Objective This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) and its associated risk factors among pregnant Korean women, as UI significantly impacts their quality of life. Methods A cross-sectional study involving singleton pregnant women was conducted between April and December 2023. Data were collected using a questionnaire assessing demographic information and UI symptoms. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-UI short form was used to diagnose UI. Results A total of 824 pregnant women from three centers participated, with an overall prenatal UI prevalence of 40.2% (331/824). Stress UI was most common (77.1%), followed by mixed UI (16.9%), and urgency UI (6.0%). Risk factors for UI included prior delivery mode, specifically vaginal delivery (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 5.61; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.40–22.50; P=0.015) and combined vaginal and cesarean delivery (aOR, 23.14; 95% CI, 1.77–302.74; P=0.017). During nationwide Fantimicrobial surveillance (Korea Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System [Kor-GLASS]), the recent emergence of non-oxacillinase (OXA)-23 production by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates was noted. In this study, we evaluated resistance mechanisms other than OXA-23 production to elucidate the shift in considerable CRAB clones. The presence of OXA carbapenemase genes, such as blaOXA-23, blaOXA-24, blaOXA-58, and blaOXA-51-ISAba1, was determined by PCR. Other carbapenemase genes, such as blaIMP, blaVIM, blaNDM, blaKPC, blaGES, and blaOXA-48 , were determined using sequencing. Strains lacking carbapenemase genes were subjected to whole genome sequencing, and resistance genes were analyzed using ResFinder. Four CRAB strains were collected through a Kor-GLASS study in 2022, in which OXA-23 production was not identified. The carbapenemase genotypes of the four CRAB strains lacking blaOXA-23 were blaOXA-51-ISAba1, blaOXA-66/ACD25, blaOXA-182, and blaNDM-1. To the best of our knowledge, this is the f irst study to identify CRAB producing New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-1 in Korea. In conclusion, domestic CRAB resistance mechanisms may undergo subtle changes. Continuous observations are required to monitor the emergence of new clones.

Background: This study aims to analyze the risk factors for urinary tract infection (UTI) by cefotaxime-resistant Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae, using data from the National Health Insurance Data Sharing Service. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted to analyze the risk factors during 11 years (2010–2020). Study groups were selected based on the laboratory data of the hospital, which comprised 3,638 and 877 cases of cefotaxime-resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively. Controls comprised 8,994 and 1,573 cases of cefotaxime-nonresistant (intermediate or susceptible) E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively. Clinical and socioeconomical features were obtained from the National Health Insurance service data. Results: In a multivariate analysis of risk factors for UTI by cefotaxime-resistant E. coli, the odds ratio (OR) of the male sex was 1.335 (95% confidence interval, 1.204–1.480), age 0–9 years was 1.794 (1.468–2.191), chronic renal disease was 1.227 (1.062–1.417), and hemodialysis was 1.685 (1.255–2.262). Moreover, the ORs of L-tube, central venous pressure catheter, and Foley catheter use were 1.204 (1.047–1.385), 1.332 (1.156–1.534), and 1.473 (1.316–1.649), respectively; the OR of previous antimicrobial use was 1.103 (1.009–1.206) and that of healthcare facility use was 1.782 (1.576–2.014). In a multivariate analysis of risk factors for UTI by cefotaxime-resistant K. pneumoniae, OR of the male sex was 1.460 (1.199–1.778), liver disease was 1.295 (1.037–1.617), and hemodialysis was 2.046 (1.263–3.315). The ORs of L-tube and Foley catheter use were 2.329 (1.861–2.915) and 1.793 (1.431–2.246), respectively, and the OR of the healthcare facility use was 1.545 (1.161–2.056). Conclusion: In this study, the risk factors for UTI caused by cefotaxime-resistant E. coli or K. pneumoniae were analyzed based on the data of a specific healthcare facility linked to the National Health Insurance system. We suggest that it is a simple and effective way to elucidate risk factors of infections caused by major antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

Background: The application of genotypic antimicrobial sensitivity tests (ASTs) is dependent on the reliability of the predictions of phenotypic resistance. In this study, routine AST results and the presence of corresponding antimicrobial resistance genes were compared. Methods: Eighty-four extended-spectrum-β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli isolates from poultry-related samples were included in the study. The disk diffusion method was used to test for susceptibility to antimicrobial compounds, except colistin susceptibility, which was tested using the agar dilution method. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed using a NextSeq 550 instrument (Illumina, USA). Antimicrobial resistance genes were detected using ResFinder 4.1. Results: Concordance rates between the genotype and phenotype ranged from 35.7% (ciprofloxacin) to 96.4% (tetracycline). The presence of tet was a good predictor of phenotypic resistance. Conclusion: The genotype was a good predictor of tetracycline phenotypic resistance, but there was a gap in the prediction of phenotypic ASTs for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and ciprofloxacin. We concluded that WGS-based genotypic ASTs are inadequate to replace routine phenotypic ASTs.

Background: We compared the antimicrobial resistance rates (AMRs) of major glucose non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, under different clinical conditions. The purpose of the study was to provide useful background data to set up infection control strategies for infection-vulnerable patients. Methods: The AMRs of blood isolates were compared in various clinical conditions, using data from the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System in Korea. Results: A. baumannii blood isolates from patients with healthcare-associated infections, inpatients, or intensive care unit (ICU)-admitted patients consistently exhibited higher AMRs to most antimicrobials, except minocycline, tigecycline, and colistin, compared with those from patients with community-acquired infections, outpatients, or non-ICU-admitted patients, respectively. P. aeruginosa blood isolates from patients with healthcare-associated infections showed higher AMRs to most antimicrobials, except ceftazidime and aztreonam, compared with those from patients with community-acquired infections, but not compared to those from inpatients or ICU-admitted patients. Conclusion: Higher AMRs were associated with A. baumannii bloodstream infections under various clinical conditions, such as healthcare-associated infections and infections in inpatients and ICU-admitted patients. Considering the high AMRs and the limited number of treatment options of A. baumannii, vigorous efforts should be used to prevent the spreading of A. baumannii infections in patients with vulnerable conditions.

Objective The external cephalic version (ECV) has been shown to lower the likelihood of cesarean section requirements among pregnant women with breech presentations. In the current study, we investigated the effectiveness and safety of ritodrine as a tocolytic for ECV. Methods A total of 407 pregnant women with breech presentations, who had no contraindications for ECV, were enrolled in this study. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to assess the impact of ritodrine use on the safety and efficacy of ECV. Results The overall success rate was 67.6%, and ritodrine use was associated with significantly higher odds of successful ECV after adjusting for confounders. Moreover, using ritodrine did not increase the risk of adverse effects, including temporary changes in fetal heart rate, need for elective or emergency cesarean section due to fetal distress during ECV, low Apgar scores, and perinatal mortality. Conclusion Our results suggest that using ritodrine as a tocolytic during ECV may increase the likelihood of ECV success and may not increase adverse perinatal outcomes.

Background: The incidence of community-associated (CA) Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has increased in Korea. In this study, we evaluated CA-CDI risk factors in terms of clinical features and ribotype considering its region-specific molecular epidemiology. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed on two groups of CDI patients: 127 subjects with CA-CDI and 265 subjects with healthcare-associated (HA)-CDI. Risk factors for CA-CDI were evaluated in terms of clinical and microbiological features such as toxin type and ribotype. Results: A comparison of the two groups of CDI patients revealed that inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever were more closely associated with CA-CDI. The toxin types and ribotypes of C. difficile were similar between the two groups. After adjusting for variables, no risk factors were identified for CA-CDI compared with HA-CDI. Conclusion: Specific risk factors for CA-CDI were not identified in this study.

Background: Recently, crpP enzymes have been described as a novel cause of ciprofloxacin resistance. The crpP gene encodes a novel protein that specifically confers resistance to ciprofloxacin through an adenosine triphosphate-dependent mechanism that phosphorylates the antimicrobial. In this study, the current prevalence of the crpP gene in carbapenemase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa blood isolates was evaluated. Methods: During the study of the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System in Korea, 22 blood isolates of carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa were collected from nine general hospitals and two nursing homes in the year 2020. Resistance genes and phylogenic trees were analyzed with the whole genome sequencing data. Results: A total of 11 P. aeruginosa blood isolates coharbored the crpP and carbapenemase genes (nine IMP-6 producers and two GES-5-producers). Nine NDM-1-producers coharbored aac(6′)-Ib-cr and qnrVC1. One GES-9-producer also carried aac(6′)-Ib-cr, and one NDM-1-producer also carried qnrVC1. The phylogenic tree showed no epidemiologic link among the 22 carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa isolates. Conclusion: This is the first report on the current prevalence of the crpP gene in carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa blood isolates in Korea.

Background: There has been a marked increase in the mortality rate associated with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) globally since 2003, with the emergence of binary toxinproducing ribotype 027 strains. However, the molecular epidemiology of C. difficile shows regional differences and ribotype 027 is not common in Korea. In this study, the risk factors for severe CDI were evaluated, while considering the region-specific molecular epidemiology. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed. Cases (n = 149) included patients with severe CDI or severe complicated CDI. Controls (n = 155) consisted of patients with nonsevere CDI. Results: Advanced age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.017, P = 0.0358), a history of chemotherapy (OR = 2.695, P = 0.0464), and ribotype 002 (OR = 3.406, P = 0.0231) were statistically significant factors associated with severe CDI in a multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Ribotype 002 was found to be a significant risk factor for severe CDI in this study. Therefore, the surveillance of C. difficile ribotypes is recommended to monitor the spread of high-risk clones.

Background Prophylactic central neck dissection (CND) in clinically node-negative (cN0) papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits of prophylactic ipsilateral CND compared with bilateral CND in total thyroidectomy for cN0 unilateral PTC. Methods We retrospectively enrolled 174 patients who underwent total thyroidectomies with prophylactic CND for cN0 unilateral PTC between January 2009 and May 2010. The prophylactic CND patients were divided into group 1, the ipsilateral CND group (n=74), and group 2, the bilateral CND group (n=100). The incidence of central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) and postoperative complications, such as hypoparathyroidism, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and recurrence were assessed. Results CLNM was found in 22 (29.8%) in group 1 and 69 (69%) in group 2. The incidence of postoperative severe hypocalcemia less than 7.0 was also significantly different (six patients [8.1%] in group 1 and 23 [23%] in group 2; p=0.009). Permanent hypoparathyroidism was significantly more frequent in group 2 (4.1% vs. 19%; p=0.005). However, the incidence of transient hypoparathyroidism, recurrence, and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was not significantly different. Conclusion Prophylactic ipsilateral CND has advantage not only to reduce incidence of some complications but also to have similar recurrence rate compared with bilateral CND. We suggest that prophylactic ipsilateral CND may be safe and effective for selected patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for cN0 unilateral PTC.

Ovarian pregnancies comprise approximately 3% of ectopic pregnancies. Moreover, ovarian pregnancies in the second trimester are extremely rare. We herein present a case of ruptured ovarian pregnancy in the second trimester. A 26-year-old Asian woman presented to our hospital complaining of an abrupt mental change. She was pregnant; however, she had not been receiving antenatal care. Her initial vital signs were unstable, and pelvic ultrasound revealed pelvic fluid collection. We analyzed the hemoperitoneum and performed exploratory laparotomy. When her abdomen was opened, we observed that her right ovary was ruptured. Placental cord insertion originated from the ovary, and a fetus was found in the pelvic cavity. The ovarian pregnancy was detected in a delayed state. Pregnant women require appropriate antenatal care, and pelvic ultrasound should be performed in the second trimester to ensure that the fetus is in the intrauterine cavity.

16S rRNA gene-targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) can detect microorganisms in a comprehensive reference database. To date, NGS has been successfully applied to samples such as urine, blood, and synovial fluid. However, there is no data for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) fluid. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of microbiome analysis of CAPD fluids for the diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis.We included 21 patients with high suspicion of CAPD peritonitis. Routine CAPD fluid culture was performed using a pellet of 50 mL CAPD fluid onto the chocolate and blood agar for two days, and thioglycollate broth for one week. 16S rRNA gene-targeted NGS of pellets, stored at -70°C was performed with MiSeq (Illumina, USA). Many colonized or pathogenic bacteria were detected from CAPD fluids using NGS and the microbiomes were composed of 1 to 29 genera with a cut-off 1.0. Compared to the culture results, NGS detected the same pathogens in 6 of 18 valid results (three samples failed with low read count). Additionally, using NGS, anaerobes such as Bacteroides spp. and Prevotella spp. were detected in six patients. In two of five samples in which no bacterial growth was detected, possible pathogens were detected by NGS.To our knowledge, this is the first report about the application of 16S rRNA gene-targeted NGS for diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis. Etiology of culture-negative CAPD peritonitis can be better defined in NGS. Furthermore, it also helped the detection of anaerobic bacteria.

The weather has well-documented effects on infectious disease and reports suggest that summer peaks in the incidences of gram-negative bacterial infections among hospitalized patients. We evaluated how season and temperature changes affect bloodstream infection (BSI) incidences of major pathogens to understand BSI trends with an emphasis on acquisition sites. Incidence rates of BSIs by Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were retrospectively analyzed from blood cultures during 2008–2016 at a university hospital in Seoul, Korea according to the acquisition sites. Warm months (June–September) had an average temperature of ≥20 °C and cold months (December–February) had an average temperature of ≤5 °C. We analyzed 18,047 cases, where 43% were with community-onset BSI. E. coli (N = 5,365) was the most common pathogen, followed by Enterococcus spp. (N = 3,980), S. aureus (N = 3,075), K. pneumoniae (N = 3,043), Acinetobacter spp. (N = 1,657), and P. aeruginosa (N = 927). The incidence of hospital-acquired BSI by Enterococcus spp. was weakly correlated with temperature, and the median incidence was higher during cold months. The incidence of community-onset BSI by E. coli was higher in warm months and was weakly correlated with temperature. We found seasonal or temperature-associated variation in some species-associated BSIs. This could be a useful information for enhancing infection control and public health policies by taking season or climate into consideration.

Background: Escherichia coli and Klebsiellapneumoniae clinical isolates producing CTX-M extendedspectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) were assessed for antimicrobial resistance phenotypes varied by group of enzymes.Methods: A total of 1,338 blood isolates, including 959 E. coli and 379 K.pneumoniae, were studied. All the strains were collected between January and July 2017 from eight general hospitals in South Korea. The species were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined by disk diffusion methods and ESBL phenotypes by double-disk synergy tests using disks containing cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefepime, aztreonam, and clavulanic acid (CA). The genes for β-lactamases were identified by PCR and sequencing.Results: Of total microbes, 31.6% (303/959) E. coli and 24.0% (91/379) K.pneumoniae were resistant to cefotaxime and 28.1% (269/959) E. coli and 20.1% (76/379) K.pneumoniae were CTX-M-type ESBL producers. Among the detected CTX-M ESBLs, 58.0% (156/269) in E. coli and 86.8% (66/76) in K. pneumoniae belonged to group 1, 46.8% (126/269) in E. coli and 14.5% (11/76) in K.pneumoniae were group 9. Ten E. coli and one K.pneumoniae isolates co-produced both groups of CTX-M ESBL. The group 1 CTX-M producers had a higher level of resistance to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefepime, and aztreonam and exhibited stronger synergistic activities when combined with CA compared to group 9.Conclusion: ESBL phenotypes differ by CTX-M ESBL group and phenotype testing with drugs including 4th generation cephalosporins and monobactams is critical for screening CTX-M-producers with better sensitivity. Secretory carcinoma of the salivary gland (SC) is a newly introduced rare salivary gland tumor that shares histological, immunohistochemical, and genetic characteristics with secretory carcinoma of the breast. Here, we report the cytologic features of two cases of SC confirmed by surgical resection. In these two cases, SC was incidentally detected in a 64-year-old female and a 56-yearold male. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed nests of tumor cells with a papillary or glandular structure floating in mucinous secretions. The tumor cells demonstrated uniform, round, smooth nuclear contours and distinct nucleoli. Multiple characteristic cytoplasmic vacuoles were revealed. Singly scattered tumor cells frequently showed variable sized cytoplasmic vacuoles. The cytopathologic diagnosis of SC should be considered when characteristic cytological findings are revealed. Further immunohistochemistry and gene analyses are helpful to diagnose SC.

Background Intratumoral fibrosis (ITF) is a frequent histologic finding in solid organ tumors. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a highly vascularized tumor with different shapes and degrees of ITF and inflammation. ITF is a poor prognostic factor, especially in breast cancer, and is related to intratumoral necrosis (ITN) and intratumoral inflammation (ITI). However, the significance of ITF in RCC has not been fully studied. In this study, we evaluate the relationships between ITF and other clinicopathologic parameters associated with RCC prognosis. Methods ITF was evaluated in 204 clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) specimens according to presence and grade of fibrosis, degree of ITI, and presence of ITN. Lysyl oxidase (LOX) expression in tumor cells was also evaluated with clinicopathologic parameters. Results Among 204 CCRCC cases, 167 (81.7%) showed ITF, 71 (34.8%) showed ITI, 35 (17.2%) showed ITN, and 111 (54.4%) showed LOX expression. ITF correlated with Fuhrman nuclear grade (p = .046), lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (p = .027), and ITN (p = .036). Patients with ITF had a poor five-year overall survival rate (p = .104). Conclusions ITF is related to other poor prognostic factors in CCRCC, such as Fuhrman nuclear grade, ITN, and LVI, but ITF itself had no significant correlation with prognosis of CCRCC.

Background: In the present study, the prevalence and risk factors for acquisition of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in intensive care unit (ICU) settings without outbreak in the situation of widespread sequence type (ST) 131 ESBL-producing E. coli in a Korean community was investigated.Methods: Consecutive and prospective screening of ESBL-producing E. coli colonization was performed in all patients admitted to surgical or medical ICUs within 48 hours for two months. ESBL genotype was determined based on PCR and sequencing. PCR for O16-ST131/O25-ST131 was performed for all ESBL producers. Clinical information was obtained from a review of electronic medical record to determine the risk factors for ESBL-producing E. coli colonization.Results: The colonization rate of ESBL-producing E. coli at ICU admission was 14.9% (42/281). CTX-M-15 (N=15), CTX-M-14 (N=12), and CTX-M-27 (N=10) were commonly detected using PCR of ESBL genes. Approximately half (45.2%, 19/42) of ESBL producers were ST131 clone with 14 ST131-O25 and 5 ST131- O16. Background An automatic alarm system was developed was developed for unexpected vital sign instability in admitted patients to reduce staffing needs and costs related to rapid response teams. This was a pilot study of the automatic alarm system, the medical emergency system (MES), and the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the MES before expanding this system to all departments. Methods This retrospective, observational study compared the performance of patients admitted to the pulmonary department at a single center using patient data from three 3-month periods (before implementation of the MES, December 2013-February 2014; after implementation of the MES, December 2014-February 2015 and December 2015-February 2016). Results A total of 571 patients were admitted to the pulmonary department during the three observation periods. During this pilot study, the MES automatically issued 568 alarms for 415 admitted patients. There was no significant difference in the rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before and after application of the MES. The mortality rate also did not change. However, it appeared that CPR was prevented in four patients admitted from the general ward to the intensive care unit (ICU) during MES implementation. The median length of hospital stay and median length of ICU stay were not significantly different before and after MES implementation. Conclusions Although we did not find a significant improvement in outcomes upon MES implementation, the CPR rate and mortality rate did not increase despite increased comorbidities. This was a small pilot study and, based on these results, we believe that the MES may have significant effects in longer-term and larger-scale studies.

Objective Isotretinoin should not be used during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. Most pregnant women exposed to isotretinoin choose voluntary pregnancy termination due to concerns about birth defects. However, birth outcome data supporting the termination of pregnancy are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate pregnancy and neonatal outcomes after periconception exposure to isotretinoin. Methods This was a prospective cohort study. We evaluated pregnancy and neonatal outcomes after exposure to isotretinoin in 151 pregnant women. Among 1,026 callers at the Korean Teratology Information Service from 2001 to 2017 exposed to isotretinoin during the periconception period, 151 pregnant women who received counseling on teratogenic risk after visiting the clinic were included. Results Among the 151 participants who visited the clinic, only 42 were evaluated using ultrasonography until approximately 20 weeks of gestation. Ultimately, 23 patients were included in the study. The average gestation period during the last exposure to the drug was 2 weeks, and the average daily exposure dose was 12 mg. There were two cases of major birth defects in the exposure group. Spontaneous abortion rates were 17.7% and 8.7% in the exposure and non-exposure groups, respectively (P=0.035). There was no significant difference between the exposure and non-exposure groups in terms of pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Conclusion There was no significant difference in pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, including birth defects, between the exposure and non-exposure groups. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to validate our findings.

Objective Isotretinoin is among the most notorious human teratogens, documented originally as causing up to 30% of malformations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the rates of major malformation (MM) among isotretinoin-exposed pregnant women over the years through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Eligible studies were searched and identified using various databases. Single-arm meta-analysis and meta-analysis of odd ratios among controlled studies were performed using Review Manager version 5.3. Results Ten eligible studies that combined 2,783 isotretinoin-exposed women were included in our study. The rate of MM weighted for the sample size was 15%. Three studies that included an unexposed comparison group were eligible for the meta-analysis. The pooled odds ratio of MM for isotretinoin-exposed women was 3.76. After 2006, the pooled odds ratio of MM for isotretinoin exposure was significantly lower at 1.04. Conclusion The current rate of MM in isotretinoin-exposed women was substantially lower after 2006.

Powdery mildew is a common and serious disease of the Cucurbitaceae including cucumber (Cucumis sativus) in most areas of the world. To identify causal agents of the powdery mildew and their physiological race(s), we collected cucumber leaves displaying typical symptoms of powdery mildew from different locations in Korea. Based on morphological and molecular characteristics, all powdery mildew isolates were identified as an obligate biotrophic fungal pathogen, Podosphaera xanthii. After inoculation at melon (Cucumis melo) differentials to identify the fungal race(s), P. xanthii isolate MI180427 and IC190611 were identified as race 1 which has been repeatedly reported as dominant race in Korea. However, another isolate SE180328 produced different disease response in the tested differentials, being identified as race 2 which has not been reported in Korea. To confirm the race of SE180328, we inoculated additional melon differentials and determined the isolate as race 2F that is the prevalent race of powdery mildew in Beijing, China. Report of this new race 2F in Korea will be helpful for future breeding programs to develop resistant varieties to this race.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify risk factors of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) and evaluate the efficacy of catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) for preventing the development of PTS in patients with lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Materials and Methods: From 2005 January to 2013 December, 139 limbs of 126 patients were included in this study who had the first episode of proximal DVT at the affected limb and who had visited our out-patient clinic. CDT was performed on 55 limbs (39.6%). We achieved complete recanalization in 39 limbs (70.9%) and partial recanalization (residual thrombus 0.05). Conclusion: We suggest that CDT is not effective in preventing PTS, while higher BMI and longer thrombotic burden are associated with the development of PTS in patients with DVT.
