The article focuses on the analysis of the Piedmontese onomastics, particularly regarding double surnames such as "Rista" and "Scofon." Topics include the historical significance of the term "rista" related to high-quality hemp preparation, the etymology and evolution of the surname "Scofon" within the region, and the notable individuals and families associated with these surnames throughout history.

During his lifetime, the founder of Opus Dei made two changes to his names: he united the first two into one —Josemaría— and added the toponymic “de Balaguer” to his first surname. This study analyzes the reasons for these changes and the ways in which the founder himself expressed his name.

The present text aims to describe the genolexical patterns most represented in the anthroponymic construction of surnames in Modern European Portuguese (PE), filling the gap in this domain of lexical formation. In this way, it becomes possible to complement the remarkable knowledge available about Portuguese surnames in the medieval period (Soledade 2012) and about the configuration of family names over time, whether in the history of the European Portuguese (Vasconcellos 1928, Monteiro 2008, Silvestre 2021) or in that of the Brazilian Portuguese (Rodrigues 2016; Simões Neto & Soledade, 2018). After a brief presentation of the theoretical-methodological framework that holds this research (section 1.), section 2 displays the configurational schemes in which Portuguese surnames are inserted and section 3. is devoted to their most salient themes. The morphological patterns of European Portuguese surname's construction, namely those involving derivation, composition, pluralization, and (de)patronymic suffixation, are described in section 4. The conclusions are presented in the final section. The analysis of empirical data (collected in https://nosportugueses.pt/pt/apelidos/, a specific database accessible online), still documented in the XX Century, reveals that there is no dissociation between the genolexical patterns of surname construction and those of the common language, in derivation as well as in composition. The most recruited affix resources are those that best codify the thematic-conceptual motivations that govern the construction of surnames, namely in the domain of suffix evaluation or in that of "relation" suffixes.

The place name Speranzella in Carlo Bernari's novel signifies the author's penchant for evocative and symbolic titles, a trend also observed in his other works within the 'Trilogia napoletana'. These titles encapsulate Bernari's portrayal of Naples as the 'paese delle anime' (the land of souls) rather than just 'dell'anima' (of the soul), thus emphasizing its significance to all inhabitants. Through an exploration of unpublished letters between Bernari and his publisher Vallecchi, discussions regarding the choice of the novel's cover are examined, shedding light on the significance of the repeated mention and personification of 'Speranzella' within the narrative. Giovanni Della Casa's blame poem Sopra 'l nome suo ('About his Name'), Grazzini's response with In lode di Giovanni ('In Praise of Giovanni'), and Doni's Cicalamento ultimo ('The Last Chattering') of the Zucca ('Pumpkin', in prose) all center on the name Giovanni. Despite the scant prevalence of onomastics among various burlesque themes, the emergence of three texts dedicated entirely to the same name within a short span is notable. Firstly, it's essential to clarify the significance of the phrase essere Giovanni ('being John') during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. In French, the transcription of proper names is sufficiently complex to contribute to the expressiveness of character names. This article ex-amines the axiological uses of the orthographic subtleties of onomastics in realist novels (1830-1950). It analyzes in particular the prestigious coloring of the s and y in the works of Balzac and Proust. Through the protagonist's journey from China to Italy, the narrative unveils the profound significance of names in the process of identity reconstruction, as experienced through memory. The Chinese onomastic system is carefully elucidated for readers, providing insight into its cultural nuances. Throughout the story, the evolution of the protagonist is mirrored in the evolution of his nicknames, which reflect both personal growth and societal challenges encountered along the way. As the protagonist grapples with conflicts between Confucian traditions and his dual identity as a Chinese migrant in Italy, the narrative chronicles his quest for self-discovery. This section illustrates and comments on the diffusion – over time and in the territory of Piedmont – of some family names that currently have their epicentre in the region. The article, dedicated to the Fauda type, continues the analysis of surname forms inspired by the clothing lexicon that we started in the previous issue. The study of variants and suffixed forms highlights the specificity of local semantic developments. The wealth and possessions of Roman senators in the imperial period consisted predominantly in land property, as emphasized by Pliny the Younger (epist. 3,19,8). It is mainly epigraphic documents that give us information about the location and sometimes extent of senatorial land ownership. Especially in Asia Minor there is plenty of evidence, of which Helmut Halfmann already compiled quite some in 1979. Since then many new testimonies have been discovered and published. Apart from that, further, earlier published evidence for the land ownership of senators whose origin was not in Asia Minor can be added. However, a systematic study of senatorial land ownership in Asia Minor as a whole is not yet at hand. The paper provides prolegomena to such a study. I thus give an overview of the extent, distribution and background of senatorial land ownership in Asia Minor. Rarely is this property so clearly indicated as in the land register of Magnesia (I.Magnesia 122, c2). Usually only the combination of different inscriptions confirms the identification of senatorial landowners. Therefore, I outline methodological guidelines on how to obtain reliable findings from such information. Landed properties could change owners, senatorial estates often passed into the possession of the emperors, which is much better researched. Important questions relate to continuity of ownership within a family and to the circumstances of changes of possession. In this context, I also discuss how the senators came to their property. Especially in the case of senators from other parts of the Roman Empire, the question arises as to why and how they acquired landed property in Asia Minor.

The paper examines some toponyms, which are found in a late-Latin pilgrimage text from the 6th century, known as "De situ Terrae Sanctae". Ancient biblical and extra-biblical tradition is compared with medieval and late-antiquity lexicographical works, such as glossaries, in order to establish a possible history of the semantic and narrative interpretation of each term.

Over the last decades, especially in the Slavic countries, onomastic disciplines and their terminologies have significantly improved. Therefore, in ethnonymics – a study of the names of peoples and, in a broader sense, the names of the inhabitants of physiographic and/or administrative regions – not only necessary terms, but also terms whose purposefulness is at best debatable, have been introduced. This paper examines whether such terms include the Bulgarian term govoren etnonim and the Anglophone term shibbolethnonym, which denote ethnonyms motivated by some speech characteristic of the community in question. The analysis is performed from the standpoint of Serbian onomastics and etymology using appropriate examples from different varieties of the Serbian language: the standard, rural vernacular, and informal varieties of urban environments (i.e. colloquial style and youth jargon or slang). Examples are classified into shibbolethnonyms ʻproperʼ, with more or less clear motivation reflected in the imitation of phonological, grammatical and/or lexical features in the speech of another ethnic or regional community (Švabenzi infrm. ‘Germans’), and ʻfalseʼ shibbolethnonyms, with blurred motivation or meaning which only describe the speech characteristics of the Other (Nijemci stnd. ‘Germans’). We particularly point to the examples which, in addition to speech characteristics, (re)produce positive stereotypes about the greatest closely related nation (baćuška ‘a Russian man’) and regional communities of the same, Serbian or Croatian people (đetić ‘a man from Montenegro’; prika ‘a man from Slavonia’, rođo ‘a man from Herzegovina’). Finally, based on the number and importance of the presented examples, it is concluded that the introduction of the notion in question is necessary, even if one takes the view that yet another onomastic term, in addition to many already accepted, may appear undesirable.

This paper examines the portrayal of significant anthroponyms in both the initial Italian translation (1968) and a recent retranslation (2022) of Witold Gombrowicz's short story titled "Biesiada u hrabiny Kotłubaj" (literally: "The Banquet at Countess Kotłubaj's"). Originally written in 1928, the story features proper names that conceal humorous puns, alluding to the characters' social background or containing polysemic, primarily erotic references. Through a comparative analysis of the two translations, we uncover the changes that have unfolded over half a century in terms of translation strategies, readers' preferences and competencies, and the role of translated texts within the target culture. In order to study the cult of Zeus Nikatôr, six Greek inscriptions (one from northern Syria and five from southern Anatolia) are gathered and commented. The origin, the diffusion and the longevity of the cult are evoked, since it was vivid until the IIIrd century A.D. in the eastern Mediterranean, mainly in southern Taurus (Pamphylia, Lycia, Pisidia and Phrygia Paroreios). Accordingly, also in connection with onomastics and numismatics, the Seleucid memory and the remembrance of Seleucos I are discussed, from Hellenistic times to the Roman Imperial period, and beyond. This article discusses the origin of a series of surnames that are inspired by the dialectal word "griva," which means thrush, a type of bird commonly found in the area. It mentions that the use of the word in surnames became more common in the 14th century, which were adapted to the Italian language and its preference for diminutives, and notes that the distribution of these surnames is mainly localized in the Turin, Italy area, where they take the form of purely Piedmontese surnames.

One of the treatises attributed to the scholar and philosopher al-Farabi is the fascinating single- page manuscript entitled tafsir asma al-hukama, a small document containing a shorthand inventory of fourteen Greek names. Although the authenticity of the attribution is still debated, the treatise itself demonstrates that its author had a strong interest in the interplay of philology and philosophy – a theme that first appears in a remarkable passage in Plato’s Politeia, namely Book IX, 582e. This paper therefore will examine the nature of the tafsir asma al-hukama, especially with regard to the title, which I leave untranslated until the last part of the paper, since the exact meaning of the words in the title forms a major part of my argument. Although the tafsir asma al-hukama is seemingly a very minor text, I believe that it represents a fascinating moment in the history of the dialogue between philology and philosophy. The result of my examination, then, will be a kind of maxima in minimis or hologram on a minor scale. I shall begin with a discussion of the importance of ism in al-Farabi.

This paper aims at analysing the contribution of the naming of characters in the interpretation of Zola-pastiches. Pastiching an author implies repeating the characteristic features of his work with the addition of the self. Onomastics, which is one of the first interpretation keys of pastiches, can be counted among these distinctive traits. Endowed with meaning, proper nouns do not only constitute sociocultural indicators. In the framework of rewriting, they help to identify the pastiches hypotexts, to know the nature of these pastiches as well as their aim which can exceed the mere imitation of the style of famous writers.

This paper addresses the theoretical problem of proper name in linguistics regarding the translation of personal names. The different strategies of onomastic adaptation are focused on following the theory of translation as a fuzzy set suggested by Giuliana Garzone. The study case of how Disney characters' names are translated in Italian is also approached, expanding models and motivations underlying their linguistic choices and creations. The so-called «Fantastic Trilogy» by Andrea Camilleri - Maruzza Musumeci (2007), Il casellante (2008), Il sonaglio (2009) - represents a sort of deliberate divergence from his more usual narrative modes. Here names become the voice of context in which past and present become symbolic memories, which are true in that they are nourished by poetic evocations. Women become mermaids, trees, goats: always women who change their nature for love and who undergo their necessary transformation in a shady area, on the border between life and death, between water and land. No name of the officials mentioned on the coins of Cyzicus in Roman imperial period caused such problems in research as that of Claudius Hestiaios: Thus, three different issues can be identified for this name, which, roughly dated, fall within a possible time frame of AD 138-169. It is uncertain in historical research if this one name, which has a different public designation in each of these coin series, refers to different persons or only to one. Up to now, researchers had assumed two identities, but it is also conceivable, that there are three or only one single Claudius Hestiaios. Since each of these issues not only represented the same name with a new official designation, but also an iconographic innovation for the mint of the city of Cyzicus, they deserve additional attention. Some of those new coin iconographies were subsequently established, some remained unique. A precise and comparative analysis of the style and inscription of the three series shall enable a more precise dating, which then, in comparison with epigraphic and historical evidence, allows further conclusions to be drawn about the identity/identities of the person responsible for minting the coins and the actual minting occasion.

The paper demonstrates the current state of research on the presence of Slavs on the island of Crete in the Middle Ages, as well as in the modern times. The basis for the discussion is a new book of Pantelis Haralampakis, published in 2016. There are numerous controversies surrounding the issues of the exact chronology of Slavic presence on the island, the lexical influence of South Slavic languages on the Cretan dialect of Modern Greek, as well as possible traces of Slavic settlements in the Cretan toponymy.

District-names like Casey, in Provincia de Buenos Aires, or Murphy, in Provincia de Santa Fe, are mirrored by their Irish counterparts such as Ballycasey (Baile Uí Chathasaigh, “Casey’s town”), and Ballymurphy (Baile Uí Mhurchú, “Murphy’s town”). This paper explores some of the Irish Gaelic surnames which have not only made the transfer across the Atlantic, but subsequently found themselves immortalised in Argentinian place-names. In doing so, and by examining the corpus of Irish place-names containing these surnames, it attempts to establish a connection back to the native homelands of these Gaelic families, thus contributing to the wider narrative of the Irish in Latin America.

This study addresses a certain category of Romanian verbal idioms based on key terms of Turkish origin. More specifically, we have in mind the thematic groups from which Romanian borrowed the terms, by integrating the respective Turkish loans into phrases copied from old Turkish or created on Romanian land. The onomasiological criterion applied here reflects the areas of contact between the two cultures, in the period of time between the 17th and the 20th centuries.

The essay examines the relationship between the onomastics of anthroponyms in La Coscienza di Zeno and analyzes the profound meaning of the text. In particular, it will be shown that in the plot of the novel, the onomastics supported by textual clues and by a psychoanalytic interpretation, reveals through the investigation of the genotesto (Kristeva) the specularity between the ineptitude of the protagonist and the existential crisis of the man of Twentieth century.

In the context of industrial literature, Bigiaretti made a special contribution by exploring the conditioning exerted on professional and human relationships by corporate mechanisms. Events and characters derive from the author's experience in Olivetti in Ivrea, but give rise to a new and broader reflection on the role of the industry in society. The names of characters and places undergo a screening process with the aim of overcoming the identification of a given production context. Proper names are deliberately anti-rhetorical, but at the same time never trivialized, and express a typification of reality, creating a sort of internal linguistic code that gives the text an additional level of meaning and interpretation. Le avventure di Pinocchio (1883) by Carlo Collodi presents a complex onomastic system that poses a challenge to translators. In this paper we examine the rendering of names in six Spanish translations, published between 1912 and 2019. Using a contrastive and diachronic approach, we compare the solutions adopted not only in the different translations but also within each of them. The paper is the first study of Orengo's onomastics, a subject hitherto neglected despite the growing critical interest for this author, and focuses on La curva del Latte; the analysis of names and nicknames is centered on the choices, always carefully calibrated, often ironic and out of the ordinary, as are many curious characters in the novel. Reference to the memorial album Terre blu, contemporary with the novel, and several collected testimonies, enable the author to distinguish between real and fictional names and therefore to explore the relationship between reality and fiction. In his "Sonetti Romaneschi", Giuseppe Gioachino Belli speaks, not in person, but through a series of anonymous, lower-class characters. Critics have tried to identify those sonnets in which the wily poet hides behind the mask of the speaker to whom he often lends details of his biography and ideas. This paper examines the use of the poet's two names (Giuseppe and Gioachino), their familiar form (Peppe) and his initials (ggb, encrypted in the number 996). The author analyses the texts, showing that on one hand the poet aimed to represent objectively the life of the common people, while on the other remaining aware of his own poetic personality. Cognitive poetics arose at the crossroads between cognitive science and literature. We try here to deal with the myth of Oedipus which has been analyzed over the centuries from many points of view utilizing the means developed by cognitivism. Beyond the different versions of this myth, one of the most important features of it is the importance attributed to deambulation. The feet have in fact a central role both in the etymology of the name of Oedipus and in the riddle of the Sphinx. Two scenes from Sophocles' Oedipus Rex were discussed in their linguistic and metaphorical aspects. Early byzantine inscriptions show that germanic people assimilate their identity to the environment in Constantinople and Asia Minor: They use Greek language, Christian symbols, and imperial titles to present their position in society. Generally, the only hints of a Germanic identity we find in their personal names.Aitherichos, bishop of Smyrna about 450, has a name that can be assigned to Germanic origins only with some doubts. Ourfilas (= Wulfila), documented in a newfound inscription of Pessinous, wears the title of a primicerius. The family of a Germanic sergeant living in Dorylaion has been accustomed to Greek and Latin name-traditions. They got some prominence in their hometowns as euergets of the Christian community. Among the Germanic soldiers in Constantinople the rank in the army plays a major role than ethnic origin. One of the Constantinopolitan epitaphs remained almost completely unnoticed till now, as it is exhibited in the „Germanic National Museum“, Nürnberg.

This paper investigates the subtle play of references related to each character name variation, based on crucial points in the plot. Galateo, the title of the work, derives from the Latinized name of the dedicatee, Galeazzo Florimonte. This is in line with the Ciceronian habit in vogue in the sixteenth century consisting of the use of an anthroponym inserted in the title. Galeazzo Florimonte - bishop of Aquino and Sessa Aurunca, Casa's friend during the years he lived in Rome, whose Libro delle inezie is an essential point of Della Casa's volume - also appears as a real, historical figure. The aim of this contribution is to investigate the names of characters in the theatrical scripts of Neapolitan playwright Antonio Petito (1822-1876), which reflect an evolution from the working class theater of Pulcinella to its middle class equivalent. Antonio Petito expresses his critical position towards the new emerging middle class by means of various linguistic strategies, including the names of the characters. These names are examined in the original manuscripts as well as in the 'new' autograph scripts that are being edited, compared with the old prints and with references to the nineteenth-century lexicography for the Neapolitan dialect. The 'speaking names' are essentially used as a comic device and are functional to the misunderstandings and verbal gags of his social satire theater. The 'caricature names' are a rich series, some of which refer to musicians and players, with a parodic intent towards middle-class theater and the eighteenth-century panorama. The names related to each character and to his/her physical appearance are important, as are the various 'role-names'. On a linguistic level, I give some examples of epithet-names, some created starting from a dialect phraseological use that connotes the character, others deriving from a popular song. I then dwell on the strategies of verbal misunderstanding originating from a name and on the relationships between the name and the role of the characters, highlighting some constants relating to the roles and environment of the script. Taking a lead from a remark made by Pirandello concerning the name of the character, 'Claudio Cantelmo', in D'Annunzio's Vergini delle rocce, already used by the same author in his Trionfo della morte, this paper focuses on a particular kind of onomastic migration, which consists in using the same name for two (or more) characters in different works by the same author. This phenomenon is found in writers as far apart in time and literary genre as Roberto Bolaño and Giovanni Boccaccio, and is usually seen in the light of a 'holistic' or 'suprasegmental' conception of the onomastic strategy of any given author. Right from the title, Ulysse from Bagdad (Paris, Albin Michel 2008), this novel by the contemporary French writer Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, reveals the process of writing a story set in firmly in the turbulence of contemporary life, but whose name and echo of the vicissitudes which the protagonist meets evoke the presence of the ancient Greek epic. The onomastic element constitutes a guide for the reader, enabling him recognize the model underlying the rewrite project. References to the Odyssey emerge on several occasions in the analogies between the circumnavigation of the narrator-protagonist of the novel and the journey of Ulysses. Recontextualization in the modern era is often the keystone that transforms the epic theme into a comic subject. The Homeric hypotext, in Schmitt's rewriting, constitutes a counterpoint that serves to lighten the tragic story of the narrator-protagonist. Only at a certain point in his vicissitudes does Saad assume the migrant name, that of the Homeric hero, behind which he intends to hide his true identity as a clandestine. For the rest of the narrative, and particularly in the conclusion, the narrator-protagonist insists on the differences that separate him from the Greek hero, until he defines himself 'the opposite of Ulysses'. But through the Homeric hypostasis, Saad's story also benefits from a mythologization process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beneath an apparently traditional and realistic structure, Boris Pasternak's opera summa is a strongly symbolic novel whose plot develops through suggestion and epiphany. The Name is one of the privileged modes which expresses the book's archetypal substance. Pasternak is at ease in the world of onomastics, because he is the interpreter of two great traditions that are intertwined in his person: on the one hand, onomatodoxy, name-worship (imeslavie) and the discussions on the Name of God and on the other, the mythological school with its twentieth-century precursors (the Marrism that so much influenced Olga Frejdenberg, Pasternak's cousin to whom he was very close). The paper focuses in particular on Hamlet (a fundamental figure in the Pasternakian imagination), on Saint George (after whom the protagonist Jury Živago is named) and Magdalene, whose reverberation spreads throughout the novel and bridges the gap between the heroine Lara and the poet Marina Cvetaeva. This paper focuses on the variation of the names of the principal characters of the four books constituting the Neapolitan Novel by Italian writer, Elena Ferrante. This variation is essential in the construction of the complex and layered identity of Elena Greco and Raffaella Cerullo. The onomastic stages that the two girls go through, in fifty years of Italian history, highlight their relationship with the various identities, strongly desired or fiercely opposed, which they assume in the course of their lives. The paper analyses the onomastic variations of the main characters of El cielo árido, a novel by Emiliano Monge. During the course of the novel, the protagonist - Germán Alcántara Carnero - changes his name with the changing of the events that he becomes involved in; at the same time and with similar dynamics, the names of men and women whose existence is linked to that of the protagonist also change. For the creation of these names - which we might call 'biographical' - Monge resorts to audacious univerbation procedures, leading to fanciful syntagmatic names. By analysing these names, the paper will identify the morphological and motivational processes that led to their formation, as well as their translation in the Italian version of the novel (Cielo arido). On the basis of the peculiarities that emerge, the analysis will highlight how Monge's naming processes configure, within the fictional onomastics, a sui generis typology of 'speaking names': namely descriptive names that vary with the changing of the events and roles in which the characters are involved, and therefore narrative names (or narrative allonyms), which replace and alternate with each other and distributed functionally throughout the narration so as to amplify the reader's empathic processes. This contribution integrates the studies of the language used in Stefano D'Arrigo's novels, and focuses on the much less studied Cima delle Nobildonne, published in 1985. This novel, the epigone of his literary career, is characterized by a dry, scientific, almost anonymous language. The significance of the title lies in the need to hide the anthroponym that inspired the narration, that of the only female Pharoah of Ancient Egypt, Hatshepsut, which conceals «the mystery of the universal placenta». All the characters reveal references and riddles that once again highlight the peculiarity and uniqueness of the Messinese writer. Antonio Delfini (1907-1963), regarded as a minor writer, «unknown» according to his own ironic definition, was the author of prose works, short stories, articles, essays, even of a Manifesto per un partito conservatore e comunista and, not least, of some papers partially published in 1982 by Giovanna Delfini and Natalia Ginzburg under the title of Diari (1927-1961). In such a fragmented, elusive production, proper names play an important role. In the context of the 'Scapigliatura' movement in the region of Piedmont, the figure of Achille Giovanni Cagna is particularly interesting: a self-taught and enthusiastic writer, he discovered his poetic vein thanks to the fortunate encounter with Giovanni Faldella, after the «worrisome beginnings» reported by Contini (1953). This paper aims at stressing the onomastic relationships in the works of these two authors, highlighting the evolution of their repertoire and the changes in the naming practice. Autograph corrections approved in the subsequent edition of the Bozzetti and the critical thinking documented by the epistolary exchanges, help to assess the progressive abandonment of clichés typical of sentimental literature in favour of a more disenchanted observation of truth. The funerary stele of the centurion from the liburna Lucusta, Liccaeus, son of Veius, is exhibited in the lapidarium at Osor (Apsorus) on the island of Cres (Crexi). It has been published several times but no publication took into account all available data concerning its site of discovery. Liccaeus and his heir Dabalus, son of Tritus, did not belong to the indigenous population of the island, but may have been from the region of the Delmatae. However, Liccaeus must have been a distinguished person at Apsorus, since he had been awarded a public place for his burial. His tombstone was found at Osor and not in Punta Križa, a village some 15 km south of Osor.

Leggenda privata (2017) is the latest in a series of autobiographical writings by Michele Mari. The novel is the factual narration of the author's childhood and adolescence, documented by family photos, but is also the narration of a fictional and fantastic situation of writing, where the reader is involved in live recording. In particular, the narrative framework is structured almost like a personal essay that engages dialogically the norms and potentials, opportunities and risks of a theory of autobiography. The purpose of this article is to explore the limits, the difficulties, indeed the impossibility of autobiographical writing in Leggenda Privata, which instead verges towards a complex autofictional strategy. The analysis is focused on the narrative framework and the onomastics, and the consequent theoretical questions that they raise, namely the definition of the literary genre and the identification of the subject. As the search for a proper term to identify this new form of writing confirms that Mari's novel does not easily fit into the norms of the autobiographical genre, the multitude of names attributed to the protagonist reveal the difficulty of narrating a unitary identity for the subject. In the present paper we propose to analyze the occurrences of the prepositions in the Romanian anthroponymic structures in relation to the situation in other Romance languages: French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. Our research aims to establish the typolo gy of the anthroponyms, focussing on prepositional occurrences in those onomastic structures and to classify the compound anthroponyms into several structural patterns, taking into account their components (the lexical – grammatical classes the preposition combines with) and the place of the preposition in that structure (in initial or medial position) etc. Starting from an inventory of compound anthroponyms containing prepositions, the present research seeks to highlight the specificity of Romanian anthrop onomy: a great number of prepositions functioning as anthroponymic components as well as a wide range of combinations at the level of structure.

Not much is known about the pre-Roman inhabitants of Emona and their descendants, therefore it is all the more important to collect all available evidence. Epigraphic documents from the Ig area are abundant, containing a large selection of indigenous personal names, which, in contrast, are rather scarce at colonia Iulia Emona, but not as scarce as has been assumed. The tombstones with indigenous names in actuality represent 10.7% of all Emonian grave monuments with identifiable names. At least eight monuments with epichoric anthroponymy can be regarded as having been undoubtedly discovered at Ljubljana. The Emona–Ig areas were closely interdependent in the pre-Roman period and it was only with the foundation of a Roman colony at Emona that the earlier connections and identity of the pre-Roman inhabitants of Emona were forcibly disrupted, relegating the majority of them to a marginal existence. However, there were some who managed to integrate themselves into the Roman society, earning enough money to erect a funeral monument for themselves and their families. This was the case of Buio and his wife Lasciontia, as well as of Enno and his wife Cetetiu. There were native families who were given citizenship, transforming their personal names into a gentilicium, as, for example, the Vibunnii. These names and social connections of their bearers shed a most interesting light on life in Emona before it became a Roman city, as well as on various means of integration, when the former inhabitants had to live side by side with the newcomers.

This article is a study of the ancient Mesopotamian literary text known as the 'Cuthaean Legend'. This Naram-Sin legend is known from several versions in the extant cuneiform corpus of texts (Westenholz 1997). The names of Anubanini and members of his clan, the main protagonists, have remained puzzling in several respects. The present contribution seeks to establish the reading of these names, making use of conventional cuneiform collation and analysis as well as digitial image processing. This is followed by an onomastic discussion of these names, relating them to aspects of Mesopotamian religion, literature, ethnnology, and demonology.
