Purpose: The objective of this study was to explore nurses’ perception of their roles in shared decision-making about caring for older adults with a chronic disease. Methods: This study was a qualitative descriptive study. Ten nurses participated in the focus group interviews. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to explore nurses’ roles in shared decision-making about caring for older adults with a chronic disease. Results: Nurses' shared decision-making experiences about caring for older adults with a chronic disease yielded four main themes and ten categories including ‘facilitating involvement in decision-making’, ‘providing information for decision-making’, ‘respecting patient values and preferences’, ‘evaluating the outcome of decision-making’. Conclusion: This study explored nurses' roles in shared decision-making about caring for older adults with a chronic disease. Purpose: This study aims to confirm the influence of type D personality and health literacy on resilience of patients hospitalized for Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs), and provide basic information for improving resilience as a post-discharge strategy to promote self-care among patients with chronic diseases. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was carried out in this cross-sectional study. The subjects were 142 patients who were being treated at a tertiary general hospital for CVDs such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Data were collected from July to October 2022 using a structured questionnaire, and then analyzed using the SPSS program version 26.0. Results: 75.3% of the study subjects (n=107) had type D personalities, and the average health literacy and resilience scores were 48.96±9.13 points and 68.27±13.02 points, respectively, indicating relatively low grades. Following a hierarchical regression analysis, low monthly income (β=-.62, p<.001), current smokers (β=-.23, p=.010), patients with type D personality (β=-.24, p=.001), and patients with low health literacy (β=.27, p<.001) were identified as significant predictors of resilience (Adjusted R²=.57, F=14.32, p<.001). Conclusion: In order to increase the resilience of patients hospitalized for CVD, it is necessary to identify and take into account smokers with low socioeconomic status, poor health literacy, and type D personality. We advise doing a follow-up study to ascertain if the resilience of patients hospitalized for CVD influences post-discharge self-care and clinical outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of perceived chronic illness management support, health literacy, and social support on the care burden of families caring for older people with multiple chronic conditions at home. Methods: Families of longterm-care-certified older adults living in Seoul, Korea, were included in this descriptive investigative study. Data were collected from May 25 to June 25, 2022. The families of 195 older patients with multiple chronic diseases completed a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis were used for statistical analyses. Results: The mean score of the care burden was 38.27±14.58. The coefficients of determination of the care burden were family support (β=-.29, p<.001), understanding of health information (β=-.28 p=.035), problem solving/contextual (β=-.19, p=.023), subjective health status (β=.15, p=.045), and male (β=.15, p=.045). Their explanatory power was approximately 25%. Conclusion: The use of an integrated chronic disease management program to reduce the burden of caring for older people with multiple chronic diseases at home, which can promote the understanding of health information and help solve health problems, and family support programs is necessary. Purpose: This study sought to compare needle fenestration with a corticosteroid injection for the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis. We hypothesized that needle fenestration would be as effective as a corticosteroid injection while avoiding the potential adverse effects of the corticosteroid. Materials and Methods: Forty female patients with unilateral chronic plantar fasciitis who did not respond to a minimum of 6 months of various conservative treatments were prospectively randomized to receive either a corticosteroid injection or needle fenestration. Visual analogue scale and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score were used for all patients before treatment and at 3-, 6-, and 12-month following treatment. Results: The corticosteroid injection group had a before-treatment average AOFAS Ankle-Hindfoot score of 56.4, which increased to 87.3 at 3 months and 78.2 at 6 months after treatment but decreased to 62.4 at 12 months. The needle fenestration group had a before treatment average AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score of 49.5, which increased to 77.8 at 3 months and 92.1 at 6 months after treatment and remained at a high score of 89.4 at 12 months. There were no complications in either group. Conclusion: In the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis, needle fenestration is as effective at 3- and 6-month post-treatment as a corticosteroid injection. Evidence-based papers on the treatment of some chronic tendinopathy or ligament lesions using an injection in foot and ankle disorders have been reported, but there are few reports on the treatment of acute ankle ligament injury. On the other hand, some papers have reported a faster return to play for injection therapy that combines RICE (Rest, Icing, Compression, and Elevation) treatment and rehabilitation. Injection therapy can be used as an additional treatment for ankle ligament injury. Rather than having narrow-minded thinking about these treatments, it is important to make efforts to verify the safety and precautions of treatment and recognize them as a category of normal treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the needs for pediatric palliative care (PPC) among parents of children with complex chronic conditions (CCCs) and to investigate differences in the needs for PPC according to their general characteristics. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between March 28 and May 18, 2018. Parents (N=96) who had a child under 18 years with a CCC were recruited. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA. Results: The overall average need for PPC was 3.58±0.33 out of 4.00. In terms of care for the subjects' children, the highest need was physical care, followed by psychosocial and spiritual care. In the sub-dimensions, preservation of physical function received the highest score. Of the items, the highest need was for seizure control. In terms of care for the subjects themselves, the highest need was for psychosocial care, followed by bereavement and spiritual care. In the sub-dimensions, communication received the highest score. Of the items, the highest need was for smooth communication with medical staff. Differences in needs for PPC according to participants' general characteristics were not statistically significant. In Korea, the proportion of medical costs due to chronic diseases among total health care expenditures is increasing rapidly. This trend calls for immediate countermeasures. In the major developed countries in Europe, a gatekeeper system has been adopted at the national level as a universal policy to manage and prevent chronic disease. In South Korea, insurers and local governments offer management programs to individuals with chronic disease and metabolic syndrome under the Korean government's Health Plan 2020, but these programs are fragmented and there are some related limitations. The role of the national government is very important to overcome this problem because the chronic disease management systems of other players (insurers, local governments) must be integrated. In addition, the expert patients program, which is intended to improve the self-care skills of chronic disease patients, needs to be better promoted. Incentives should include "mileage programs" in which patients can accumulate points for successful self-care. It is also important to increase public awareness through large-scale promotional campaigns. Finally, it is necessary to raise funds to conduct national-level campaigns and provide incentives to patients, and to ensure that all processes establish an organic cooperation system. Such practices will maximize the positive effects of a nationwide chronic disease management system in South Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
