Background: On September 25, 2023, the law requiring the mandatory installation and operation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in the operating room went into effect. In this study, doctors' perceptions of the law were re-examined on September 23, 2023 (just prior to the law's enforcement), following a survey conducted on July 21, 2021 (before the re-examination of the bill). This study aimed to confirm doctors' perceptions of the infringement of fundamental rights of this law, the collapse of essential medical services due to the avoidance of surgery, and other concerns and priority solutions ahead of the law's enforcement. Methods: The survey was conducted from 8 to 18 September, 2023, by the Korean Medical Association Doctor Survey; a total of 1,267 doctors responded to the survey. Results: Out of 1,267 respondents, 1,156 (91.2%) said "yes," and 111 (8.8%) said "no" to issue concerning constitutional violations of fundamental rights--such as the freedom of medical personnel to practice their profession--and moral rights. A total of 1,149 (90.7%) respondents agreed with the concern regarding the collapse of essential medical care due to the avoidance of surgeons. Conclusion: Sufficient guidance should be provided, along with guidelines that provide explicit standards for the installation and operation of the CCTV systems, along with safety management measures. Medical disputes and the heavy legal responsibility of medical personnel are the main reasons as to why essential medical care collapses, given the avoidance of surgery. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the impact of nursing organizational culture and nursing practice environment on generational conflict in organization among hospital nurses. Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional design. The participants consisted of 214 nurses working at two tertiary general hospitals, which were located in B city. Data were collected from January 15 to January 31, 2022, using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis using IBM/SPSS 28.0 for Windows. Results: The mean generational conflict in organization was 2.60±0.74 points on a 5-point scale. Multiple regression indicated that the factors influencing generational conflict in organization included relation-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=-.29, p<.001), hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=-.29, p<.001), hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture (β=.17, p=.006) and clinical career, and these variables explained 23.0% of generational conflict in organization. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that it is necessary to improve relation-oriented nursing organizational culture and avoid hierarch-oriented nursing organizational culture to decrease generational conflict in organization. Purpose: This study investigated the difficulties in end-of-life care and end-of-life care competency in nurses who take care of cancer patients. Methods: In the mixed method, a structured questionnaire on end-of-life care stress and competency was conducted on 115 nurses caring for cancer patients, and 19 were interviewed for qualitative research. For the collected quantitative data, descriptive statistics were used. For the qualitative study, the contents of the interview were summarized and systematized using the content analysis method to derive the main themes. Results: The mean end-of-life care stress was 4.08 points (out of 5) and the mean end-of-life care competency was 3.43 points (out of 5). Four themes and 11 sub-themes for the difficulties in end-of-life care were identified, and the four themes are as follows: (1) regret over limited end-of-life nursing, (2) different aspects of persistent emotional distress, (3) overloaded duty at the end-of-life (4) conflicts encountered in decision-making for life-sustaining treatment. Four themes and eight sub-themes for end-of-life care competency were identified, and the four themes are as follows: (1) empathy and listening skills, (2) communication skills, (3) clinical nursing experience and education, (4) clinical nursing competency. Conclusion: It was confirmed that nurses caring for cancer patients had a high level of end-of-life care stress, and it is necessary to develop a program to reduce difficulties in end-of-life care and increase end-of-life care competency. Purpose: This study aimed to distinguish and describe the types of perceptions of do not resuscitate (DNR) proxy decisions among families of elderly patients in a long-term care facility. Methods: This exploratory study applied Q-methodology, which focuses on individual subjectivity. Thirty-four Q-statements were selected from 130 Q-populations formed based on the results of in-depth interviews and literature reviews. The P-samples were 34 families of elderly patients in a long-term care hospital in Busan, Korea. They categorized the Q-statements using a 9-point scale. Using the PC-QUANL program, factor analysis was performed with the P-samples along an axis. Results: The families' perceptions of the DNR proxy decision were categorized into three types. Type I, rational acceptance, valued consensus among family members based on comprehensive support from medical staff. Type II, psychological burden, involved hesitance in making a DNR proxy decision because of negative emotions and psychological conflict. Type III, discreet decisions, valued the patients' right to self-determination and desire for a legitimate proxy decision. Type I included 18 participants, which was the most common type, and types II and III each included eight participants. Conclusion: Families' perceptions of DNR proxy decisions vary, requiring tailored care and intervention. We suggest developing and providing interventions that may psychologically support families. The separation-individuation theory of Margaret S. Mahler and her colleagues is a creative approach to understanding the emotional development of a baby. Recent neurobiological studies and infant research have necessitated modification of some of Mahler’s work, but it still forms the basis for understanding the emotional development of infants. Conflicts can arise between the baby’s natural temperament and the mother’s parenting, which are later internalized into the child’s intrapsychic conflicts. Through the child’s interaction with the environment, these conflicts help form his or her individual personality and psychopathology. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for suicidal ideation according to gender of old-old adults in South Korea. Methods: Data were collected from the 2017 Living Profiles of Older People Survey, and participants were 4214 older adults (aged 75 years and above). Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 21.0 for Windows. Differences in suicidal ideation by gender were identified using the χ² test or independent t-test, with multi-variate logistic regression analyses conducted to determine the factors associated with suicidal ideation by gender. Results: Among old-old adult participant, the prevalence of suicidal ideation in men and women were 5.4% and 6.7%, respectively. The significant predictive factors for suicidal ideation in men were the following: living alone, frequency of contact with children and friends etc., experience of discrimination, conflict with children, self-blame, anxiety, perceived health, number of chronic diseases, and diagnosed depression. The significant predictive factors for suicidal ideation in women were the following: frequency of contact with children, experience of discrimination, experience of abuse, conflict with children, anxiety, number of chronic diseases, perceived economic status, and diagnosed depression. Conclusion: The study revealed differences in factors associated with suicidal ideation according to gender among old-old adults. These findings suggested that different approaches and strategies for suicidal prevention programs should therefore be considered according to gender in this population age group. Purpose: This study was done to analyze effects of leader-member exchange as perceived by nurses who returned to work after parental leave: conflict between work and family via job stress. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was adopted and data were collected from 140 nurses. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program (descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis). Results: Mean scores were 3.44±0.64 out of 5 for leader-member exchange, 3.45±0.59 out of 5 for job stress, and 2.82±0.80 out of 5 for conflict between work and family. The leader-member exchange had negative correlations with job stress (r=-.31, p=.003) and conflict between work and family (r=-.36, p<.001). The leader-member exchange had direct impacts on conflict between work and family (β=-.26, p=.002) and indirect via job stress (β=.35, p<.001). Job stress had partial mediating effects on relations between leader-member exchange and conflict between work and family (Z=-3.00, p<.001). The leader-member exchange and job stress explained 41% of the conflict between work and family. Purpose: The present research was done to examine the fundamental significance and structure of conflict experience of nurses in hospital nursing organizations. Methods: This qualitative research was conducted by analyzing data collected through in-depth interviews based on Colaizzi's (1978) method of analysis, one of the phenomenological methods of analysis. Results: Statements from the 12 study participants demonstrate two key topics "accumulation of conflicts" and "manifestation of new conflicts" as well as seven sub-topics including "being forced to comply", "Lack of respect and consideration", "unsatisfactory conflict management by the leaders", "continuous and overwhelming vicious cycle", "prevalence of self-defensive egotism", "difficult to accept differences", and "incapable of responding to the structural changes of nursing workforce". Conclusion: Resolving the dysfunctional conflicts in hospital nursing organizations requires not only improvement in the organizational culture of individuals and nursing organizations, but also legal and institutional measures in addition to new attempts to integrate education and research findings from relevant fields of studies. Purpose : This study examined the factors influencing posttraumatic and conflict management styles for nursing performance in intensive care units (ICUs). Methods : In this study, 250 nurses from eight general hospitals in three cities participated. Structured self-report questionnaires were used to collect data on posttraumatic, conflict management styles, and nursing performance. Finally, the data were analyzed by SAS 9.3 program. Results : The mean of total sum scores was 31.29, and the high risk of posttraumatic symptoms was 61.2%. It was noted that nursing performance is significantly correlated with collaboration, compromise, accommodation styles, and intrusion. Collaboration styles (β=0.39, p<.001) and hyperarousal (β=-0.22, p=.050), ICU experience below 1 year (β=-0.21, p=.027) and that of 5-10 years (β=-0.19, p= .049), and compromise style (β=0.16, p=.049) were found to be the factors influencing nursing performance with 35.9% explanatory power value of regression model. Conclusions : The results of the study reveal that conflict management styles, hyperarousal, and ICU experience are factors predicting the successful performance of ICUs. Purpose: This aim of this phenomenological study was to describe and understand the experience of spiritual conflict in hospice nurses by identifying the meanings and structures of the experience. Methods: Participants were 12 nurses working for one year or more at hospice units of general hospitals in a metropolitan city and experiencing of spiritual conflict as hospice nurses. Over six months data were collected using individual in-depth interviews and analyzed with the method suggested by Colaizzi. Results: The experience of spiritual conflict in participants was organized into three categories, six theme-clusters, and 13 themes. The participants felt existential anxiety on death and a fear of death which is out of human control and skepticism for real facts of human beings facing death. They also experienced agitation of fundamental beliefs about life with agitation of the philosophy of life guiding themselves and mental distress due to fundamental questions that are difficult to answer. Also they had distress about poor spiritual care with guilty feelings from neglecting patients' spiritual needs and difficulties in spiritual care due to lack of practical competencies. Conclusion: Findings indicate the experience of spiritual conflict in hospice nurses is mainly associated with frequent experience of death in hospice patients. The experience of spiritual conflict consisted of existential anxiety, agitation of fundamental beliefs and distress over poor spiritual care. So, programs to help relieve anxiety, agitation and distress are necessary to prevent spiritual conflict and then spiritual burnout in hospice nurses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify and explain the essences and structures of maternal conflicts in Vietnamese married immigrant women in Korea. Methods: A phenomenological methodology was used for the study. Eleven Vietnamese married immigrant women participated in the study. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: Four categories, 10 clusters and 26 themes emerged from the data for the experience in maternal conflicts of Vietnamese married immigrant women. The four categories were ‘An unprepared young motherhood in another culture’, ‘Feeling left out of the mother’s place along the bands of Nap tai tradition’, ‘My image is like not-being able to stand alone/be independent’ and ‘Finding hope in motherhood despite of conflicts and stigmas’. Conclusion: Vietnamese married immigrant women experienced not only the negative aspects but also sublimation of maternal conflicts. Based on the results, health professionals need to develop effective nursing interventions toward a positive maternal identity and approach with interculturalism for the Vietnamese married immigrant women in Korea. Purpose: This study was to investigate the influence of male nurses' gender role conflict and job satisfaction on their organizational commitment. Methods: Data were collected through a mixed method design using structured questionnaires (N=162) and a sequential qualitative interviews (N=8) from 2nd October, 2012 to 7th February, 2013. Data analysis included t-test, ANOVA, regression with SPSS/WIN 19.0 program and a qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Factors affecting participants' organizational commitment were job satisfaction and marital status which accounted for 36.2% of the total variance. In particular, low job satisfaction was not correlated with low organizational commitment despite lower job satisfaction. Three main themes connoting meanings of ambivalence were extracted from the data: desiring for the better future in spite of the current difficulty, strengthening their masculinity in tandem with complementing femininity in the midst of gender role conflict, leading their organization at times, and enduring hard work with responsibility for raising their family as a head of household. Conclusion: The findings indicate that male nurses' adjustment to the organization is controlled by ambivalence. It is essential to understand sociocultural contexts of male nurses as a minority in nursing fields for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify on the perceptions of family caregivers toward use of physical restraints according to their values, beliefs, and perceptions using Q methodology. Methods: Thirty-three family care-givers classified 41 selected Q-statements into 9 points standard. The obtained data were analyzed by using a pc QUANL program. Results: Principal component analysis identified 4types of the perceptions of family care-givers toward the use of physical restraints. Type I is 'Rational accepted', which means that they perceived the restraints are essential therapeutic devices and had cooperative attitude to use of medical staffs' restraints. Type II is 'Sardonic sensibility', which means that they have a negative and a cynical attitude to use of physical restraints. Type III is 'Ambivalent', which means that they have conflicts between rationality and emotion, and type IV is 'Practical claim of a right', which means they insist that patients and their family members must be provided with a detailed explanation regarding the application of physical restraints. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that perceptions toward the use of physical restraints among family care-givers should be understood for patients' safety and dignity in medical circumstance. Based on the results, this study will be useful in developing the customized nursing intervention for supporting family care-givers' subjectivity considering the Korean context. Purpose: The purpose of this narrative study was to understand how family caregivers interpreted themselves life during caring for dying patients with glioblastoma, and how they integrated these experiences into their personal biographies. Methods: Three family caregivers were recruited for the study. Data were collected through a series of audio-taped unstructured interviews and conversations with participants. The interviews and observation were conducted between October and November, 2011. Data were analyzed using psychosocial analytical methods that combined case based, in-depth staged analysis of narratives. Results: The life experiences of the family caregivers with a dying family member were summarized as, in their own voices, 'the repetition of gliobalstoma,' 'a smart patient,' 'being obsessed with rehabilitation treatment,' 'the frustration from nothing but just looking at the suffering of the patient,' and 'a stubborn son'. Conclusion: Caregiving was characterised by various roles and life changes from the moment of diagnosis. Family caregivers of brain tumor reported experiences similar to those described by caregivers of people with other cancers. What differed for this group was the rapidity of change and the need for immediate information and support to assist with caring for a person with high-grade glioma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three years have passed since the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency (KMDMAA) was established. In this time, its performance has fallen far short of expectations. Currently, both the KMDMAA and the Korea Consumer Agency (KCA) are responsible for alternative medical dispute resolution in Korea. In the most recent National Assembly administration inspection, Rep. Kim Jae Won of the Saenuri Party made the criticism that in 2013 the KMDMAA spent more than 13 times the budget of the KCA, but did not achieve significantly improved results. An analysis of the relevant law reveals that the KMDMAA has a much more advantageous legal and financial position than the KCA. Mediation takes the form of alternative dispute resolution in place of court adjudication. Mediation is a voluntary process and generally only succeeds when both parties agree. The mediator must be impartial and should aid parties in arriving at a mutually agreed-upon outcome. However, the KMDMAA has failed to build a trusting relationship with medical professionals, and has instead sought power to rule over them. The agency should be aware that power over medical personnel might deter mediation processes, which are based on the spontaneity and trust of both parties. The Department of Health and Human Services and the National Assembly also need to understand the essence of this problem and seek to remedy it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
