This paper describes a study of school physical education (PE) in French Indochina to cover the existing lack of knowledge on the developmental process of PE in developing countries. The study focused specifically on how PE developed in the Indochina Union, based on "colonial experience" in each region of French Indochina. A historical overview revealed that the former colonial countries had reconstructed their own education models in response to the demands of the extrinsic development model imposed by the colonial government. However, it was suggested that individual societal values may have regulated the behavior of the colonial people, and redefined the characteristics of PE. Regarding the process by which PE had been introduced, it was found that after sporadic and uneven efforts at gymnastics education based on the "General regulation of education" in 1917, the introduction of PE in the Indochina Union had gained momentum as a result of "Instruction n°26" issued by the Superior General Commander in 1921 and the "General Regulation of Physical Education" approved by the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts. Moreover, based on failures experienced in the early stages, the French-Indochina administration took measures to prepare for the introduction of full-scale PE through a series of "arrêté" in 1924, including the signing of an agreement between the University and Military, provision of special allowances to military instructors, establishment of the Regional Center for Physical Instruction (CRIP), and physiological surveys conducted by the special committee. Furthermore, it was revealed that the PE program started in French Indochina through the 1925 PE campaign included the establishment of PE classes and annual sports festivals through the PE facilities established at fullexercise schools (école de plein exercice), and a teacher training system that was organized in 1926 by adopting the teaching methods of the Joinville School, distribution of PE manuals, and establishment of several PE training courses for teachers. There are still remarkable discrepancies in chemotherapy for gastric cancer between the Asia and West. Frequency, pathophysiology, treatment details, and outcomes of gastric cancer vary greatly depending on racial and regional differences. For example, in Japan, endoscopic mucosal resection/dissection is widely used for the diagnosis of early gastric cancer. Surgical outcomes are better in Japan than in the West, and the degree of lymph node dissection tends to be lower in the West. It is important to note that there are differences in the various backgrounds surrounding gastric cancer in the geographical regions. This paper describes the current status and future prospects of chemotherapy strategies in the field of gastric cancer chemotherapy, where new agents have been introduced successively in recent years, in Asia and the West, including background differences such as frequency and pathological conditions.

Proactive approaches to collect precise information are necessary to control infectious diseases in the whole world. A collaborative research for infectious diseases with institute or university of countries that infectious diseases occur is one of the good approaches. In this paper, we introduce collaborative researches on infectious diseases with Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, and India.

The number of members (about 16,000) of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (JSPN) is second only to that (about 38,000) of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in the world. The JSPN is the biggest national psychiatric society in Asia. However, the JSPN has not played a sufficient role to improve psychiatry and mental health services of neighboring Asian countries. In this paper, I would like to present my personal viewpoints on the possible way the JSPN can contribute to improving Asian psychiatry and mental health services. Based on my experience for many years of working in Asia, I would like to suggest: (A) to study the historical background of the development of modern Asian psychiatry since colonial times; (B) to take into consideration the different levels of socio-economic development, culture, and mental health resources of other Asian countries; (C) to find a way to promote dialogues among greatly diverse Asian psychiatric societies; (D) to form mutually beneficial relationships among mental health workers from various Asian countries.

We searched all of the scientific papers concerning Kawasaki disease published in the year 2000 and after, through the Kawasaki Disease Database managed in Jichi Medical University. In searching articles, a word "epidemiology" was keyed, therefore there may be missing in identifying articles related to the occurrence of the disease. The disease has already been reported from more than 60 countries as of 2004 around the world. It is estimated that the disease occurs in more countries at this point. From reviewing articles it was found that, (1) The incidence rates are highest in Japan followed by East Asian countries and areas surrounding Japan such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, (2) In many countries, the incidence rates are increasing, (3) There are no clear differences between countries in basic epidemiological pictures such as sex ratio, age distribution.

Hitherto, Bo-Juyi has been known as a sickly poet. But analysis of his disease according to the traditional Chinese medicine had not been until this paper. So many factors affected his illness; especially the weak life power which he was given from his mother and the heavy load of stress he suffered were worsening factors. His habits of heavy drinking of alcohol and tea weakened his constitution by creating bad waters in his body-which normally would have protected the flow of Qi, blood and fluids. Therefore, he was susceptible to many diseases.

"In this paper, our main aim is to examine long-term trends of Japanese interprefectural migration after the War by using a Markov migration model.... We observed dependence of in- and out-migration on the size of populations by prefecture.... Major findings based on the time-series observation of stationary distributions by year are as follows: First from [the 1950s] to 1970 migrants tended to concentrate [on] densely populated industrialized prefectures (Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi), but after that during [the 1970s] populations have redistributed to provincial prefectures. "This paper aims to compile and evaluate the information on the population of Southeast Asia in the Mid-nineteenth century appearing in the Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia, which was published from 1847 to 1860 in Singapore. The journal contains considerable numbers of population figures for the pre-census period,...[concerning] Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, the Straits Settlements, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Borneo, and other parts of insular Southeast Asia. The general tendency of the population counts of insular Southeast Asia in this period by the Europeans is toward underestimation. "The purpose of the present paper is to describe findings from a survey on attitudes toward marriage and family among Japanese never-married youth from the point of view of the general framework of the demand and supply system. The survey was conducted as a part of the Tenth Japanese National Fertility Survey on the first of July in 1992.... Most nations in Asia are developing countries. Recently, in developed and developing countries cancer has become an important public health problem. This paper reviews the characteristics of cancer epidemiology in Asia and describes the cancer mortality, cancer incidence, migrant studies and current status of secondary prevention for cancer in several Asian countries. Unfortunately, mortality statistics and data on cancer incidence are frequently not available or not very accurate in most developing countries. Greater cooperation is hoped for between Japan and other Asian countries in order to obtain more exact information on cancer statistics and to draw up an accurate cancer map.

"Trends and correlates of dramatic fertility declines in the NIES [newly industrialized economies of Asia] from the 1960s to the 1980s are examined in this paper. Specifically, we first look at changes in the fertility effects of such demographic factors as age structure of fertility, age pattern of marriage, and marital fertility. Next, as major proximate determinants of fertility, we examine changes in contraception and induced abortion. "This paper examined the validity of a Butz-Ward-type model by applying it to trends in Japan's fertility rates from 1968 to 1986. Most of the existing studies on the Butz-Ward model used total fertility rates as the dependent variable. As the Butz-Ward model is concerned with couples' fertility behaviors, [the author uses]...total marital fertility rates. We first calculated total marital fertility rates (TMFR) from 1968 to 1986 by using data of Japan's National Fertility Surveys.... As a result of the auto-regression analysis of TMFR, we found a statistically significant negative effect of a rise in employed wife's wage rate as was expected. "This paper carried out a multivariate hazard analysis of the first, second and third birth timings by applying [a] log-logistic model. The results are as follows: (1) When wives are employed, the first, second and third birth hazards are all smaller than others....(2) Coresiding with couple's parents is likely to raise the first, second and third birth hazards irrespective of wife's employment status; (3) Wives with tertiary level education are accompanied by a smaller first birth hazard compared with others, while wife's educational attainment does not show any effect on the second and third birth hazards; (4) White-collar husbands are associated with a smaller first birth hazard when their wife is employed; (5) Even after controlling for several background variables, the first, second and third birth timings were accelerated in the cohorts of the late 1960s. The 1st section of this paper, using a method to decompose a change in the total marital fertility rate into the quantum and tempo effects, confirmed the major effect of birth timing on the 1970s trends in the total marital fertility rate based on the pooled data of the 8th and 9th Japanese National Fertility Surveys of 1982 and 1987, respectively. In the next section, proportional hazards model analyses of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd birth functions for the pooled data made it clear that the 1st and 2nd birth intervals among the marriage cohorts since the end of the 1960s were shorter than those in the early 1960s even after having controlled for other variables. Given that 1 conception or more can occur during a birth interval, proportional hazards model analyses were again utilized to examine the effects of various variables on the time elapsed since marriage and the 1st conception, the time between the end of the 1st pregnancy and the 2nd conception, and the time between the end of the 2nd pregnancy and the 3rd conception. The authors found that the 1st-conception probability of the marriage cohorts since the late 1960s was smaller than that of predecessors, while the 2nd-conception probability was not affected by marriage cohort. In the last section, a logistic regression analysis of the probability of induced abortion showed that the probability of aborting a 2nd pregnancy decreased in the 1970s compared with that in the early 1960s. When a proportional hazards model analysis of the 2nd birth function was applied after omitting those cases where the 1st pregnancy did not result in birth and/or the 2nd pregnancy was aborted, the strong effect of marriage cohort on the 2nd birth probability was substantially diluted. These facts suggest that the shortened 2nd birth interval in the 1970s was partly caused by the shrinking probability of aborting a 2nd pregnancy in this period.

The present study is part of a larger project on the formal demographic analysis of Japanese fertility. It deals with the most elusive aspect of fertility, that is the tempo of fertility. The temporal aspect of fertility, particularly in terms of cohort fertility framework with speical reference to parity of women, has been emphasized by Whelpton and Ryder, but in the Japanese demography there have scarcely been studies of this aspect, probably due to lack of interest. In very recent years, however, interest has grown, reflecting the need for more accurate fertility projections in the future in connection with population projections. The present study is an application of life table techniques to explore the temporal aspect of fertility in Japan. 2 methods have been used. One is the age-marriage-parity specific net reproduction rate tables, which were first constructed by the senior author of this paper. The other is by Professor Chin Long Chiang at the University of California, Berkely. In the application of the former type, net reproduction rate tables were constructed for 3 dates -- 1970-71, 1975-76, and 1980-81. Through this method, it was demonstrated that recent fertility for the period 1980-81 was reduced, partly because of the decline in fertility in live-birth order of 1 and 2 among the relatively young ages up to 25 years old. On the other hand, for the ages up to 30 years old, some catching-up mechanisms took place. The 2nd method is by Chiang's new approach to the fertility table. According to his method, which was included in his new book entitled Life Tables and Its Applications, parity-oriented fertility tables have been constructed for the Japanese females for every year from 1971 through 1983, both inclusive. In these cases, denominator is for year z while numerator is concerned with yea z + 1. This method is particularly interesting since it can calculate waiting time for childbearing until the completion of family formation. Some of the findings indicated: 1) recent increases in both parity progession ratio and parity-specific fertility rate in low parity augur a future increase in fertility in the period measure in the near future; and 2) a shortening of the waiting time until the completion of family formation around 1981 and then the recovery of its lengthening in the years 1982 and 1983 suggest a recent trend of lengthening actual reproductive period which definitely contributes to an increase in fertility.

This paper clarifies the child-sex effects on the number of additional children in Japan. The data were retrospective birth histories of the 8th Japanese National Fertility Survey carried out by the Institute of Population Problems in 1982. 1st, the authors found that the majority of the Japanese had a balanced sex preference. There was a slight shift from boy preference to girl preference in terms of the parity progression ratio. The effect of the 1st child's sex was small, but the effect of the parity-2 sex combination was as big or bigger than that of other socioeconomic variables. Next, the authors observed some evidence suggesting strong sex preference in opinion and behavior, such as differential intentions of further childbearing due to the sex of previous children and differences in the number of abortions caused by the sex combination of living children. Finally, the authors noted further issues to be examined in the study of sex preference in Japan.
