Vascular endothelium synthesize and secrete a variety of bioactive substances. Among them, endothelium-derived vasoactive hormones function to regulate not only tonus of the neighboring vascular smooth muscle, but vascular remodeling as well. Therefore, endothelial dysfunction eventually leads to blood pressure abnormality as well as vascular lesions. By focusing on several novel endothelium-derived vasoconstrictors (endothelin, urotensin II) and vasodilators (nitric oxide, adrenomedullin), the recent research progress on their mechanisms of action and secretion and their relevance to disease state is discussed in this review article.
