The turbot is a highly valued commercial species In the Republic of Bulgaria it is caught with GNS - anchored gillnets. The stock of turbot in the Black Sea is approximately 1000 tonnes. Black Sea turbot is one of the most valuable marine fish species. This report reports on the status of the stocks and fisheries of turbot in Black Sea waters based on material from local and foreign publications as well as the author's own research. For the period 2019-2022, according to official statistics, the total catch of Black Sea turbot varies widely. Particularly noticeable increases have been observed in Bulgaria and Romania, countries that severely restricted the total allowable catch of turbot in their waters in the early 1990s. Catch data for turbot in the Black Sea in 2019-2022 are presented. For many demersal fish in the Black Sea, a major problem in determining the status of the turbot population and justifying effective measures to regulate the fishery is the significant overfishing of actual catches according to official statistics. In commercial fish farming, growth performance is the most influential factor in economic profitability; so, biomass optimization has become a growing concern. We analyzed the influence of 3 harvest densities (15, 20, and 22 kg·m–3) on the growth of spotted rose snappers reared in floating net cages during a production cycle. To assess the impact of stocking density on growth performance, we used 2 indicators: final total length-at-age (12 months) and the growth rate estimated from growth models (von Bertalanffy, logistic, and Gompertz). For the first indicator, we tested for normality. We did the Kruskal–Wallis and the post hoc Kruskal–Wallis tests to compare the mean total final length from each density. Accordingly, the means of densities D15 and D20 were the same (P value = 0.22). For the second indicator, we fitted the models with the subroutine optim of the R statistical package using the L-BFGS-B algorithm. Model selection was made with the Akaike and the Bayesian information criteria. Both criteria suggested that the logistic model fitted the data best. With the best model (logistic), we did 1,000 bootstrap simulations for each density scenario to determine the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimation for the instantaneous growth rate. Because the estimates were normally distributed, we used ANOVA to test the equality of the instantaneous growth. The Tukey HSD test suggested that all means were statistically different from each other. The fastest growth rate (K = 0.275) corresponded to the cage with a density of 20 kg·m–3. These findings demonstrate that the logistic model can predict the growth of spotted rose snappers under culture conditions using floating net cages. These results strengthen the productive potential and economic profitability of snapper aquaculture using floating cage and may help the start of commercial scale aquaculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many species in the family Serranidae are hermaphrodites and of commercial importance. Paranthias colonus belongs to this family, and its reproductive traits are unknown. The present research was carried out with specimens taken from the commercial fishery on the southern coast of Jalisco, Mexico. A total of 1,541 specimens were processed, with an average length of 30.30 ± 0.10 cm and a length interval of 19.80 to 38.00 cm. Specimen gonads were analyzed macro- and microscopically. The sex ratio was 1.00:0.97 (F:M). According to the maximum monthly values of the gonadosomatic index, gonad maturity stages, and oocyte diameters, P. colonus has 2 broad reproductive periods, from March to June and from November to December. A significant correlation was found between the monthly mean values of the gonadosomatic index and the relative condition factor. Gonads in the mature stage had oocytes in 6 different development phases, with diameters that ranged from 14.30 to 417.40 μm, which means that oocyte development is asynchronous. In the testicle, the development of the germ line is of the unrestricted lobular type. This organ did not present the typical arrangement found in teleost fish, since lobes seem to be delimited by lamellae. The information developed in this study indicates that P. colonus is a gonochoric species. Average length at sexual maturity was 26.80 cm for females and 26.90 cm for males. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is an accurate, sensitive, rapid, and easy-to-perform method for gene amplification under isothermal conditions, and it has served as a powerful diagnostic tool. In this study, we used LAMP to develop a diagnostic protocol for detecting Vibrio parahaemolyticus and white spot syndrome virus in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), and Perkinsus spp. in Crassostrea spp. in Mexico. These pathogens are associated with different diseases and are considered a threat in the aquaculture industry. Infected and uninfected oysters and shrimp were obtained from farms in the northwest coast of Mexico to standardize the LAMP assay. We determined the candidate target genes in the first-round analysis of many sets of primers, and then we chose a set of primers that successfully amplified with Mexican samples. We optimized the LAMP reactions for each pathogen with the chosen primer sets using temperature gradients from 61 to 65 °C, DNA concentrations from 2.5 pg to 250.0 ng, and reaction times from 10 to 60 min. This study established a diagnostic procedure for detecting pathogens in oysters and shrimp from Mexico. The growing degradation of coral ecosystems calls on the need for biotic inventories and biodiversity quantifications in order to develop and implement conservation and management strategies. Therefore, the present study describes the composition, structure, and spatiotemporal variation of the fish community in Maguey Bay. Visual censuses were performed to sample 47 transects between January 2005 and May 2006. A total of 60 species, 47 genera, and 29 families were identified. While no temporal differences in fish composition or structure were found (analysis of similarity = 0.034, P = 0.163), abundance was greater during the dry season and the number of species and diversity were larger during the rainy season. Spatially, differences were found in fish composition and structure (analysis of similarity = 0.310, P = 0.001) and in abundance, number of species, and diversity. Abundance, species richness, and diversity were associated with habitat characteristics (diversity of substrate, coral coverage, depth, wave exposure). This study adds to existing information on fish fauna in Maguey Bay, and since data were taken before any disturbances occurred in this region, it should be helpful for analyzing the magnitude and direction of changes in the fish community. Background: The mortality of freshwater fish due to stress during various production manipulations is a severe problem, which requires a thorough understanding of the basic mechanisms involved, including the hemostasis system. Therefore, on the application level, the study of blood clotting can perform fish coagulopathies diagnostics and develop practical preventive and therapeutic anticoagulation methods for fish farming. Aim: The goal of this research was a comparative assessment of the reaction of some hemostasis parameters of two commercial fish species, carp Cyprinus carpio and tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, to the stress of different duration induced by corticosteroids. Methods: The fishes were divided into three groups: chronically stressed (induction by betamethasone), acutely stressed (induction by dexamethasone), and control animals with blood taken from the caudal hemal canal before hormone treatment(by dexamethasone and betamethasone), then 7 and 21 days after. Results and Discussion: Changes in the following parameters were studied: thrombin time, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, the concentration of fibrinogen, soluble fibrin monomer complexes, antithrombin. It was found that both hormone-induced stress and handling stress associated with blood sampling strongly increased blood clotting ability in carps (prothrombin time decrease by 78,5-86,1%, fibrinogen increase by 12,7-100%, thrombin time decrease by 83,4-85%, and antithrombin III decreases by 15,3-21,7%), while in tilapias, acceleration of blood clotting by intrinsic and extrinsic pathways were recorded by the end of the experiment only in fishes with imitation of chronic stress (prothrombin time decrease by 76,8%, activated partial thromboplastin time decrease by 20,0%, and 2,3 multiplying soluble fibrin monomer complexes). Conclusions: It was concluded that the adaptive mechanisms of the tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) organism allowed the clotting function to recover in most cases by the end of the experiment in all groups of fish, in contrast to carps (Cyprinus carpio). На прикладном уровне проведение исследования свертывания крови имеет потенциал для диагностики коагулопатий рыб и разработки практических профилактических и терапевтических противосвертывающих методов для рыбоводства. Цель: Целью этого исследования была сравнительная оценка реакции некоторых параметров гемостаза двух видов промысловых рыб - карпа Cyprinuscarpio и тиляпии Oreochromisniloticus в условиях экспериментальной модели стресса различной продолжительности, индуцированного кортикостероидами. Методы: Рыбы были подразделены на три группы: рыбы с хроническим стрессом (индукция бетаметазоном), острым стрессом (индукция дексаметазоном) и контрольные животные, кровь у которых брали из хвостового гемального канала до обработки гормонами, и далее через 7 и 21 день после. Результаты и Обсуждение: Было исследовано изменение следующих параметров коагулограммы: тромбиновое время, протромбиновое время, активированное частичное тромбопластиновое время, концентрацию фибриногена, растворимых фибрин-мономерных комплексов, антитромбина. Было установлено, что как индуцированный гормонами стресс, так и хэндлинг-стресс, связанным с забором крови, сильно увеличивают свертывающую способность крови у карпов (сокращение протромбинового времени на 78,5-86,1%, увеличение фибриногена на 12,7-100%, сокращение тромбопластинового времени на 83,4-85% и антитромбинаIIIна 15,3-21,7%), тогда как у тиляпий ускорение свертывания крови по внутреннему и внешнему путям к концу эксперимента было зафиксировано только у рыб с имитацией хронического стресса (снижение протромбинового времени на 76,8%, снижение активированного частичного тромбопластинового времени на 20,0%, увеличение фибрин-мономерных комплексов в 2,3 раза). Заключение: Можно отметить, что адаптивные механизмы организма тиляпий позволили свертывающей функции в большинстве случаев восстановиться к концу эксперимента у всех групп рыб, в отличие от карпов. A basic input for implementing ecosystem-based management measures is the knowledge on fish assemblages exploited by multispecies fisheries, such as the set gill net artisanal fishery in the Gulf of Salamanca (GoS), Caribbean Sea (Colombia), which catches a large number of high-value demersal species. Assemblages of this type were identified in this study, and significant differences (P < 0.01) between sampling periods (2008 and 2013) and seasons were found by means of a two-way permutational multivariate analysis of variance. These results were consistent with those obtained with the principal coordinates analysis, indicating the occurrence of short-term structural changes in these assemblages. Interannual and seasonal variations in discriminant and typifying species were also identified using similarity percentages, and a decreasing trend in landing per unit effort was established by the bootstrap method. On the other hand, both the geographic location of the fishing grounds and the characterization of historical changes in the set gill nets used in the GoS were determined using the traditional ecological knowledge of local fishermen, who reported a decrease in mesh sizes. In conclusion, temporal variations could be related to changes in the gill nets, the fishing trip schedules, and the spatial distribution of fishing effort, all which occurred in response to the decrease in catch rates in traditional fishing grounds. A wide diversity of elasmobranch species has been reported for waters off Venezuela; however, information regarding this group is lacking for most coastal regions. This study aimed to determine the species composition in catches made by the artisanal fishery of Sucre State, Venezuela, and to analyze size structure by sex for the most common species. During the study period (January 2016-September 2017), visits were made to the main fish markets in the city of Cumaná, Sucre State, and a total of 2,167 elasmobranchs belonging to 24 species (15 sharks and 9 rays) were quantified. The most frequently captured elasmobranch species were Mustelus higmani (36.2%), Mustelus canis (18.0%), Hypanus guttatus (15.1%), and Hypanus americanus (7.1%). The size ranges for these species were 29.3-73.7 cm total length (TL), 34.0-86.0 cm TL, 17.0-138.0 cm disc diameter (DD), and 48.0-108.0 cm DD, respectively. Considering national conservation assessments (following International Union for Conservation of Nature criteria), 7 of the species reported for the study area (M. higmani, Carcharhinus limbatus, Carcharhinus falciformis, Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias superciliosus, Prionace glauca, and Aetobatus narinari) are listed as vulnerable, and the remaining species (n = 17) have not been assessed. Current conservation efforts in Venezuela are deficient given the collapse of government institutions responsible for the management of fisheries. This has led to noncompliance with fishing regulations designed for elasmobranchs. In the future, great effort must be made to continue generating information; however, future advances in scientific research and conservation will depend largely on the recovery of the economic and political stability in Venezuela. The length-weight relationship and the condition factor are key parameters in stock assessment. Despite the fisheries potential loliginid squids have in Mexico, the group is scarcely known and no formal management has been implemented. A total of 1,105 squids captured on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Mexico were measured to estimate length-weight relations and condition factors. Except for Lolliguncula brevis and Lolliguncula argus, all species showed negative allometric growth. The 2 species with isometric growth showed a poor condition, according to Fulton's condition factor, and the rest of the species were in good health, according to the relative condition factor. The type of growth exhibited by the species identified in this study could be associated with their swimming habits or otherwise be affected by the same variables that determine the type of growth of other squid found in Mexican waters. Marine protected areas are one of the main tools in ecosystem-based fishery management. This approach requires analyzing the role of fisheries in the ecosystem by, for example, identifying fishing tactics and analyzing the spatial distribution with sufficient precision to allow us to determine whether fishing activities and the habitat or ecosystem to be protected can coexist spatially. In the Avilés Canyon System (Cantabrian Sea, Spain), we detected 6 different gears and 17 fishing tactics were identified by a non-hierarchical classification technique (CLARA). The spatial distribution of demersal fishing activity is strongly affected by the topography of the study area and the large presence of rocky ground. There is a clear spatial segregation between gear types, mainly due to the operating requirements of the gears and the distribution of target species. This minimizes conflicts between different components of the fleet. The fishing tactics targeting pelagic species were mainly located on the coast and shelf, while those targeting demersal species were used on the shelf and slope. Six silvofishery systems were constructed to estimate the potential use of mangrove seedlings for nutrient removal. Two systems did not contain seedlings (i.e., control treatment), while the remaining systems were divided into separate treatments using two mangrove species (Laguncularia racemosa and Rhizophora mangle). Each system consisted of two water tanks linked by two hoses. The first tank contained 150 poeciliid fishes, while the second contained a biological filter of gravel and sand on the bottom, as well as a hydroponic arrangement of 34 seedlings. Water exchange between both tanks was performed over a 24-h period, every ten days for seven months, and the concentration of nutrients (NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, and PO4-3) was measured every 8 h. Laguncularia racemosa showed a higher growth rate compared to R. mangle, but there were no differences regarding the growth of fishes among the six systems. Final dissolved inorganic nitrogen removal was 42% in the control treatment and 90% in both treatments using mangroves. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus removal was 45% in the control treatment, 44% in the L. racemosa treatment, and 35% in the R. mangle treatment. Our results indicate that both mangrove species are capable of removing a considerable amount of nitrogen, but phosphorus removal was unsatisfactory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The historical development of Peru's sardine (Sardinops sagax) fishery between 1978 and 2005 is described from fishery indicators (landings and effort) and environmental indicators (Pacific Decadal Oscillation [PDO] index, Southern Oscillation Index, and Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly) in order to observe the spatial and temporal variations of the fishery. During this period, the fishery indicators showed that excessive fishing pressure caused the drastic decline in abundance, as demonstrated by the low catch levels in recent years. Regarding the environmental indicators, a positive relationship with sardine landing anomalies was observed; however, the PDO index had a significant positive correlation (rPearson = 0.50; P = 0.0005; n = 45) in comparison with the other indices. The results of this study show that the effects of overfishing and adverse environmental conditions strongly impacted the Peruvian sardine population, with the consequent collapse of the fishery. Se describe el desarrollo histórico de la pesquería de la sardina Sardinops sagax en el Perú entre los años 1978 y 2005 a partir de indicadores pesqueros (desembarques y esfuerzo) e indicadores ambientales (Índice de Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico [IODP], Índice de Oscilación del Sur y Anomalías de la Temperatura Superficial del Mar) con la finalidad de observar variaciones espaciotemporales de la pesquería. Durante este periodo, los indicadores pesqueros demostraron que la excesiva presión de pesca sobre este recurso propició la drástica disminución de la abundancia, lo cual se reflejó en los bajos niveles de captura en los últimos años. Respecto a los indicadores ambientales, se observó una relación positiva con las anomalías de desembarque de sardina; el IODP presentó la mejor correlación positiva (rPearson = 0.50; P = 0.0005; n = 45) en comparación con los otros índices.
