Isolation and characterization of fungal endophytes from various parts of epiphyte fern, Asplenium nidus was done. Thirteen fungal endophytes have been successfully isolated from A. nidus from which eight was from the leaf, three from midrib and two from the root. Macroscopic and microscopic identification revealed that the isolates was identified as Aspergillus fumigatus, A. terreus, A. niger, two isolates from genus Penicillium, one isolate each from the genus Phoma, Fusarium, Pestalotopsis and Drechslera. Four isolates were unable to be identified at the genus level. However they can be classified as members from Family Dematiaceae, Class Sphaeropsidales, sterile mycelium and phylum Deutromycota respectively. Screening for antibacterial activity of the fungal endophytes was also done. Only A. terreus, Phoma sp. and isolate of Phylum Deutromycota produced inhibition zones against the tested bacteria. The diversity of endophytes from A. nidus was shown in this study with some of the isolates having low antibacterial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
