BRAIN injuries ,LONGITUDINAL method ,PROBABILITY theory ,RESEARCH ,TRAFFIC accidents ,DISEASE incidence ,DATA analysis software - Abstract
In Greece, every year, about 35.000 people admitted to hospitals due to traumatic brain injuries and about 1.600 of them dies. The main cause is traffic accidents. They can cause death to young people, especially 19 to 25 years. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and distribution of traumatic brain injuries in the Emergency Department of the General Hospital of Sparta. Material and Methods: This study was carried out by collecting data from the hospital records and the patients log books at the Emergency Department of Sparta General Hospital. A specially designed data record sheet was employed, which included patient demographic data, hospital access method, clinical condition, injury classification and severity, possible co-existing trauma, diagnostic tests, treatment, clinical outcome as well as data relating to the trauma mechanism and causes. Statistical evaluation took place in the form of parametric tests with IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Results: A total of 1785 head trauma injury adults patients, that were referred to the Emergency Department from 2005 to 2010 were included. Exploring the association of cranium-cerebral causes with demographic factors, as far as the adults are concerned the following emerged: The causes of CCT are influenced by gender (p<0.001), nationality (p<0.001) and place of residence (p<0.001).The main cause of CCT for men was car accidents while for women it was falls. The main cause of CCT among Greeks is falls while among foreigners it is physical abuse. In all the municipalities of Laconia the main cause of CCT was car accidents, apart from the residents of Evrotas and Sparta for whom the main cause was falls. The main outcome for the adults was associated with the admission to hospital (p<0.001) and with the cause of CCT (p<0.001). Conclusions: The study highlighted the extent of this social issue at local level and the enormous problem of recording traumatic brain injury. Deficiencies identified in missing information and diversity in ways of keeping data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer and particularly lung cancer, which is the most prevalent form of cancer worldwide, constitute a major health problem in developed countries. Beyond physical problems, the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity is also high. Aim: To investigate the prevalence of two major psychological disorders, anxiety and depression in patients with lung cancer. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty eight (128) patients of a provincial general hospital filled in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Descriptive and analytic statistics was performed. SPSS 17.0 was used for analysis. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results: Males were 55.5 % of the sample. Less than 10 % had severe complications. The estimation of depression in the sample was 18%, while anxiety was estimated at 10% of the sample. Statistically significant differences were observed between depression and gender (p=0.035) and anxiety and alimentary system complications (p=0.002). Conclusion: Patients suffering from lung cancer exhibit high levels of anxiety and depression. Gender and alimentary tract complications seem to associate with psychological disorders. Purpose: The purpose of the present research was to study the phenomenon of elderly depressive symptomatology and its relationship with their quality of life as judged by the performance of daily life activities, perceived life satisfaction and leisure activities. Method and material: The studied sample consisted of107 elderly, 62 men and 45 women, who lived in the community, members of Open Care Centres for the Elderly (K.A.P.I.) and the Friendship Club of the wider area of Attica. They completed the Questionnaire of Depressive Symptomatology, the Life Satisfaction Index, the Satisfaction with Performance Scale Questionnaire and the Leisure Time Activities Questionnaire. The statistical analysis of the results was done with SPSS-v. 20,and more specifically with the method of correlation. Results: The results showed that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the level of life satisfaction of the elderly and depressive symptomatology. They also showed a statistically significant negative correlation between the ability to solve social problems and depressive symptomatology. Not statistically significant relationship between the capacity to manage the home and depressive symptomatology was recorded. Of the areas related to leisure, only activities relaxing the person, social and personal hobbiesrelated negatively with depressive symptomatology but not the physical activities, a finding which supports previous results regarding the efficiency in managing the home. Conclusions: Thus, according to the results of the present study the health professionals working with older people with depressive symptomatology should, in their interventions initially encourage activities that give life satisfaction and then focus their program on strengthening the individual to perform social activities, leisure activities and personal hobbies. Neurological impairment is common in survivors after cardiac arrest. Mild therapeutic hypothermia (32-34°C) has been suggested to be useful in improving both survival rates and neurological outcome of these patients. Aim: The aim of the present study was to explore the relation between the method of mild therapeutic hypothermia, in ICU, with the traditional method (normothermia), for the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivals, after restoring spontaneous circulation. Material and method: As for the design, it was a retrospective study. The studied population consisted of 25 patients who suffered cardiac arrest, with initial cardiac rhythm ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT), who were successfully resuscitated and hospitalized after restoration of spontaneous circulation. During a 2-year period (2009-2011) these patients were treated with hypothermia (32-34°C) with ice packs or an endovascular cooling device. Results: he systematic cooling of survivals, between 32-34°C for a 24-hour period, increased the probability of survival (p=0.17) and improved neurological outcomes (p= 0.06), compared to normothermia. Complications, such as arrhythmias, bleeding and infections were treated by rewarming. Conclusions: Although there is a number of complications associated with hypothermia such as arrhythmias, bleeding disorders and infection, none seems to relate to adverse patient outcomes. Thalassanemia is one of the most common monogenic disorders in Mediterranean countries, S.Asia and Africa. The main clinical manifestations include severe anemia which requires blood transfusion, liver and spleen swelling bone diseases and skeletal complications, iron chelation and retardation of physical development. The annual incidence is 5-10 while in Greece 3000 persons suffer from thalassanemia. Aim:The aim of the present study was to investigate the knowledge of patients with thalassemia in major issues of their illness Methods-Material: The research was carried out (October 2007-May 2008) with the use of anonymous questionnaires addressed to thalassanemic patients (n=330) over 18 years of age who are being transfused in various hospitals in the Athens region. Results: 87% of the respondents declare that they suffer from β-thalassanemia, 54% are women and 50% are between 30-39 years of age, 88% of the respondents states that they are adequately informed regarding transfusion procedures, 81% reply the same regarding the nature of their disease and 76% also seem satisfied with information on the need to examine other members of the family. Percentages of satisfaction regarding the information provided are lower as far as the following issues are concerned: implications (67%), genetics of the disease (65%), side effects from medication (56%) and patients’ rights (49%). As far as information on even more specific issues is concerned, the replies which consider this information as inadequate range from 32-40%. Conclusions: According to the findings information is considered to be sufficient as far as practical and procedural matters are concerned, but it lacks behind as far as patients’ rights, information regarding new therapeutic methods and possibility of participation in research protocols are concerned. The respondents’ wish for better and broader information on all investigated issues is more than obvious. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The short-term absence of Nursing students from their studies is a phenomenon that has troubled teachers a lot. The lack of participation in courses is a widespread threat to education. Absences are often related to poor academic performance, unprofessional attitude and inadequate socialization. Purpose: The investigation of the reasons why students of Nursing Department of Technological Institute of Athens do not attend classes. Material-Method: The studied population consisted of 579 students of Nursing Institute of Athens. 65.6% (N = 380) were in the Nursing department A and 34.4% (N = 199) in department B. For data collection, which lasted 12 months, it was used a special designed questionnaire. For each year was distributed separate univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Data analysis was performed with the statistical package SPSS ver. 16. Results: The occupational status has an important role in attendance. It affects more those who do not attend classes, p <0.001. Students in first year of their studies were 1.154 times more likely to attend classes more weeks in a year compared to the others (B: -0.143, P: 0.001, OR: 0.867, 95%OR: 0.798-0.942) and 3.86 times more likely to criticize an inadequate professor in relation to the other (B: -1.350, P: 0.003, OR: 0.259, 95%OR: 0.106-0.635). The fourth year students were 2.29 times more likely to respond than others that the time courses were not helpful (Β: 0.832, P: 0.024, OR: 2.298, 95%OR: 1.117-4.728). Conclusions: The occupational status is the main reason for nursing students not to attend lectures. The main reasons of absence, concerning non-working students, from the lectures are the non-transmissibility of the teacher and the fact that he is not accessible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pain in the Elderly amounts to one of the most prominent parameters that affect deterioration in their quality of life. About 60-71% of community based elderly report presence of pain, and 33% of them report daily persistent pain. Published research results indicate that complementary therapies reinforce the analgesic effect of medication either directly by their analgesic action, or indirectly by reduction of tension and stress, endorphin production, increase of blood flow and mobility. The survey object was to investigate the degree of awareness among the elderly, of complementary therapies, particularly of those who experience pain and are 65 or over. Sample and methodology: The survey population consisted of 100 people - members of KAPI in Athens and Thessaloniki. Data collection was based on an interviewing schedule and questionnaire completion by two different groups of 50 people each. As far as methodology was concerned the sample was selected according to availability and willingness to participate. Results indicate the following: 66% of the total sample report that they would use some complementary therapy for pain relief. Another 72% of the total sample (i.e. 2/3), report that they require more information on complementary therapies. Conclusion: Elderly people are interested in complementary therapies as alternative methods of pain management. Furthermore, should they have access to more information on this subject they would use them more frequently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
