1. [The assessment of the incidence of food allergy or intolerance in patients with respiratory allergy]

Abstract

In this study we have evaluated the possible relationship between food allergens and hypersensitivity to grass pollens. One hundred-thirty patients with grass pollen pollinosis and symptoms probably related to adverse reaction to foods were selected. Skin prick test for food allergens was positive in 79 patients (60.7%) Statistical analysis using chi-square test showed a high significant relationship between grass pollen and nuts, peanuts, beans and peas (p less than 0.0001). Elimination diet and challenge test allowed us to identify the responsible foods in 61 out 79 patients (77.2%). Twelve patients were affected by food allergy (challenge test, skin prick test and RAST positive and concordant); 49 patients suffered from intolerance. Possible causes of this high relationship are discussed.

Abstract

The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is a rare disease of unknown pathogenesis. Classical signs include recurrent facial palsy, lingua plicata and orofacial edema. The diagnosis is often difficult when all features are not present at the same time: in the literature complete triads occurred in 25-30% of the patients. We report a case of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome with classical triad of signs in a 13 year old boy. The pathology, clinical features and management of this disease are discussed: the possible role of food allergy or additives intolerance is also examined.

Abstract

Nasal polyposis is a relatively frequent disease of poorly known aetiopathogenesis. In this study the Authors have evaluated the relationship between nasal polyposis and food using elimination diet and the double-blind challenge test. Of twenty-two patients examined, 16 (72.8%) completed the study. Six out of 16 subjects improved when on diet and challenged with specific foods. Two patients were affected by food allergy and 4 by food intolerance. Physical evaluation of nasal polyposis showed an improvement in all 6 patients, while rhinomanometric evaluation showed an improvement in 4 out of 6 patients, after diet. Most patients had an alteration of immunological tests involving IgE or circulating immunocomplexes-mediated mechanism.

Abstract

The aim of this study was the observation of the presence of the "late" phase of obstruction after free run in subjects responsive either to aeoallergens either to food allergens but with withdrawal of food allergens from diet in comparison with control group of children which did not have the food allergens exclusion. The study was executed in February and in June in the same children's group having the purpose to observe the variation of this phase in June with a great pollination of graminacee. The results showed the presence of a late phase of obstruction of magnitude similar to the quick phase which begun from III to VII h. but was no greater than -20% FEV1 fall. The control group showed in many children the fall of -20% FEV1 fall. The group of children responsive to the graminacee with food allergen's exclusion showed in June a greater obstructive late phase in comparison to February but the obstruction never was greater than -20% FEV1 fall.
