, The distribution of earthquakes generated in and around Yamanashi Prefecture is classified mainly into 5 areas, that is, the South Alps of Japan area (Area A) in the west part of Yamanashi Pref., the Minobu-cho and Nanbu-cho area (Area B) in the south part of Yamanashi Pref., the Mt. Fuji area (Area C), the east side of Lake Yamanaka area (Area D) and the Yamanashi city area (Area E) in the north part of Yamanashi Pref. We investigated the secular change of the b value in Gutenberg-Richter’s formula on earthquakes in and around Yamanashi Pref. As a result, the b value usually shows the value of 0.7-0.8, however it decreased until less than 0.6 in 2011 when the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (M 9.0) occurred. This means that the decrease of the b value may have been affected by the 2011 earthquake. According to the secular change of the b value obtained from each area in Yamanashi Pref., the b values from Areas B and C decreased in 2011 and that from Area E decreased in 2010 before the 2011 earthquake, however those from the Areas A and D show no particular change. On the other hand, the b values from Areas A, B and D show the value in the range of 0.7-1.0 obtained from ordinary inland earthquakes, whereas that of Area C shows the high value of 1.4~1.6, implying the influence of volcanic earthquakes observed just under Mt. Fuji. Moreover, although the b value from Area E largely fluctuates, in multiple years it exceeds 1.6, the same level value as that from Area C, suggesting the existence of volcanic activity or hydrothermal activity in the deep underground of Area E.
