The reviewed book examines the development of a regionally important city in Western Hungary. Industrial development and new modes of transportation and communication were accompanied by population growth and social restructuring during the 19th century. The study analyzes the causes and effects of these changes, and places them in the national context.

Because of the expansive nature of the subject, the reviewed book discusses only the most significant elements of the political, economic, and social history of the European and South American countries of Spanish language and Brazil. The book then traces changes resulting from the end of colonial status and the Industrial Revolution.
