The growing assertiveness of the ‘New Woman’ inspired a number of speculative fictions on what the future would look like if women ruled over men. Future gynecocracy was also imagined in Romania in the interwar years. For example, Ion Talpă rewrote in his 1937 novel Prin rotogoalele de fum (Through Smoke Rings) the Hebrew story of humankind’s fall in order to narrate through myth how women will prevail over brutish men. The resulting order is based on all-female sociality, including sexual matters. Women treat degraded men as animals in the all-woman society of Talpă’s ambiguously dystopian narrative, which features lesbian sexuality as a matter of course. This work is innovative for its use of Modernist metafictional devices in order to suggest how subjectivity determines the alternate eutopian or dystopian possible endings of the novel, thus undermining its apparently masculinist message.

La fantaisie consacrée à une nouvelle invasion musulmane de l’Europe et visant donc un « danger vert », parallèle au « danger jaune » (et au « danger rouge » intra-occidental), produisit quelques intéressantes manifestations romanesques en France et en Espagne entre 1871 et 1939. Conjointement à des récits conventionnels signés par Danrit y Rubio Coloma, certaines œuvres eurent recours à des genres discursifs documentaires dans le but de doter ces fantaisies guerrières d’une vraisemblance et d’une crédibilité plus grande, comme l’historiographie (fictive) de Spronck ou le reportage journalistique de Rubió. Ce dernier publia en France Le Réveil de l’Afrique (1936), qui aborde le thème de l’invasion future depuis l’Afrique à partir d’un point de vue tolérant, très actuel, et une forme qui exploite avec habileté les discours factuels, au service de la fantaisie spéculative et de la réflexion géopolitique.

after the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, literature resumed its previous course, at least in some of its modes, such as the scientific romance. one of its first examples in the postwar period is a beautifully written book that reflected, in form of a speculative parable, the contemporary conflict. this is Cecilio Benítez de Castro’s Los días están contados (1944), a novel in which a story of a total war on another planet follows another story of appalling violence that takes place within a primitive society isolated in the French Pyrenees, both reflecting the conflict then raging on Earth. Warlike cruelty as an inherent feature of sentient beings is thus underlined from a clearly pacifist perspective that emphasizes the tragic universal dimension of violence, in time and in space.

The double dimension —documentary and artistic— of historical writing has been virtually overshadowed by the emphasis on the scientific nature of the discipline and its subsequent expulsion from the literary canon from the nineteenth century onwards. Fictional or imaginary history then appeared as a way to safeguard the literariness of history as a formal gender, using the rhetorical discourse of historiography to achieve an effect of historicity in texts that are, however, clearly fictional, and which often have a satirical or cautionary intent. Nevertheless, most of them convey first of all considerations on the evolution of humanity, and on its History. Examples of this genre are relatively abundant and can be classified into several thematic types. This second part of the study focuses on the prospective history.

It would be a complete «revolution» (etymologically a turn-around) if death were defeated and the deceased returned to the world as they were, in the flesh and with their own individuality, instead of coming back as reanimated monsters. This fantastic possibility is usually described as having revolutionary existencial and societal effects, since the society and the emotional lives of the living is usually transformed through the contact with the returned, whose very presence seems to alter the meaning of life. This paper provides an overview of resurrection stories by international writers, from Giacomo Leopardi to some modern classics, such as Tudor Arghezi, Érico Veríssimo, Marcel Thiry, Angélica Gorodischer and Robert Silverberg, as well as by others less well known, in a variety of fictional works on this matter, especially in the fantastic, but also in the speculative mode.

En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, muchos de los jóvenes intelectuales españoles novecentistas sintieron la necesidad de vivir en el extranjero para mejorar su preparación desde una perspectiva cosmopolita. Varios marcharon a Londres, donde se familiarizaron con las instituciones y la cultura británicas, las cuales dieron luego a conocer mejor en España. Entre los productos culturales aclimatados por ellos, destaca el género del scientific romance, cuyo maestro reconocido era H. G. Wells. Varios escritores españoles, tales como Miguel de Unamuno o Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, también cultivaron por entonces esta modalidad literaria, pero serían tres miembros de los intelectuales del llamado “grupo de Londres” los que produjeron las primeras manifestaciones auténticas y bien acogidas del scientific romance español, a saber, Sentimental Club (1909) de Ramón Pérez de Ayala, El archipiélago maravilloso de Luis Araquistáin y La jirafa sagrada (1925) de Salvador de Madariaga. Estas obras manifiestan una tendencia especulativa y satírica que recurre a una ironía que podríamos calificar de británica, al efecto de transmitir un mensaje de libertad intelectual. Su fusión de pensamiento, humor e imaginación razonada en un marco ficcional renovador son típicas de la mejor literatura de este grupo, cuya expatriación fue beneficiosa no sólo para su formación intelectual, sino también para la modernización y universalización de la literatura española contemporánea.

Como secretario de la Legación española en Rumania, el poeta y ensayista novecentista Ramón de Basterra desempeñó una intensa labor diplomática, tal como se desprende de sus despachos diplomáticos. Su estancia en Rumania también le inspiró a uno de los mejores libros que haya escrito nunca un extranjero sobre la nueva gran nación latina, La obra de Trajano (1921). Sus ideas impregnan también otros dos textos suyos desconocidos, los cuales constituyen asimismo buenas muestras de la prosa muy culta de Basterra: su discurso como representante español en la ceremonia de inauguración de la Universidad rumana de Cluj y el último artículo que escribió, el cual vio la luz póstumo en una revista hispanorrumana de Bucarest. Ambos textos se recuperan en este trabajo.

En su libro juvenil Nu (1934), Eugène Ionesco intercaló varios breves intermezzos independientes, entre los cuales destaca el titulado El trébol de cuatro hojas («Trifoiul cu patru foi») por su cuestionamiento humorístico del pensamiento lógico, paralelo al ejercicio de desacralización de la crítica que caracteriza a Nu, pero con una intención inconformista clara en contra del nacionalismo y las políticas totalitarias que estaban llevando a la guerra. El absurdo de lo narrado contrasta con el tono estrictamente objetivo de su escritura al servicio de una parábola de la historia real, cuya eficacia resulta quizá mayor por su presentación en forma historiográfica. Así, «Trifoiul cu patru foi» se enmarca en el género muy poco estudiado de la historia ficticia, esto es, el conjunto de textos de ficción que recurren a las técnicas de escritura de los libros de historia, dentro de cuya serie esta obrilla se distingue por su originalidad y tensión ética.
