Proteins are composed of 20 amino acids. Among these amino acids, branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) are essential amino acids and abundant in proteins. Since exercise promotes the degradation of branched-chain amino acids and increases the amino acid requirement for humans, a mix of the branched-chain amino acids is used as an amino acid supplement. It has been reported that branched-chain amino acid supplementation suppressed a rise in serum creatine kinase activity and protein degradation induced by exercise, suggesting that the supplementation decreases exercise induced muscle damage. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that leucine stimulates muscle protein synthesis. These facts suggest that the branched-chain amino acid supplement is useful for developing muscles through training. The other potential function for branched-chain amino acids is to decrease the central fatigue because the branched-chain amino acids tire competitive with tryptophan for transportation into the brain. These findings indicate that branched chain amino acids are useful as a supplement to sports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
