Background: The prevention of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) can be achieved through systematic surveillance and intervention through the implementation of care bundles. An integral component of the care bundles is the central line insertion and maintenance checklists. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to investigate the compliance rate of the nursing staff with the central line insertion and maintenance care checklists as well as the factors affecting it. Material and Methods: Search was performed on PubMed (April 05, 2021) with the keywords: "nurse*", "nursing staff", "compliance", "central line insertion checklist" and "central line maintenance checklist", without time limit for the publication of scientific papers. Keywords were searched in the title and abstract of the studies. Studies were excluded if they were not published in the English language, were conducted on animals, and were case studies, editorials, and letters to the editor. Results: Of the scientific papers retrieved, 5 were included in the systematic review. The compliance rate of nursing staff with central line insertion and maintenance checklists ranged from 8.4% to 74.3% and from 11.4% to 77.3%, respectively. Regarding the factors affecting the compliance of nursing staff with both types of checklists, these were the nurse-to-patient ratio and the number of beds of nursing wards. Conclusions: Compliance rates with the central line insertion and maintenance checklists are moderate and low. Interventions are required that will increase compliance rates leading to lower CLABSI rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Occupational therapy treatment in certain medical and health conditions has been consistently found to reduce health care costs and improving the quality of life of the patients. A rising strand of the literature underlines the need for socioeconomic evaluations in occupational therapy interventions. Aim: The present study is about the occupational therapy department of a Greek General Hospital, the one of Syros island. Materials and Methods: The paper has a two-fold research goal: to examine the economic costs and revenues of the occupational therapy department and to evaluate the health-related quality of life of the patients of the department, before and after the first lockdown in Greece due to COVID-19, that lead to a three-month shutdown of all occupational therapy sessions. Results: Regarding the economic evaluation part, there seems to be a downward trend in the department's expenditure, mainly due to the nationwide decrease in wages. However, there is noted a large discrepancy between costs and revenues of the department, due to the insufficient public reimbursement and the low pricing imposed on occupational therapy sessions. On the other hand, health-related quality of life scores of the patients treated, just before the lockdown (in February 2020), differentiate between age groups. Conclusions: For adult patients, there does not seem to be any significant differences in their health-related quality of life due to the disruption of their treatment. Still, for children-patients, a significant number of them seems to have lower health-related quality of life scores after the three-month disruption in their sessions. The results should be viewed with caution due to the limitations in the sample size and information. Still, due to the scarcity of studies in this area, we hope the study can provide some initial research insights on the research topics addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BULLYING , *MEDLINE , *NURSE practitioners , *ONLINE information services , *VIOLENCE in the workplace , *SYSTEMATIC reviews , *HOSPITAL nursing staff - Abstract
Introduction: The phenomenon of mobbing in hospitals is an important inhibitor both for the psychospiritual balance of clinical nurses and for the proper functioning of hospitals as organizations. Aim: The investigation of the frequency of mobbing in clinical nurses and its impact on them. Methods: Search was performed on PubMed on March 13, 2020 with the key-words: "mobbing" and "nurse*", without time limit for the publication of scientific papers. Studies were excluded if they were not published in English language, were conducted on animals and were case studies, editorials and letters to the editor. Results: Of the scientific papers retrieved, 14 were included in the systematic review. The prevalence of mobbing in clinical nurses ranged from 4.6% to 86.5%. This large variation is due to the characteristics of the health system of each country. Finally, the results of the studies showed that mobbing reduces the productivity of clinical nurses and the climate of cooperation and solidarity between them, increases anxiety, depression and stress levels, reduces the feeling of satisfaction and safety of the working environment and increases the number of absences from work. Conclusions: Mobbing is a common form of work-related violence experienced by clinical nurses. Hospital administrations are invited to acquire the knowledge to identify this phenomenon in the workplace in order to develop policies to prevent and address it. Introduction: The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can affect patients' quality of life (QOL). Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the association between exercise and QOL of patients with COPD following a respiratory rehabilitation program in organized centers of respiratory rehabilitation of hospital units. Material and Methods: A systematic review of papers published up until June 2018 was conducted. Search was performed on PubMed with the key-words: "COPD", "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease", "physical activity", "exercise", "quality of life" and "QOL" as well as on IATROTEK-online with the key-words: "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease", "COPD", "quality of life" and "exercise". The criteria for inclusion in this review were: the QOL assessment has been done with the Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) and the content of the studies concerns the evaluation of the QOL of COPD patients following respiratory rehabilitation programs in organized centers of respiratory rehabilitation of hospital units. Results: Only 9 of the scientific papers retrieved met the criteria for inclusion in this review. The exercise was found to affect the QOL of COPD patients positively. Although, the degree of improvement in both the overall score and the scores of the three subscales of the SGRQ was not the same in all studies but varied significantly depending on the type of exercise and the limitations of each study. Conclusions: The QOL of patients with COPD was improved after the integration of rehabilitation programs that were performed in specialized respiratory centers of hospital units. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health and societal emergency respiratory disease that is caused by SARS-CoV-2. A poor understanding of the disease among Healthcare Workers (HCWs) can result in delayed identification and treatment leading to rapid spread of infections. Aim: The investigation of the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of HCWs toward COVID-19. Material and Methods: Search was performed on PubMed for studies published from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020 with the key-words: "knowledge", "attitude», "practice", "COVID19", "healthcare workers" and "HCW", which were searched in the title and abstract of the studies. Studies were excluded if they were not published in English language, were conducted on animals and were case studies, editorials, and letters to the editor. Results: Of the scientific papers retrieved, 5 were included in the systematic review. Regarding the rate of knowledge of HCWs toward COVID-19, it ranged from 62.6 % to 89%. The rate of HCWs that had good practices and positive attitudes toward COVID-19 ranged from 74% to 89.7% and from 21% to 88.5%, respectively. The factors that positively affected (increase the rate) in statistically significant level the knowledge, attitudes and practices were the age of 40 years old and more, the higher level of education (possession of Master of Science Degree and/or Doctor of Philosophy), the medical profession and the more years of experience. Conclusions: Continuing professional education is advised among HCWs to improve knowledge of HCWs hence averting negative attitudes and promoting positive preventive and therapeutic practices. Introduction: The disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 infection since its outbreak in China in the end of 2019, turned into a pandemic after having reached over 7,834 confirmed cases and 170 deaths worldwide by the end of January 2020. Purpose: The purpose of the current article is to present how SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS (Middle East syndrome) and COVID-19 pandemics affected the mental health of different population subgroups and also to present the determinants of mental illness, in an attempt to understand their negative psychological effects. Material- Methodology: The methodology that was followed in this paper was the review of the international bibliography on the Pubmed, Scopus και Google Scholar on the subject of mental health during pandemics and the presentation of the wide range of psychosocial needs that emerged during the SARS, MERS and COVID-19 pandemics. Results: The conclusions derived from the first literature research on the mental health of different target groups during the COVID-19 pandemic are comparable to those that emerged during the previous two major pandemics. Therefore, the pandemic has demonstrated the necessity of timely mental health care by the immediate adoption of appropriate measures and the implementation of interventions that will be based on the different needs of the population. Conclusions: Although the Greek government took timely measures against the spread of the virus, published research efforts regarding the mental health outcomes within the Greek population, are still in their infancy. At this critical time, mental health assessment and evaluation should be a priority for health authorities in their way to managing psychological crises due to a pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are one of the most common nosocomial infections and are associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospitalization and increased healthcare costs. Aim: The aim of the present review was to investigate the impact of central line insertion and maintenance care checklists on CLABSIs in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and Hematology/Oncology Units. Material and Methods: Search was performed on PubMed with the key-words: "children", "hematology/oncology", "NICU", "PICU", "pediatric intensive care unit", "neonatal intensive care unit", "central line-associated bloodstream infections", "CLABSI","checklists", without time limit for the publication of scientific papers. Studies were excluded if they were not published in English language, were conducted on animals and were case studies, editorials and letters to the editor. Of the 11 studies that were included, 7 referred to NICUs, 2 to PICUs and the remaining 2 to hematology/oncology units. Results: CLABSI rate was reduced in all 11 studies. In NICUs, the highest reduction of CLABSI rate was 92%, in PICUs more than 50% and in hematology/oncology units the reduction was 28% and 64% respectively. Conclusions: Central line insertion and maintenance care checklists reduce CLABSIs, either as an independent intervention or as element of CLABSI bundle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Maternity is one of the biggest chapters in a woman's life. As beautiful as it might be, it comes with many responsibilities and obligations. Most mothers in order to respond to this new role in their life, start searching information on how to take care of their babies. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of asynchronous education (moodle) of first-time mothers regarding the care of their newborn. Material - Method: This research was done in a public maternity clinic, using 53 first-time mother participants who were educated about baby care material via tablet. The age of the participants was between 18 to 47 years old coming from different nationalities, background and religions. Part of the e-learning lesson included multiple quizzes which helped the study be more accurate. The collected data compared the awareness of the mothers before and after they were introduced to the e-learning material. In addition, 47 similar knowledge quizzes were collected from first-time mothers online. Results: The research showed a significant difference between the correct answers regarding the knowledge that the mothers had before studying the asynchronous lessons and after studying them. The median value of the correct answers before reading the lessons was determined at 51% while after reading the lessons it was equal to 90%. As a way of obtaining information about the arrival of their newborns, the participants declared the internet (46.25%) while the second place was occupied by information from books (31.25%). The most correct answers were gathered by the question about the proper bath of the baby (88%) and the fewest were the manipulations in case of drowning of the baby (3%). Conclusions: The data analysis showed that all participants had almost doubled up the awareness they had before introduced to the asynchronous education. The moodle platform can be used both outside of formal education and for a very diverse audience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The complexity of health care, such as the time pressure, life and death decisions, and the significant workload contribute to conflicts, while emotional intelligence is a skill that can contribute to the resolve of these conflicts Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the management of conflicts between health professionals and the role of Emotional Intelligence in them. Material-Method: A survey was conducted with the use of a self-report questionnaire on health professionals of the Nursing Unit. The final sample of the survey was 153 people out of 220 who worked in the structure in total, with a response rate of 70%. Scales weighted in the Greek Language were used to investigate conflicts and to assess Emotional Intelligence. The statistical analysis was performed with the statistical program S.P.S.S. 25. Results: Health professionals regardless of specialty believe that communication problems lead to moderate conflicts. No difference was found between the views of the specialties of the sample and the causes of conflicts related to job expectations, nor between the occupations of the health professionals in terms of conflict management strategies, with the exception of compromise. It is also not selected by the majority of the sample the claim of victory or the accepting the other's wish, while 40% of administrators choose to compromise, compared to the lower percentages of other occupational groups (p = 0.049). The analysis of the correlation between the Emotional Intelligence of health professionals and the causes of conflict showed that as the Emotional Intelligence of physicians and administrators increases, their belief that orders from more than one person cause conflicts decreases (r = -0.049, p and r = -0.561, p = 0.010). Also, as the Emotional Intelligence of doctors increases, so does the belief that the unfair distribution of resources leads to conflicts (r = 0.386, p = 0.035) while finally, as the SN of nurses increases, so does the satisfaction with their roles and tasks ( r = 0.395, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Conflicts in the hospital environment are a condition that cannot be easily eliminated due to the specificity and burden of the environment but also the multidimensional professional relationships between health professionals. However, a mean of conflicts resolving is Emotional Intelligence, which characterizes health professionals but must also be cultivated, through a framework of modern administration. ANTIPSYCHOTIC agents , *BLOOD diseases , *MEDLINE , *ONLINE information services , *SYSTEMATIC reviews - Abstract
Over half a century after the discovery of chlorpromazine and haloperidol, antipsychotic drugs showed a true evolutionary revolution. The knowledge of their adverse effects is of outmost importance as it may contribute to the prevention of unwanted sequelae, to the decrease of the duration and cost of hospitalization, it may improve the quality of life of patients, minimize the problems and maximize the therapeutic gain. Aim: The aim of this review was the presentation of the hematologic side-effects of antipsychotic drugs, and most particularly their frequency and association with the different classes of these drugs, their clinical picture and their pathophysiologic mechanisms. Material-method: This paper is a review of the literature (mainly articles from journals, PubMed, as well as books and monographs) of the period 1978-2012. Key-words used included antipsychotics, hematologic adverse effects, drug-induced adverse effects. Results: Antipsychotic-drug induced hematologic side-effects are not particularly highly prevalent, while many of them are found in case reports. For this reason they have not drawn much of attention. These hematologic dyscrasias may concern all the blood cell series as well as the coagulation mechanism. Excluded from this rule is the case of clozapine-induced agranulocytosis, which demands increased clinical vigilance. In fact, agranulocytosis was the reason why the drug was drawn away from circulation approximately 35 years ago. Conclusions: In any case the appearance of a hematologic disorder in a patient receiving antipsychotic medications should prompt careful evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent decades, interest in hospital administration has turned increasingly to the effective motivation of doctors. Purpose: The presentation of selected theories of motivation through literature review and their application in medical and hospital staff. Material and methods: The Greek and international bibliography has been reviewed, and in particular papers on the motivation theories of medical staff published during the last ten years via Pub Med and Science Direct, during the period 2008-2011. The keywords that were used are: motivation, doctor needs motivation and motivation theories, motivation and medical stuff. Results: According to the literature, the motivation of doctors is a complex issue. The financial incentives cannot by themselves stimulate physicians, incentives that have to do with the achieving of goals and the recognition in the workplace and the possibility of professional development are more realistic and feasible. The issue of incentives is important for individual achievements and for the management of medical staff. The application of modern theories of motivation is essential to maintaining a satisfied staff, which sets the basis for creating a robust health care delivery system. Conclusions: For an efficient use of medical resources is necessary to diagnose the needs and selection of appropriate techniques, which offer various theories of incentives which will motivate doctors increasing their performance and satisfaction from work.
