Attila Kerényi, Professor of Geography, was born in 1943 in Sátoraljaújhely. He earned a degree as a teacher of Geography and Biology in 1967. During the 1980s, he gained national and international scientific recognition for his research on soil erosion processes, and completed his candidate dissertation in 1984. In the 1990s, he became nationally acknowledged for his publications, textbooks and scientific books on landscape and environmental protection, and earned an academic doctorate title in the topic. His scientific work was recognized with numerous awards. In 2020, he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in recognition of his several decades of research and teaching activities which have greatly contributed to the renewal of geography education at the University of Debrecen. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, his colleagues interviewed Professor Kerényi about his family, profession, achievements and the state of global environmental systems.

Hogyan deríthetők fel régészeti módszerekkel rituális cselekvések nyomai? Esszénk első részében a rituálé fogalmi meghatározásának nehézségeivel foglalkozunk. Amellett érvelünk, hogy alapvetően a kutató által kialakított kategóriáról van szó, ezért a „rituális cselekvés” azonosításának a régészeti emlékanyagban nincs egységes, minden esetben alkalmazható kritériumrendszere. A „cselekvés” fizikai lenyomatai azonban vizsgálhatók egységes szempontok szerint. Ilyen egységes elemző módszer lehet a műveletsor, ami az anyagi kultúra előállításának, használatának és eldobásának technikáin keresztül hatol az egykori közösség kulturális értékeinek szövetébe. A „rítus” az elemzést követően, a rekonstruált cselekvésmódok összességének értelmezésekor válik megvilágító erejű fogalommá. Esettanulmányunk, a boldogkőváraljai pengedepó segítségével mutatjuk be, hogyan kapcsoljuk össze a műveletsor analitikai eszközeit a rituális cselekvés értelmezési tartományával.

On 3rd April 2018, the world-famous scholar Jacques Tixier died at the age of 93. He was the last one of the three great French prehistorians who made fundamental imprints on prehistoric archaeology after World War 2.

Andornaktálya-Marinka is among the several Palaeolithic archaeological sites in the region of Eger, on the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, North-Eastern Hungary. It is situated on the top of a 234 m high elevation located between the villages Andornaktálya and Ostoros. The site was discovered in 2014 by Ferenc Cserpák. Surface collections yielded by several field surveys show two kinds of archaeological material: one is signified mostly by a bifacial-like industry made of quartz porphyry (metarhyolite), while the other one is abundant in blade-like pieces made of Silesian erratic flint. The main aim of the excavation carried out in summer 2018 was to obtain stratigraphic information about the position of the industries, as well as to characterize the quaternary sediments covering the hilltop. The artefacts unearthed in the five trenches occurred in a depth of 60 to 80 cm in a brown chernozem-like layer.

Recently discovered traces of a settlement dated to the Epipaleolithic-Mesolithic period in Páli-Dombok site would shednew light on the questions of human contacts between the inner territories of the Carpathian Basin and Central Europe.The circumstances of the exploration and the excavation method were both subjects of previous papers, therefore here wewould like to focus only on the field works conducted in 2015.

Due to the construction of the M86 motorway, intensive quarrying activity started at several locations of the Rába Valley in Northwestern Hungary. This undertaking provided the discovery of a new archaeological site near the village of Páli in August 2014. During the rescue excavation, a rich lithic assemblage was unearthed, suggesting a human occupation related to the Epipalaeolithic–Early Mesolithic period. It is the first in situ site preceding the Neolithic in the region.

In August 2013, a new site was excavated on the top of Gyilkos Hill at Andornaktálya, near Eger (Northern Hungary). This investigation belongs to a Polish–Hungarian research collaboration in the frame of which four Palaeolithic sites were excavated in the Eger region since 2002. The knapped industry collected at Andornaktálya-Gyilkos site can be attributed to the Early Upper Palaeolithic Aurignacian culture.
