In the present article authors summerize the current concepts and innovations of tribology from orthopaedic aspects, while reviewing the international literature. In this paper, main materials of total hip prosthesis implants are discussed: polyethylene - as one of the possible causes, responsible for implant loosening throughout polyethylene - (Willert) disease; mechanical and wear properties of metal components; and specificities of ceramic surfaces. Furthermore, authors also present the problem of implant allergy as well as recommendations according to the joint statement of the German Implant Allergy Working Group. Due to the fact that in Hungary tribological researches in orthopaedics are focused on the type of a material or a hip prosthesis component, authors dedicate this revue to a broad overview for orthopaedic and trauma surgeons.
