The paper presents the results of a research conducted from 2012 to 2014 that, using theoretical and methodological categories of the Social Network Analysis, provides a relational analysis respect to the party transformation process. Specifically, the paper examines in depth two regional case studies (Campania and Sardegna), that highlight shapes, modes and actors with (and through) which the parties organize and structure their action along the axis «local-regional», composing relationships with other parties and collective stakeholders acting within the territorial governance system. Many consumers express concern about the ecological consequences of their purchases and go so far as to promote collective action to encourage the spread of practices that address environmental impacts. Among the informal initiatives promoting the culture of sharing and reusing objects, we are interested in the phenomenon of free shops. These activities are characterised by the fact that they are promoted by groups of citizens whose aim is to explore alternative routes to ecological transition, while at the same time proposing a critique of the dominant market model. In this paper, we wanted to highlight the modalities of ecological engagement through the individual and collective trajectories of the people who frequent these atypical places as they reveal the evolutions and contradictions that remain in the transition between social and ecological challenges. This paper has an optimistic attitude about the impact of new technologies, including digital technology, in protecting workers’ collective interests. It distinguishes digital workers from those employed in traditional manufacturing sectors. It goes on to point out that while the physical place (the factory), which facilitated union activity in the former sectors, has disappeared, this does not imply the end of collective interests or the complete fragmentation of employment relations. Examples inItalyinclude the spontaneous assembly of riders working via food delivery apps and collective activities exploiting the potential of the web and of digital platforms. For workers employed in traditional manufacturing contexts, the exercise of trade union rights, especially those under Title III of the Workers' Statute, could be facilitated by the web and by the immediate and generalised access to virtual spaces. However, the paper also discusses whether the current configuration of trade union rights based on physical spaces is obsolete or whether they merely need to be re-interpreted. Finally, the paper briefly reflects on the role of trade unions, which will not be marginalised if they are able to embrace these new technologies.

8. Solidarity and Theories of Collective Action

The concept of solidarity is of central importance to the political sense of collective action. But it is a curious fact that solidarity is virtually unmentioned across the large and growing literature in philosophical collective action theory. Instead, we see discussions of collective action overwhelmingly focus on epistemic conditions and group-level correlates of individual action explanations such as collective intentions, collective beliefs, and so on. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the relationship between solidarity and collective action theory. I will try to answer two questions: (1) What is it about the structure of accounts of collective action that seems to preclude discussions of solidarity and related concepts; and (2) How can solidarity be made to play a useful role in those accounts?

The analysis focuses on the development of the innovative tertiary sector in Calabria, presenting some analysis on the role of innovative tertiary sector in peripheral areas, which have deep-rooted weaknesses, and yet numerous resources that are not duly activated. For this reason, it is necessary to understand what are the variables that activate these resources. This pushes to consider the non-political as well as the non-economic dimensions (Coleman 2005; Granovetter 1985; Ramella 2013) as central to the unfolding of innovation, especially if considered as a collective social action (Trigilia 2007). The method used is qualitative and quantitative. The first part focuses on the local economic structure using data from Istat, the Ministry of Labor, and Aida updated to 2020. In the second part, there is a multidimensional qualitative study, through the analysis of thirteen semi-structured interviews with innovative entrepreneurs of the context. The results highlight a central role of non-political institutions, the structure of the market and of the networks to which they belong, in reinforcing innovative organizational dynamics, which are also useful for others local productive sectors. The root causes of the Italian decline lie in the distortions of collective action, which enhance the perverse behavior of both the elite and the people. The elites are "packs of wolves" that extract income and wealth to the detriment of society, shaping formal institutions. The people cultivate myriads of small special interests, operating as "swarms of locusts", by circumventing and emptying formal institutions. The dualism of wolves and locusts derives from the many atavistic national dualisms and strengthens them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper concerns a case of environmental mobilisation in the Chiese basin, a medium-length river that flows between Trentino and Lombardy. The case seems to contradict the idea that ecological mobilisation is almost absent in semi-rural areas due to cultural and territorial factors. To verify this hypothesis, the socio-environmental mobilisation along the Chiese is compared with that of the neighbouring river basins. We found more long-term and inclusive mobilisation along the Chiese river, and this is due not only to the local identity strength of the river, but also the occurrence of catalytic events that have threatened the sense of dignity and territorial justice of the inhabitants of the Chiese valley. After reviewing the specific literature on environmental mobilisation, we adopted a model of ‘baseline conditions-events catalysts-collective action’ and applied it to the specific case. The history of the mobilisation serves as empirical material on which to test the hypothesis.

New technologies ,Digital workers ,Collective rights ,Collective action - Abstract

COLLECTIVE action ,IRRIGATION ,WATER in agriculture ,FARMERS - Abstract
Institutions help solving collective action problems and common-pool resources need institutions for their successful and sustainable management. However, institutional creation, functioning and changing are also second level collective action problems with no automatic solutions. This paper analyzes institutions functioning and change in users-managed irrigation systems in Valle d'Aosta, a northern Italy alpine region. Irrigation systems represent a complex resource, crucial for the traditional economy of the valley. Although the transition to advanced economy has partially reduced their importance, most of them are still in use and managed by the farmers themselves, with only external help from the region's administration. Nine cases are here studied, and a special focus is directed toward the social elements affecting both agricultural and institutional performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social Innovation ,Politics ,Transdisciplinarity ,Political science ,Collective Action ,Social innovation ,European commission ,Interdisciplinarità - Abstract
This Policy Paper examines the role of Social Innovation in Social Sciences and Humanities. It provides a historical overview of the various meanings of SI in modern times and in European Commission policies. This variety can be visualised on a continuum at the extremes of which figure models oriented to practical-social changes and models oriented to political-social transformation. The recent shift of EC research funding towards the practical pole is problematic. The role of the political, politics and collective action and scalability of SI initiatives and practices deserve significantly more research and policy attention, the paper argues. It makes epistemological suggestions on how to reequilibrate the balance between foci and approaches in European SI research.

The paper presents and discusses the main results of Joint Commitment. How We Make the Social World, the book published by Margaret Gilbert in 2014. The author presents and defends her plural subject theory: against methodological individualism she shows that joint commitment can create a plural subject which is irreducible to its own parts. This idea, already presented in previous books of the author, is discussed dealing with new interesting topics such as collective guilt feelings, love, patriotism. The final section of the paper stresses some of the stengths of the book and shows also some of its weaknesses, such as the need of a discussion of joint commitment within a phenomenology of social stances. Il saggio presenta e discute i risultati principali di Joint Commitment. How We Make the Social World, il libro pubblicato da Margaret Gilbert nel 2014.

| In the last years, the economic crisis heavily hit all the Southern European States, exacerbating well rooted dynamics of impoverishment and precarization. In Italy and Spain, among others, social movements against labour and existential precarity developed and took the streets, receiving a high degree of media attention. Extended abstract: In the last years, the economic crisis heavily hit all the Southern European States, exacerbating well rooted dynamics of impoverishment and precarization. In Italy and Spain, among others, social movements against labour and existential precarity developed and took the streets, receiving a high degree of media attention. In this paper we focus on the movements against precarity in Italy and Spain, in order to analyse their genesis, developments, symbolic discourse and future opportunities. In particular, the paper focuses on the movements’ claims, their self-representation, the structure of alliances and their strategies of action, highlighting the results of the protests and the repertories of discourse and action. In Italy, the discourse against precarity can be divided into three phases: until the mid-2000s, a grassroots network of actors developed, addressing the flexibility of jobs and the fragmentation of the labour market, while the trade unions organized attempts of including atypical workers. The second phase is characterized by the widespread use of the term precariousness outside of the environments in which it was developed, by a massive use of the job’s rights, and the increasing awareness of the difficulties of organizing precarious workers. In the third phase, precarity has become a common reference for workers’ protests and broader activism, and a widespread and legitimate word in the public sphere as well. In Spain, mobilizations against precarity mainly developed in the aftermath of the economic crisis, and especially since 2010-2011, thanks to the action of JSF and, later, of the 15M movement. The claims against precarity are strictly intertwined with the broader claims on the right to housing and the lack of prospects for the youth, as well as to a deep disaffection towards the institutional politics, therefore they have an intrinsic and instant ‘political’ nature. The activists, indeed: seek for the societal consensus and, for this reason, they interact with the media, both grassroots and mainstream; put in place and activate wide networks of mobilization and alliances; and contribute to political experiences, such as Podemos and Ahora Madrid. Movements’ differences are mainly related to their self-representation and action strategies. While in Spain the protests focus on the ‘lack of’ (future, jobs, security), in Italy they refuse a ‘victimization’ discourse, promoting a self-empowerment subjectivity. On the other hand, while in Italy action took place mainly in the field of labour and workers struggle –and the public sphere– in Spain activists went political, by contributing to the 15M movement, Mareas, Podemos, and Ahora Madrid. In this article we analyse the diverse experiences of the movements and highlight similarities and differences.

The article offers information on the creation of models for studying social change taken into consideration the collective action, institutions and social networks. The attempt of searching for the general theory of social change has brought about three kinds of errors, namely nomological prejudice, structuralist prejudice and the ontological prejudice. Nomological prejudice consists of the illusion of searching for the laws of social change. Structuralist prejudice comprises of the research of the invariant structures of change, whereas ontological prejudice generates the research of the "motor" of change.
