- Abstract
pdf, Takizawa Bakin made a thorough study of The Water Margin. His comments on The Water Margin can be seen in a great many of his works beginning with the introduction to Hakkenden. I would like to discuss Eakin's view of The Water Margin, in particular what he called its "three esoteric ambiguities." Bakin refers repeatedly to the idea of rewarding good and punishing evil in The Water Margin, but is The Water Margin in fact a novel with such a theme? On the basis of various arguments I think that it is fair to say that the author of The Water Margin had no such purpose in mind. Bakin misunderstood the term, "Bai-shi-dao." It is also doubtful that the author of The Water Margin attributed meaning to the personal names "Hong Jin" and "Wang Jin" to the depth which Bakin's inquiries took him.
