- Abstract
This article proposes a hermeneutic of the concept of the common good in the corpus of texts that make up the Social Doctrine of the Church. The introduction points out the diversity of the use of the term in the same corpus of texts and the naivety that exists in limiting the notion to its supposed definition in Gaudium et spes 26. The first part of the paper starts from the analysis of chapter II of Gaudium et spes and shows that the coherence of the theological narrative in which paragraph 26 is inscribed refers to the scholastic and patristic syntheses of the common good. The essential features of these two syntheses, recently recovered by the research, are then made explicit. The conclusion proposes a new hermeneutical basis for understanding the deployment of the notion of the common good in the texts of the pontifical magisterium on social ethics. This conclusion serves as the basis for the second part of the article, which proposes precisely such a re-reading of the Church's Social Doctrine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
