In this paper, 1 propose to reflect on how feminine prostitution is regulated in the municipality Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, and the specific configurations assumed by the municipal public health. We will see how, through an updated form of 'classic regulation ', the body of the prostitute is still considered a dangerous vector of infection, and how little attention is paid to women's 'integral health'. The regulation, however, allows registered prostitutes in the city of Oaxaca to enjoy some room for maneuver, at the expense of other sectors of the prostitutional population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses how the relationship between gender, domestic and public space can be seen as a way to reinforce roles or subvert them. In this context, it is essential to show how gender relations are structured socially through urban spaces, especially how limits established by stereotypes of feminine mysticism are understood as a set of discourses and presuppositions about a passive femininity that block the participation of women in the struggle for the city. An international reference framework is constructed to illustrate how different urban struggles demystify this image. Through a case study at Pedregal de Santo Domingo in Mexico City is analysed how they are the ones that often build parallel urban projects and inform against the neoliberal urban transformation that lurks their neighbourhoods.

This paper has as purpose to show how the nationality and citizenship are formal elements that demand the Mexican Constitution to take over any position of popular election to federal level in the Mexican legal order. In this sense, it is worth mentioning that the Mexican legal order does not give a concept about how to understand nationality and citizenship. However, the Constitution establishes the requirements on how to acquire the nationality and how to lose it. Likewise, so that a person has the quality of a citizen has to fulfill the following requirements: to have an honest way of living, and to be 18 years old. Thus, not every Mexican is a citizen, indispensable condition to be candidate to any position of popular election.

Mexico shares two borders with Guatemala and Belize where surface waters are abundant, a situation that enables dynamic relations between waters and boundaries. The border rigidity has traditionally contrasted with profound local transboundary interactions between water linked to socio-cultural dynamics and the multiple circumstances of liquidity. Resulting from more than a decade of research in the area, this paper proposes to analyze different water borders conceived as an integrative duality –rigidity versus fluidity- from a perspective which looks beyond dominant methodological nationalism. Instead of opposing water fluidity and the rigidity of political boundaries, through examples of “transboundary water crossings” and transboundary river basins, the article proposes “water transbordering” as a perspective that dynamically intertwines waters and borders. Finally, it highlights the importance for research to go beyond nationalist, homogeneous and hegemonic visions about rigid borders, which ultimately feeds conflicts and moves towards a perspective that includes local dynamics of waters and boundaries in support a transboundary analysis that moves towards transboundary environmental peace.

While there has been research focusing on security issues in Mexico in the context of the Mexican Drug War and the effects of violence on its population, little has been done to explore the relationship between public-official discourse, political practices and mourning at a societal level. Using the Logics of Critical Explanation (LCE) framework developed by Jason Glynos and David Howarth, and focusing on the notions of mourning and melancholia at a societal level, this paper argues that the conditions for mourning at a societal level have not been met in public-official discourse regarding the security policy and the Mexican Drug War, resulting in subjects experiencing blocked mourning. It views the Peace and Reconciliation Forums as a political logic that seeks to differentiate the approach taken by the incoming López Obrador administration in relation to security strategy formulation and attention to victims and Human Rights’ groups. It also argues that while the forums themselves have some attributes that could pave the way for successful mourning to occur, a comprehensive set of practices needs to materialize that addresses the concerns of violence-affected subjects.

The two main objectives of this paper are to describe acts of intolerance towards religious minorities in Mexico and build an interpretative model of the forms of racism that occur in these acts, focusing on the case of Protestantism. The methodological approach is qualitative and scope of the research is descriptive and exploratory. The results highlight that cultural racism against Mexican Protestants is institutionalized, differentialist, with origins of the violence of identity type (defensive) and social. The findings indicate the need to develop more efficient mechanisms in defense of religious diversity that have been used to date, to aspire to really build societies based on tolerance and, consequently, in the peaceful coexistence of differences.

Objective: This article presents evidence of collaborative work processes in disciplinary scientific production coauthored by a network of experts in electronics and computing by documenting this network’s scientific activity. It is part of a wider study on writing and training trajectories of doctoral students (Carrasco [et al.], 2011; Kent, 2013; Brambila-Limón, 2015; Brambila-Limón [et al.], 2016). -- Methodology: The research took the form of a qualitative study of a group of nine researchers in electronics whose leader has promoted collaborative publication over a period of 25 years. Each researcher completed a personal interview of approximately two hours and bibliometric measures of their productivity were made using the group's institutional platform. -- Results: This article presents data on a group of scientists who collaborate in research and publication as coauthors. The results are presented in four sections: coauthorship; technology; roles and identity; and collaboration. The group, which publishes in English, sustains a higher rate of publication than other Mexican groups in the same discipline: 7.2 articles per researcher per year when conference papers are counted and 3.7 articles per researcher per year when only articles in peer-reviewed journals are considered. Their continuous improvement is monitored by the group leader, who pays close attention to publication lag times of each journal. We confirmed that group members play various roles to support their academic productivity, acting as authors as well as reviewers and evaluators of each article they produce for publication. In a highly competitive research and development field, we propose that group collaboration may be crucial in attaining recognition.

Destination image has been recognised as an influential component of travel decision processes. Although organic sources of information play an important role in shaping destination image, researchers have often ignored the types of sources and the information they deliver. In particular, official websites where government travel advice is given, especially in relation to crime, have been widely excluded from scholarly research. This paper analyses the relationship between crime-related travel advice given by foreign governments and Mexico’s destination image. Qualitative content analysis of official websites from the US, Canada, the UK and Spain reveals that the travel advice given relates largely to the violence and insecurity that Mexico is currently experiencing. “No advisory in effect”, “Exercise caution” and “Defer non-essential travel” are messages commonly found in the governments’ travel advice about Mexico.

In contemporary times, the informal economy is a complex and heterogeneous phenomenon. There is a range of activities performed outside the regulation and control of the States. In this paper we start from the idea that there is a kind of informality associated with the discontinuity provoked by the border, commonly addressed in terms of “smuggling”. The aim is to propose a conceptualization of such informality from theoretical contributions on the informal economy and border. The border region between Mexico and Guatemala and will bring specific illustrations to our conceptual framework.

This paper focuses on the seldom studied poetry of Roberto Bolaño, using "La Universidad Desconocida", the exhaustive compilation published posthumously in 2007. Although Bolaño received wide recognition and many awards for his novels, he defined himself as a poet. In his poetry, we find the same topics and tendencies that he developed in the characters and plots of his narratives. A prime example is "Los detectives salvajes", a novel about a group of young rebel poets in the Mexico of the seventies. Bolaño’s poet characters, as well as his travels, exiles and criticisms of the literary establishment, take on a new light when compared alongside his poetry. this article explores the modes of poetic production as understood by Bolaño, as a way of life outside universities, the literary canon, and any other institutional networks. Instead, his poetic production is marked by the figure of Arthur Rimbaud as the archetype of the cursed poet.

As a result of the contamination of blood supplies, Mexican government prohibited the 'paid donation' (1987) and the country formally joined the framework promoted by WHO and PAHO focused on the enhancement of repetitive altruistic donation. Nevertheless, this kind of donation is still minoritarian in the Mexican Republic and it is largely majoritarian a blood management system that has not received particular attention from the social sciences: the replacement donation. In the article, l describe and analyze the dynamics of replacement donation, following the results of a fieldwork that 1 have conducted in the city of Oaxaca since 2013. In particular I highlight the specificity of this form of blood collection and distribution, based on the empowerment of the families in their search for donors. I pay particular attention to the issues of health inequalities and the difficulties in the access to blood as a therapeutic resource. In conclusion, I discuss the ambiguous position that in the blood-system have the private blood banks and 1 analyze the tools that they use to act as private companies in a context in which the sale of blood and blood products is formally prohibited. The paper analyses the opportunities and challenges that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) presents for Mexican library science education. Broadly speaking, interest in this agreement has centred on economic topics, but it also contains educational clauses that directly or indirectly affect the training of library science students and their entry to the labour market. On the basis of a review of the education-related documents in NAFTA, we analyse the implications of the agreement for higher education, review the opportunities and challenges that it presents for library science studies, and explore some of the actions developed by schools and library science associations in response.

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has the following functions: teaching, research, and the dissemination of culture. It has gained national and international recognition for its achievements, and is currently ranked first in the country and among the best in the international classifications. However, no research performance indicators exist for this university. The aim of the present paper is to assess the performance of university researchers during the period 1995-2003 using a bibliometrical analysis. The empirical data were based on the Web of Knowledge and the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). They were used to assess the degree of visibility of the communication channel used to disseminate the products of scientific research. 9,903 articles were identified which obtained 65,291 citations. Most articles were published in disciplines in the hard sciences: astronomy and astrophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology and physics. We conclude that UNAM researchers have partially overcome the obstacles facing the consolidation of Mexican science as it seeks a wider public.
