The echo is a fundamental feature of Virgilian bucolic poetry, but its treatment in some passages of ecl. 6 and 10 is noteworthy: since in these eclogues a large space is given to the figure (and probably the poetry) of Cornelius Gallus, it is possible to argue that the echo was a theme in his poetry, and that Virgil is alluding to specific passages of it. A confirm seems to come from Prop. 1.18 and 1.20, in which the treatment of the theme has resemblances with Virgil’s eclogues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The repellent and anti-feeding effect of garlic oil was evaluated in laboratory conditions against the bite of Phlebotomus papatasi females. The effectiveness was evaluated by two different laboratory procedures: (i) topical application of garlic oil on five human volunteers, using the "standard cage test", and (ii) feeding sandflies on artificial membranes treated with the compound. Garlic oil showed a significant protection by topical application on the skin of volunteers, being the protection 97% and 40%, respectively at 1% and 0.005% dilution. Garlic oil showed also an anti-feeding effect when tested on the artificial membrane feeding apparatus; the anti-feeding effect was dose dependent, being 100% at 1%. The results of the present study confirm previous observations on the repellent effect of garlic oil against haematophagous arthropods.

Ingestion of foreign bodies (FB) seems to be a relatively common occurrence in certain classes of people. The majority of ingested objects reach the stomach end 80% of these pass spontaneously without complications. However nearly 20% of FB that pass from the stomach result in complication distally such to required a surgical operation. The authors report a case of chicken bone perforation of the ileus, which was diagnosed by surgical operation. The case reported is of interest for several reason. The lack of condition that can predispose patients to accidental ingestion of FB, no specific history of FB ingestion and the impossibility to detect chicken bones on plain radiography.

We have studied the ultrastructure of the epithelium lining the tympanic cavity of chicken, using two embedding techniques. In certain cases, the epithelium was minced in Karnovsky fixative, post-fixed in osmium, dehydrated and embedded in Epon, following the usual methods. No morphologically detectable structures were seen at the level of the epithelium surface. In other cases, the epithelium was immersed in Karnovsky fixative and subsequently in glutaraldehyde (1%) to which, however, tannic acid (1%) was added; the specimens were then osmicated, dehydrated with Epon and embedded in polar Epon mix. This method was sometimes used to study the alveolar surfactant, since this makes it possible to preserve its phospholipid fraction. The epithelium, in this way, is seen to be covered by an electron-dense material made up of thin, intertwined tubules. The hypothesis formulated is that the tubules are related to the presence of surfactant substances.

Histones were prepared and purified from chick embryo, chick and chicken liver nuclei. The comparative analysis of these histone preparations, fractionated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, indicates that histone fractions of chick embryo, chick and chicken livers are respectively identical and they comigrate with calf thymus histones.

The alterations induced in the lymphoid and epitelial cells of the Bursa of Fabricius in chicks exposed at different doses of gamma rays mainly occur during the interfase. The extent of these alterations appears reduced in comparison with that observed in the chick thymus treated in the same way.

The extent of osteocytic osteoplasia has been studied in laying hens fed for seven days a hypocalcaemic diet and returned to the commercial laying ratio. The microscopic examination of the femur shows the presence of newly formed bone matrix on the wall of osteocytic lacunae, much more numerous in the experimental animals than in the controls. The physiological significance of the finding is briefly discussed.

A procedure for the isolation of osteoclasts from the heterogeneus population of medullary bone and marrow cells is presented. Cell suspensions were prepared from medullary bone of laying hens by mechanical dispersion. Following an osmotic shock and two 90 min unit gravity sedimentations, fractions highly enriched in osteoclasts were collected and subsequently cultivated in MEM with FCS. Ara C was added to the cultures for 48h to remove all the cells entering the mitotic cycle. The advantages and the possible applications of the method are discussed.

In the dog, rat and chick, phosphocreatine-Na has not caused, from an experimental point of view, significative modifications of the cardiovascular- and respiratory-apparatus, of the reactivity of the cardio-regulator centers, of the baroreceptorial carotid-sinus and glomus reactivity, of the gangliar-, muscarinic-, histaminergic-, dopaminergic-, beta-adrenergic- and serotoninergic- vasomotor reactivity; only the vasomotor reactivity of a constrictive-type induced by epinephrine, nor-epinephrine, occlusion of the two common carotid arteries, hypertension and by BaCl2 is moderately reduced. It is interesting to note that the hypotensive response evoked by adenosine was augmented.

The nucleic acid and protein content has been evaluated in lymphoid cells from the thymus and the Bursa of Fabricius of chicks exposed to different doses of radiation. A different response to radiation damage of the two cell populations is suggested by these analysis when compared with ultrastructural data.

A brief review of the literature on chromatography in forensic haematology is followed by a report of the results obtained by using ascending one-dimensional thin layer chromatography in specific blood diagnosis.

An A strain influenza virus isolated in Turin during the winter of 1974-75 was antigenetically related to the A/Port Chalmers/1/73 strain and dominant with respect to it. In addition, it was dissimilar and antigenically distant from the A/Scotland/840/74 strain.

Chickens of different ages will be submitted to periods of non-eating of 2 to 10 days. The non-eating causes a constant lowering of the body temperature which, in the 10 days old chickens, is 4-5 times higher than in the 3 months old ages. To an higher diminishing of the temperature it corresponds an higher loss percentage of weight. In normal conditions the temperature tends to increase from morning to evening, while during the non-eating period it diminishes. With repeated non-eating periods the colling increases. The difference between young and old animals would depend on differences in quantity of their basal metabolism (lower in the old aged) and on the different availability of energetic material in reserve (higher percentage in the old aged).

Preliminary observations have been made concerning some ultrastructural aspects of the choroid neurons in organ-cultured ciliary ganglia. Reactive nuclear as well as cytoplasmic modifications have been described. They consist mainly of nuclear dense bodies, arrays of smooth endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, clusters of condensed mitochondria. These modifications would confirm the existence of an interaction occurring between the neurons of the ciliary ganglion and their target organs.
