In the standard reference works for Ethiopian and Eritrean studies, one finds a Homily on Holy Easter (CAe 1265) attributed to Gregory of Nazianzus and identified as one of his Orations (CPG 3010). Both the attribution and identification are, however, incorrect. Rather, this Homily on Holy Easter, which is actually attributed to an otherwise unknown John Theologos in the earliest recoverable layer of the Ethiopic tradition, is to be identified as an Ethiopic version of a homily, recorded as CPG 4163.2, attested in two Arabic manuscripts, one where it is attributed to Ephrem and the other where it is anonymous.

In an article published in this journal in 2010, Norbert Nebes argued that ʾbk wdm is an apotropaic formula, which can be translated, for instance in the case of RIÉ 9, as ‘und Waddum ist dein (göttlicher) Vater als Schutz vor einem Widersacher’ (wʾbk wdm [b]n ʿtkm). In contrast, it is proposed here that ʾbk wdm continues the previous list of deity names, as already suggested in 1976 by Roger Schneider. Key to this argument is the distribution of the concluding prepositional phrases bn kl mrʿm, ‘from everyone who is malicious’, and bn ʿtkm, ‘from an adversary’, which only occur in inscriptions that have b-s¹qt, ‘by the protection of’. Thus, the following formula is proposed: b-s¹qt DN(s) bn X, ‘by the protection of divine name(s) from X’.

Review

This article presents a single fragmentary folio that was recently uncovered in excavations at the Monastery of St Antony (Egypt). This folio was discovered in a secondary deposit below the foundations of a church which was in all likelihood constructed in the 1230s. A radiocarbon dating of the folio has returned a date of 1160–1265. Together, these two data make this fragmentary folio the earliest securely datable specimen of an Ethiopic manuscript. This find, thus, provides a new foundation for the analysis of the paleography of the earliest Ethiopic manuscripts, including the gospel manuscripts from Ǝnda Abba Gärima, which contain paleographic features that seem to predate this fragmentary folio. In addition, this find has implications for the regnant periodization of Ethiopic literature and more specifically the history of Ethiopic monastic literature, especially the Zena Abäw. Finally, this folio is among the earliest surviving Aethiopica for the entirety of Egypt and thus provides new information on the relationship between Ethiopic and Coptic Christianity.

Il carattere pragmaticamente marcato degli ordini diversi da VSO in ebraico biblico viene esaminato sulla base della lingua del libro della Genesi. L’ipotesi che l’ebraico biblico abbia un ordine VSO basico, cioè neutro dal punto di vista pragmatico, viene sostenuta facendo riferimento a diversi criteri. Contestualmente viene ribadita l’importanza di studiare l’ebraico biblico tenendo conto di principi di carattere pragmatico e dell’analisi del discorso. L’anteposizione dei costituenti viene spiegata alla luce di due dimensioni pragmatiche: la struttura informativa, e la continuità (o discontinuità) della comunicazione o del discorso. La prima di queste dimensioni viene utilizzata per spiegare diversi tipi di anteposizione a carattere focale, la seconda per diversi tipi di anteposizione a carattere non focale, che viene studiata in maniera particolarmente circostanziata. Tra gli aspetti di quest’ultima che vengono presi in esame vi sono: - il carattere pragmaticamente marcato del costituente anteposto riguarda solo questo, o la frase nel suo complesso? - l’associazione tra la forma wayyiqtol e la sequenzialità e, dall’altro lato, tra la forma X+qatal e la mancanza di sequenzialità; - diversi tipi di mancanza di sequenzialità; - i significati e gli effetti diversi ma, a volte, in parte coincidenti che vengono associati alla struttura x+verbo.
