The “pastoral” connotation, authoritatively suggested by John XXIII for the Second Vatican Council, is not without problems. At that time the questions were caused by the fact that a “pastoral” character was placed in the role of paradigm of council works, which was unusual to it according to the dominant ecclesiastic mentality. Bewilderment and expectations moved normalization will and renewal intents. The article retraces the remarkable passages of the dispute which took place during the council and after it in the sign of “pastoral nature” to be honored. The unavailability of an adequate and shared thematization of the term “pastoral” is its stamp. During our final comments pastoral theology is suggested as a character of a pertinent and proper thought to reflect correctly and substantially about the “pastoral” theme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
