Abstract

Già da vari decenni si è affermata nella comunità scientifica internazionale la consapevolezza che le Ricerche Ecologiche a Lungo Termine (LTER), che si svolgono sulla scala pluridecadale, sono uno strumento indispensabile per comprendere la variabilità naturale degli ecosistemi nel tempo e per determinare le relazioni fra le loro componenti biotiche e abiotiche. Dagli anni '90 si sono sviluppate e consolidate a livello globale le reti di siti di ricerca LTER. In questo contesto internazionale, nasce e si sviluppa anche la rete LTER-Italia, comprendente 25 siti terresti e acquatici con 80 stazioni di ricerca, distribuite su tutto il territorio nazionale. Il ruolo delle donne nella costituzione e nel coordinamento della rete italiana, nella gestione dei siti e nelle attività di ricerca è stato ed è di grande rilevanza. L'osservazione dei fenomeni naturali richiede competenza scientifica, rigore e notevoli energie, sia per la raccolta dei dati sia per la loro interpretazione. Storie di persone e progetti di ricerca dimostrano che, accanto a queste qualità, ve ne sono altre, altrettanto necessarie e spesso trascurate, che tendenzialmente appartengono in misura maggiore al mondo femminile: la capacità relazionale, la pazienza di perseguire obiettivi a lungo termine in un percorso spesso accidentato, e la sensibilità nel riconoscere i limiti umani nell'interpretare fenomeni intrinsecamente complessi e non lineari.

Abstract

A diagnostic-therapeutic protocol for colorectal haemorrhage is suggested. The Authors underline the need to remove inflammatory foci when a perforation of the colon occurs; furthermore, in the acute obstruction due to colorectal carcinoma a resection followed, when possible, by an immediate anastomosis is recommended.

Abstract

On the basis of a group of 175 patients affected by liver cirrhosis and submitted to side-to-side porto-caval shunt, we have examined the presence of hypersplenism in 49.7% and its changes after splenectomy. In order to find out a suitable method to value the changes of the platelets, we observed platelet survival in seven patients either before or after porto-caval shunt. The results obtained encourage in affirming that: 1) Hypersplenism improves after a simple shunt. 2) Hypersplenism is not severe even if it persists with an open shunt. 3) The possible onset of shunt thrombosis worsens hypersplenism. 4) Platelet survival is surely effective in the study of hypersplenism.

11. [Indications for and comparisons between transduodenal papillostomy and choledochoduodenostomy].

Abstract

Biliary lithiasis is still a subject of great interest. The aim of surgical treatment is removing common bile duct stones and assuring a good biliary outflow. In this study the authors report their experience in the surgical treatment of common bile duct stones and the indications for transduodenal papillostomy (PST) and latero-lateral choledochoduodenostomy (CDA). The results are similar to those in the international literature and are surely good for both the procedures. Papillostomy is the procedure of choice, unless there are specific contraindications, in the treatment of common bile duct lithiasis for the following reasons: good immediate and long-term results, low incidence of postoperative complications, prevention of recurrent lithiasis. Choledochoduodenostomy, when clearly indicated, offers good results and, when the anastomosis is large enough, also has a low incidence of postoperative complications. Finally PST and CDA are not alternative procedures but present precise indications. The authors stress the possibility of combining these two techniques, in selected cases, with good results.

The authors report a case of chronic splenic tuberculosis. They underline the diagnostic difficulties, notwithstanding the remarkable progresses in radiological technics, essentially related to the rarity of this tubercular site and they outlined the exact surgical indication to the splenectomy.
