The 2012 Internet mini-series The Beauty Inside and the 2015 Korean film based upon it, Byuti Insaideu, illustrate some crucial philosophical questions related to the body, our relationship to objects and the way we engage space. This paper discusses some of these implications in relation to the elusive concept of beauty in contemporary architectural practice.

When catastrophes strike urban centers causing widespread damage to the built fabric, extensive coverage of events usually focuses on the material dimension of destruction and on the ordeal of residents that are displaced to safe locations. Far less attention, however, is dedicated to the dimension of human space, i.e. that dynamic entity connecting places and their inhabitants, exceeding the material constitution of physical space, and describing the existential dimension of lived experience. Human space as understood in this work gathers contributions from several disciplinary fields such as affective science, aesthetics, phenomenology, anthropology, history and architecture. All these studies converge on the centrality of the experiencing subject in the constitution of space, with particular emphasis on the affective dimension of experience. One particularly interesting – albeit so far under-explored – subject is the temporal dimension of affectivity in relation to space: how emotions are re-enacted over prolonged timespans, and if the connectedness of feelings and space is capable of intersubjectively bridging across subjects. This hypothesis is especially relevant to understand the capacities for survival of human space through disastrous events, considering parts that are lost and those that may survive, being hinged to the materiality of places. Archeologia dello spazio umano Quando i centri urbani vengono colpiti da catastrofi che causano ampi danni al tessuto costruito, si presta in genere notevole attenzione alla dimensione materiale della distruzione, nonché al dramma vissuto dai residenti che vengono spostati in zone sicure. Meno attenzione, tuttavia, riceve la dimensione dello spazio umano, ovvero quell’entità dinamica che collega i luoghi ai loro abitanti, eccedendo la costituzione dello spazio fisico e descrivendo la dimensione esistenziale dell’esperienza vissuta. Lo spazio umano, così come viene inteso nel presente lavoro, raccoglie contributi da vari campi disciplinari, come le scienze affettive, l’estetica, la fenomenologia, l’antropologia, l’indagine storica e l’architettura. Tutti questi studi convergono sulla centralità del soggetto nella costituzione dello spazio, con particolare enfasi sulla dimensione affettiva dell’esperienza. Una questione particolarmente interessante, sebbene finora poco esplorata, è relativa alla dimensione temporale dell’affettività in relazione allo spazio, ovvero come le emozioni possano ripresentarsi a distanza di tempo, e se il collegamento tra spazio ed emozioni è capace di collegare, intersoggettivamente, soggetti temporalmente distanti. Questa ipotesi diventa particolarmente rilevante per comprendere la capacità di sopravvivenza dello spazio umano agli eventi catastrofici, considerando quali parti vanno perdute e quali possono sopravvivere, in quanto incardinate alla materialità dei luoghi costruiti.

The two museum annexes by Swiss architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein, both opened in 2016, provide the opportunity to reflect on the very notion of extension. We are not describing the mere incremental logic of adding new spaces to an existing building, rather of accommodating the multifarious forms of expression of contemporary art. Despite their different aspect, program and dimension, both buildings interpret these changes in their architectural structure and the quality of the exhibition spaces. To clarify these similarities, this essay draws from contributions from analytic aesthetics exploring the statute of art and its performativity in relation to the visitor.

This paper analyzes the exemplar story of Tariq – a minicab driver born in London in a family from Lahore – and his gradual change from “English” to Pakistani, from “western” to Orthodox believer. An existential parable marked by three main phases: the construction, elaboration and reconstruction of events, narrations and memories by Tariq; his detachment, if not rejection, from the “western” integration of his brothers; his idealization of the country of origin and “local” relationships to which is added the religious choice gradually acquired as a whole as a new way of life. All this will be analyzed from a performative and procedural perspective of anthropology.

The medical doctor Melchiorre Allegra tells the pubblic authority at 1937, during the fascism, the structure and network of the organisation Cosa Nostra. This paper proposes a relationship between the productivity of the {-nauta} morpheme in Spanish and a series of metaphors that have, recursively, expanded their scope. The analysis takes under consideration studies addressing the processes of word formation from a perspective of diachronic morphology (Rainer 2002; Pharies 2002, 2004), as well as the contribution to the study of neologisms of studies that highlight the relevance of metaphor in the organization of thought and everyday communication (Lakoff and Johnson 1980) and allow to address them in relation to social representations (Rodríguez Salazar, 2007). All sources are written texts representing different varieties of Spanish, with special attention to the peninsular and argentine varieties. Online searches were used to identify examples of particular words and lexicographical works (DRAE, DEA, DUE, DVUA, VOX and those integrating the Nuevo Tesoro Lexicográfico de la Lengua Española [online]) are also considered as secondary sources.

The paper considers the concepts of uncertainty and risk and their new configuration in the globalized society. Drawing on an analysis of ethnographic situations rooted in the history of anthropology as well as on the interpretation of a criminal event committed in Italy, the work aims at working the concepts of risk and vulnerability as social categories, which is possible to face through a set of cultural practices. In this perspective, the paper emphasizes the figure of the mediator as a cultural “performer”: a social actor who organizes cultural complexity and builds patterns of inclusion through social participation. The capacity to mediate cultural diversity may turn risk and vulnerability themselves into driving forces for social change in the contemporary society.

Crisis Communication: models and case studies. We often read of crises or scandals involving companies and governments. Nonetheless, the study of the phenomenon is still not very investigated or limited to cases of social denunciation. The aim of this report is to overcome the static model, news and consequent scandal, by analyzing the structure of a crisis and the dynamics involving key stakeholders, the media and the public opinion. The analysis tells us that the parts collide, splitting the public, both on the newspapers and the social media. The new proposed model is confirmed by four case studies, both political and corporate. These are, in order: Barilla. No pro-gay commercials, Nestlé and horse meat, the call of Vendola to Archinà, Cancellieri and the case Ligresti. Case analysis was performed on a sample of six national newspapers, noting each article of reference to the case. Which type of environmental communication do the media talk about? How many Natures are being told through the network of texts of environmental communication? Which is the influence of the new media on environmental communication at an expressive and narrative level? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions investigating some distinctive texts. The new possibilities to create meaning through environmental messages will be explored in the light of the evolution of media. At the same time we have to examine the targets of communication's competences and expectations. The requirements for the establishment of environmental communication as a discipline will be investigated starting from the possibilities of sense that the web offers in terms of expression and content.
