Soil as an ecosystem is actively involved in the climate formation process. Therefore, it is important to assess soil quality indicators such as total carbon and CO2 emissions. Soil respiration shows carbon emission from soil into the atmosphere. This is a great indicator illustrating the biological activity of soil. The most effective CO2 emission can be noticed in the afternoon and may reach 0,201 g CO2 m-2h-1. Soil organic matter is considered to be its indicator of quality, which is one of the most important components of biosphere consistency and stability. Following the conducted study, a significant trend towards the content of total carbon in the layer of the surface (0–10 cm) soil was observed. Santrauka Dirvožemis, kaip ekosistema, aktyviai dalyvauja klimato formavimosi procesuose, todėl svarbu vertinti tokius dirvožemio kokybės rodiklius kaip bendroji anglis ir CO2 emisija. Dirvožemio kvėpavimas rodo anglies emisiją iš dirvožemio į atmosferą. Tai rodiklis, gerai iliustruojantis dirvožemio biologinį aktyvumą. Aktyviausia CO2 emisija – iki 0,201 g CO2 m–2h–1 esti popiečio valandomis. Dirvožemio organinių medžiagų kiekis laikomas dirvožemio kokybės rodikliu, vienu svarbiausių biosferos pastovumo ir stabilumo veiksnių. Atliekant tyrimą pastebėta ryški bendrosios anglies kiekių dominavimo paviršiniame (0–10 cm) dirvožemio sluoksnyje tendencija. Sewage dump is the main organic waste component accumulating in water treatment companies, and therefore the utilization of dump remains a burning issue. Fertilization is the most popular and cheapest way of using sewage dump a part of which is intended for agriculture in most European countries for composting purposes. Sewage dump or its compost are suitable for fertilizing the upper layers of the soil in cases the concentration of heavy metals is not greater than sanitarian standards can tolerate. The examinations were carried out using different waste dump rates from Vilnius water treatment facility in willow (Salix viminalis) grown cultivated fields. The analysis of the soil was executed after one and two years following the fertilization process. The obtained results indicate that waste dump is a valuable organic fertilizer which contains small amounts of heavy metals. Separate heavy metals migrate from sewage sludge compost to plants differently. It was noted that the concentration of heavy metals in willows was greater (except for Pb and Cd) than that in the soil. Pats pigiausias ir plačiausiai taikomas nuotekų dumblo utilizavimo būdas – naudojimas tręšti. Daugelis Europos šalių dalį dumblo, skirto žemės ūkiui, kompostuoja. Tik jeigu sunkiųjų metalų kiekiai, esantys komposte, nėra per dideli sanitariniu požiūriu, dumblu ar jo kompostu galima tręšti viršutinius dirvos sluoksnius. Tyrimai atlikti esant skirtingoms komposto normoms Vilniaus nuotekų dumblu tręštuose dirbamų laukų dirvožemiuose, kuriuose auginami žilvičiai (Salix viminalis). Dirvožemiai tirti pirmaisiais ir antraisiais metais po patręšimo nuotekų dumblo kompostu. Gauti duomenys rodo, kad nuotekų dumblo kompostas yra kokybiška organinė trąša, turinti nedideles sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijas. Atskiri sunkieji metalai, sukaupti nuotekų dumblo komposte, į augalą migruoja skirtingai, daugelio jų koncentracija didesnė žilvičiuose nei dirvožemyje (išskyrus Pb ir Cd).
