Abstract

Cork oak forests (Quercus suber L.) are one the most interesting forest ecosystems in the western Mediterranean Basin. The aim of this technical note is the presentation of the results of a recent survey carried out in the Calabria region (southern Italy) on the current distribution of cork oak forests. At present, there are few isolated forest stands, often small, on both coasts and in some inland areas of the region. In the past the cork oak forests in Calabria were much more widespread; however, the results here presented can support suitable conservation, management and, where possible, the economic valorization of the remaining cork oak stands.

Abstract

Models of stand volume and biomass estimation based on LiDAR data for the main forest types in Calabria (southern Italy). The AlForLab project is part of the Cluster MEA (Materials Energy Environment) addressed to the Calabria Region. Estimating the main dendrometric variables of Calabrian forests using models based on publicly available remote sensed data is one of the main purposes of the project. This paper describes the procedures used to develop several thematic maps (raster and vector) of timber volume and phytomass to be used in planning and management activities at both regional and forest property scale, as well as for felling plans, logging projects etc. We used public LiDAR data at medium-low resolution (1.6 pts m-2), acquired on about 90% of Calabrian territory in the frame of a national remote sensing programme of the Italian Ministry of the Environment. Field data from the second National Forest Inventory (INFC 2005) on 311 sample points were used for model calibration, as well as new field data acquired specifically for AlForLab project on 143 angle count samples. A series of regression models to predict volume and its corresponding aboveground biomass (dry and fresh weight) were developed and digital maps at different spatial resolutions were produced, as well as their estimate uncertainties. These models and their mapping products are also an important part of the new-establishing forest Decision Support System CFOR. The adopted models, though based on the same mathematical equation, have specific coefficients for different species and groups of species, according to a forest type classification system compatible with the fourth level of Corine Land Cover. In this way it is possible to apply the models without accessing more detailed forest type maps. All estimation methods and procedures are consistent with national forest inventory models, and with the other new tools proposed by AlForLab project to estimate timber volume, such as the regional tariffs and the field sampling inventory procedures. R2 adjusted values (for models at the highest typological detail) are between 60% and 85%, whereas uncertainties of timber volume estimate (ESS%) range from 25% (for main forest species) up to 50% (for less spread forest types). All processing steps to produce digital maps were performed on open-source environment (R and QGIS).

3. [Effects of chronic administration of nifedipine on echo-Doppler parameters of left ventricular filling in hypertensive patients].

Abstract

This study aimed determining the chronic effects of nifedipine (N) on left ventricular filling in 25 patients (mean age 55) with mild to moderate arterial hypertension. M-mode, B-mode and pulsed Doppler measurements were performed at baseline, after 30 min from administration of sublingual N (10 mg) and after 6 months of therapy with slow release N (max dose: 60 mg die). Acute and chronic N reduced significantly both systolic (p less than 0.001) and diastolic pressure (p less than 0.001). At the end of the treatment with slow release N, and septal wall thicknesses had a slight but significant decrease (p less than 0.01). Diastolic and systolic dimension were not modified. Left ventricular mass index decreased significantly from 141 +/- 34 to 130 +/- 31 g/m2 (p less than 0.05). The Doppler-derived diastolic filling indexes (peak E, ratio peak E/A,E deceleration) were abnormal at baseline, and had a significant increase after sublingual and chronic therapy. Changes in left ventricular mass index and diastolic filling indexes were not correlated. A significant correlation was found between peak E changes after acute and chronic N administration (r = 0.732 and p less than 0.001). The results of this study demonstrate that both acute and chronic administration of N modify transmitral flow velocity pattern, suggesting that, in hypertensive patients, left ventricular filling abnormalities are partly dynamic and reversible. Our findings also demonstrate that acute N effects may predict the chronic results.

Abstract

Changes in R-wave amplitude (delta R) during treadmill test were studied in 84 coronary artery disease (CAD) patients and in 150 normal subjects. The evaluation of ECG recordings (CB5 lead) was carried out by a computer program. At maximal exercise, R-wave decreased by 2.1 +/- 2.8 mm in normal subjects, while in CAD patients mean delta R was significantly lower (0.4 +/- 1.7 mm). When the evaluation of delta R was performed at comparable heart rate and work load values, no significant differences were observed between normals and CAD patients. Using as criterion for a positive test an ischemic ST segment depression greater than or equal to 1.0 mm, the diagnostic sensitivity was 66.7%, while the specificity was 94.0%. When an increase or no change in R-wave was taken as evidence of an abnormal response, sensitivity and specificity values were 57.1% and 65.3% respectively. After a critical review of different parameters able to affect delta R, the difficult physiopathological evaluation and the poor diagnostic reliability of delta R were emphasized. The different heart rate and work load values attained by normals and CAD patients proved to be a further confounding factor in delta R comparison between the two groups.

Abstract

To assess the diagnostic value of continuous ambulatory ECG in exercise angina pectoris, 49 males (mean age 52, 1 years), with exercise ischemic ECG changes and positive coronary angiography were evaluated. Ischemic ST-changes were detected by ambulatory ECG in 47% of those patients; most of these ST segment displacements were asymptomatic and a lot of them occurred at rest. In order to assess the specificity of ambulatory ECG, 90 healthy subjects (47 males and 43 females, mean age 43,6 years), were also evaluated 8.9% of these subjects developed ischemia like episodes of ST segment deviation. We conclude that in exercise angina pectoris the ambulatory ECG allows to recording silent ST segment changes, in spite of a poor diagnostic sensitivity. The low specificity of ST segment depression recorded by ambulatory ECG must be also emphasized.

Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the acute effects of nifedipine on left ventricular filling, examined by Doppler echocardiography in patients with arterial hypertension and normal left ventricular systolic function. Twenty-seven patients with mild to moderate systemic hypertension, and 18 normotensive subjects were studied. Pulsed Doppler, M-mode and B-mode measurements were performed before and 30 min after sublingual nifedipine administration (10 mg). Peak E, peak A, area A, area E, ratio area A/area E, E deceleration and E acceleration time were measured. Before administering nifedipine, some of these diastolic filling parameters were significantly different in the hypertensive patients as compared with normal subjects. After nifedipine, in patients with arterial hypertension, peak E and area E increased significantly (p less than 0.01), while ratio peak A/E and ratio area A/area E showed a significant decrease (p less than 0.001). No significant changes were observed in normal subjects. The result of this study demonstrates that the acute administration of nifedipine modifies transmitral flow velocity pattern in hypertensive patients, suggesting that the left ventricular filling abnormalities are in part dynamic and reversible.
