Architectures for health have a crucial role in collectivity: according to international ranking scores (for example, CEOWorld Magazine’s Health Care Index), in Italy, there are very advanced and well-functioning healthcare services, even though many facilities are old and obsolete, unorganized, dilapidated, and sometimes unsafe. It has been estimated that 60% of facilities have been built more than 40 years ago. Recent studies suggest that the service life of hospitals should be set around 60 years; after reaching this age, the structure must be redesigned. The present contribution analyses this “rule of thumb” in relation to its impact on user perception. It adopts a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) method to assess the importance users attribute to the quality of the structure and the personnel working there. Specifically, 9 criteria have been selected, including extrinsic and intrinsic features not directly associated with the abovementioned issues. With this approach in mind, we analyzed the 10 best Italian hospitals’ structures and the quality of treatments. The contribution highlights a significant methodological gap in identifying the relationship between building characteristics and their effects on the service, which are often treated as separate. Thus, the research proposes an innovative method by placing users at the center of the evaluation of priorities. This is particularly crucial in healthcare facilities where all the individuals (patients and staff) and the systems’ processes affect each other. This research line has several possible results; here, it preliminarily involves questioning the 60-year-old threshold for providing highquality services in hospitals.

Introduction: COVID-19 patients survive in isolation with stringent measures of infection containment, leading to anxiety, fear, stress, loneliness, and depression. Music is recognized as useful to promote multiple health outcomes, including anxiolytic effects, pain-relieving, and relaxing effects that favour well-being and social interaction in healthcare settings. Objective: This study aimed to determine the impact of a pre-recorded music-based intervention on the music perception in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Music appreciation, evoked emotions, and self-reported effects were explored and compared before and after music-based intervention, also considering the gender of the patients. Methods: This prospective study consisted of a pre-recorded music-based intervention administered to 272 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 by piping the music into rooms of inpatient medical area. Pre-recorded musical pieces of were selected by a music therapist considering specific formal and parametric characteristics, with the purposes of distraction, entertainment, relaxation, and emotional support. The patients’ opinions were collected using an ad hoc self-report questionnaire and a short data survey that followed the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) guidelines. Results: Music resulted to be the preferred entertainment activity during hospitalization by 84.6% of patients, with 96.6% of them expecting a positive effect and a very high grade of usefulness attributed to music before hospitalization and even higher afterwards. The music intervention significantly changed the patients’ perception of music from everyday life to hospitalization (p

La letteratura presente è stata vagliata mediante la formulazione di diverse stringhe di ricerca: PubMed ((“Osteoarthrosis” [MeSH]) AND (“physiotherapy” [MeSH] OR (“rehabilitation” [MeSH] OR (“exercise” [MeSH])), Scopus, LILACS e Trip Database (“Osteoarthrosis” AND (“physiotherapy” OR “rehabilitation” OR “ exercise”)) e su PEDro è stata utilizzata la stringa “Osteoarthrosis AND Rehabilitation”.

Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive bacterium that is ubiquitously present. It is often involved in gastrointestinal infections and food poisoning, but it can rarely cause serious non-gastrointestinal tract infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. The pathogenicity of B. cereus is predominantly derived from the production of tissue-destructive exoenzymes, including hemolysins, phospholipases, and proteases. Here, we present a case of bacteremia due to B. cereus in an elderly patient, admitted to the emergency room for respiratory failure and rhabdomyolysis after a fall. The microorganism was detected through blood culture and identified using the MALDI-TOF technique. Despite the rapid start of antibiotic therapy, laboratory data have highlighted how this bacterium, through its virulence factors, can be lethal in the case of rhabdomyolysis, worsening the inflammatory response and subverting the host-microorganism relationship in its favor.

The project presented aims to restore the historical and artistic context of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice and the correct representation of the Giorgio Cini Foundation and its collections in the Wikimedia environment, in order to improve its visibility in a digital perspective. The focus was the description of their cultural heritage with particular attention to that preserved in the Palazzo Cini Gallery, adopting the Wikidata platform and thus in the form of Linked Open Data. The project was carried out between February and March 2023, during a residency grant at the Foundation itself. After identifying the resources related to the context of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, evaluating the quality of the information and the reliability of the sources cited, if present, new elements were created such as people, institutes, works of art and bibliographic resources. Through the creation of cultural datasets it has been possible to semantically return the entire historical-artistic heritage in a diachronic manner, at the same time creating new tools that may be used by researchers for future digital projects.

The city of L'Aquila is characterised by a variety of cultural heritage, both monumental assets, such as churches and noble palaces, or minor buildings, such as the many civil houses, which represent the historical evolution and changing material and immaterial cultures over time. This heritage is enriched by the public areas the citizen recognises as their own and in which daily life is conducted in its multiple aspects. Among these, a central role is played by Cathedral square, which represents a public space that synthesises the evolutionary history of the city, incarnating its collective identity values. This place, the scene of multiple events, has undergone numerous transformations. The digitisation and three-dimensional reconstruction work matured as a result of scientific research based on the principles of Heritage Interpretation, which favours the dissemination of scientific knowledge. A digital application has been developed that exploits the communicative potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies to make the different settings of main square between past and present accessible in immersive and desktop mode, thus enabling the main architectural transformations that have taken place over time to be visualized. App based on VR technology are capable of narrating a broad audience about the architectural evolution and environments over time, facilitating the production of images that recount moments from the past, thus helping to promote the city's tangible and intangible heritage.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.31.2023.14

The correct modeling of the interest rates term structure should definitely be considered an aspect of primary importance since the forward rates and the discount factors used in any financial and risk analysis are calculated from such structure. The turbulence of the markets in recent years, with negative interest rates followed by their recent substantial rise, the period of the COVID pandemic crisis, the political instabilities linked to the war between Ukraine and Russia have very often led to observe anomalies in the shape of the interest rate curve that are difficult to represent using traditional econometric models, to the point that researchers have to address this modeling problem using Machine Learning methodologies. The purpose of this study is to design a model selection heuristic which, starting from the traditional ones (Nelson-Siegel, Svensson and de Rezende-Ferreira) up to the Gaussian Process (GP) Regression, is able to define the best representation for a generic term structure. This approach has been tested over the past five years on term structures denominated in five different currencies: the Swiss Franc (CHF), the Euro (EUR), the British Pound (GBP), the Japanese Yen (JPY) and the U.S. Dollar (USD).

The contribution intends to focus on the UNESCO recognition, in 2001, of the Opera dei Pupi, and on its inclusion, in 2008, in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, following Italy's ratification of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Reference will be made to the theatrical activity of the 'Figli d'Arte Cuticchio' company and association, directed by Mimmo Cuticchio. In retracing, therefore, the assumptions and implications of these important events, we will make use both of the reflections that emerged during the dialogue with Maestro Cuticchio himself and of an interview that I made, for this contribution, with Elisa Puleo, Mimmo Cuticchio's wife and company administrator. This article analyses the Italian Army’s demographic composition during First World War. The focus is on the number of soldiers employed and their age structure at different stages of the conflict. The work also aims to evaluate the possible consequences of the demographic evolution of the corps on the quality of troops. The average age of Italian soldiers in July 1915 was 23.8 while in October 1918 rose to 27.4. The call to arms of younger and younger soldiers has not been sufficient to balance the mortality of the birth cohorts fighting since the beginning of the conflict and the growing involvement of increasingly older cohorts having as a result the increase in the average age.

Hepatitis E is a disease sustained by RNA viruses, which have four different genotypes, all of which are responsible for acute forms of hepatitis. Genotypes 1 and 2 infect only humans, causing epidemics mainly transmitted by contaminated water, while genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic, and the infection is linked to the consumption of raw or undercooked meat or meat products. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotypes 3 and 4 have been detected in domestic Suidae, considered the asymptomatic reservoir of HEV, and in wild animals such as wild boar and deer. Despite scientific studies that have highlighted the presence of HEV in cured meat products, such as pork liver sausages, the viral persistence in the different production steps of curing has not been evaluated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the persistence of HEV genotype 3 during the different curing and storage times of experimentally contaminated pork liver sausages using biomolecular methods. The sausages tested positive at all curing and storage times. This study confirms the potential risk attributed to pork liver sausages in HEV transmission. However, to guarantee an efficient risk assessment, future studies will be performed to correlate the presence of HEV RNA with infectious viral particles.

The move towards a future green planet requires that we all learn to live and work in sustainable ways. Teacher professional learning is very important for innovation and sustainability in our education systems. The competent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is fundamental to achieve some sustainable development objectives through the training of new generations. From our survey of newly appointed teachers (responsible for active citizenship training) emerges the awareness of the role of AI in the ecological transition and in the development of a circular economy, the failure to apply AI in current teaching-training programming and the need to be trained on the use of AI and the risks of its improper use.

This article examines the connection between early scientific ideas and It-Narratives in Britain over the long eighteenth century. A set of It-Narratives - fictional texts narrated by, or centred on, non-human entities like things or animals - will be read against the attempt to detect the voice of natural things by a number of early-modern experimental and natural philosophers. It will be argued that, although causal links are hard to prove, there is a degree of epistemic vicinity between these early scientific ideas and It-Narratives. In particular, it will be shown how in both disciplines fiction helped contemplate the possibility that non-human knowledge is more reliable than human-derived one.

There are excellent research papers in the field of visual studies that examine the relationship between war and images. This paper has other and additional aims. The first is to examine not so much how war is transferred from the ground to image production, but how war, as intrusion of the real, forces a general reflection on image techniques. The second is to examine whether there is an instance of art that is somehow different from the instance of the mere image, which is always related to something that manifests itself in war, and which, especially on the occasion of a war, invites a broader reflection on existence, judgement and the world. The paths taken for these investigations are rooted in the idea that a (political) theory of art cannot be reduced to an internal classification of image theory, since it investigates aspects that go beyond the definition of the image itself.

The Heston model is one of the most used techniques for estimating the fair value and the risk measures associated with investment certificates. Typically, the pricing engine implements a significant number of projections of the underlying until maturity, it calculates the pay-off for all the paths thus simulated considering the characteristics of the structured product and, in accordance with the Monte Carlo methodology, it determines its theoretical value by calculating its mean and discounting it at valuation time. In order to generate the future paths, the two stochastic differential equations governing the dynamics of the Heston model should be integrated simultaneously over time: both the one directly associated with the underlying and the one associated with variance. Consequently, it is essential to implement a numerical integration scheme that allows such prospective simulations to be implemented. The present study aims to consider alternatives to the traditional Euler method with the aim of reducing or in some cases eliminating the probability of incurring unfeasible simulated values for the variance. In fact, one of the main drawbacks of the Euler basic integration scheme applied to the Heston bivariate stochastic model is that of potentially generating negative variances in the simulation that should be programmatically corrected each time such undesired effect occurs. The methods which do not intrinsically admit the generation of negative values of the variance proved to be very interesting, in particular the Transformed Volatility scheme.

The paper reports the results of training experiences in the field of education in forensic and biomedical sciences carried out during two editions of summer schools. Two simulated serious crimes, involving dummies used as victims, were prepared for practitioners in outdoor places. The scenes simulate a suspect murder case of homicide with staging and a corpse concealment with dismembered human remains found into a clandestine grave, respectively. During the simulations, laser scanning technology was applied to reproduce the outdoor crime scenes in order to verify the capacity of the innovative technique as advantageous tool during educational and forensic training. Judicial inspections conducted during the simulation provided preliminary physical evidence, in the fields of forensic medicine, forensic geology, and engineering, highlighting the importance of the multidisciplinary approach. These experiences, through the use of the laser scanner that allowed for the recreation of virtual environments in which practitioners were able to confront crime scenes, demonstrated how such an approach can be useful in education and training activities.

The multidisciplinary approach has become an almost indispensable requirement in the examination of the scena criminis, especially in complex cases involving different professional profiles within the biomedical and forensic sciences. In recent times, innovative methods have been joined by the possibility of using three-dimensional laser scanners, capable of obtaining virtual reconstructions, very useful in analyzing outdoor or indoor crime scenes. In the present paper, three case studies regarding simulated indoor and outdoor crime scenes were analyzed, applying a virtual reconstruction based on a survey and acquisition of “point clouds” by using a laser scanner Leica BLK360, managed by means of the software Leica Cyclone. Victims were simulated by two hyper-realistic dummies produced by the Lifecast Body Simulation. The first crime scene regarded a suspect homicide case of a man found hanged to a metallic rod indoor, inside a room; the second crime scene regarded a homicide case of a woman, suspected to be victim of sexual assault, found indoor, on the floor of a corridor in a palace; the third scene regarded an outdoor place located in the hills of the Peloritani Mountains, simulating a crime scene where a homicide was committed. The advantages and disadvantages of virtual three-dimensional acquisitions in relation to forensic purposes were finally highlighted. The successful outcome of the scans proved the true-to-life reproducibility of virtual targets, with the possibility of easier interactions, the possibility to measure specific parameters, adequate simulations, and the essential “crystallization” of physical evidence. In the next future, it will be important improving the procedure in order to obtain protocols with high quality standards, able to ensure that the acquired data will be considered valid with evidentiary effect in judicial trials.

Educational tourism is a growing industry, that includes a variety of niches. Among these, language tourism involves language and culture schools for foreigners that also provide hospitality and tourism services, including tours and excursions, field visits and cultural initiatives, and experiential workshops. These realities, if located in rural contexts, can represent a growth factor for rural areas and an opportunity for cultural exchange between tourists and local communities. To better understand forces and factors influencing this industry, this study describes the case of two Italian language and culture schools for foreigners which also offer tourism services in a rural area of the Marche Region, near the city of Macerata. Through semi-structured qualitative interviews and by applying the theoretical model of Porter’s Forces, the case presents an overview competitive environment, pointing out strategic choices and distinctive aspects of the presented realities.

The polarizing attention paid to the bigness debate, referring particularly (if not exclusively) to metropolitan areas and global realms, still tends to overtake the issue of small urbanity. In a country as Italy, where small settlements with a population of less than 5,000 inhabitants represent 69% of Italian municipalities and affect as much as 50% of the national territory, the endemic isolation of small towns and hamlets seems to be finally contrasted: a better knowledge of local dynamics has developed; some policies to struggle the dispersion of inhabitants have been promoted and initiatives to support the return to places and emerging forms of resilient community have been drawn. In this perspective, the case of the 47 villages around Messina is emblematic. For the first time, bottom-up request for a referendum has been held to create a new municipality called “Montemare” which should collect some of these small towns splitted in the northern area of the Peloritan area, affected by conditions of marginality and abandonment as perceived and complained by the inhabitants. Coastal or hilly (as in the case of the “Masse,” the subject of this paper), these hamlets experienced a condition of relative prosperity until the second post-war period and since then they suffered a progressive abandonment. The proposed Messina Urban Plan puts these villages in a new condition of centrality within innovative strategic features and in specific projects of recovery balancing territorial disparities.

This essay focuses mainly on narrative sources that help to understand the peculiarities of prisons (non-ecclesiastical) in Naples from the late 16th century to the second half of the 18th century, trying to foster a comparison between prisons in the various European states in the old regime and later. The condition of prisoners was made more difficult by the obligation to pay ‘diritti’ introduced by the jailers. To the promiscuity, chaos, relative freedom even of having their wives or prostitutes in prison, the Jesuits tried to remedy. Charles of Bourbon will have to address some unresolved problems by responding to an appeal.

This paper examines a selection of poems on nature by Margaret Cavendish, an English poet and natural philosopher active in the mid-seventeenth century. Cavendish’s conception of nature was “organicist”, meaning that all creatures – humans, animals and plants alike – share similar abilities in terms of feeling and reasoning. In this essay, Cavendish’s organicism will be discussed as the philosophical framework of her collection Poems, and Fancies (1653), especially those poems in which beasts, plants or nature herself engage in dialogue with human beings about their relationship with the environment. It will be argued that Cavendish’s choice to give voice to nature works as a fictional strategy to help readers imagine an alternative idea of nature, one different to that of nature as resource that was becoming increasingly widespread with the advent of early modern science. In the final section, it will finally be suggested that reading Cavendish’s poetry through the lens of post-humanism can contribute to present-day discussions on the Anthropocene.

Certificates are structured financial instruments that aim to provide investors with investment solutions tailored to their needs. Certificates can be modeled using a bond component and a derivative component, typically an options strategy. The pricing of certificates is typically performed using the Monte Carlo numerical methodology. Such method allows for projections of the underlying using series of random numbers. The results obtained display an error (standard deviation) that depends on the number of simulations used and on the specific characteristics of the structured product. This work has the objective of minimizing the experimental error, and, consequently, of accelerating the speed of convergence using statistical techniques known in the literature as variance reduction methods. The most popular stochastic dynamics have been analyzed, like the classical Black and Scholes model, the Local Volatility model and the Heston model. Three certificates are analyzed in the paper and they are characterized by different payoffs. The variance reduction techniques, implemented in different programming languages (Python, Matlab and R), are: Latin Hypercube, Stratified Sampling, Antithetic Variables, Importance Sampling, Moment Matching and Control Variates.

The use of non-destructive methods guaranteeing high standards of accuracy, speed, simplicity of use, and low costs may be crucial during judicial inspection aimed to reconstruct the spatial arrangement of crime scenes. Three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning and structured blue light scanning are two modern and advanced technologies widely used in many sectors of the sciences, included forensic sciences. Limiting itself to forensic applications, these technologies may be successfully used for acquiring point clouds in 3D space and reconstruct 3D virtual models of large-, medium-, and small-scale forensic scenarios. These two technologies were applied for reconstructing 3D virtual models from real crime scenes and geological evidence, respectively. Different investigative places and items were investigated and discussed. The research evidenced the advantages of using these modern techniques in order to assist investigators in: i) providing 3D virtual models for reconstructing even complex crime scenes occurred outdoor; ii) reconstructing of the dynamics of events, and iii) individuating possible interactions between the actors of the scene and the surrounding places.

The AI Act provides a risk-based framework for the regulation of Artificial Intelligence, delegating the implementation of essential requirements to harmonised standards. This regulatory approach raises several issues concerning the alignment of standards with regulation’s requirements, the legitimacy of the European standardisation system, and the ability of harmonised standards to ensure fundamental rights protection. This paper discusses and analyses the regulatory approach underlying the AI Act, the main issues surrounding the proposed regulation, and the implications for the AI Act's ability to achieve its goals.

The paper focuses on Norberto Bobbio’s book Mutamento politico e rivoluzione, published by Donzelli in 2021, which gathers the transcripts of his last course on political philosophy. More specifically, the paper is divided into two main sections. The first section concerns Bobbio’s remarks on how philosophers shifted from rejecting political change to legitimizing resistance against power. The second section regards Bobbio’s attempt to reconstruct the history of the idea of revolution, as well as its relationship to the cognate but rival concept of reform. Furthermore, the paper concludes by shedding some light on Bobbio’s own opinion on the reform-revolution alternative, which occupies center stage in nineteenth- and twentieth-century debate on socialism and the strategy for a socialist transformation of society.
