With the growing influence of radical right-wing parties, their main ideas appear more and more freely in the media and institutional circles. By adapting traits from the ideology of the right-wing (often post-fascist) into a globalized context, they put themselves forward as nativists, sovereignists, authoritarians and defenders of traditions. The ideologies of these political formations have also included gender issues within them, and the complex and articulated use of these issues is the subject of this paper. Specifically, we aim to analyze the increasingly prominent role that gender issues play within the ideologies of the Italian radical right wing parties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper first tackles some problems (of genre, chronology and style) related to the anonymous poem preserved in POxy 1794, then offers a thorough commentary on it. The analysis shows that the poem is an example of careful, if epigonal, composition.

Videogames are a fundamental tool in shaping new generations' collective imagination. In particular, videogames usually present limited depictions of masculinity and femininity and, for this reason, offer canonical norms concerning gender identity. The present paper explores narrative videogames as a key medium to indirectly deconstruct gender canons. Specifically, the paper focuses on the analysis of non-conventional female identities in three videogames based on the adventures of three different protagonists that counteract gender standards. Happiness is a right that must be recognized and must be accessible to everyone, because it depends on what social actors are able to do or not do. This seems to distance happiness from the emotional dimension. This paper intends to present data relating to a part of a larger study carried out in 2021. The research investigated the social imagery that revolves around the concept of happiness. The study involved 20 men and 20 women (35-45 years-old) in two web discussions. This paper will try to understand if happiness is an emotion, mood or personality trait and if a gender distinction emerges. The data collected showed that for the study participants, happiness is an emotion. Despite this, a gender distinction is highlighted with respect to the other two images of happiness (mood and personality trait). In the first case, the image of happiness as a state of mind is more common among women. For the men involved in the study, happiness is the result of individual action, it is a characteristic personality trait. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCIENTIFIC knowledge ,GENDER role ,ELECTRONIC textbooks ,TEXTBOOKS ,TELEVISION talk programs ,CONTINUITY - Abstract
This paper focuses a genre belonging to a complex level of LSP communication which can be defined as "intermediate", i.e. the academic textbook. This level plays a central role in granting the continuity of specialised scientific knowledge, as the fundamental requirement for the survival of each scientific field lies in the possibility of recruiting new members through formal (academic) education. Since this latter largely makes use of (and often depends on) this genre, a description of its linguistic features, internal structure, and the way it presents scientific knowledge should necessarily fall within the research trends in LSP communication. The aims of this paper are therefore twofold: 1. to determine the levels of analysis required for the description of this genre and to describe the characteristics of the (neurological) textbook according to those levels, and 2. to interpret such features and thereby investigate whether they may be classified exclusively as didactic or whether other categories are necessary to interpret them. The assumption arising from the analysis is that only some functional aspects can be regarded as didactic while others can only be interpreted as serving the (socially determined) function that this text fulfils in its context of use. The analysis also offers insight into of the differences existing among the various types of textbooks. These can in fact be connected to the way the two functional features of the texts are balanced depending on the specific needs of the addressees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTERSECTIONALITY ,IDENTITY politics ,RACE ,HETEROGENEITY ,MARXIST philosophy ,GENDER - Abstract
In the public debate, on the one hand, the so-called cancel culture (CC) is stigmatised as an attack against the Western tradition and the rationality of dialogue, on the other, it is associated with the oblivion of material issues, substituted by identity claims. These two readings can be opposed by a third that frames the events subsumed under CC in a positive way as 'intersectionality', and a fourth that, while appreciating its purpose, challenges its liberal grammar of rights. CC, identity politics and intersectionality - although they identify both broader and more specific sets of problems - can thus be read as the names that different scholars give to the same dynamics. After briefly reviewing some of the literature on the topic, the paper will focus on the conflict between economic instances and identity, first by recalling some reflections from the Marxist tradition on the subject of 'race' and gender, and then by looking at two contemporary Marxist texts, by Asad Haider and Ashley Bohrer. With a different stance on intersectionality, but criticising economicist determinism, the two authors reason about ways of composing social heterogeneity in a political project. This allows for an original reading of some of the issues involved in the discussion about CC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The path to acquiring an identity is complex and not without its problems for girls and boys; it is therefore necessary to avoid the accumulation of absolutely gratuitous and removable obstacles on their formative path, such as those caused by gender restrictions. Contemporary children’s literature today opens up to perspectives of this kind, feeding the imagination of readers with stories that address the gender issue from the perspective of the acquisition of an identity free of stereotypes. As we intend to demonstrate in this paper, an important contribution from this point of view is offered by the studies Carmela Covato has conducted on the relationship between gender and education, offering a careful look at the use of literary sources, among which children’s narratives are rightfully included. Christa Wolf's short story Neue Lebensansichten eines Katers has generally been read as a parody of the technocratic ambitions of the GDR and a satiric science-fiction in which women play no role. The following paper, however, focuses on the female characters of the story to illustrate the literary strategies that Wolf adopts to criticise and subvert the conventional power relations operating in gender dynamics. A close reading of the text will lead to a re-evaluation of the significance of the story within the path of the author's growing gender awareness, which culminates in her later rewritings Kassandra and Medea. - Abstract
This paper examines the fictional reception of Queen Elizabeth I in 17
th -century drama by connecting it to coeval debates on the legitimacy of female political power. Specifically, it focuses on Niccolò Biancolelli’s La regina statista d’Inghilterra (Bologna, 1668) and its re-writing of the supposed love affair between the Queen and the Earl of Essex as a way of showing the ultimate failure of the woman ruler. Biancolelli’s operation is contextualized and contrasted with preceding works that exploit the same subject, including its source, the Spanish El Conde de Sex by Antonio Coello (1633-1638), and Italian commedia dell’arte scenarios based on this play. The originality of La regina statista, this paper argues, lies in the overlapping of love and politics in the triangle already introduced by Coello, which turns into a struggle between the Queen and her rival Florisbe for power over the Earl of Essex and England alike. In intergenerational projects, learning a craft is an activity that may be of interest to people of different ages. This paper focuses on knitting as a craft. In most Western societies, knitting is often considered a craft for women, but on Taquile Island, Peru, it is the men who knit. This paper discusses knitting from an intergenerational perspective whilst focusing on gender and culture. To this aim, we introduce an intrinsic case study to examine the role of gender and culture in intergenerational learning. The data used in this study was collected during a visit to Taquile Island. In summary, the study’s findings reveal that (i) on Taquile, members of the community invest in maintaining cultural traditions in opposition to being swept along by (con)temporary social changes; (ii) knitting on Taquile is approached as a practical technique in contrast to Western culture where knitting is connected to the concept of ‘well-being’; and (iii) whilst gender structures may set frames for performance, the Taquile case demonstrates that what is typically considered ‘male’ or ‘female’ may vary.

BINARY gender system ,ENGLISH language ,GENDER ,LEXICON ,RAILROADS - Abstract
The paper analyses the diffusion of the term BINARIO (N) in its meaning related to gender identity in the Italian lexicon. In order to analyse the use of the term BINARIO (N), different sources have been investigated, such as Italian web corpora, Google searches and contents provided by Italian youtubers dealing with gender issues. I suggest that the term BINARIO (N), borrowed from English in its meaning of 'dichotomy' related to gender issues, has been reinterpreted in the light of a pseudo-etymology (a popular but false belief about the origin or derivation of a specific word) that involves the term BINARIO (N) 'rails, railway'. The metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY, described by G. Lakoff, seems to play an active role in the speakers' interpretation of the construction BINARIO (N) di genere, which can shift from the meaning of 'gender dichotomy' to that of 'predetermined path (rails) in gender identity'. As a matter of fact, gender binarism is often represented as a railway system, and those who do not identify their gender in binary terms are described as passengers being derailed from their path. This paper discusses the criminal offense of non-consensual dissemination of sexually explicit images and videos under Article 612-ter of the Italian Criminal Code as a form of gender-based violence. According to this assumption, a gender approach is crucial for both a sociological understanding of the phenomenon and prevention purposes. After an in-depth review of the relevant sociological, IT and legal literature, as well as of the Italian law and case-law, the essay tries to suggest a series of preventive measures and, additionally, support measures for the offended parties. REWARD (Psychology) ,GENDER ,PROFESSIONAL ethics ,HIGHER education ,KEY performance indicators (Management) - Abstract
The managerial transformation of Higher Education rules the university according to criteria of business efficiency and accountability (e. g. competitive diversification between academic structures, use of performance indicators, administrative and standardised evaluation of research, reward systems). In this paper we aim to investigate the university's managerialisation implications on the researcher's self-understanding, the pressures it puts on her/his ethos and professional ethics, and the reactions it elicits. In particular, we explore the focal points of experience, practices of self, counter-conducts and points of resistance expressed in appeals, editorial initiatives and movements which have briefly gained national prominence. By using a qualitative methodology through twelve in-depth interviews, we have identified three discursive focuses: the critique of the centralised device of evaluation and academic management, the resistance through the form of movement and processes of subjectivation and, finally, the salience of a gender point of view transversal to these dimensions. The academic labor is divided between researching, teaching and fulfilling administrative tasks. After the Gelmini reform, research has gain a relevant weight for career advancement. According to the literature, women are more inclined to take on teaching and administrative tasks, due to a gender scheme which considers them as more suited to these tasks. They are less likely to reach top positions and achieve them at a slower pace. In this paper we explore the role of teaching tasks in the trajectories of a group of Italian female academics, investigating the paths of adaptation/resistance to the new rules of competition. Through fifteen qualitative interviews it emerges teaching is an anchoring element: our interviewees perceive the direct relationship with students as indispensable to the achievement of professional satisfaction, or they consider the investment in this area as a potential gateway to an academic career. Some have experienced pressing demands for fulfilling both teaching and administrative tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from the mediology of literature (Ragone, 2019; Amendola & Tirino, 2019) and the sociology of narratives (Longo, 2012; Parini, 2017), this paper investigates the literary work of Roberta Rambelli (1928-1996) focusing on four points. First, the link between science fiction novel and social sciences, as Rambelli's work shows a particular attention to dramaturgically develop some concepts of social sciences (Lippi, 2007). Second, the deep link between science fiction and mythology, as is evident in Il libro di Fars (1961), La pietra di Gaunar (1966), and Profilo in lineare B (1980). Third, the dystopic narration of Italian society: in Il Ministero della Felicità (1972) the author inserts dystopic lumps that challenge the idea of a limitless technological expansion guided by ideas of progress and development, leaving room for a more pessimistic vision of the relationship between science and society. Fourth, the gender question: by contextualising Rambelli's literary work in the context of the cultural processes of the Italian publishing market in the 1960s and 1970s, the cogency of the gender issue is grasped, in reference to both the need to use male pseudonyms and the prejudice against a woman capable of climbing the hierarchies of the publishing industry. Technologies are changing the world of work, as the diffusion of new ways of working (e.g. smart working) shows. The paper, based on a qualitative research carried out in a banking institution, intends to reflect on what kind of gender conciliation this new organization of work promises and allows to the professionals interviewed. Is this "proactive approach to flexibility" freeing all workers by allowing them a better work-life balance or is bringing back women to work from home? The widespread use of smart working, due to Covid emergency, makes this issue relevant more than ever. The analysis of the stories warns enthusiasm against standardized models or recipes and invites to look for tailor-made solutions able to exploit the smart working potentiality: recognizing heterogeneity of professional profiles and their needs and dealing with the stereotypes of gender that still characterize the worklife balance issue is the next challenge. The paper aims to study the current transformations in trade union action by focusing on the meat processing industry in Italy, a sector characterized by a high share of atypical and subcontracted labour. Based on qualitative data collected inside two plants, the paper addresses the processes of labour force segmentation, according to axes such as employment contracts, workers’ nationality, skin colour and gender. Secondly, the paper analyses trade unions’ strategies to cope with these labour force fragmentations. By looking at the nexus between labour process and forms of organization, the paper singles out three approaches. These approaches, underpinned by unions’ understanding of labour market restructuring, epitomize different strategies to organize and mobilize labour. In conclusion, we argue that these conflicting approaches, although oriented towards enlarging unions’ membership and representativeness, actually embed, and thus contribute to strengthen, labour force segmentations in workplaces. Television is a dominant medium that can influence one’s attitude and social ideologies formation since it reflects sociolinguistic reality and maintains language ideologies and existing social stereotypes. For that reason, we can mention so-called female and male language patterns and their main characteristics, which are to a great extent associated with social power, i.e. the role that an individual has in his social community or community of practice. This paper aims to examine whether the Greek media and more specifically, the Greek TV series promote so-called male and female language patterns, as well as social stereotypes directed towards women. In this paper, we analysed the linguistic behaviour of the protagonists of the Greek series Mην αρχίζεις την μουρμούρα. Qualitative non-experimental research based on the analysis of linguistic behaviour at the level of the characters‘ lexical choice, Vaso and Charis showed that their choice of language patterns is proportional to their social or professional status. In addition, we noticed the presence of certain social stereotypes, while it is evident that the use of stereotypical-female language patterns is associated with a hierarchically lower social position.

In this paper, we analyze consumption patterns of leisure time among young people belonging to the so-called "second generation" of immigrants in Italy. Leisure time consumption describes how young immigrants use cultural products and services. We analyze data collected by the ISTAT through the survey on the "second generations" (2015). A comparison of leisure consumption patterns between second-generation immigrants and their Italian peers does not show significant differences. Rather, differences in consumption styles are associated to gender (male/female), geographic area of residence (North/South), and size of the municipality (large municipality/small municipality) of residence. Last year saw the biggest increase in billionaires in history, one more every two days. This huge increase could have ended global extreme poverty seven times over. 82% of all wealth created in the last year went to the top 1%, and nothing went to the bottom 50%., Dangerous, poorly paid work for the many is supporting extreme wealth for the few. Women are in the worst work, and almost all the super-rich are men. Governments must create a more equal society by prioritizing ordinary workers and small-scale food producers instead of the rich and powerful.

This paper analyzes Harry Brighouse and Erik Wright’s paper “Strong Gender Egalitarianism” and discusses the three options for parental leave that they propose to help achieve gender egalitarianism, or a structure in which the division of domestic labor is not affected by gender. This paper discusses potential weaknesses of these options, and, building on the concepts that Brighouse and Wright put forth, proposes a modified version of their policies which will ensure the equal distribution of domestic labor in the family.

In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in TV series available on online platforms. This poses a challenge for translators from a linguistic, social and cultural perspective, as they need to deal with the transference of fictional speech according to diverse identities. In this respect, translators are not only in charge of translating the fictional speech for a given audiovisual product to be either subtitled or dubbed into a different language, but they have the role of conveying and preserving LGBTQ+ characters’ identities accurately. The objective of this paper is to analyze the translation of sex-related language in TV series with LGBTQ+ representation. On the basis of a selected corpus of two different English-language TV series (Euphoria and Sex Education), this descriptive study analyzes the fictional speech of several LGBTQ+ characters and focuses on the translation of sex-related language from English into Spanish in both their dubbed and subtitled versions. The translation strategies used to render sex-related conversations when translating audiovisual fiction are discussed throughout the study in order to show different ways of facing the translation of specific sexual expressions. In this respect, the study intends to highlight the fact that all decisions made when translating fictional conversations that LGBTQ+ characters have about sex may have an influence on the representation of several topics such as sexuality, gender or identity. The study also discusses how other aspects such as the translation of inclusive language and the expression of gender identity may also affect the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters.

The paper analyzes the use of late 19th – early 20th century photographs by Antoin Sevruguin in the paperback edition by Helsinki-based author Ivar Lassy Behind Lattice and Veil (Helsinki, Otago, 1917). Photographer Antoin Sevruguin, originally Russian, lived and worked in Tehran from late 1860s up until his death in 1933. A generalized picture of a Persian woman is among the most common motifs of photographs that had been bought from Sevruguin studio by travelers and researchers alike, and eventually landed in the West. This paper looks closer at the re-contextualization of Sevruguin’s images in Lassy’s book as an example of adaptation of photographs as means of cultural representation by both popular and scientific discourse of the Orient.

Ethnic marginalisation minorities is a recurring theme in ethnic writers’ works, such as Julia Alvarez’s novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, which highlights the marginalisation of Dominican family García in American culture. This paper, which draws on postcolonial and Latina feminist theory, focuses on the societal practices and familial dynamics that decenter the García sisters’ status both in their family and Dominican and American sociocultural environments. The close reading analysis conveys various forms of discrimination and oppression against the García sisters based on gender and ethnicity. Contrary to the novel’s title, which implies that the sisters eventually lose their accents or connection to Dominican culture, the paper argues that the sisters, in their effort to transcend the margins, manage to situate themselves between two cultural fames, developing specific bicultural consciousness, which aids them in overcoming feelings of marginalisation, cultural and social alienation.

This paper explores the intersections between gender, display, and empire at turn-of-the-century world’s fairs in the United States. The 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition serves as a case study. Designed to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, the 1915 fair was hinged on contemporary notions of manliness and used gender ideology to articulate prevailing ideas and assumptions about the American nation, its new empire, and its influence on the entire world. Indeed, gendered rhetoric found its way into numerous contemporary published tracts, articles, paintings, and popular culture that take on the enormity of the Panama Canal and its implications. Manliness and its mechanical prosthetic, technology, became the arenas through which the United States refashioned its national body and confidently assumed its new role as imperialist on the world stage.

45. Emozioni narrate. Detti, non-detti e tabù delle maternità e paternità a distanza.

- Abstract
This paper aims to analyse transnational families from a not common point of view: the emotional dimensions on stage in transnational mothers’ and fathers’ accounts. International literature seldom analyses emotional costs on migrant men (Montes 2013), hardly represented as fathers. The transnational fatherhood is, in fact, with a few exceptions (Abbatecola 2010; Carling and Schmalzbauer Menjivar 2012; Dreby 2006) generally invisible to the eye. The attention to female first-migrants, by contrast, seems mostly focused on the absence of mothers (Ambrosini 2008; Lagomarsino 2006), crushed by processes of scapegoating - strangers to the fathers (Parrenas 2004) - that seem to emerge in the accounts as subjective emotions. The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to give visibility to the emotions narrated by transnational fathers and mothers, drawing from the results of a qualitative study: 30 life stories of transnational parents from Ecuador and Peru (20 mothers and 10 fathers with children at home or reunited in the four years preceding the interview) and 5 semi-structured interviews with key informants. More specifically, I intend to develop the article along three main paths: The differences between emotions narrated by transnational mothers and fathers with respect to different aspects of parenting at a distance (separation and meeting; reconstruction of the relationship after long gaps); The emotions that you can not tell in the light of an emotional culture (Gordon 1981) whose emotional codes are strongly characterized from the point of view of gender (mother’s disaffection and freedom to leave children as a choice); The emotions of researchers as a reaction of emotions narrated, also not neutral with respect to narrator’s gender. We start from the observation that language pairs like Polish and English display an intriguing asymmetry: Polish has the structural resources to express grammatical gender in nouns while English predominantly leaves these under-determined. Therefore, a speaker of English can conventionally say “I am a nurse” irrespective of the speaker’s gender, while in Polish male/female/non-binary speakers would likely use variable forms. This asymmetry leads to nuanced translation choices which this paper aims to explore. Based on a newly compiled corpus of English-to-Polish Netflix subtitles – amounting to 3.5 million words – we examine how 113 different occupation-related feminatives are deployed by translators. We address three main research questions (RQ1-RQ3). RQ1 is about the frequency of the relevant feminatives in our corpus. RQ2 deals with how the feminatives are distributed across the 284 productions analysed in the dataset. Finally, RQ3 addresses the relationship between the frequency of feminatives in Netflix subtitles and the acceptability of these feminatives, as judged by speakers.

Society management and the COVID-19 pandemic require continuous restatement and consolidation. Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development created by the United Nations establishes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations and where Goal 5 addresses gender equality as a central priority. The main aim of this paper is to present a crossed-analysis study on how the health crisis has influenced differently the social behaviour between gender and generations in Spain. For this study there have been used a massive open data from the Sociological Research Centre (CIS). The mixed techniques´ methodology of this research was applied to study four social effect dimensions, such as “way of living”, “way of thinking”, “way of self-healthcare” and “social habits and behaviour”. The used techniques contributed analytically to gender and generations management during the pandemic with the intent of complementarity. Obtained findings by analysing four studied dimensions explain the effects and consequences of the pandemic involving differences between men and women, younger and older generations, leading to society management implications that can timely serve as a paradigm with scientific insights for public policies.

Since the success of the Twilight saga (2008-2012) Kristen Stewart has become a powerful image whose status of star is permeated of many aspects that make of her also a celebrity. Her charismatic image that in few years has been associated to important fashion brands like Chanel or Balenciaga, also because of an androgynous body that condenses together female and male elements, establishes herself as a gender fluid icon. This paper aims to examine Kristen Stewart’s image as an influencer and a fashion icon taking in consideration her official profiles on social network (like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter in particular), and those one created by her followers (on Tumblr and Pinterest for example), confirming her as a model for young generation, taking into account fashion pictures, her appearance during Tv programs, public events (like previews, runway shows), commercials and videoclip where her celebrity status has become predominant. In order to highlight the mechanism employed in shaping Kristen Stewart’s new image, the paper is going to analyze her transformation, passing to be a dark teenager, and one of the most important sex-symbol’s girlfriend, like Robert Pattinson, to a new transgressive fashion icon, appreciated for being a nonconformist and able to catalyze mass media attention. In addition to her iconic image the paper is going to highlight her as a symbol of the fluid gender process, using her celebrity status to support some social issues: like female emancipation and rights or LGBTQ cause, increasing her popularity and making of her an active celebrity.

The analysis of the so-called gender paradox represents the starting point of a theoretical-interpretative framework which, through a structuralist analysis of gender identity, intends to introduce understanding criteria capable of shedding new light on a paradox that only appears to be such. After examining the achievements of the most recent sociological literature on gender, with particular reference to the multidimensional perspectives that look at gender as a structure in the Giddensian sense, the article proposes an original interpretative framework that explores the potentialities of structuration theory, delving into the dual nature inherent in structures, through the recurrence of "cultural patterns" and "symbolic resources". The second part of the article proposes a theoretical shift that assumes gender identity as a structure, to thematize the processes of social structuring that, starting from modernity, have led to the emergence of individuation processes, then declined, in late-modern societies, into individualization and singularization. The proposed interpretative framework allows, in the concluding part of the article, both to highlight how the gender paradox is not paradoxical at all, and to read the strong polarisation of the public debate around the redefinition of possible gender identifications as an expression of the new cleavage between hyper-culture and cultural essentialism.
