Having filled in a number of leading posts at other institutions (the Neumann House, National Széchényi Library, MOKKA) the author joined HLI in 2011 for a term of five years. 2012 was a difficult year for public collections, and HLI, too, was severely hit by restrictions: its basic, special and ad hoc tasks had to be fulfilled with a staff whose number was reduced by 50%. The review of activities covers the following fields: 1) operative support programmes (HLI participated in these long-term EU programmes both as an applicant and a supporter of applying libraries), 2) support to the further education of Hungarian librarians in the neighbouring countries, 3) elaboration of electronic teaching materials and e-learning developments, planning of a distance education framework, 4) organization of the 7th Meeting of Hungarian Librarians in the World in 2013, in co-operation with the Library of the Hungarian Parliament, 5) participation in the strategic planning for librarianship in the cycle starting in 2013, 6) co-operation with some e-publishers who undertook the provision of their ebooks (bibliographic work and information services), 7) construction of the Directory of Hungarian Libraries, using data collected earlier, 8) participation in development programmes for libraries, public education and museums (Active communities, Museum and library developments for all) in co-operation with partners. During the implemention of semantic web technology in GLAM-institutions, the most exciting issue is what to do with data that have been converted from MARC to another data format - after selecting the most proper vocabularies and element sets. Practical, excited and impatient colleagues ask the question: what is this for? Will it be useful for patrons and for librarians? When does the Google-Canaan come? Do we really need a new data format? What steps can we take today, and which are nowadays only a vision? In this study, we examine the results achieved in the area of data service and information retrieval based on linked data, and, in addition, we look at the gripping competition of traditional and new technologies. In 2018, the authors conducted an online survey of Hungarian researchers' data literacy, as part of an international project. The basic questionnaire was compiled in 2017 by Professor Serap Kurbonoglu (University of Ankara) and Professor Joumana Boustany (Université Paris). Their findings have been reported in international publications. The Hungarian survey covered 108 researchers. The responses were compared with those from Croatia, Iceland, Spain and Slovenia within the international survey. Seven general questions (about demographics) were followed by 18 multiplechoice questions about how researchers manage their own research data. These questions focused on: access to data required for research, the forms of data used, the use of external data, knowledge of data storage solutions, issues of long-term data retention, use of supplementary information, issues of data sharing, knowledge of metadata, use of referencing systems, data storage requirements, open access, existence of institutional data management strategies, costs related to research data, etc. In their analysis the authors highlighted similarities to and differences from the responses of foreign researchers, and provided suggestions on steps to be taken to modernize research knowledge (e.g., participation in data management training, rethinking joint data use and data sharing under OA), further investigations, etc.). HAS created the Hungarian National Scientific Bibliography (in Hungarian abbreviated as MTMT) in 2009 from its own sources. Co-founders included the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, the Hungarian Rectors' Conference, the National Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) and the National Graduate Council, later the initiative was joined by Hungarian universities, colleges and health institutions. Under the New Szechenyi Plan's Social Renewal Operational Programme (SROP) a sum of HUF 308 million was envisaged for completing the works on building the national scientific bibliographic database. Under the two-year project the bibliographic data of works of scientific relevance, published by the staff members of Hungarian higher education institutions, academic and other research programmes, in the period between 2007 and 2014 will become accessible as a whole. The database will, however, be much more comprehensive, really important data will go back to as far as 1990. The work is coordinated by the Library and Information Centre of HAS, which will become significantly upgraded, partly due to this project, and will be transformed into a 21st-century modern information centre, in addition to keeping its traditional role. One of Ranganathan's laws declares that Libraries are for use. Relying on this statement the essay sets out that in the digital environment libraries have to continue to provide access to content because they are for users. The constant development of electronics, computer sciences and telecommunications has resulted in the creation of virtual worlds. Today's information technology solutions make it possible for libraries to provide traditional library services outside the library building and regardless of opening hours. It is hard to foresee how this trend will affect the mission and tasks of libraries in the future. In an extreme sense, the importance of traditional libraries might diminish. But in another context, the new ICT-supported library services can lead to the increase of the prestige of libraries. The new technologies enable libraries to offer high-level services, to satisfy 21st century user needs as well as to attract new user groups to the world of library and information services. Through the application of ICT and web-supported tools, the scope of library services has effectively been widened and enhanced, both in quality and quantity. Born as a response of libraries to contemporary user needs, virtual libraries are more than a collection of digital documents. They effectively provide the virtual model of a real library. The latest 3D technology applications make it possible for anyone to browse through a virtual library via the Internet One example of the web- based interactive 3D technologies is X3D, a license-free XML-based open standard, with the help of which anyone can build a virtual library according to his or her ideas and needs. Web diaries - widely known as blogs - represent a specific genre of information society communication tools. Throughout their 17 years of history, blogs have become the ultimate tool of self-expression, enabling individuals to record their everyday experiences, thoughts and emotions and make them available for a wide public. Blogs are being written by academics, politicians, housewives and business- men, and since 1995, also by librarians. Libraries, as the core institutions of information society, have been among the first organisations to discover and utilize opportunities provided by blogs. The library blogosphere can be divided into two parts. „Liblogs‟ are written by library and information professionals (individuals), while library blogs represent the official views of the institutions. Library blogs can fulfill multiple functions, from providing library news and recommending books to explaining library work processes and promoting events. One of the advantages of library blogs over library websites is that they make it possible for users to build a closer and friendlier relationship with librarians. The first Hungarian liblog called „Miss Librarian‟ (www. konyvtamskisass.zony.hu) was launched on November 22. 2003, while the official library blogs followed three years later, in 2006. In the same year. a library blog portal called KLOG was created in order to provide access to the constantly increasing number of institutional web diaries (blogs of public and school libraries, library associations, as well as blogs from interdisciplinary areas). The functioning of corporate libraries is closely connected to the business activities of their respective company. In order to satisfy their users and ensure constant development and expansion of their services, corporate libraries have recognised the need for effective marketing activities targeting their own „market‟, the staff of the company. Corporate libraries can only fulfill their mission if their services provide customised, relevant, accurate, reliable, quality information that can be accessed by their users in the most adequate form and in the shortest time. Corporate libraries can only prove the value and importance of their services to their company if they meet the above mentioned requirements. The development trends in information services related to intellectual property are dnven by the innovation policies of the economically most developed countries and the European Union. Therefore, information service providers are fostering closer partnerships with the industrial sector and with various players of the innovation process. The homepage of the Hungarian Patent Office was launched in 1996, when the organisation celebrated its 100th anniversary. During the past ten years, the webpage underwent two major functional and structural reorganizations. The restructuring processes were made necessary, on the one hand, in order to comply with new rules related to the homepages of governmental organisations, on the other hand they reflected the ever widening scope of activities of the Office, including the efforts made in the area of awareness-raising concerning intellectual property rights. The use of the fairly comprehensive webpage, containing more than 12,000 pages has been increasing year by year. In 2007, 310,823 individually identified users and 2,230,000 downloads were registered on the webpage. Starting from the fall of 2006, the instruction of library and information science majors in Hungary has been enacted in a two-tier education system complying with the Bologna declaration for higher education. It was in spring of 2008 that the Ministry of Education and Culture released the list of requirements for training and qualification of the second level, the magister (or master's) degree, which determines the corpus of knowledge and professional competences the would-be graduates are to command. The study discusses the system of requirements of the BA (bakkalaureus or bachelor-level) instruction currently conducted, the subject directions announced by the 11 institutions of higher education participating in the instruction, the general and professional stock material, the personal and professional competences to be learned in the master-level instruction, the scope of knowledge and subjects pertaining to the permitted subject directions as well as the topical items of information related to the master-level training. The EOD Project was originally conceived and launched by the University of Innsbruck to provide a service of "e-books on demand" in co-operation with 13 libraries from 8 countries. The Project aims to work out a successful business model that could be utilized in digitizing the collections of public libraries. To this end, questionnaire-based surveys were conducted in order to determine the accurate volume of demands. The Hungarian National Shared Catalogue (MOKKA) is a database with three major tasks to fulfil. When it was launched its main mission was to provide a common pool of authentic bibliographic records for libraries to share. Since then, it has also become a valuable online tool for the general public when they try to locate books, audiovisual material, printed music and other online documents in Hungarian libraries. It contains the catalogue records of the Hungarian Electronic Library as well. Thirdly, as a result of a development to be implemented in the near future, MOKKA will become the bibliographic foundation of the National Document Delivery System replacing its present bibliographic database. This article summarizes how the relatively simple functional model of the database is supplemented with a duplicate check and conversion processes of data format, character sets, and often library specific transformations of local conventions to ensure a more or less coherent database. Another aim of the paper is to enhance the co-operation between the databases of MOKKA and its 31 contributing libraries by pinpointing the elements of submitted records that are especially important for the workings of the central mechanism and thus for the quality of the MOKKA database. The Section of Librarians in Social Science Libraries, the Vas County Organisation of the Hungarian Library Association together with the Kovács Máté Foundation organised a session in July 2008 in Szombathely in memory of Géza Fülöp (1928-1998), university professor at ELTE, who was born eighty years ago. After spending years in the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and at the Academy Publishing House G. Fülöp has worked at the Library Department of the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, from 1986 as its chair. Under his leadership (1986-1994) the position of the department has strengthened, a new curriculum was born: beside the modernization of content and infrastructure two new post-graduate courses were launched (in book history and book museology), and the international contacts were intensified (TEMPUS, BOBCATSSS, EUCLID). Unprofessional internet browsers and the general use of national languages in information search have increased the importance of geographical names in retrieval, and information seeking in libraries must keep pace with this. It has become necessary to create structured vocabularies (thesauri) that reflect the administrative and territorial, historical, neighbourhood etc. relations between geographical names, and make relevant search easier. The study describes the changes in the possibilities of searching for geographical names, the creation of a Hungarian thesaurus, Geotaurusz that is compatible with many Hungarian universal thesauri, e.g. the one generally used in public libraries, Köztaurusz. Geotaurusz is a universal geographical thesaurus, indicating geographical proper nouns in Hungarian and general geographical names, from today's Hungary and from the historical periods before 1945, and from other parts of the world. Geotaurusz contains currently 70 000 names, but is growing continuously, and is one of the largest thesauri also in international comparison. MATARKA, the Hungarian database service providing tables of contents of Hungarian periodicals started in 2002 (http://www.matarka.hu). MATARKA has recently initiated an article-copy sending service in cooperation with the Document Supply Service of the Customer Service Department of the National Széchényi Library. As we immersed ourselves into this subject we became interested in how similar document sending services work abroad. We examined three leading institutes that provide such article-copy sending services: the British Library Document Supply Centre (they also deal with interlibrary loans), the CISTI - Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (their other activities include information research, publishing etc.), and subito document delivery service (also providing book-chapters). Transport by water and cruising seem to regain importance and popularity in Hungary, which results in growing interest in related information. However, library reference services have not concentrated sufficiently on the subject of shipping over the past decades, so the author of this study makes an attempt to fill the gap. The study provides a comprehensive guide to the most important Hungarian information sources related to ship transport available on the Internet. The competitiveness of countries depends also on if they succeed in assisting socially or financially handicapped social groups to avail themselves of the benefits of information society. Surveys show that more than half of the Hungarian population are digitally illiterate. Governmental development programs (such as E-Hungary) have proved that digital illiteracy can be overcome more successfully by involving local mediators. Within the framework of the E-Hungary 2.0 grants an eMentor service has been created as a tool of assistance. EMentors were trained in 2006 at 40-hour courses, from 2007 on at 60-hour ones. The training consists of traditional consultations (5x5 hrs) and distant education (5x5 hrs). The themes are: the basics of computer science, new Internet techniques, important homepages of community information etc. The Hungarian Library Institute too took part in the training of eMentors, and having identified the need for continuing this training, worked out the curriculum of a combined, practice-oriented course in 60 hrs (under the title From Web 1.0 towards Web 2.0 in a changing world of the Internet). The Hungarian Library Institute (HLI) carried out a survey in 2007 in the public libraries of some small towns. In the first phase researchers collected information in the libraries of towns with fewer than 5000 inhabitants, that had recently been qualified as cities. The research revealed, applying sociographic methods, the roles which town libraries must play in our times; how the expectations depend from local circumstances; what is the prestige of the library and the librarian like; what is the relationship between statistics and local reality. The subjects of semi-structured interviews were: the library managers and their staff, the mayors, local cultural managers and library users. It was found that the different functions undertaken and the efficiency of work were primarily determined by human resources. The quality of library services is not defined by needs, rather by local opportunities. The factors necessary for efficient activity are as follows: a qualified library manager with good communication skills, a supportive funding body and good professional connections. Viability is measured by the harmony between services and local needs. Statistical data provide only basic knowledge on how the library operates, but are not sufficient to outline a differentiated image. In the period of Enlightenment many scholars possessing an extensive and universal knowledge in science, arts, philosophy and bibliography were acting as librarians. One of them was Michael Denis (1729-1800), a Jesuit monk and teacher at the Collegium Theresianum in Vienna. The essay describes the modern educational principles of this institution, with special regard to the knowledge for collecting, classifying and cataloguing books, that had been elaborated by Denis, working among others as a librarian. It was his merit that the teaching of literary history and bibliography was introduced into the curriculum. He worked out the themes of the subject in 1775 under the title Grundriss der Bibliographie oder Bücherkundeߪ. He taught his students how to use libraries actively and how to use the knowledge inherent in books. In 1777 he wrote the first college textbook on library science: Einleitung in die Bücherkunde, vol. 1: Bibliographie. In the Theresianum there were many Hungarian students from the aristocracy and the nobility, who later became famous book collectors and founders of libraries, and played an important role in national culture. Among them was Ferenc Széchényi, who founded the Hungarian National Library (1802), and George Festetics, the founder of the agricultural academy in Keszthely (1797). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Máté Kovács (1906-1972) was Chair of the LIS Department at the Budapest Roland Eötvös University, a library-politician and scholar of library science. His oeuvre was remembered on a number of occasions in 2006, the centenary of his birth. It was an important stage in his lifework when he compiled, together with his staff, the anthology on the history of the book, libraries, printing and the press (A könyv és könyvtár a magyar társadalom életében), as a theoretical background for LIS education, and as a basis for a potential professional manual. The quantity of texts collected has exceeded the planned size, so a decision was made to publish the anthology in two chronological volumes: From the beginnings to 1848 (1963), From 1849 to 1945 (1970). From his correspondence with the publishing house it is known that in 1970 the materials for the third volume (From 1945 to the present) were also practically complete. Unfortunately the manuscript has disappeared and could not be traced ever since. The essay describes - by analysing Máté Kovács' legacy - how the volumes were compiled, the structure of the anthology and its pedagogical objectives. The author considers what the profession could do for producing a supplement for the missing third volume, for compiling an overview of the era in question. The LIS Euroguide by CERTIDoc is a potential evaluation tool against professional expectations, and at the same time a system of professional qualification which guarantees the equivalence of diplomas, learning and professional experience for European information professionals at an all-European level. In 2003 a survey was conducted on the existing levels of professional qualification in the LIS profession in Europe, and on how a new, unified system of qualification would be received. On behalf of Hungary the Association of Hungarian Librarians took part: it acknowledged the importance of the project and recommended the consideration of national, unique traditions. The essay describes in detail the structure of the LIS Euroguide and illustrates it with examples. The LIS Euroguide has been so far translated into 14 languages. The competencies discussed are grouped by fields of expertise and at four levels (assistant, technician, manager and expert in information services). The guide describes 33 fields of expertise in five comprehensive categories (Information, Technology, Communication, Management, Other scientific knowledge). Competencies have been defined at four levels (awareness, knowledge of practice, effective use of tools, effective use of methodology). Qualification may be granted from 2005 on by the organisations mandated by the CERTIDoc Consortium only. Currently there are three organisations (ADBS, DGI and SEDIC) engaged in qualification. In June 2007 at the meeting of the CERTIDoc working group in Paris participants reported on the state of preparations to introduce the system in their countries. A new version of the LIS Euroguide is expected to be published in summer 2009. The traditional process of scholarly communication librarians had been accompanied by librarians: they were present at the birth of articles, at providing the publications for users and even prepared relevant impact analyses. In the last 10 to 15 years scholarly publishing has undergone major transformation, and, as a consequence, librarians had to redefine their roles. As open-access (OA) information is available on the Internet, researchers nowadays apply alternative strategies in research and information seeking, and their new generation with rich IT experience has different needs. Researchers provide open access to their findings by publishing their articles in OA-journals, or depositing them with digital repositories. In addition to subject repositories institutional ones have recently appeared, and large providers (as Elsevier Scopus, and Scientific Commons) joined in too. Simultaneously new forms of peer review have gained ground. In case of OA-publishers the period of publishing has become shorter, and when assessing one's scholarly output OA literature is now increasingly included in citation analyses and impact studies. Libraries can contribute to co-ordinating the research work in their institutions by establishing databases of publications and/or institutional repositories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with the latest developments in the field of the digitisation of European cultural and scientific heritage. It presents the Dynamic Action Plan worked out by the National Representatives Group of the Member States, made up of experts of ministries and/or institutions engaged in cultural digitisation. It also examines the European Commission's Recommendations on the digitisation and online accessibility of cultural content and digital preservation, as well as the Council's Conclusion on this topic. The author gives indications on the activities that a Member State – like Hungary – should pursue in order to meet the requirements of the Information Society in the cultural area. The article focuses on the Nagykanizsa model of library service system for rural areas in Hungary. This model is based on two sub-systems, a non-stop virtual reference center which delivers documents and services effectively and the network of collaborating libraries, which include the István Halis Municipal Library and the surrounding village libraries. The services offered by this system, including a digital library of documents of local interest and an interlibrary loan system, are discussed.

The article focuses on a new model of providing effective library services in the rural areas of Hungary, the Library Service System for Rural Areas in Bács-Kiskun County. The process by which a new library and information service providing center is set up in a small village with the help of the county library is discussed. The article also discusses the benefits received by the village library from professional support and quality services and the state's financial support for the service system.

Practical suggestions on what to publish, why, when, where and how. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study analyses, how digital library issues are represented in the courses of LIS education in Hungary, particularly at the Szent István University's Applied Philological Faculty (in Jászberény) and at the Berzsenyi Dániel College (in Szombathely). The authors have followed the method of Bawden, Vilar and Zabukovec, comparing education and training for digital librarians in Slovenia and the UK. As first, the Hungarian authors have defined the differences between electronic, virtual, digital and hybrid libraries. Based on the definition of the digital library they conclude that this theme should be discussed together with electronic library issues. The analysis of training programmes has shown that digital library issues are also included in other courses (e.g. in those for information brokers, school librarians, or on Internet resources and collection development, etc.). In Jászberény the course Electronic libraries can be chosen as an optional one, and three courses of the Information broker module include also digital library aspects. In Szombathely archiving techniques were studied already in the early nineties, since 1996 within the courses The Internet and Internet resources (later Web editing); now the digital library-related themes are part of the Electronic library course. Within the frame programme Information broker a special course was started under the title Digital content provision. Digital library issues are present in both institutions' programmes. As this theme is continuously developing and changing, it is very important to regularly adjust the content of courses and training to actual needs and international trends, and to take into account the practice of digital and electronic libraries in Hungary. Despite the automation of work processes and services worldwide, the importance of highly skilled human resource has increased in every professional area, including the area of information services. This situation lead to a change of paradigm in librarianship, especially concerning the skills and attitudes required in the library environment. The recent library legislation in Hungary established the new system of libraries and library services and laid down the structures of professional training and continuous training of librarians. Making the image of librarianship more attractive became one of the strategic goals of the Hungarian Library Strategy for the period 2003–2007. The implementation of the strategic plans has become an issue of great interest among all library professionals. There are a number of issues that need to be re-considered in the system of training, including the components and proportions of the knowledge areas that need to be studied and the content and structures of professional training and continuous training. The first large-scale modernisation process of the services of the National Széchényi Library was initiated by József Fitz, director general of the library in the 1930s and 1940s. Under his direction, changes were made to both the collection / acquisition activities and the cataloguing / reference services. The special collections were enhanced further. Mimeograph machines were installed for the duplication of catalogue records and the old-fashioned catalogue was replaced by a decimal classification system. Readers' services were given special attention, rooms for readers and researchers were made more comfortable and standard lending rules were introduced. A ma meglévö metaadatszabványok választéka a rendkivül bonyolultaktól a nagyon egyszerüekig terjed. A metaadatszabványok viszonylagos egyszerüsége vagy bonyolultsága nagyrészt az információforrásoktól függ, amelyekre a szabványokat kidolgozták, valamint attól, hogy milyen mélységü leírást találtak szükségesnek ahhoz, hogy az információforráshoz való hozzáférést lehetövé tegyék. A cikk áttekinti a metaadatszabványok közötti különbségeket, a jelenlegi katalogizálási gyakorlatokat, és hogy miképpen alkalmazzák azokat a könyvtárakban. A szerzök ismertetik a metaadatok és a katalogizálási szabványok kulcsfogalmainak meghatározását, valamint áttekintik a legismertebb metaadatsémákat. A jelenlegi katalogizálási gyakorlatok tárgyalása magában foglalja a legáltalánosabb katalogizálási gyakorlatok és szabványok áttekintését, a metaadatok hatását a könyvtári gyakorlatra, valamint a könyvtárosoknak a metaadatokkal kapcsolatos szerepét. A szerzök példaként tárgyalják az OHIOLINK ETD-t (Elektronikus Szakdolgozatok és Disszertációk Központja = Electronic Thesis and Dissertations Center), azaz elektronikus szakdolgozatokat és disszertációkat mint kivételes információforrásokat arra, hogy hogyan alkalmazzák az AACR2-t és a MARC21-et metaadatok tárolására, leirására és hozzáférésére. Magda Horváth was an outstanding expert and professor of library cataloguing and indexing. She worked at the Centre for Library Science end Methodology of the National Széchényi Library. Together with Danes Kövendi, she was one of the authors of the Hungarian thesaurus of library science and reference services that is still being used by the Library and Information Science Library for subject cataloguing. She was also editor of Könyvtári Figyelő (Library Review), at that time known as Könyvtári and Dokumentációs Szakirodalom (Hungarian Journal of Library Science and Documentation). TÁRKI Social Research Centre has been conducting longitudinal household monitoring surveys since 1992. In 2005, on the initiative of the National Széchényi Library, 10 questions on reading habits and library use, as well as 10 questions on computer and Internet use were added to the permanent topics. The survey was carried out between 16th September and 15th October 2005, The sample consisted of 3674 citizens over 18, in order to make the results comparable with the data obtained from previous reading surveys over the past four decades, This quick report highlights the most spectacular changes and tendencies. As for the proportion of book readers within the surveyed sample, the percentage of non-readers has increased from 40% to 60% since the 1960s. 80% the of non-readers do not use computers either, When taking a closer look at the content of reading, it can be noted that instead of the classical orientation of the 1960s, readers show a preference towards national and international popular fiction, however, a slight improvement in quality book reading can be stated too. The reading of newspapers and magazines has been decreasing continuously. In respect of sources of reading, the number of books obtanied by library loan has decreased by 66% and the motivation for buying books has weakened as well. The usage data of library services show stagnation. Who is the average library user? She is a woman, aged between 18 and 29, and she is most likely member of several libraries. Questions were asked about the latent library users (e.g. family members), the frequency of library visits, and the range of services used. The responses revealed a significant setback in the requests for reference services. As opposed to this, the use of computers has increased and shows a close connection to library use. However, the percentage of the culturally disadvantaged -- in this context the non-readers -- is increasing, the maintained usage data of library services is probably due to the expansion of higher education, while the use of Internet shows stagnation. The first part of the Hungarian library strategy cycle for the period 2003-2007 has finished. This report aims to give an overview of what has been accomplished so far. The development projects, the allocated financial resources and the changes in regulations reflect the following focus areas in the given period of time: extending access to documents and information, enhancing services to disadvantaged users, improving the library supply of geographically disadvantaged areas, and introducing quality management in the library field. The National Széchényi Library (NSZL) has developed a program that makes it possible to convert UDC numbers of old catalogue records into subject terms. The outcome of the project will be that records of the retrospective catalogue will become searchable both by UDC numbers and with the thesaurus of the National Széchényi Library. The conversion is based on the data included in the publicly accessible NSZL thesaurus, supported by the RELEX thesaurus management system. This thesaurus already contains a significant quantity of related data (descriptors and UDC numbers as well as UDC indexes and UDC numbers). The conversion is carried out by the JAVA-based program using these relations. This project proves that the UDC numbers of records in retrospective catalogues can be converted into subject terms automatically, without major intellectual investment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The partnership of OCLC and the National Széchényi Library in the field of document supply goes back several years with promising prospects for the future. After a general introduction, OCLCs international interlibrary loan activities are described in detail. The Document Delivery Service of the National Széchényi Library supplies hundreds of documents to foreign partners every year. The article surveys the requests of the past few years and analyses them according to their main characteristics: requesting partner, requesting method, requested document type, place and date of publication and content. Not much research has been done in the field of organisational culture yet, although as the results show, appropriate analysis would help find answers to important questions e.g. how to increase efficiency in the library. The study deals with the levels and system of organisational culture elaborated by Quinn and Schein and presents the competing values framework. In an earlier issue of Scientific and Technical Information, György Sebestyén presented the PhD programme on library and information sciences at the Eötvös Loránd University. It is less widely known that the PhD degree in LIS can also be obtained at the University of Debrecen. However, library and information sciences do not constitute an independent PhD programme in Debrecen. Partly due to this fact, partly deriving from the history of the local department of library and information sciences, the results are more modest compared to the achievements in Budapest. Yet the endeavours are important, especially in the light of the local, in many respect special circumstances and in connection with the current situation and future development trends of library and information sciences. The study – based upon an international survey about content representation in online databases – examines the Hungarian situation. It is a survey of 16 Hungarian reference databases, regarding their subject representation tools (number, source, notation, content and context). In international comparison, we have to admit that the existing level of subject representation in Hungarian databases is not sufficient for a more detailed content analysis. As the quantity of data available online is growing, we must develop more sophisticated services in order to represent scientific literature according to its value.
