Background: Accurate tip positioning of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is crucial for optimal drug delivery and avoiding complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the amplitude ratios of intravascular electrocardiography (ivECG) and external electrocardiography (exECG) according to the tip location. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed ivECG, exECG, and chest X-ray (CXR) of 278 patients who underwent a PICC procedure. The tip-to-carina distance (TCD) was measured using vertebral body units (VBU) on CXR. Tip locations were categorized as follows: Zone 1, malposition (TCD < 0.8 VBU); Zone 2, suboptimal (0.8 VBU ≤ TCD < 1.5 VBU); Zone 3, optimal (1.5 VBU ≤ TCD ≤ 2.4 VBU); Zone 4, deep (TCD > 2.4 VBU). The amplitude ratios between ivECG and exECG and within ivECG were compared in each zone. Results: The ivECG/exECG amplitude ratios of P-wave (Piv/Pex) and QRS-complex (QRiv/QRex and RSiv/RSex) in Zone 3 were significantly higher than in Zones 1 and 2 (adjusted P < 0.05). The ivECG amplitude ratios of the P-wave and QRS-complex (Piv/QRiv and Piv/RSiv) were significantly lower in Zone 3 than in Zones 1 and 2 (adjusted P < 0.001). The calculated TCD using stepwise multiple regression analysis was estimated to be 1.121 + 0.078 × Piv/Pex - 0.172 × Piv/QRiv. Conclusions: Though caution is required, amplitude ratios such as Piv/Pex and Piv/QRiv can help determine tip location during the PICC catheterization procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Radiography training for students in colleges of radiology should be based on real clinical situations. The purpose of this study was to verify the clinical validity of our originally developed scenarios for chest X-ray training and the instructional contents using gaze information of experienced radiology technologists (RTs)., Methods: We divided 8 RTs with different experiences into an evaluator group (3 RTs) and a subject group (5 RTs). The evaluator group created a validation model consisting of 31 items, a chest X-ray scenario, instructional contents, and gaze attention objects during the scenario. The subject group simulated chest X-ray wearing an eye tracker. The evaluator group evaluated fit rates of the validation model to subjects' procedures based on gaze information to verify the clinical validity of the validation model., Results: The subject group procedures did not deviate from the scenario. We obtained a fit rate of 91.6±6.70%., Conclusion: Our validation model showed more than 90% fitting with the chest X-ray techniques of five RTs with different backgrounds. This result suggested that the scenario and instructional contents in this study had clinical validity.

Purpose: In recent years, there has been a growing movement in Western countries toward the abolition of gonadal protection during radiography. The reasons for this recommendation are that there are few reports of increased risk of genetic effects, that the ovarian dose is not due to direct X-rays but due to internally scattered X-rays that cannot be shielded, and that the presence of gonadal protection may adversely affect the automatic exposure control mechanism and may mask important findings. In addition, the gonadal protection is a large high absorber of X-rays, and its presence in the irradiation field may have some effect on image quality, but the effect of the gonadal protection on image quality has not been clarified. In addition, after the abolition of gonadal protection, the optimal irradiation field setting is expected to become even more important to avoid unnecessary exposure. In this study, we investigated the effect of gonadal protection on image quality in frontal hip radiographs of adults with different radiation qualities and clarified the image quality under conditions in which the irradiation field is appropriately narrowed., Method: Frontal hip radiographs were taken using a human phantom as the subject, and the image quality of the femoral head was evaluated. Two irradiation fields were used: (a) 14×17 inch field and (b) an appropriate field (11.6×15 inch) that does not impair the reference line and image information necessary for reading hip joint images. The imaging tube voltage was set at 70 kV, and conditions for adding a copper filter were also considered. The incident surface air kerma was set to 1.25 mGy. The incident surface dose at this time was sufficiently lower than the diagnostic reference level (2.5 mGy) in Japan and was judged to be appropriate for imaging using an indirect conversion flat panel detector. The image quality evaluation item was the signal difference to noise ratio (SdNR) including scatterers., Result: The SdNR decreased by 4.6% when a gonadal shield was placed, indicating that the gonadal shield reduced image quality. When the irradiation field size was appropriately narrowed down, SdNR slightly increased or decreased depending on the quality of the imaging material, but the change was small compared to the change in SdNR with and without the gonadal protection shield., Conclusion: The results of this study confirm that the elimination of gonadal protection in hip radiography has significant advantages, such as reducing unnecessary X-ray exposure while ensuring image quality, when the irradiation field is set appropriately.

We have been developing protective equipment for portable radiography in neonatal intensive care units because the portable radiography's X-ray tube is in close proximity to the head of the nurse who is assisting the patient. Although our initial protective-equipment design was highly effective, there were some concerns that it obstructed the view of the patient and was difficult to handle. To overcome this problem, we have developed two new types of protective device: a narrow-type 0.13 mmPb device, 17 cm long and 45 cm wide (weight 200 g); and a wide type with a wider core material, 45 cm long and 25 cm wide (weight 300 g), both of which can be hung from the collimator cover of mobile X-ray equipment. The measured protective effectiveness was 80.6% at head height for the wide type and 76.8% for the narrow type. A survey of nurses regarding the new protective devices revealed no significant differences between the two types in terms of visibility and whether the devices would be an obstacle when assisting patients. The nurses preferred the wider type, which offered better protection. Radiological technologists also liked that both types were easy to handle because the irradiation field could be adjusted even after the device was fitted. Both types of the new protective device are thus expected to be useful in clinical practice in terms of their high protective effect and improved ease of handling.

The average glandular dose (AGD) is very important in the quality control of mammography. The AGD calculation requires measurements of half-value layer (HVL) and entrance surface air karma (ESAK). The HVL is measured by the Al-attenuation method using a non-energy-dependent ionization dosimeter. As the Al-attenuation method performs measurements using a succession of added filters, it requires lots of X-ray exposure and measurement time. In recent years, measuring instruments that can measure tube voltage, irradiation time, exposure dose, HVL, and other factors, at the same time, using one shot of X-rays have been developed. In this study, measurement of the AGD using multiparameter X-ray measuring instrument about rhodium (Rh) and tungsten (W) anode X-ray tubes. A comparative study was performed using standard ionization dosimeters. The error in measurements was as follows: HVL 5.8%, ESAK 3.3%, and AGD 2.9%. The AGD measurement using a multiparameter X-ray measuring instrument is simple and can significantly reduce the measurement time while maintaining accuracy.

Purpose: We have been using a paper-based hard copy print (paper print) system of X-ray images, in which digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) data can be directly output on papers from medical imaging systems or from a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) server, and they are utilized as patient referral materials or for preoperative planning. The purpose of this study was to compare the display performance of X-ray images on the printed paper and that on the liquid crystal display (LCD)., Methods: We measured contrast response to verify consistency of image appearance on both display systems. The contrast resolution was assessed by a CDRAD phantom. The spatial resolution was assessed by an X-ray test chart., Results: The contrast response of the paper printer was not concordant with the grayscale standard display function (GSDF). The difference between the measured contrast response and the ideal GSDF on the paper was large in the high-density area. The low-contrast resolution on the paper was inferior to that on the LCD. The spatial resolving power on the paper was superior to that on the LCD., Conclusion: The display performance of the paper printer for X-ray images was clarified. X-ray images printed on the paper should be used carefully taking account of their characteristics of display performance.

Purpose: In this study, we propose a system that combines a depth camera with a deep learning model for estimating the human skeleton and a depth camera to estimate the shooting part to be radiographed and to acquire the thickness of the subject, thereby providing optimized X-ray imaging conditions., Methods: We propose a system that provides optimized X-ray imaging conditions by estimating the shooting part and measuring the thickness of the subject using an RGB camera and a depth camera. The system uses OpenPose, a posture estimation library, to estimate the shooting part., Results: The recognition rate of the shooting part was 15.38% for the depth camera and 84.62% for the RGB camera at a distance of 100 cm, and 42.31% for the depth camera and 100% for the RGB camera at a distance of 120 cm. The measurement accuracy of the subject thickness was within ±10 mm except for a few cases, indicating that the X-ray imaging conditions were optimized for the subject thickness., Conclusion: The implementation of this system in an X-ray system is expected to enable automatic setting of X-ray imaging conditions. The system is also useful in preventing increased exposure dose due to excessive dose or decreased image quality due to insufficient dose caused by incorrect setting of X-ray imaging conditions.

Introduction: X-ray penumbral width depends on the size of the detector in the off-axis ratio of medical linear accelerators. The use of detectors with appropriate sizes according to the irradiation field is recommended. However, when measuring dose distributions, the shape of the off-axis ratio differs depending on detectors even if the dose distribution remains unchanged. This study aims to calculate the penumbral width using multiple detectors and obtain the independent penumbral width according to irradiation size., Materials and Methods: Using the X-ray output from a medical linear accelerator, off-axis ratios in water were measured using nine types of detectors. Penumbral width was calculated from each measured off-axis ratio by linear approximation and determining the intercept for analysis. The experimental irradiation fields were square areas (1×1 cm 2 to 10×10 cm 2 ). Penumbral widths were obtained from three types of detectors with different sensitive region widths of at least 1.2 mm., Results: The values estimated from the nine detectors were 2.51-4.07 and 2.93-4.70 mm for 6 and 10 MV X-rays, respectively. The penumbral width and variation due to detector size increased with the irradiation field. The results estimated from the three selected detectors varied within ±0.5 mm compared with those from the nine detectors and were generally consistent. The reliability of the results was evaluated by comparing with the results from past studies and Monte Carlo simulations., Conclusion: Calculation of the penumbral width can be done regardless of size for various detectors. Thus, dose distributions can be compared for the linear accelerator at different facilities.

Objective: Subject contrast of pulmonary tissues was investigated for five X-ray beams (70 kV without filter, 90 kV with 0.15 mm Cu filter, 90 kV with 0.2 mm Cu filter, 120 kV without filter, and 120 kV with 0.2 mm Cu filter) in CsI-FPD chest radiography using two types of model phantoms by Monte Carlo simulation., Methods: A total of 72 million photons were entered to the model lung phantom (width, 300 mm; length, 300 mm; thickness, 200 mm; air space, 120 mm) and model mediastinum phantom (width, 300 mm; length, 300 mm; thickness, 200 mm; air space, 40 mm). Individual primary and secondary photon's process (absorption, scattering, and penetration) in the phantom and CsI-detector was recorded by Monte Carlo simulation. Subject contrast was calculated by entered and absorbed photon's number in the CsI-detector., Results: Subject contrast pulmonary tissues were high to low energy X-ray beam; however, the ones of soft tissue and soft tissue overlaying bone had few differences for beam quality except 70 kV without filter. Moreover, the subject contrast by absorbed photons was higher compared to the one by entered photons in CsI., Conclusion: It was shown that the subject contrast study by Monte Carlo calculation can be replaced by the way of physical chest phantom, and that the subject contrast by absorbed photons and by injected photons in CsI was different. Furthermore, be verified that the subject contrast of soft tissue and soft tissue overlaying bone differs hardly.

Purpose: We developed X-ray dose monitoring and optimization software for computed tomography (CT) by using a spreadsheet software., Methods: The analysis was carried out on 1,212 patients using 2,128 CT examinations at our institution, in the period of April 2020 to April 2022. These cases were extracted in the limitation of patient's weight in the range of 50 to 70 kg. The individual radiation report, including CTDI vol and DLP, on the console displayed by a CT system was used and manually transferred to our software. The X-ray dose distribution was evaluated by using a boxplot chart and a scatter plot, and the data were referred to Japan DRLs 2020 (National Diagnostic Reference Levels in Japan 2020)., Results: Almost all patient's doses in our institution were distributed in the acceptable ranges in comparison with the Japan DRLs 2020. Neither extremely high nor low dose data were recorded. However, seven cases recorded outlier dose values. Three cases were caused by errors during manually inputting the data. Four from seven cases were explored the reason to record outlier dose values., Conclusion: Our software on a spreadsheet software worked well to explore the CT dose data, such as CTDI vol and DLP. Our software was able to find cases that were recorded as outlier dose values, but their values were not extremely high/low values. The cautionary notice of either high or low dose, as a function of our software, will be able to keep our patient's CT dose in the universal-standard "justification and optimization" level.

Purpose: The Scheffé's method obtains the difference between pair comparisons with that of the interval scale and can judge the superiority or inferiority of the sample to be compared with no restriction in the observation image by the statistical significant difference. However, the Scheffé's method cannot be judged as a single image quality indicator. Therefore, I examined a method that can evaluate the association of average degree of preference of Scheffé's method and the physical quantities that make up the image., Methods: This study focuses on the fact that the average degree of preference of the Scheffé's method is quantitative data on the interval scale and that multiple regression analysis is possible. In the multiple regression analysis, the average degree of preference by imaging simulated pulmonary adenocarcinoma with different exposure doses was used as the objective variable and the exposure doses and noise (standard deviation [SD]) were used as the explanatory variables. The Scheffé's method used the Nakaya's modified method., Results: In the multiple regression analysis, SD was P=0.027. By substituting the threshold value of the intersection of the exposure doses and SD into the multiple regression equation (predictive model), the average degree of preference (Ŷ) was calculated. Ŷ (Scheffé;Gy,SD) was -0.147, which was about 1/2 of exposure doses (-0.150)., Conclusion: The multiple regression analysis of Scheffé's (average degree of preference) and physical quantity factors (exposure doses and noise) has made it possible to design images that can reduce exposure doses while maintaining adequate image quality.

The Japan Network for Research and Information on Medical Exposures (J-RIME) established the diagnostic reference level (DRL) and is advancing optimization of radiation protection. We believe that the difference in the imaging dose between facilities may be due to the fact that automatic exposure control (AEC) adjustment is not unified among manufacturers. The consistency of AEC is specified in JIS 4751-2-54, but it is not applicable to digital X-ray imaging systems because it is for optical density of analog X-ray imaging systems. This article evaluates the consistency of AEC in digital X-ray imaging systems. The AEC consistency was compared with the AEC-estimated dose from the air kerma (K AEC ) using the phosphor-based imaging plate placed at the back of the AEC detector. We measured the AEC tube voltage and subject thickness characteristics (tracking) of four types of digital X-ray imaging systems at three facilities. In the test of tube voltage characteristics, the average K AEC values at all tube voltages were 2.37±0.04  µGy for A system, 7.30±1.44  µGy for B system, 3.53±0.13  µGy for C system, and 5.70±0.18  µGy for D system. The relative errors were +2.6 to -1.8% for A system, +25.3 to -22.6% for B system, +5.2 to -1.4% for C system, and +2.5 to -4.4% for D system. In the subject thickness characteristics test, the average K AEC values for all Al thicknesses were 2.34±0.02  µGy for A system, 5.95±0.23  µGy for B system, 4.25±1.12  µGy for C system, and 5.03±1.27  µGy for D system. The relative errors were +1.0 to -0.9% for A system, +4.1 to -5.0% for B system, +40.5 to -28.1% for C system, and +19.7 to -42.9% for D system.

Purpose: X-ray CT examinations are required not only in routine medical examinations but also in various situations such as emergency medical care. Although medical staff may be exposed to radiation when assisting patients, the distribution of air-absorbed doses in the CT examination room when using a special protective shield for CT has not been clarified. Here, we measured air-absorbed doses at several points simultaneously to clarify the distribution of these doses and the effect of a special protective shield for CT in reducing them., Method: A human phantom was imaged with an X-ray CT system. The absorbed dose in the air dose profile distribution was measured with an OSL dosimeter in the presence and absence of a special protective shield for CT., Results: The highest air absorbed doses of 4.27 mGy were at 0 cm in the horizontal direction, 120 cm in the vertical direction, and 50 cm in the body axis direction. The largest reduction in air absorbed dose following installation of the special protective shield for CT was 91.7%, obtained at 0 cm in the horizontal direction, 150 cm in the vertical direction, and 50 cm in the body axis direction., Conclusion: A 91.7% reduction in air-absorbed dose was o directly behind the special protective shield for CT. The reduction in air-absorbed dose was 65.8% at the location of a gap between the special protective shield for CT and gantry.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of incident air kerma (K a,r ) and air kerma-area product (P KA ) displayed on over-couch-type X-ray fluoroscopic systems by comparing them with the measured values., Methods: An ionizing chamber was placed at the patient entrance reference point to measure the K a,r . The P KA was calculated by multiplying the K a,r by the irradiation area. These measured values were compared with the displayed values., Results: The differences between measured and displayed K a,r and P KA were less than ±35%, which was the criteria of the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). However, the accuracy of the displayed values differed depending on the manufacturer and the device., Conclusion: Although no error exceeding the JIS criteria was observed, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the X-ray fluoroscopic systems related to displayed dose and to manage the systems by performing dose measurements periodically.

Purpose: To validate the effects of changing the source-to-image receptor distance (SID) parameter of scattered X-ray correction after exposure on the image quality in portable chest radiography., Methods: The actual SID and tube current-time product (mAs) were varied such that the direct X-ray dose to a flat panel detector (FPD) remained constant. We created two groups as follows: Group A (with the SID parameter unchanged) and Group B (with the SID parameter changed to the actual SID after a phantom chest exposure). The image contrast ratio and standard deviation (SD) were measured on the chest radiographs for physical assessment. Observer studies were performed by seven radiological technologists. Scheffé's (Ura) paired comparison methods were performed with image contrast, noise, and overall assessment as the assessment items. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for lung nodules was performed., Results: The image contrast ratio and SD in Group A changed, whereas the changes in Group B were less than those in Group A for both these properties. The observer study with Scheffé's methods showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) for all assessment items in Group A but not in Group B. The ROC analysis did not indicate any statistically significant differences in either group., Conclusion: Changing the SID parameter of scattered X-ray correction after exposure can possibly maintain image contrast and noise in portable chest radiography if the actual SID changes.

Senior radiological technologists have made various improvements and have supported the clinical and educational fields by explaining bone X-ray radiography to students and junior radiological technologists to understand the procedure using illustrations, X-ray images, and photographs in a way that corresponds to the design software available for that era. Because human bone specimens are only available in the anatomy laboratory of medical schools, they could not be used for the explanation of bone X-ray radiography until now. Therefore, we have developed a bone X-ray radiography manual using bone specimens for the bone X-ray radiography education, which helps students to understand the procedure of bone X-ray radiography. Previous bone X-ray radiography manuals had not been illustrated by bone specimens and bone specimen X-ray images, but this bone X-ray radiography manual using bone specimens has made it possible to understand the surface morphology of bone specimens and X-ray images of them. In addition, the data of bone X-ray radiography using this bone specimen were made into an electronic file, which can be easily used at the place of radiological examination or at home through electronic media.

We published a report entitled "Creation of a stereo-paired bone anatomical chart using human bone specimen for radiation education" in this journal in order to accurately understand the surface structure and three-dimensional structure of bones, and assist in bone image interpretation. However, some people cannot see stereoscopically with the naked eye. Therefore, we created anaglyph three-dimensional (3D) images from stereo-paired images of the stereo X-ray anatomical chart of the bone specimen. The anaglyph of the bone surface and X-ray images facilitates stereoscopic viewing with red-blue 3D glasses. The stereo X-ray anatomical chart of the bone specimen with anaglyph 3D images was converted into an electronic data file in the same manner as the stereo X-ray anatomical chart of the bone specimen, which can be easily used in any radiological examination rooms or at home through an electronic medium. We made it possible to perform correlative stereoscopic observations of the bone surface and X-ray images using red-blue 3D glasses.

In computed tomography (CT) systems, the optimal X-ray energy in imaging depends on the material composition and the subject size. Among the parameters related to the X-ray energy, we can arbitrarily change only the tube voltage. For years, the tube voltage has often been set at 120 kVp. However, since about 2000, there has been an increasing interest in reducing radiation dose, and it has led to the publication of various reports on low tube voltage. Furthermore, with the spread of dual-energy CT, virtual monochromatic X-ray images are widely used since the contrast can be adjusted by selecting the optional energy. Therefore, because of the renewed interest in X-ray energy in CT imaging, the issue of energy and imaging needs to be summarized. In this article, we describe the basics of physical characteristics of X-ray attenuation with materials and its influence on the process of CT imaging. Moreover, the relationship between X-ray energy and CT imaging is discussed for clinical applications.

Purpose: Although the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) currently used in the field of medical X-ray CT is utilized for local image evaluation in a linear system, it is not used as a comprehensive evaluation index for an entire image. Additionally, since X-ray CT cannot produce a noiseless image for obtaining the signal power required to calculate the SNR, it is impossible to calculate SNR precisely even applying the conventional method. To resolve these problems, we propose SNR*, which is a new method for calculating the estimated value of SNR that can evaluate an entire image even when the original image cannot be obtained., Methods: First, we obtained SNR* using the signal power and noise power calculated respectively from covariance and the difference in the pair of observed images, which are noise-containing images scanned under the same imaging conditions. Next, we verified the error and the accuracy of SNR*. Third, we demonstrated the behavior and accuracy of the SNR* applied to the actually observed image., Results: In the verification experiment, the relative error of SNR* concerning the true value was 0.06% or less, and the coefficient of variation value of SNR* in the demonstration experiment was 0.015 or less, which denoted the accuracy of SNR*., Conclusion: The proposed method realizes SNR measurement even in cases in which only observed images can be obtained and original images cannot be obtained, such as X-ray CT images.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to estimate the eye lens dose during the handling of radiopharmaceuticals and to validate the requirement of X-ray protective goggles in nuclear medicine., Method: Simulated eye lens radiation exposure (3-mm dose equivalent rate) was measured using a radiophotoluminescent glass dosimeter (RPLD) positioned at distances of 30 and 60 cm from 99m Tc, 111 In, and 123 I radiation sources. Reduction rates were evaluated for the following means of radiation protection: X-ray protective goggles (0.07-, 0.50-, and 0.75-mm lead equivalent), a syringe shield, and a lead glass plate., Result: 3-mm dose equivalent rates without protection were obtained at 6.13±0.13 µSv/min/GBq for 99m Tc, 23.08±0.19 µSv/min/GBq for 111 In, and 11.07±0.11 µSv/min/GBq for 123 I. Reduction rates for each source were over 90% for the syringe shield and the lead glass plate. The 0.75-mm lead equivalent X-ray protective goggles decreased the 3-mm dose equivalent rate by 68.8% for 99m Tc, 60.6% for 111 In, and 68.1% for 123 I., Conclusion: Although the estimated eye lens equivalent dose during the handling of radiopharmaceuticals did not exceed the threshold dose, our results suggest that 0.75-mm lead equivalent X-ray protective goggles are needed to reduce the exposure of the lens while handling 99m Tc, 111 In, and 123 I radiation sources.

Purpose: In the revised Regulation on Prevention of Ionizing Radiation Hazards (April 2020), the equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye was lowered to "100 mSv in 5 years and 50 mSv in 1 year." It is necessary to reduce occupational exposure in the healthcare sector. The purpose of this study was to facilitate comparison with the equivalent dose limit in an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) examination by measuring the scattered dose in an X-ray room as an individual dose equivalent., Methods: The scattered dose was measured by dosimeters positioned in a grid pattern in the X-ray room. The dose rate was measured with and without the use of a protective cloth (0.25 mm Pb equivalent) suspended around the X-ray tube extending to the patient. The dose reduction rate of the material was evaluated during the simulated ERCP., Results: The maximum dose rate at the position of the surgeon performing an ERCP inspection in the standing position was 2.9 mSv/h (3 mm dose equivalent rate) at 150 cm from the ground. The number of ERCP examinations to comply with the equivalent dose limit of the equivalent dose of the lens of the eye without the protective cloth was 28 per year., Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that individual dose equivalent measurements in the X-ray clinic may facilitate comparison with the equivalent dose limit.

It is not easy to measure the half-value layer (HVL) of CT because it is necessary to place the X-ray tube position fixed. The aim of this study was to experiment the new methods of HVL measuring of CT using a custom-made lead slit. The custom-made lead slit method allowed the HVL measuring of CT while the rotation of the X-ray tube. The error of HVL value using the custom-made lead slit method compared to the conventional method was within 6%. The custom-made lead slit method can enable to measure the HVL of CT easily without the X-ray tube position fixed.

Objectives: Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of four X-ray beams (90 kV with 0.15-mm Cu filter, 90 kV with 0.2-mm Cu filter, 120 kV without filter and 120 kV with 0.2-mm Cu filter) in CsI-flat panel detector (FPD) radiography for lung cancer diagnosis was investigated using Monte Carlo simulation., Method: Two billion photons were injected to the chest phantom model (width: 300 mm, length: 300 mm, thickness: 200 mm) with imitated lung nodules (10 mm diameter, CT value: +30 Hounsfield unit (HU), -375 HU, and -620 HU). Individual primary and secondary photon's process (absorption, scattering and penetration) in the phantom and CsI-detector was recorded by Monte Carlo simulation. CNR was calculated using primary and secondary absorbed photon's number in the CsI-detector., Results: CNR of 90 kV X-ray beam with 0.15 mm and 0.2 mm Cu filters was higher to 120 kV X-ray beam because of higher primary object contrast and photon's contribution, and high photon's absorption to CsI., Conclusion: By Monte Carlo calculation, it was verified that 90 kV X-ray beam with 0.15 mm and 0.2 mm Cu filters yielded higher CNR to 120 kV X-ray beam.

Three-dimensional structural information is indispensable to understand the function of proteins in living organisms and X-ray crystallography plays a major role in determining the three-dimensional structure. X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), which is intense and femtosecond X-ray pulses, enables us to obtain X-ray diffraction intensity data before the destruction of protein molecules, and is expected to be a technology to obtain dynamic structural information. This year marks the 10th anniversary of SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free Electron Laser (SACLA), Japan's X-ray free electron laser facility. In this review, I describe the damage-free crystal structure analysis, de novo crystal structure determination using single wavelength anomalous dispersion by serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX), and time-resolved X-ray crystallography that have been performed at SACLA.

Photo neutrons are generated from high-energy medical X-ray linacs via photo-nuclear reactions with the materials of target and collimator as well as therapeutic X-rays. Such photo neutrons sometimes make unwanted influences and are not negligible for the aspects of radiation protection and radiation control. In this article, fundamental principle of such photo-neutron generation is briefly explained. The side effects induced by the photo neutrons are summarized. In addition, some techniques of the detection and measurement of photo neutrons are introduced.

Purpose: Accurate positioning is essential for radiography, and it is especially important to maintain image reproducibility in follow-up observations. The decision on re-taking radiographs is entrusting to the individual radiological technologist. The evaluation is a visual and qualitative evaluation and there are individual variations in the acceptance criteria. In this study, we propose a method of image evaluation using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for skull X-ray images., Method: The radiographs were obtained from 5 skull phantoms and were classified by simple network and VGG16. The discrimination ability of DCNN was verified by recognizing the X-ray projection angle and the retake of the radiograph. DCNN architectures were used with the different input image sizes and were evaluated by 5-fold cross-validation and leave-one-out cross-validation., Result: Using the 5-fold cross-validation, the classification accuracy was 99.75% for the simple network and 80.00% for the VGG16 in small input image sizes, and when the input image size was general image size, simple network and VGG16 showed 79.58% and 80.00%, respectively., Conclusion: The experimental results showed that the combination between the small input image size, and the shallow DCNN architecture was suitable for the four-category classification in X-ray projection angles. The classification accuracy was up to 99.75%. The proposed method has the potential to automatically recognize the slight projection angles and the re-taking images to the acceptance criteria. It is considered that our proposed method can contribute to feedback for re-taking images and to reduce radiation dose due to individual subjectivity.

Purpose: A sheet-like X-ray phantom on which thin Iodine is uniformly coated was developed to facilitate the handling of iodined objects used in any X-ray imaging studies., Methods: The most recommendable protocol as follows: (1) prepare undiluted 240 mg/ml Iohexol-based contrast agent and drop around 1.6 g on a horizontal surface. (2) infiltrate the agent into a membrane filter (47 mm in diameter) from the secondary side. (3) one minute later, the excess liquid components should be removed by a softy absorbent paper, and the infiltrated membrane filter should be left until substantially dried., Result: The dried membrane filter can be utilized as a sheet-like X-ray phantom on which the iodine of around 2.45 mg is almost uniformly distributed per 1 cm 2 . However, since the iodine density is slightly higher on the periphery part of the sheet, less than 80% area of the entire sheet is recommended to be used from a viewpoint of the spatial uniformity., Conclusion: In the practical experiments, the X-ray attenuation factor can be controlled by changing the stacking number of the sheet, and the spatial size and form can also be designed by cutting the sheet. This capability is expected to improve the efficiency of any X-ray experiments and quality control works that requires iodined materials.
