Thomas Aquinas uses the term “mode” (modus) in various contexts, and some remarkable usages are found in his discussions on virtues. Aquinas places virtues other than the four cardinal virtues in the “potential parts” of the cardinal virtues, for instance, placing generosity (liberalitas) as a potential part of justice. Although the potential parts of a cardinal virtue are not species of the cardinal virtue, they have close connections with it. In order to explain these connections, Aquinas says that the potential parts of a cardinal virtue agree with the cardinal virtue in mode. He also claims that the mode of a virtue is, as it were, a sort of a form of the virtue, whence the virtue derives its praise and its name (ST II-II, q. 157, a. 3). In this claim, we find metaphysical, ethical, and semantic aspects of modes. In this article, we first examine Aquinas’s usages of “modes of virtues” in order to see these aspects of modes. We conclude that “mode” means “a limit which is not to be exceeded” and “a way.” Next, we move on to the metaphysical aspect. Aquinas has elaborate discussions on “modes,” interpreting Augustine’s triad of “mode-species-order,” the three elements which Augustine claims to be in every good created being. We will analyse three major texts in which Aquinas treats the triad as three essential components of every good creature: ST I, q. 5, a. 5, De veritate, q. 21, a. 6, and ST II-I, q. 85, a. 4. By analyzing and connecting Aquinas’s different statements about modes, we clarify what modes are and how they are related to being (esse) and forms in Aquinas’s metaphysical system. Finally, we consider the semantic aspect, building on the preceding analyses. Since “mode” is a word that can connote perfection as well as limitation, it is possible to state that God is a mode. Since the mode is a higher principle than the form, which determines the genus and species, the mode can be a foundation of analogical predication, in which the same word is applied to things of different genera and beyond (i.e., God).

As the second part of my study on “modes” (modi) in Thomas Aquinas, this article investigates ethical aspects of “modes” in various texts of his. First, we examine the texts in which Aquinas treats the “mode of a virtue” (modus virtutis) and consider what it is. The term often connotes the mean of the virtue. In order to understand the varieties of the mode or the mean of the virtue, we explain how moral, intellectual, and theological virtues are in the middle. Unlike ethical and intellectual virtues, theological virtues are not essentially in the middle, and the term “mode of a virtue” designates more broadly the way in which a genuine virtue is exercised. We also consider how this “mode of a virtue” is related to the “mode of reason” (modus rationis) and the “mode of nature” (modus naturae) in the case of moral virtues. Thus, Aquinas uses the term to explicate the nature of virtues. He also employs it in order to classify various virtues into potential parts of the cardinal virtues and to explain how we praise virtues and name them. Second, we scrutinise Aquinas’s interpretation of “modes of courage” (modi fortitudinis), false virtues that appear to be the virtue of courage but are not truly. Through the analysis, we come to understand the difference between the “mode of a virtue” per se and the “mode of a virtue” per accidens. Third, we look at different types of “mode of an action” (modus actionis/agendi) and reach the depth of the equivocity of “mode” in Aquinas’s writings. Aquinas uses the term “mode of an action” in different senses. The term sometimes signifies an action itself: for instance, the mode of the action proper to God is to give being (esse). In many cases, however, the term signifies an attribute of an action. In some cases, it designates “a way, ” i.e., “a circumstance” (circumstantia) of an action distinguished from the other circumstances of an action: for instance, “rapidly” and “slowly” are modes of the action “walking.” In some cases, it signifies a consequence of all the circumstances of an action: (being done in) a good or bad manner is a mode of an action of this type. In other cases, it signifies a consequence of the action: for instance, “delightfully” or “sadly” is a mode of an action consequent upon the action. Throughout our investigation, we observe “modes” in ethical aspects have much in common with those in ontological aspects. The term “mode” means “a limit” and more broadly “a way” in ethical contexts as well. The “mode of a virtue” consists in the determination or commensuration of material and efficient principles of a virtuous action. In fact, we discover more commensurations or proportions in the mode of a virtue than in the mode of a natural kind, and this could explain why we find virtuous actions more beautiful than natural kinds.

Thomas Aquinas uses the term “modes” (modi) in various contexts. Like many other scholastics, he frequently makes distinctions, saying, for instance, that there are two different modes to understand the issue, and then explicating one mode (unus modus) and another (alius modus). In this sort of customary usage, “mode” means nothing more than “a way.” Others, however, seem to have loaded meanings. Aquinas claims that every created good and being has its own mode, species, and order. Here “mode” means the limit or the standard of each being. Some remarkable usages are also found in his discussions on virtues. Aquinas claims that the mode of a virtue is, as it were, a sort of a form of the virtue, whence the virtue derives its praise and its name. Thus, we find ontological, ethical, and semantic aspects of modes in Aquinas's works. This article, which constitutes the first part of my study on Aquinas's modes, focuses upon the first aspects, i.e., the ontological aspects. First, we analyse Augustine's statements on modes as a fundamental source of Aquinas's theory of modes. The Book of Wisdom says, “But you have arranged all things by measure, and number and weight” (11, 20 [21] NRSA). In interpreting this sentence, Augustine claims that each created good and being has a mode, species, and order. Second, we examine Aquinas's interpretation of the Augustinian modes. Through the analyses of texts in which Aquinas discusses Augustine's triad of mode-species-order, we shall see what these modes mean for Aquinas and how they constitute Aquinas's ontology. Third, we focus on the dual meaning of “mode.” Aquinas, as well as Augustine, acknowledges that God is a mode in a different sense from modes in creatures. God is a mode as a measure which assesses everything he creates while creatures have modes that are measured by the divine measure. The dual meaning of mode is not their invention but has existed in the usage of modus in classical Latin as “a measure with which, or according to which, anything is measured, its size, length, circumference, quantity” (Lewis & Short, A Latin Dictionary). Fourth, we search for other sources of Aquinas's ideas of ontological modes. Aquinas attributes his famous ontological thesis “whatever is received is received according to the mode of the recipient” to Pseudo-Dionysius and the Book of Causes. The thesis itself, however, cannot be found anywhere in these works. Hence, we examine how the idea of this thesis is originally found in them. In the final part of this article, we consider the differences between “modes of being” (modi essendi) and “modes of existence” (modi existendi) so as to reach a precise understanding of Aquinas's claim that every created being has its own mode and mode of being.

２０２１年度は「ホスピタリティ概論」を遠隔授業で実施して２年目となった。この科目の受講生を対象に、オンライン学習環境についてのアンケートを行い、２０２０年の結果と比較した。受講場所は自宅外が増加した。アクセスの円滑さの評価は、やや低下した。画面・音声・提示資料の明瞭性等についての評価は横ばいである。受講中に感じることとして、アクセスへの不安が増加した一方、遠隔授業を受けることの快適さも増加している。自由記述回答での特徴的な頻出語についての調査結果からは、受信環境整備の重要性が示唆されている。, ‘Introduction to Hospitality’ was conducted by remote class in two years in row in ２０２１. A survey on remote education environment was conducted, and the result was compared with that of ２０２０ survey. Number of students who took remote class outside home increased. Evaluation of accessibility was slightly decreased. Clarity of the screen, sound and teaching materials remain the same. As for what the students feel during the class, concerns about access increased, while number of students who feel comfortable in taking remote classes increased. Frequent words in free text answer are reported.

本研究では，尾瀬ヶ原に生息するイワナSalvelinus leucomaenisの年齢，体長組成および生息密度など基礎的な情報を得るため，8つの支流および本流において捕獲調査を行った．その結果，イワナ229尾を捕獲し，それら個体の平均体サイズはオスで15.42 ± 5.57cm，メスで14.21 ± 4.05cmであった．鱗から年齢を査定したところ，0歳から6歳の範囲であり，オスの平均は2.67 ± 1.33歳，メスの平均は2.20 ± 1.03歳であった．体サイズを雌雄間および年齢間で比較を行ったところ，年齢間では差が認められたものの，雌雄間で違いは見られなかった．また，8支流における魚類密度を求めたところ，平均0.035尾m-2（範囲：0.006-0.097尾m-2）であり, 他の河川と比べて低い密度であった．また，各支流における雌雄比は平均で0.58（オス/（オス＋メス））であり，比較的支流の上流域および小規模の支流では下流域に比べて雄の割合が高い傾向が見られた．今後，各支流における付着藻類量，水生昆虫量，さらには落下昆虫量といった河川生態系全体から尾瀬ヶ原に生息するイワナの生態解明が望まれる．, In this study, capture surveys were conducted in eight tributaries and the main stream flowing though Ozegahara to obtain basic information of White spotted char Salvelinus leucomaenis on the size frequency, age and population density. As a result, 229 char were captured and the average body size was 15.42 ± 5.57 cm for males and 14.21 ± 4.05 cm for females. Age was assessed from scales and ranged from 0 to 6 years, with males averaging 2.67 ± 1.33 years and females 2.20 ± 1.03 years. Comparisons of body size showed no differences between males and females, although differences were observed between ages. Fish densities in the eight tributaries averaged 0.035 fish m-2 (range: 0.006-0.097 fish m-2), which was low compared to other rivers. The mean sex ratio in each tributary was 0.58 (male / (male + female)), and the proportion of males tended to be higher in the upper reaches and smaller tributaries than in the lower reaches. Further elucidation of the ecology of char inhabiting Ozegahara is desirable, taking into account the amount of attached algae, aquatic insects, and falling insects in each tributary and the entire river ecosystem.

イボキサゴは腹足綱ニシキウズガイ科に属する小型の巻き貝で日本の各地に産するが、特に千葉県では市原市以南の内房海域に多数棲息している。千葉県の加曾利貝塚から出土していることから、縄文時代より利用されていたと見られるが現在一般的な市場価値は乏しい。イボキサゴは干潟の喪失から絶滅したと言われていたが、木更津市の盤洲干潟の復活後に急激な繁殖が見られ千葉県の特別史跡加曾利貝塚の文化財の周知やイベント活動及び未利用資源の有効利用によるSustainable Development Goals（SDGs）を視野に入れたレシピの開発を試みた。しかし、イボキサゴの身は多量の砂粒を含んでいることからその利用には工夫が必要であることがわかった。今回はイベント参加時に開発したレシピとその評価及びイボキサゴの身の利用時の砂粒の除去について解剖学的に観察を行った結果、軟体部の表面すなわち外套膜の周囲などに粘液と絡んだ砂・泥の付着が目立ち消化管内の砂粒も確認できた。砂泥の付着量は個体差があり試食で時々砂の残存感が著しい個体があるという感想があったことと合致した。またイボキサゴの身（冷凍）の貝殻及び内臓部を除去した軟体部のみを可食部とした廃棄率は44％であった。

PDF, 目的：非正規雇用看護師の就業上のニーズを質的記述的に明らかにする。 方法：２施設４名の非正規雇用看護師を対象に、半構成的面接法によるインタビューを実施した。調査内容は、非正規雇用を選択した理由、職務内容、就業上の困難、正規雇用看護師との連携、教育研修内容とそれに対する思い等とし、質的記述的に分析した。 結果：本研究の対象看護師は、４名全員が子どもを有しており、最初に就業した病院を離職後、数年の休職期間を経て、新たな病院へ再就業していた。業務内容は、勤務時間により受け持ちまたは外来業務、またはフリー業務であった。非正規雇用として再就業する過程で生じるニーズとして、『家庭と両立できる職場と看護師としての成長』『看護師としての能力に自信をつける病棟全体の指導体制』が抽出され、カテゴリは各時期により５つの過程に分類された。非正規雇用看護師の就業特性によるニーズとして『家庭と仕事の両立』『正規雇用看護師との良好な関係性』『患者情報の不足に対する情報の共有』『多様な働き方に配慮した師長のマネジメント』『看護師としての能力を発揮できる満足感』『自分らしく看護師として働き続けたい思い』が抽出された。 考察：非正規雇用看護師が新たに就業を開始する時期は、非正規雇用を選択した個々の家庭事情に応じた相談の機会を設け、看護師としてのキャリアが継続できるよう、配置部署の調整や、部署内の研修といった看護マネジメントが求められる。また、非正規雇用看護師の就業特性によるニーズに対して、家庭と仕事の両立への葛藤をできるだけ軽減できるよう業務を調整し、正規雇用看護師との良好な関係性が築けるような働きかけや、看護師としての能力を発揮できるような師長のマネジメント遂行能力が必要である。

In this article, I intend to furnish an overview of Thomas Aquinas’s classification of virtues. I also intend to show some of the philosophical significance of his classification, which is framed by the tradition of the four cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, courage (fortitudo), and temperance. First, I explain the principle of specification of virtues based on Aquinas’s discussion in On Virtues in Common. Since a virtue is defined as a good habit, and the nature of human virtue is under examination, what determines the species of each virtue is its specific difference, i.e., how it is good for a human be- ing. The different kinds of virtue are determined by the characteristics (rationes) of the different things that are good for a human being. Second, I show how Aquinas catalogues different virtues, putting cardinal virtues in the center of the catalogue. He uses three different relations between parts and whole in analyzing the parts of a cardinal virtue: (1) integral parts- whole, (2) subjective parts-whole, (3) potential parts-whole. The virtues other than the cardinal virtues are either (2) subjective parts or (3) potential parts of cardinal virtues. A subjective part of a cardinal virtue is a species of the cardinal virtue; for instance, chastity, a subjective part of temperance, is a species of temperance. Potential parts of a cardinal virtue are labelled “secondary virtues” or “virtues connected (adjunctae)” to the cardinal virtue. However, the relation between a cardinal virtue and its potential parts does not always look the same for each cardinal virtue. The virtue of patience in doing a tough task in our banal daily lives does not seem to require courage, the virtue for fighting in face of death. On the contrary, the virtue of liberty seems to require the virtue of justice; one who won’t give back the amount he owes wouldn’t give his money generously to others. What is common to the potential parts of the cardinal virtues? In the Summa theologiae, Aquinas claims that the potential parts of a cardinal virtue are directed to certain secondary acts or matters, not having, as it were, the whole power of the virtue. Besides this ‘official’ answer to the question, Aquinas could claim that they participate or agree in the mode (modus) of the cardinal virtue. I discuss philosophical advantages and disadvantages of this ‘hidden’ answer to the classification of virtues. Third, I shed a light on some of the philosophical significance of Aquinas’s classification by analyzing several virtues concerning giving money to the others, specifically liberality, magnificence, justice, and mercy (misericordia). Theses virtues are relevant to the act of giving money, but they have different characteristics (rationes) in doing so. Aquinas admits the possibility that poor people may both have the virtue of magnificence and be able to exercise it. Based on this claim, I argue that it makes sense to associate the virtue of magnificence with courage. If someone in extreme poverty donates all his money, for in- stance, the action can be an act of magnificence; and it is closer to an act of courage than to liberality as he may put his life in peril due to this action., 本稿は、二〇一八年十一月三日の京都哲学会で行った講演に基づいている。

In this paper, we analyze the meaning of Adverbial Particles and Focus Particles "Nanka" and clarify the relationship between meanings. When "Nanka" shows examples, some category is formed between explicit examples and other implied examples. From this point of view, we insist that consideration from the viewpoint of the category is useful for comprehensive explanation of the meaning of the particle "Nanka". Furthermore, we point out that the difference between explicit examples is "typical" or "prominent" causes the opposite meaning, such as weakening or emphasizing the impression of the example.

PDF, 〔目的〕学生側の視点から状況設定シミュレーションの成果と課題を明らかにし、今後の状況設定シミュレーションの改善への示唆を得ることを目的とした。〔方法〕A 大学看護学科1 ～ 4 年を対象に、無記名自記式質問紙調査を実施した。A 大学の状況設定シミュレーションの目標や事前学習等の評価等について、4段階で回答を求めた。「そう思う」「ややそう思う」を肯定的回答、「あまりそう思わない」「思わない」を否定的回答として、学年別の差をみるため、χ２検定を行った。〔結果〕状況設定シミュレーションの目標に対する評価では、「SBAR を用いて報告できるようになった」は、学年間に有意差があり、学年が上がるにつれて肯定的回答が上昇していた。事前に提示された課題以外に、関連する知識や技術演習をしてきた学生ほど、デブリーフィングでの積極的な発言や主体的参加、ディスカッションへの集中等が高い傾向にあることがわかった。デブリーフィングは、「学習内容が深まった」の評価は高かったが、「積極的に発言できた」の評価は他の項目と比較して低かった。学内でシミュレーションを経験して、「実習で患者に接する際のイメージができた」学生は多かったが、「緊張感が軽減できた」「看護をする自信がついた」学生は約70％前後に留まった。〔考察〕A 大学の状況設定シミュレーションの目標は概ね達成されていた。「SBAR を用いた報告」は、他の項目と比較すると肯定的回答が低いが、高学年になるほど学習経験が積み重なり、自信がついていくと思われる。デブリーフィングで積極的に発言できるためには、学生側だけではなく、教員側の姿勢も問われる。今後は、少人数での実施やアイスブレイクを取り入れ、発言しやすい環境をつくるとともに、教員側の姿勢として、「できた、できない」を評価するのではなく、「失敗してもよい、そこから学ぶことが重要である」という前提を再認識する必要がある。

当研究は､長崎県の歴史と地域社会の文化を知る観光が､日本以外の国からの観光者の対日本ｲﾒｰｼﾞに影響するかを検討する｡Ⅰでは､当研究の背景を示す｡Ⅱでは､観光者である本学科の留学生の出身国と日本の政府間関係の現状を確認する｡ⅢとⅣでは､上記留学生たちを主たる対象として行ったｱﾝｹｰﾄ調査の結果を報告する｡長崎県内での体験観光を含む研修旅行の終了後､留学生たちの日本に対する印象に､ﾌﾟﾗｽ方向の変化が見られた｡, This study considers whether tourist's experience can affect her / his image toward Japan as a host country of international tourism. This task is carried out through questionnaires answered by international (and Japanese) students who participated in a study tour conducted in 2016. The above questionnaires were conducted at beginning and end of a study tour in which the participating students visit World Heritage candidate sites, as well as being exposed to local community culture, in Nagasaki prefecture. Background of this study will be shown in Chapter Ⅰ. Inter-governmental relations affects possibilities of international tourism, as well as tourists' impression of destination country. As a preparation to consider answers to the above questionnaire, current status of inter-governmental relations, between countries where international students come from on one hand, and Japan on the other, are reported in Chapter Ⅱ . Results of the questionnaires answered by the international (as well as the Japanese) students will be reported in Chapters Ⅲ and Ⅳ. International students' impression of Japan as a host country of tourism has changed in positive direction after the above-mentioned study tour.
