Abstract

From the mixture of three different disciplinary fields – that of the modern and contemporary historian, the philosophical and epistemological one and, finally, that of storytelling – the course of History and stories of the contemporary world was born years ago at the University of Insubria (Varese), which essentially brought three new features: an analytical attention to the contemporary world, in order to provide punctual reading tools and greater understanding of the present time; the detachment from the Eurocentric vision, favoring the "global history" approach which places history in a planetary dimension; an openly critical and dialectical approach through three hermeneutical keys – philosophical, historical and storytelling – and from the interweaving of historical knowledge and historical narration a complex "network model" is created which makes history infinite and always open to the most diverse solutions and unedited. Abstract

The article describes the changing background of a group of social researchers engaged in studying poverty and vulnerability in Turin from 1980’s to the first decade of 2000’s. Since the early 2000’s the researchers, inspired by Life Course approach, chose to collect the life transitions and experiences of stressful events of people who had fallen into poverty and were receiving social assistance. The «careers» of the poor (primarily women with children) were investigated through a longitudinal analysis based on social service-provided records, questionnaires and life narratives. Focusing on the institutional administration of the needs of poors, offered a new point of view about falling into, and escaping from poverty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to analyze the work experiences of 50 precarious young people, interviewed in a city of Northern Italy, Turin, and in a city of the South, Catania. The subjective points of view, the definitions, the perceptions and the strategies of the interviewees are investigated in relation to the transition to adulthood, phase of the life course (Elder 1995) that they are experiencing in a historical period and in societies marked by work precariousness as a state of generalized and permanent insecurity (Bourdieu 1998), and paying attention to the role of the territorial context. How can living in Turin and Catania change the interpretation that the young individuals give of their own precariousness, the "navigation" strategies of it and the possible "exit strategies" and where instead transversal similarities between the young people interviewed in the two cities emerge? Abstract

How social and structural characteristics influence the choices and therefore the life course of working mothers? This is the research question that this paper attempts to answer. In the theoretical part, starting from Hakim Preference Theory and referring to the relational theory, the author wants to underline which aspects contribute to build the identity of women who have both family and work responsibilities. The empirical part is based on the analysis of 50 in-depth interviews addressed to working mothers in relation to their identities in daily work-life balance. The results demonstrate that an essential element to understand mother identity and their choices about work and family is not only the personal reflexivity of women, but mostly the "wereflexivity"- developed together with their partner.

Abstract

Chains of gold, blood and love: immigrant families and economic life choices between "here and there" - The aim of this paper is to analyze the economic and solidarity practices that characterize immigrant family life. Immigrants’ intimate relationships often extend beyond Italy, and their life course trajectories, constellated by (more or less prolonged) separations and progressive reunifications, pose a challenge to conventional frameworks regarding family exchanges, circuits of help and consumption patterns. Choices such as building a house or raising children, are often made on a transnational basis, considering both sending and receiving context’s resources, limits and constraints. At the same time, re-locating family ties it’s not an immediate choice nor an easy process, and the "myth of return" often shapes immigrant’s imaginated future and hopes, after many years spent away from their home country. Drawing on interviews realized with immigrant parents and teens, we are going to unfold the peculiarity of their experiences, rediscussing some of the more commonly used assumptions concerning the amount, the logics and the directions of family members’ economic exchanges and responsibilities, especially in terms of gender and generations. keywords Immigrant families, family solidarity, transnationalism.

Abstract

In this article, I review the issues posed 20 years ago in my model of the historical institutionalization of the life course. I (a) recapitulate the claim that the life course has become one of the major institutions of contemporary societies; (b) discuss what has been learned in the meantime, both with respect to the dynamics of social change and to how the sociology of the life course is able to conceptualize them; (c) examine current trends toward an erosion of the institutionalized life course and the structural anchors that keep it in place; and (d) focus on life course politics and their effects on the future of the life course.
