanistisk kunskap i framtidens samhälle (title in translation: The Measure of All Things: Humanities-Based Knowledge in the Future Society), which was published in the fall of 2012. The book critically discusses how contemporary research and higher education policies in Sweden and elsewhere have affected the development of the humanities and its role in society, arguing for a more integrated view on the politics of knowledge in the future.

In the 1980s and 1990s, theoretical developments in the human and social sciences were influenced by a much debated "cultural turn". One outcome of this in historical research was a renewed interest in the concept of "cultural history". In an anthology published in 1989 by the American historian Lynn Hunt, "the new cultural history" was launched as a critique of some of the basic conceptions of social history and the Annales school. The main purpose of this article is to review the theoretical debates that motivated the new cultural history, and to discuss some of its key concepts, most notably the concepts of culture and representation. However, since recent discussions in Scandinavia and elsewhere has been as much concerned with the general historiography of cultural history, I also explore the ways in which the "new" cultural history can be related to the "old" cultural history of the 18th and 19th centuries. In conclusion, I argue that the turn towards cultural analysis in historical research has been the productive outcome of a particular kind of transdisciplinarity rather than developments within the established disciplines.

This essay discusses, in a tentative way, the intertwined production of classifications and object-lessons in the history of museums. The essay is especially focused on two museums. The first example is Linnaeus' Hammarby, a museum located at a small estate outside the city of Uppsala that was bought by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. The second museum discussed in the paper is a collection of weapons used in connection with acts of suicide in Sweden in the late 19th century. This exhibition was arranged by a medical institute in Stockholm in the 1890s, and was open to students of forensic medicine as well as to a general audience.
