The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF, Reading, UK) represents the best source of daily forecasts at global level. This paper provides an overview of the Centre: forty-year-history, mission and international success. With an annual budget of about 55 millions £, ECMWF continually improves its supercomputers operating speed (up to 200 Teraflops) and modelling techniques to predict future weather (up to about 2 weeks ahead, but extended forecasts are also produced for monthly and seasonal timescales). Few case studies underline the key role of technology and scientific knowledge behind weather forecast, although often their contents are taken for granted. Finally, the analysis outlines some perspectives for the future of meteorological forecasts and related studies (increasing global models spatial resolution from 9 to 1-2 km in the next future).

In November 1966, without warning, Venice was hit by the most serious flood ever recorded in its history (+194 cm). The rare combination of several adverse weather conditions, led to prolonged gusts of south-east wind (Scirocco), powerful swells in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea in front of Venice lagoon, and to powerful storm waves. Starting from the meteorological data of that time, the article aims to revisit the forecasts according to modern modelling tools (ECMWF). Although the lack of complete data, results demonstrate that modern forecast tools would have been able to predict such disasters, raising the alarm at least six days early. The article also stands that, despite the extensive damages to cultural and economic heritage, the severe event could have plagued Venice heavier in case of higher astronomical tide. Future challenges deal with a sea level rise at 2100 ranging from 0,3 to 0,6 m, up to 1 m. Artificial mobile dams (MOSE) could protect Venice only in the early period but they do not represent a long term solution.

[IT] Il 2 novembre 1995 l'imbarcazione a vela di 16 m "Parsifal" affondò durante una tempesta di Maestrale al largo di Minorca nel Golfo del Leone provocando la morte di sei dei nove membri dell 'equipaggio. Si analizza la tempesta con differenti modelli numerici meteorologici e di moto ondoso, confrontando i risultati con le misure disponibili da boe e da satellite. Si prendono poi in considerazione le previsioni della tempesta e le informazioni disponibili durante i giorni precedenti all 'incidente. Infine si discute sulla situazione attuale dei sistemi di ricostruzione e previsione del campo di vento e del moto ondoso nel Mar Mediterraneo, nonché sulla distribuzione di queste informazioni al pubblico., Le elaborazioni con il vento ECMWF sono state parzialmente eseguite presso il centro ECMWF di Reading, U.K..
