Although the European Union encourages the development and promotion of all languages and the respect of cultures as a value in diversity, opposite positions are taken in single countries: France tries to enrich and protect its language also by means of legislation, whereas Italy seems to absorb all sort of foreign words, specially English terms. The paper provides valuable insight into word analysis with particular reference to word-formation, term-creation and the use of synonyms and neologisms; it also gives several examples the user (may it be a student, a translator or simply a European citizen) should be aware of.
