ACADEMIC libraries , *UNIVERSITY rankings , *LIBRARY science , *LIBRARY information networks , *LIBRARY associations , *SUSTAINABLE development - Abstract
In recent years, Italian academic libraries have undertaken third mission activities linked to the enhancement of their heritage: library science scholars have already been studying this kind of initiatives, and today the Italian national agency for the evaluation of universities and research institutes (Anvur) considers such actions as a result of the institutional commitment of a university library. A workshop, organized by the Library System of the University of Ferrara together with the Italian library association during the Stelline congress 2022 (Milan, 11 march), analyzed the case study of the bibliotour Storie di libri e palazzi, set up by the University of Ferrara; the workshop also explored new strategic opportunities for the enhancement of academic libraries' heritage, firstly the inclusion of all audiences, with specific reference to Goal 10 ("Reduce inequalities") of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Furthermore, this perspective embraces potentially the entire corpus of recommendations provided by the Agenda. The paper is intended not only to report the main ideas that emerged during the workshop held in Milan but, starting from them, also to suggest building a network of academic libraries, in order to facilitate the communication of third mission initiatives and their public outreach. Therefore, full adherence to the inclusive dimension and the commitment to sustainable development are two new strategic opportunities for academic library activities related to heritage enhancement. AIB has been supporting both strategies for several years, by means of concrete actions, such as the "Maria A. Abenante" Award, as well as organizational structures, like the Observatory on library and sustainable development (Obiss). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POLITICAL participation , *MAP collections , *LIBRARIANS , *QUANTITATIVE research , *LIBRARIES , *LOCAL elections , *ACADEMIC libraries , *GROUP decision making - Abstract
This paper aims to focus on the importance of investigating the value and weight given to libraries by politicians, decision-makers and administrators within their political and administrative activities. The article proposes a reflection on the value given to libraries by some Italian policymakers and a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the presence of libraries within the electoral programs of the Italian local elections (autumn 2021-spring 2022). This study has made it possible to construct a map of the positioning of libraries in the mind of politics. This fact is essential for understanding the context from which librarians and researchers can start to change the perception, often simplistic, of policymakers about libraries, to make them understand the impact that libraries can have on society, and to identify effective and efficient strategic actions. ELECTRONIC books ,ACADEMIC libraries ,LIBRARY materials ,MONOGRAPHIC series ,SERIAL publication of books - Abstract
In recent years, the spread of ebooks has grown exponentially. 24/7 availability, portability, the advanced tools offered by platforms make this product particularly interesting for academic libraries, which are in an experimental phase with regard to the selection and acquisition of ebooks. The article analyzes three platforms (EBL, Ebrary, EBSCO), to find out whether an Italian medium-sized university library can buy foreign titles in electronic rather than paper, and under what conditions. It provides information about titles catalog, business model, features available. The cut is practical/experimental, since the comparison among the platforms is based on a set, used as a representative sample, of 150 monographs, published in the last 5 years by different publishers and purchased on paper. - Abstract
Today electronic databases have become the backbone of many academic libraries around the globe including Ghana. This is largely due to its advantages over the print resources. Libraries spend colossal amount of resources on online databases in a bid to enhance teaching, learning and research in institutions of higher learning. This study was carried out to examine the usage of online databases by faculty members of the University of Education, Winneba. It focuses on only the Winneba campus to address the following objectives among others; explore the awareness level of the databases the university subscribes to and to determine the extent of use and the relevance of the databases by faculty. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study was a survey and made use of questionnaire to elicit data from the respondents. A sample population of 210 was given questionnaires bearing in mind the research questions which guided the study. Data was analysed using frequencies and simple percentages. The results of the study revealed that majority of respondents were aware of the databases though there were few of them who did not know the existence of the databases. It further established that a number of faculty members who utilise the databases, had knowledge of some of the databases and use them mainly for research and other educational activities. However, the results indicated that though faculty acknowledges the importance of the databases to their information needs, there were few hindrances that inhibit their effective use of the databases, these were; no access to the databases outside the campus, often passwords to some databases not functioning, and issues bothering on internet connectivity. The paper ends with recommendations to ensure effective and efficient use of the databases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The world of publishing distribution has increasingly become an object of interest for both industrial production and the readers. The recent past showed that books must be selected carefully not only by bookshop managers for their buyers, but also by libraries for their users. Libraries themselves are examined in their relation with publishing distribution: the paper presents an initial analysis of the process enacted to pursue the goal that each individual title may fruitfully contribute to the growth of the whole library collection. The research considers only the acquisition of print monographs from some of the most important suppliers of both public and academic libraries; with these vendors it was possible to entertain a crucial and essential direct discussion. This paper provides an overview of open education in Europe, focusing on higher education. It begins by considering how the notion of ‘contemporary open education’ has evolved over time. It then reviews the various open education-related initiatives that have been promoted by the European Commission, from the institution of an open education framework to the current development of education policies. It also reports on specific initiatives and makes a series of recommendations about policy design oriented to opening up education. It analyses the relationship between open education and the open science movement, specifically the manner in which open education can be contextualised in the emergent paradigm of open science. Finally, the paper considers how academic libraries should be supporting open education and examines the influence that information professionals can bring to bear in this field.

COVID-19 pandemic , *SEMANTIC Web , *COVID-19 , *DIGITAL humanities , *ACADEMIC libraries - Abstract
Starting from the observation of the reaffirmed centrality that Wikipedia and its sister projects assumed during the Coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, the article presents the Wikiproject Covid-19, in its dual articulation in Wikipedia and Wikidata. In particular, it analyzes the key role of librarians participating in the project, that they assume thanks to their knowledge in the LIS field and in the standardized description of resources through metadata. After a short international review, the paper reports the specific case of the University Library Center of the University of Salerno, where some librarians have actively contributed to the Wikidata Wikiproject Covid-19. Starting from the technical background acquired with participation in initiatives such as Wikicite or international campaigns such as "#1lib1ref" and from previous experiments, through the combined use of various tools and the creation of a rigorous workflow, the librarians have come to process and integrate thousands of data from Wikidata into quality biomedical databases in a relatively short time. The workflow focused mainly on three activities: the insertion of external unique identifiers for authors and scientific journals, the qualification of the items through the addition of bibliographic references and the subject cataloguing of the scientific articles relating to SARSCoV-2 and the related world pandemic. Lastly the essay highlights the limits and the critical issues of the semantic web, of the open collaborative projects and of the specific method used, with some considerations on the librarian's new centrality in the context of open data and on the need to participate in these projects in the in the area of Digital Humanities. TRAINING of librarians , *LIBRARY education , *ACADEMIC libraries , *RESEARCH libraries , *CONTINUING education , *GOVERNMENT policy - Abstract
This paper deals with a few general issues concerning librarians' education and professional refresher training, and was inspired by a meditation on the deep changes that are taking place in the world of academic and research libraries. The subject has recently been addressed in a meeting held in Milan on November 22th-23th 2012 - “Stati generali dei professionisti del patrimonio culturale" (States-General of cultural workers) - promoted by MAB Italia. Also, it has become an hot topic after the recent approval of law no. 4 of January 14th 2013, Disposizioni in materia di professioni non organizzate (Rules on professions not governed by a professional order) which introduces new legal profiles for professionals not belonging to any professional order- librarians included. The paper makes a clear distinction between professional refresher training and higher education, claiming that technological and digital skills are essential for the profession, but have to be grounded on a broader and more structured cultural background that may help librarians to deal with the constant changes that all kinds of libraries are facing over and over today. The essay proposes a reflection on the topics covered during the conference "The privilege of the written word: management, preservation and improvement of personal cards and books" organized by the Department of Sciences of Cultural Heritage of the University of Salerno, with the collaboration of the Library Centre of the University of Bologna, the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Bologna and the National Commission of Special Libraries, Archives and Author Libraries of the Italian Libraries Association. Risks are analyzed, such as those related to the dispersion and fragmentation of materials during the life of the producer, good practices, with the presentation of concrete projects, the approach to new digital technologies. The conference days, organized in sessions, were divided by themes: "Books, papers, maps: the personal workshops of writing and the arts"; "Personal funds in excavation, description and management activities"; "Personal funds between physical space and digital space: the paths of access and enhancement". Part of the event was dedicated to the presentation of the Guidelines on the treatment of personal funds. The publication of the proceedings will certainly encourage new reflections and a remodeling of the same guidelines, also in consideration of the documentary typologies to be treated that were subject of deepening and report during these study days. This paper uses an analysis of the repositories of Spanish universities to identify which institutions contain rare book and manuscript collections. The method used in this analysis involved examining each university on the basis of a list comprising eleven elements. A total of 60 universities were found to have repositories but only 28 (16.8 %) of these contained rare book and manuscript collections. In the light of these figures, which suggest that Spanish university repositories do not generally consider the preservation of rare books and manuscripts to be part of their institutional mission, the paper reflects upon why some Spanish university repositories do contain such collections.

Ten years ago three different university libraries merged to form a single library centre. These were: the library of the Escola Politècnica Superior d'Enginyeria de Manresa, which is part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; the library of the Fundació Universitària de Bages; and the library of the Centre de Suport de Bages, which is part of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. The new library centre was the Biblioteca del Campus Universitari de Manresa (BCUM) and this paper describes the process by which the centre was created. It examines the libraries that were joined together, the ways in which the institutions involved benefited from the experience and the different models created. The paper then describes the actions taken to fully connect the systems managing library users, resources and services, and the structures used to efficiently integrate the existing libraries in the BCUM. In general terms, therefore, the paper analyzes the context and describes the management of each of the phases in the overall process, from the initial planning and definition of the project to the total integration of the systems managing library staff, services, the collection and the catalogue. Finally, the paper includes the accounts of people who were involved, in this ten-year period, in the work of integrating the three centres.

The article deals with the evaluation of papers published in specialized journal of the Humanities area. Assessment techniques, qualitative (ex-ante) and quantitative (ex-post), became a fundamental instrument of the academic research. This paper traces the evolution of the evaluation techniques, describing the different methods for peer-review (a very well known praxis for the exact sciences, while still not used much in humanities for historical, epistemological, and economic reasons). Some experimental forms of peer-review are due to the digital environment and to Web 2.0, and started to be used to set up a new assessment practice for humanities. This so called social peer-review is a more appropriate to humanities, and presents many experimental examples based both on qualitative and quantitative methods. Those methods represent a valid option in order to contribute to the academic and cultural debate, and to raise up the level of the research in Humanities.L'articolo affronta il tema della valutazione dei contributi pubblicati in riviste specializzate di ambito umanistico.

It provides information about titles catalog, business models, features available. The cut is practical/experimental, since the comparison among the platforms is based on a set, used as a representative sample, of 150 monographs, published in the last 5 years by different publishers and purchased on paper.

The article presents the institutional background of Italian State university libraries, from the establishment of the Italian Ministry of Culture to the present day - going through the last decade of the 20th century, when Legislative Decree 112/1998 proposed a new institutional organization of the State university libraries within the Universities. The main institutional and service tasks that State university libraries have to fulfill are supporting learning and research, preserving national heritage and providing proper spaces for public reading. The paper analyses the opportunities of interaction and cooperation with Universities and University libraries, as for-for instance-the purchasing policies (especially with regard to electronic resources) and the users' training and information sessions. Given the increasing compression of human and financial resources that hampers the daily management of libraries, inter-institutional cooperation nowadays is more desirable than ever. If on the one hand the plurality of tasks and functions of the State university libraries reinforces their vitality, on the other hand it adds an extra burden on the daily organisation and service management, because of the difficulty of arranging their human and financial resources and of giving the right space and visibility to their several institutional and service tasks. This paper describes the creation of Florida Universitaria CRAI’s Catálogo de la mujer. Florida is an educational cooperative set up in the region of Valencia in the 1970s, a time when many projects were launched in an attempt to change and modernize approaches to teaching. Since its inception, the values that have underpinned its work have been a management style based on democratic practices, secularism, the promotion of the Valencian language and coeducation, and the application of the Mondragón business model. These values have also shaped the creation of the bibliographical archives belonging to the CRAI-Bibilioteca and the rest of the cooperative’s libraries. Since the first professional training programmes in 1977-1978, the cooperative has adapted the courses on offer to the needs of its public (and also in line with its budget). Florida Universitària came into being in the early 1990s, as an associated centre attached to the Valencia’s two main universities (the University of Valencia and the Polytechnic University). Finally, the language centre was founded in 1994. La Florida is based in Catarroja, a town in the Horta Sud of Valencia, where secondary school studies, language teaching and university courses are taught at three different sites. These centres were created at different stages of the cooperative’s history, building on the original secondary school and expanding to cover the teaching needs of a group of villages located some way away from the city, and responding to the rising demands of the area’s industrial sector.

Libraries provide a stage for learning, creating and sharing experience; and both library services and the information professionals in charge of them are changing with the times, just as our educational systems are, offering us new ways to acquire knowledge. The library at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, has evolved into Biblio TEC: a physical building that is at once an information reference service and a series of spaces designed to facilitate learning and interaction in study-related activities of different kinds. With a surface area of some 17,000 sq. m., the building is divided into six levels of flexible spaces that can be adapted to the needs of individuals, teams and large groups of library users and that maximise the possibilities of private or group study and of learning in general. On this new stage, the librarian's role has also changed and librarians are no longer the keepers of services who decide what is to be used and how; instead, they have become information curators whose mission in this day and age is to facilitate the process by which patrons learn to acquire and use increasing amounts of information.

Part 1 of this paper discusses how to create and manage an academic library chatbot, including the type of statistics that should be kept and the importance of regularly reviewing transcripts. Created in 2014, the chatbot in question has been developed to the point where, on average, it correctly answers library users' questions 70% of the time. Part 2 is an analysis of over 10,000 user-submitted sentences (questions and statements). The analysis used UAM CorpusTool to create layers and code transcripts according to sentence structure, opening and closing statements, showing interest, and types of service and materials requested. While the library chatbot is clearly marked as being a computer program, a number of users regularly treat the chatbot as human and hold long non-library related conversations with it.

Integration of user-generated content with library catalogs is a remarkable point with the developments in web technologies and semantic networks. In the light of these developments, library catalogs are linked with open data resources like VIAF, DBpedia and amazon.com with the aim of bibliographic description via URI based structures. On the other hand "Resource Description and Access" (RDA), as a new cataloging standard, supports libraries for their bibliographic description studies by increasing access points. Furthermore, many initiatives have been launched by countries who would like to keep themselves up-to-date by using and implementing RDA in their library catalogs. In this context, developing catalogers' opinions and perceptions regarding of RDA implementations is of great importance. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the requirements, awareness and perceptions of catalogers in academic libraries in Turkey about RDA implementations. The contents of this paper were originally presented at the international conference FSR 2014 "Faster, Smarter, Richer: Reshaping the library Catalogue", held in Rome, 27-28 February 2014.

Those methods represent a valid option in order to contribute to the academic and cultural debate, and to raise up the level of the research in Humanities.

- Abstract
This study investigated library instruction methods, effect and the challenges in academic libraries using the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) students as the target population. Library instruction is a core activity of the academic libraries that entails educating, enlightening, guiding and helping the library users to identify, understand and utilize library information resources effectively. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population consists of seven hundred and seventy-three 100 level students who registered for Use of Library (GSE 112) course in the first semester of 2015/2016 academic session. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Using a consensus sampling technique, all the 773 students participated in the study during a seminar organized for the 100 level students at the end of the second semester by August 2016. All the questionnaires were retrieved while 643 were found usable representing 83 percent. The finding showed that classroom teaching, library orientation and library guide (X = 3.00, SD = 000) were the methods mostly used while guided library tour (X = 2.53, SD = 667), library and one-on-one mentoring (X = 2.48, SD = 716) were also used to instruct the library users. It also reveal that Ask a librarian, FAQ, library Blog, library Website, Text messaging were not used to instruct the users. The finding also shows that library instruction was effective for identification of books on the shelves (X = 3.78, SD = 416), access and retrieval of information materials in the library (X = 3.67, SD = 471), enable students to cite and reference books with ease (X = 3.11, SD = 874) and turned users into regular library users (X = 3.45, SD = 497). It however, shows that library instruction has no effect on students' academic excellence (X = 3.44, SD = 687). The findings however reveal some of the challenges facing library instruction including non-expository of the program (X = 2.78, SD = 785), inadequate time for library orientation (X = 3.00, SD = 815), non-utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) for library instruction (X = 2.78, SD = 787) and students' lack of interest in library instruction programs (X = 3.56, SD = 684). The study, therefore, concluded that library instruction is an effective means of educating users and creating awareness of available information resources in the library. Librarians should ensure that library instruction impact students' academic excellence while viable methods of engaging and instructing the users in making them effective users and life-long learners be encouraged and explored. Objective: To analyse the web visibility of the implementation of the CRAI model in university libraries. Results: The paper presents qualitative and quantitative data that show how, to varying degrees, most libraries have met the challenge of adapting to the European Higher Education Area, and have increased the presence of the learning process and its support. The CRAI model is therefore visible in the web sites and strategic plans of most Spanish university libraries.

Objective: To analyse the web visibility of the implementation of the CRAI model in university libraries. -- Methodology: To analyse the web visibility of the implementation of the CRAI model in university libraries. -- Results: The paper presents qualitative and quantitative data that show how, to varying degrees, most libraries have met the challenge of adapting to the European Higher Education Area, and have increased the presence of the learning process and its support. The aim of this paper is to propose a technological strategy that university libraries can use to adapt to changes in the learning and research fields. The following are the most significant of these changes. The Web is the new platform for communicating information, and is aimed at both humans and machines. It promotes working in networks and in collaboration. This way of working is generating a new concept of the information unit. This concept reflects the need to represent new forms of publication (text, data, simulations, etc.) in new scientific practices, and changes in the nature of the tools for creating information and the environments in which they are used. Finally, users not only consume information, but increasingly want to participate in generating it (in blogs, the Wiki systems, YouTube, SlideShare, etc.). We describe the implications of these changes for university libraries: the importance of electronic learning, Learning and Research Resource Centres (CRAI), and the new models of communication and scientific publication. In addition, we propose some lines of action to guide libraries’ technology strategies, in accordance with these changes: the new concept of the information unit, interoperability, flexibility and open architecture.

The aim of this paper is to propose a technological strategy that university libraries can use to adapt to changes in the learning and research fields. - Abstract
