A wide diversity of elasmobranch species has been reported for waters off Venezuela; however, information regarding this group is lacking for most coastal regions. This study aimed to determine the species composition in catches made by the artisanal fishery of Sucre State, Venezuela, and to analyze size structure by sex for the most common species. During the study period (January 2016-September 2017), visits were made to the main fish markets in the city of Cumaná, Sucre State, and a total of 2,167 elasmobranchs belonging to 24 species (15 sharks and 9 rays) were quantified. The most frequently captured elasmobranch species were Mustelus higmani (36.2%), Mustelus canis (18.0%), Hypanus guttatus (15.1%), and Hypanus americanus (7.1%). The size ranges for these species were 29.3-73.7 cm total length (TL), 34.0-86.0 cm TL, 17.0-138.0 cm disc diameter (DD), and 48.0-108.0 cm DD, respectively. Considering national conservation assessments (following International Union for Conservation of Nature criteria), 7 of the species reported for the study area (M. higmani, Carcharhinus limbatus, Carcharhinus falciformis, Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias superciliosus, Prionace glauca, and Aetobatus narinari) are listed as vulnerable, and the remaining species (n = 17) have not been assessed. Current conservation efforts in Venezuela are deficient given the collapse of government institutions responsible for the management of fisheries. This has led to noncompliance with fishing regulations designed for elasmobranchs. In the future, great effort must be made to continue generating information; however, future advances in scientific research and conservation will depend largely on the recovery of the economic and political stability in Venezuela. Objective: To evaluate the clinical results of Transepithelial Crosslinking (CXL) by analyzing its efficacy in patients with progressive keratoconus. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study with 49 eyes and 37 patients aged 10 to 50 years submitted to the CXL technique in 2017 at the Instituto Panamericano da Visão, in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. The Avedro KXL system was programmed in pulsed mode with interval (1/1 second), using 45 mW/cm² with 7.2 J and 0.25% riboflavin solution of Avedro with irradiated corneas for 8 minutes. Data were collected: sex, age, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), astigmatism, pachymetry at the thinnest point and keratometric astigmatism in the preoperative and postoperative periods at 1, 6 and 12 months. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Pearson’s Chi-square, Friedman, Dunnett, and the Spearman correlation were used. Results: Twenty-three patients (62.2%) were female and 14 (37.8%) male. The mean age was 27.89 ± 10.89 years. The UDVA and CDVA significantly improved in the preoperative period in relation to 1 month (p = 0.01) and (p <0.001), 6 months (p <0.001 both) and 12 months (p <0.001 both). Astigmatism significantly reduced preoperatively in relation to 6 months (p = 0.02) and 12 months (p = 0.02). The pachymetry at the thinnest point remained constant in the period (p = 0.95). The difference between k2 and k1 (keratometric astigmatism) showed a significant reduction in the preoperative period in relation to 1 month (p = 0.01). Conclusion: The CXL technique was safe and effective in the treatment and stagnation of the disease in patients with progressive keratoconus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasound is an excellent method for the study of penis. In this article, using a critical review of the literature and teaching files, we present examples of the major findings in the ultrasound routine, focusing on trauma, priapism, Peyronie's disease, and erectile dysfunction. Biocompounds present in various edible fungi of the basidiomycetes family such as Hericium erinaceus, Lentinula edodes and Pleurotus eryngii have lead to a great interest because they have been reported to have beneficial properties for health. There are various methods for the extraction of biocompounds, in which the majority is needed the use of thermal methods which affect the action of biocompounds, the objective of this work was the application of the process of the physical method of sonication, a friendly method with the environment, the amount of total soluble solids and its relationship with the antioxidant, antimicrobiological action against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and laccase enzymatic. For the extraction of the sample, the dehydrated fruiting fungus was used after sonication and removal of solvents, the antioxidant capacity was evaluated by colorimetric methods: DPPH and ABTS.
