Genetic engineering is currently at the forefront of biotechnological innovation and aspires to change once and for ever the way we understand and handle human nature. Especially the growth of Eugenics makes us visualise a different world, where humanity will not only dispense itself from the detrimental gene mutations that are accountable for fatal illnesses, but will also ameliorate through prenatal gene manipulation. In the first part of this paper, I will introduce the responsibility-oriented morality of Hans Jonas, who supports vividly all efforts of negative Eugenics but seems sceptical about genetic enhancement, since on the one hand we have no right to decide on behalf of our descendants on what is best for them, and on the other due to his view that the abundance of our genetic stock should not hang on parents’ desires. In the second part, I will correlate these oppositions with Hannah Arendt’s concept of “natality”. Not only do Jonas and Habermas invoke it with applause; “natality” also discloses the very essence of birth, namely that each newborn epitomises total unpredictability and promises to renew human affairs. So, gene manipulation for enhancement purposes seems to encroach on “natality’s” dominion and diminish future autonomy. Finally, I will argue that, if Arendt’s conceptual frame consolidates objections to positive Eugenics, each unborn child holds a right to surprise, the content of which is not limited to an individual level but touches society and humanity.

165 σ., Σκοπός της παρούσας διατριβής είναι η μέτρηση της ενεργού διατομής της αντίδρασης 237Np(n,f) στα πλαίσια της συνεργασίας n_TOF (neutron Time-of-Flight) ως προς τις αντιδράσεις αναφοράς 235U(n,f) και 238U(n,f), στο ενεργειακό εύρος keV-MeV και η θεωρητική μελέτη της ενεργού διατομής της αντίδρασης αυτής με στατιστικά πρότυπα. H αντίδραση αυτή έχει μελετηθεί στο παρελθόν αλλά τα υπάρχοντα δεδομένα ενεργού διατομής παρουσιάζουν απόκλιση μέχρι και 7%, μη αποδεκτή για θεωρητική μελέτη της αντίδρασης αυτής αλλά και για τις ανάγκες της πυρηνικής τεχνολογίας. Για τη μείωση των συστηματικών αβεβαιοτήτων μετρήθηκε η ίδια αντίδραση σε δύο εγκαταστάσεις με διαφορετικά χαρακτηριστικά: στην εγκατάσταση \ntof (neutron Time-of-Flight) στο CERN και στο Ινστιτούτο Πυρηνικής και Σωματιδιακής Φυσικής (Ι.Π.Σ.Φ.) στο ΕΚΕΦΕ ``Δημόκριτος''. Οι στόχοι των ακτινίδων χαρακτηρίστηκαν ως προς τη μάζα και την ομοιογένειά τους με φασματοσκοπία α και την τεχνική οπισθοσκέδασης Rutherford αντίστοιχα. Τα αποτελέσματα από τα δύο πειράματα βρίσκονται σε πολύ καλή συμφωνία μεταξύ τους, γεγονός που επιβεβαιώνει την αξιοπιστία τους. Επίσης, μελετήθηκε η συμπεριφορά ενός καινότόμου ανιχνευτή MicroMegas, βρέθηκαν οι βέλτιστες συνθήκες λειτουργίας του και η συνάρτηση απόκρισής του ως προς την ανίχνευση των θραυσμάτων σχάσης. Προτείνεται η εκτενής πειραματική και θεωρητική μελέτη της ενεργειακής περιοχής 500 keV< En, The main goal of the present thesis is to provide new high accuracy data for the 237Np(n,f) cross section, relative to the standard 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) cross sections, within the context of the n_TOF collaboration. The existing data are numerous, however present discrepancies that reach 8% at the plateau, which limits the accuracy of the evaluations, and thus the subsequent theoretical analysis. Furthermore, accurate cross section data for this reaction are needed for the design of the future nuclear reactor technology. In order to reduce the systematic uncertainties, measurements were performed at two facilities with totally different characteristics of the neutron beam, data acquisition system and subsequent data analysis: 1) the n_TOF facility at CERN, which provides a white neutron beam with high instantaneous flux, and with use of a gaseous detector (Fast Ionization Chamber), and 2) the neutron production facility of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of the N.C.S.R. “Demokritos”, which provides quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams, with use of a state-of the-art MicroMegas detector. The actinide targets used were characterized experimentally as far as their masses and homogeneity are concerned, with α-spectroscopy and the Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry technique, respectively. The cross section data from the independent measurements agree within errors, validating the obtained results. Finally, a theoretical investigation of the 237Np(n,f) reaction cross section was performed, in an effort to reproduce the obtained cross section results, within the Hauser-Feshbach formalism and phenomenological models, as implemented in the EMPIRE code., Μαρία Κ. Διεπιστημονικό-Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (Δ.Π.Μ.Σ.) “Δομοστατικός Σχεδιασμός και Ανάλυση των Κατασκευών”, Στόχος της παρούσας μεταπτυχιακής εργασίας είναι η προσέγγιση της συμπεριφοράς των πλαστικών αρθρώσεων με πεπερασμένα στοιχεία σε δοκούς ωπλισμένου σκυροδέματος. Αρχικά, γίνεται αναφορά στον τρόπο αντιμετώπισης και υπολογισμού των χαρακτηριστικών των περιοχών των πλαστικών αρθρώσεων από γνωστούς και ευρέως διαδεδομένους κανονισμούς αποτίμησης. Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζονται τα προσομοιώματα, στα οποία και στηρίζεται η λειτουργία του λογισμικού fe77 καθώς και ορισμένα χαρακτηριστικά της αρχής λειτουργίας του. Έπειτα, γίνεται σύγκριση των αποτελεσμάτων του με συγκεκριμένα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα που αφορούν αμφιέρειστες δοκούς ωπλισμένου σκυροδέματος. Αφού, λοιπόν, διαπιστώνεται η ασφάλεια και η ορθότητα των αποτελεσμάτων του σε αρκετά μεγάλο βαθμό σε σχέση με τα πειραματικά αποτελέσματα, γίνεται σαφές ότι αποτελεί ένα αξιόπιστο εργαλείο για την έγκυρη πρόβλεψη της συμπεριφοράς των δομικών στοιχείων και κατ’ επέκταση τη μελέτη των περιοχών των πλαστικών αρθρώσεων, που αποτελεί και αντικείμενο της εργασίας. Η διερεύνηση της συμπεριφοράς των περιοχών των πλαστικών αρθρώσεων γίνεται σε μία σειρά δομικών στοιχείων προβόλων που υποβάλλονται σε μονοτονική φόρτιση με ένα γραμμικό φορτίο στο άκρο του στοιχείου, έπειτα από μη – γραμμική ανάλυση με τρισδιάστατα πεπερασμένα στοιχεία στο λογισμικό fe77. Τα δομικά στοιχεία έχουν τα ίδια γεωμετρικά χαρακτηριστικά, ενώ κάθε ένα διαφέρει ως προς ένα μηχανικό χαρακτηριστικό, του οποίου και η επιρροή διερευνάται στη συμπεριφορά της πλαστικής άρθρωσης. Ως βάση για τις συγκρίσεις και την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων σχετικά με την επιρροή των διάφορων μηχανικών χαρακτηριστικών στη συμπεριφορά της πλαστικής άρθρωσης, επιλέγεται ένα «πρότυπο» δομικό στοιχείο (πρόβολος Ι), το οποίο και ικανοποιεί τις απαιτήσεις όπλισης του Ελληνικού Κανονισμού Ωπλισμένου Σκυροδέματος 2000 (Ε.Κ.Ω.Σ. 2000). Η διερεύνηση της συμπεριφοράς της περιοχής μέσα στην οποία αναμένεται να γίνει η κατανάλωση του μεγαλύτερου μέρους της σεισμικής ενέργειας, επιτυγχάνεται με κατάλληλη αυξομείωση της τιμής του εν λόγω μεγέθους κάθε φορά σε σχέση με τον «πρότυπο» πρόβολο. Τα χαρακτηριστικά εκείνα που έχουν επιρροή στη συμπεριφορά της περιοχής της πλαστικής άρθρωσης και εξετάζονται στην παρούσα εργασία είναι τα εξής: ποσοστό θλιβόμενου οπλισμού, ποσοστό εφελκυόμενου οπλισμού, θλιπτική αντοχή σκυροδέματος, τάση διαρροής χάλυβα διαμήκους οπλισμού και ποσοστό εγκάρσιου οπλισμού (συνδετήρων). Από τις αναλύσεις των δομικών στοιχείων προκύπτουν αποτελέσματα από τα οποία και εξάγονται το διάγραμμα φορτίου – μετακίνησης στο άκρο του προβόλου, οι παραμορφώσεις των εφελκυόμενων χαλύβων κατά μήκος του προβόλου και ο δείκτης πλαστιμότητας των μετακινήσεων μδ. Από τη σύγκριση των εξαγομένων, συμπεραίνεται η επιρροή κάθε χαρακτηριστικού που εξετάζεται στη συμπεριφορά της περιοχής κατανάλωσης ενέργειας. Παράλληλα, γίνεται και αποτίμηση των δομικών στοιχείων σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις του Ελληνικού Κανονισμού Επεμβάσεων (ΚΑΝ.ΕΠΕ) και του Ευρωκώδικα 8 – Μέρος 3. Από τα αποτελέσματα των αποτιμήσεων εξάγονται οι δείκτες πλαστιμότητας γωνιών στροφής χορδής και επομένως και μετακινήσεων, δεδομένης της γεωμετρίας. Έτσι γίνεται μία σύγκριση σε μεγέθη δεικτών πλαστιμότητας προκειμένου να διερευνηθεί η σχέση αποτελεσμάτων κανονισμών που βασίζονται στις παραδοχές της επιπεδότητας των διατομών και αποτελεσμάτων μη – γραμμικής ανάλυσης που προσομοιώνει την πραγματική συμπεριφορά του δομικού στοιχείου., The purpose of the present master thesis is to approach the behavior of plastic hinges that develop in reinforced concrete beams, with non-linear 3-d finite elements analysis. In the first chapter, the subject of the thesis is briefly presented. An introduction to the meaning of ductility and plastic hinge is included, emphasizing the significance of the plastic hinge in the behavior of the structures during the earthquake. The second chapter of the thesis includes the theory and the criteria, which are adopted by some of the most well - known assessment and retrofit codes for the prediction of the behavior of the plastic hinges’ regions. The characteristics of plastic hinges (such as yield chord rotation angle, ultimate chord rotation angle, plastic hinge length, yield curvature, ultimate curvature, etc.) and the way they are approached, are included in the chapter specifically for: FEMA 356, ATC-40, NZSEE-2006, Eurocode 8 - Part 3, Greek Retrofit Code, CNR-DT 200/2004. In the third chapter, the non-linear 3-d finite element analysis software, fe77, on which results the assessment of the plastic hinges regions is based, is presented. The concrete and steel numerical modelling, which the software is based on, are presented. The numerical strategy for the crack opening and closure, which is adopted is also discussed. After the comparison of the results of the software with the respective experimental ones, the safety and the accuracy of its results is deduced. The experimental results, which were used for the comparison, included six of the simply supported reinforced concrete beams, which were investigated by Vecchio & Shim in the paper “Experimental and Analytical Reexamination of Classic Concrete Beam Tests” (2004). Therefore, the software is thought to be a reliable “tool”, which can be used for the valid prediction of the structural elements’ behavior and subsequently for the assessment and investigation of the regions of plastic hinges, which is the purpose of the present thesis. The investigation of the behavior of the plastic hinges’ region is performed in a series of cantilever beams, under monotonic loading on the edge of the beam, by non-linear analysis with 3-d finite elements in the fe77 software. The cantilever beams investigated, have the same geometric characteristics (height, width, effective height, length and shear span). Every beam has a mechanical characteristic, which is different to the ones of the other beams respectively. Through the change of the value the investigated mechanical characteristic, its effect on the behavior of the region of plastic hinge is deduced. The comparison is made between the cantilever beam I, which is reinforced according to the provisions of the Greek Reinforced Concrete Code 2000 and each beam, which differs with the aforementioned on a mechanical characteristic. So, through this comparison, the deduction of useful conclusions about the effect of the mechanical characteristic on the behavior of plastic hinge is drawn. The characteristics, whose effect on the behavior of the plastic hinge is investigated are: the ratio of compression reinforcement, the ratio of tensional reinforcement, the concrete compressive strength, the yield strength of the longitudinal reinforcement steel and the ratio of the transverse reinforcement. The effect of each of the aforementioned characteristics is investigated through the reduction and the increase of its value respectively in the cantilever beam I. From the 3-d, non – linear finite element analysis of the structural elements, the force – displacement relation of the edge of the cantilever beam, the strains of the longitudinal tensional reinforcement along the beam and the displacement ductility factor μδ are evaluated.. From the comparison of the deduced results between the beams, a conclusion can be easily reached, concerning the effect of each characteristic investigated, on the behavior of the region of the structural element, across which the consumption of seismic energy takes place. In addition to the analytical assessment, an appraisal according to the provisions of the Greek Retrofit Code and Eurocode 8 – Part 3 is also performed. The chord rotation angle ductility factor is calculated, since in the assessment results of the aforementioned Codes, the yield chord rotation angle and the ultimate chord rotation angle are evaluated. Due to the beam geometry, the chord rotation angle ductility factor at the end section is equal to the displacement ductility factor at the edge of the cantilever. So, a comparison can be made so as to investigate the relation between the results of the Codes and the results of the non-linear analysis. It’s worth mentioning that useful conclusions are drawn after the comparison between results based on the assumption of the sections remaining plane during yield and ultimate state and results depending on the non – linear analysis, which simulates the “real” behavior of the structural element∙ these are all included in the sixth chapter. In this chapter, one may also see the conclusions about the effect of the mechanical characteristics on the behavior of structural element both from the point of view the assessment based on the Codes and the ones based on the non – linear analysis., Μαρία Καρδαλά

Διεπιστημονικό-Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (Δ.Π.Μ.Σ.) “Επιστήμη και Τεχνολογία Υλικών”, Ο χαλκός αποτέλει ένα από τα μέταλλα με τις περισσότερες τεχνολογικές εφαρμογές από καλώδια και ολοκληρωμένα κυκλώματα έως φωτοβολταϊκά και ηλιακά κελιά. Παρόλο που ο χαλκός θεωρείται ένα από τα χημικά σταθερότερα μέταλλα, αντιδρά εύκολα σε ελαφρώς αλκαλικά διαλύματα παράγοντας υποξείδιο του χαλκού, οξείδιο ή και υδροξείδιο του χαλκού. Τα οξείδια του χαλκού είναι συνήθως σταθερά, ωστόσο, σε αλκαλικό περιβάλλον μετασχηματίζονται σε ευδιάλυτα προϊόντα. Χάρη στις ημιαγώγιμες και φωτοαγώγιμες ιδιότητές τους, τα συγκεκριμένα οξείδια έχουν μεγάλη τεχνολογική σημασία, βρίσκοντας εφαρμογές σε φωτοβολταϊκά συστήματα και ηλιακά κελιά. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία ερευνήθηκε ο σχηματισμός των οξειδίων του χαλκού σε αλκαλικά διαλύματα οξικών ανιόντων μέσω των μεθόδων κυκλικής βολταμμετρίας, αναδιαλυτικής βολταμμετρίας, εμπέδησης, και μετρήσεων χωρητικότητας. Κατά την ανοδική οξείδωση του χαλκού, ένα φιλμ διπλής σύστασης που αποτελείται από υποξείδιο και οξείδιο ή και υδροξείδιο του χαλκού, σχηματίζεται πάνω στην επιφάνεια του ηλεκτροδίου. Το φιλμ το οποίο εμφανίζει πορώδη δομή, δομείται από ένα εσωτερικό στρώμα υποξειδίου του χαλκού και ένα εξωτερικό στρώμα οξειδίου ή και υδροξειδίου του χαλκού και επηρεάζεται σημαντικά από τη διάλυση σε ανοδικά δυναμικά. Βάσει των πειραματικών αποτελεσμάτων, καταστρώθηκε ένα κινητικό μοντέλο το οποίο περιγράφει ικανοποιητικά την ηλεκτροχημική συμπεριφορά του χαλκού σε ανοδικά διαλύματα οξικών ανιόντων., Copper has a wide range of technological uses from integrated circuits and wires to exchangers and solar cells. Although copper is considered to be a noble metal, it reacts in neutral or alkaline solutions, producing cuprous oxide, copper oxide, and copper hydroxide. Copper oxides are genuinely stable though they can be soluble in slightly alkaline solutions by forming soluble products. They also show semiconducting and photoreactive properties which is why they are used in many technological applications in solar cells, photovoltaic systems etc. In the present thesis, the formation of copper oxides in alkaline acetate solutions was studied with the use of the electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltammetry, anodic polarization, cathodic stripping, impedance, and capacitance measurements. It is concluded that a double-layered, passivating film of two anodic oxides which are cuprous oxide and copper oxide and hydroxide is formed on the copper surface. The film which has a porous structure consists of an inner layer of cuprous oxide and an outer layer of copper oxide and hydroxide, is highly affected by dissolution of both oxides in high anodic potentials. A based on the obtained experimental data kinetic model, which describes sufficiently the electrochemical behavior of copper electrodes in alkaline acetate solutions, was structured., Ιωάννα-Μαρία Κ. Διεπιστημονικό-Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (Δ.Π.Μ.Σ.) “Επιστήμη και Τεχνολογία Υλικών”, Ο σεπιόλιθος, Mg8Si12O30(OH)4(OH2)4, και ο παλυγορσκίτης, Mg5Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4, είναι φυλλο‐ πυριτικές ορυκτές άργιλοι με πολλές εφαρμογές. Εχουν ινώδη μορφολογία και χαρακτηριστική κυψελωτή δομή με εναλλασσόμενες δοκίδες και σήραγγες που συγκρατούν διαφορετικούς τύπους Η2Ο και προσδίδουν στα υλικά μεγάλη ειδική επιφάνεια. Οι διαστάσεις των σηράγγων στον σεπιόλιθο και τον παλυγορσκίτη διαφέρουν. Ενώ στον σεπιόλιθο οι οκταεδρικές θέσεις των φύλλων καταλαμβάνονται αποκλειστικά από ιόντα Μg, στον παλυγορσκίτη μπορεί να καταλαμβάνονται και από ιόντα Al ή Fe(ΙΙΙ). Η διακύμανση στη σύσταση της οκταεδρικής στιβάδας αποτελεί μια σημαντική παράμετρο στην διάκριση σεπιόλιθου‐παλυγορσκίτη, καθώς και των πολυσωμάτων τους που περιγράφονται από τους τύπους yMg5Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4(1‐y) [xMg2Fe2(1‐x)Mg2Al2]Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4 ή y’Mg8Si12O30(OH)4(OH2)4(1‐y)[xMg2Fe2(1‐x)Mg2Al2] Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4. Προηγούμενες μελέτες με τεχνικές χημικής ανάλυσης, XRD και δονητικής φασματοσκοπίας δείχνουν ότι δεν είναι εύκολο να μελετηθεί με ακρίβεια η δομή αργίλων της οικογενείας σεπιόλιθου‐παλυγορσκίτη που εμφανίζουν μεικτό τριοκταεδρικό‐διοκταεδρικό χαρακτήρα. Στην παρούσα εργασία μελετάται με μεθόδους θερμοβαρυτικής ανάλυσης (ΤGA) και φασματοσκοπίας υπερύθρου (IR) η διάκριση σεπιόλιθου‐παλυγορσκίτη και ο πολυσωματισμός αργίλων με ενδιάμεσες συστάσεις. Η προσέγγιση των κινητικών μεγεθών κάθε σταδίου (κυρίως της ενέργειας ενεργοποίησης, Εα) με τη μέθοδο του Kissinger, συμβάλλει στην διάκριση των υλικών και παρέχει ενδείξεις για την ύπαρξη (του μέχρι τώρα άγνωστου) τριοκταεδρικού παλυγορσκίτη. Γίνεται προσπάθεια συσχέτισης των σταδίων αφυδάτωσης των αργίλων, όπως αυτά εντοπίζονται με μεθόδους ΤGA, με τις συνεπαγόμενες δομικές αλλαγές. Η φασματοσκοπία εγγύς υπερύθρου (ΝIR) χρησιμοποιείται για τον δομικό χαρακτηρισμό και παρέχει διακριτούς δείκτες για τον προσδιορισμό των παραμέτρων y και x που συνδέονται αντίστοιχα με το τριοκταεδρικό (Mg) και το διοκταεδρικό (Al, Fe) κλάσμα. Ειδικότερα, η απομάκρυνση του ζεολιθικού και επιφανειακού Η2Ο στους δύο τύπους αργίλων πραγματοποιείται ως τους 130 οC και είναι αντιστρεπτή διαδικασία. Οι θερμοκρασίες απομάκρυνσης του πρώτου κρυσταλλικού ΟΗ2 (150‐330 οC) η οποία επιφέρει και την χαρακτηριστική αναδίπλωση της δομής, είναι πιο ενδεικτική για την διάκριση σεπιόλιθου‐ παλυγορσκίτη με TGA, αν και χωρίς σημαντική διαφοροποίηση στις τιμές Εα (100‐140 kJ/mol). Καθώς αυξάνει ο τριοκταεδρικός χαρακτήρας, η απομάκρυνση του πρώτου ΟΗ2 ολοκληρώνεται σε υψηλότερες θερμοκρασίες. Στα υλικά μεικτού τύπου το στάδιο αυτό εμφανίζεται ως σύνθετο με πολλαπλά επικαλυπτόμενα σταδία. Η αποβολή του δεύτερου κρυσταλλικού ΟΗ2 πραγμα‐ τοποιείται στους 400‐500 οC (Εα=170‐200 kJ/mol), ενώ περαιτέρω αφυδροξυλίωση των υλικών λαμβάνει χώρα σε υψηλότερες θερμοκρασίες (>500 οC). Στον τριοκταεδρικό σεπιόλιθο (y=1) το στάδιο απομάκρυνσης των ΟΗ παρατηρείται στους ~750 οC ενώ στον διοκταεδρικό παλυγορ‐ σκίτη (y=0) κάτω από τους 500 οC. Η παρουσία σεπιόλιθου σε παλυγορσκίτη με υψηλό τριοκταεδρικό ποσοστό (y=0.63) δεν επιβεβαιώνεται από το προφίλ της αφυδροξυλίωσης και αυτό αποτελεί ένδειξη ύπαρξης τριοκτεδρικού παλυγορσκίτη. Η συστηματικότερη μελέτη του σεπιόλιθου κατά την απομάκρυνση του πρώτου ΟΗ2 με δυναμικούς ρυθμούς θέρμανσης (Ηi‐Res TGA) βελτιώνει την διάκριση αλληλοεπικαλυπτόμενων σταδίων κρυσταλλικής αφυδάτωσης (150‐300 οC). Η δυνατότητα αυτή σε σχέση με την συνεργατικότητα της δομικής αναδίπλωσης ανοίγει νέους δρόμους για την περαιτέρω μελέτη αυτών των αργίλων και την χρήση τους σε νέα υβριδικά νανοϋλικά., Sepiolite and palygorskite are phyllosilicate clay minerals with characteristic modulated structure and fibrous‐like morphology. A main feature of their lattice is the presence of tunnels, that host different types of H2O, justifying the large specific area of these materials. Another essential feature of the structures is the occupation of their octahedral sheet by different types of cations. Ιn sepiolite the octahedral sites are occupied solely by Mg ions, whereas in palygorskite they may also be occupied by Al of Fe(III) ions. The variation in the composition of the octahedral sheet is an important parameter in discriminating sepiolite from palygorskite and their polysomatic intermediates which can be described by the formulas yMg5Si8O20 (OH)2(OH2)4(1‐y)[xMg2Fe2(1‐x)Mg2Al2]Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4 or y’Mg8Si12O30(OH)4(OH2)4(1‐y)[x Mg2Fe2(1‐x) Mg2Al2] Si8O20 (OH)2(OH2)4. Previous studies, based on chemical analysis, XRD and vibrational spectroscopy, have indicated that the structural elucidation of palygorskite‐sepiolite clays with mixed trioctahedral‐dioctahedral character is not straightforward. In this study we examine the polysomatic structure of sepiolite, palygorskite and intermediate materials with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The analysis of the kinetic characteristics of each dehydration step, especially the activation energy (Ea) by the method of Kissinger, is suggesting the existance of the hitherto unknown trioctahedral palygorskite. An attempt is made to correlate the various dehydration stages of the clays, determined by TGΑ, to their associated structural changes. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) which has been shown to provide distinct indicators for determining y, y’ and x which are connected with the trioctahedral (Mg) and dioctahedral (Al, Fe) fractions, respectively, has been used as the structure diagnostic technique. In all clays investigated, the removal of surface and zeolitic H2O takes place below 130 οC and is a reversible process. The amount of H2O in the tunnels at ambient or elevated temperatures depends on relative humidity. The removal of the first crystalline OH2 which induces the folding of the structure occurs in the 150‐330 oC range and is more indicative of the polysomatic nature of the clay. It is observed that as the trioctahedral character increases, the removal of the first OH2 moves to higher temperatures, despite the weak dependence of Ea on composition (100‐140 kJ/mol). In the mixed‐type clays, this step exhibits a more complex profile of overlapping dehydration events. The second crystalline OH2 dehydrates at 400‐500 οC (Εα=170‐200 kJ/mol), and further dehydroxylation occurs at higher temperatures (>500 οC). In trioctahedral sepiolite (y=1) the OH‐removal is observed at ~750 οC, while in dioctahedral palygorskite (y=0) it is observed below 500 οC. Cortrary to earlier reports, the presence of sepiolite polysomes in a palygorskite with high trioctahedral character (y=0.63) is not confirmed by this dehydroxylation profile, suggesting that trioctahedral palygorskitic polysomes are instead present. The systematic study of the first crystalline OH2 dehydration of sepiolite with dynamic heating rates (Ηi‐Res TGA) allowed for the better separation of the overlapping events during heating at 150‐300 οC. The complexity of this dehydration step, coupled to the simplicity and cooperativity of the structural folding opens new possibilities for the study of these clays. 540 σ., In this thesis the effect of anisotropy on undrained sand behaviour is investigated under monotonic and cyclic torsional shear in the hollow cylinder apparatus of the National Technical University of Athens. Soil anisotropy is of paramount importance when soil behaviour is considered with the aid of the hollow cylinder apparatus which allows control of principal stress rotation during loading. Tests were performed initially under simple shear conditions; however, the anisotropic stress-strain behaviour of the soils under consideration were also examined during shearing at fixed directions of the major principal stress with respect to the vertical and during shearing with continuous rotation of the principal stress direction. The latter condition is associated with most geotechnical works. To simulate the behaviour of naturally occurring sand deposits emphasis was placed on the consolidation procedure followed in the laboratory. It is commonly acknowledged that these materials are inherently anisotropic due to the fabric obtained during deposition and its evolution during their geological history e.g. anisotropic consolidation. The fabric continuously evolves during various loading conditions resulting to further induced anisotropy. To simulate natural deposits specimens were anisotropically consolidated in the laboratory before the application of various loading conditions. Attention was paid on the comparison of the response between isotropically and anisotropically consolidated specimens during. The undrained response of the sand specimens was assessed at various stress levels, principal stress directions, cyclic stress levels, densities and consolidation stress ratios. The influence of these parameters was considered for three different sands under the same experimental procedures hence the experimental results in this thesis represent a useful dataset for researchers to use in advanced numerical modelling and practicing engineers to assess the influence of anisotropic consolidation on the response of development and infrastructure in or founded on sand deposits. The results of the monotonic torsional shear tests showed that anisotropic consolidation does not alter the mobilised angle of shearing resistance at failure, phase transformation and peak shear stress. However, the stiffness characteristics and the stress paths of the sand specimens differ in a number of ways depending on the adopted consolidation path. Anisotropically consolidated specimens (AC), appear to be less stiff and exhibit higher shear stress and lower excess pore water pressure compared with isotropically consolidated specimens (IC). Most importantly, anisotropic consolidation greatly affects the response of loose sands; collapse was observed for anisotropically consolidated specimens in contrast with brittle behaviour exhibited by their isotropically consolidated counterparts. Moreover the shear stress level reached at the end of various anisotropic consolidation paths has been found to affect significantly the shear stress increase under undrained conditions required to initiate unstable response; this observation highlights that should the in situ conditions be anisotropic, as will usually be the case, for engineered structures, in, or founded on, loose sand engineering design should take into account that such sand deposits may be prone to collapse even for small increases in shear stress under undrained loading conditions. The results of the cyclic torsional shear tests showed that the cyclic resistance of sand specimens is strongly affected by anisotropic consolidation and it is less than half of the cyclic strength of isotropically consolidated material at the loose state; this trend reverses at the dense state. These experimental findings suggest that the consolidation conditions should not be ignored in geotechnical design while extra attention is required for the case of anisotropically consolidated loose to medium dense sand deposits which would exhibit lower earthquake resistance. Cyclic strength resistance increases with density irrespective of consolidation path while for loose sand specimens the cyclic strength resistance decreases with decreasing consolidation stress ratio. Moreover, it was found that AC specimens develop at all densities a terminal pore water pressure which is less than 40% of the initial effective stress and fail due to axial strain accumulation contrary to IC specimens which reach terminal pore pressure ratios higher than 70% and fail due to shear strain accumulation. According to these results, the problem of stability of engineering structures founded on or in sand deposits should not be approached solely by designing on the principle of keeping the induced pore pressure ratio below 100%. The ratio of the terminal excess pore water pressure to the initial mean effective stress is described as a function of consolidation stress ratio and density while the development of excess pore water pressure during cyclic loading is uniquely defined for all tests as a function of normalised shear work imparted to the sand during cyclic loading. The comparison made between monotonic and cyclic torsional shear tests showed that the behaviour of anisotropically consolidated loose sand specimens under cyclic torsional loading can be interpreted in terms of a bounding line, namely the instability line defined in monotonic loading tests, in the vicinity of which a sudden increase in the rate of excess pore water pressure and strain accumulation is observed and the sand strain-softens. This pattern of cyclic behaviour is independent of the adopted consolidation path. However, for AC specimens this unstable response is arrested at phase transformation and the sand specimens show a stable or temporarily stable effective stress cycle at low and high consolidation stress ratios respectively while IC specimens exhibit initial liquefaction after strain-softening. For both IC and AC specimens at higher densities, the phase transformation line, PTL, defined under cyclic loading appears to coincide with the PTL defined under monotonic loading irrespective of the consolidation path followed. The process begins with the description quote theories and experimental methods, used to calculate the uniform stability pressure of the tunnel face. Afterwards there is a reference to the results of studies, which examine qualitatively and quantitatively the influence of fiberglass anchors to the stability of the tunnel face through analysis with finite elements. Also the assumptions and description of the simulation problem by finite elements using the program Abaqus are presented. Furthermore, the results of analyses, and a proposal of a way to link the anchors density d with the equivalent uniform support tunnel face pressure through tables and diagrams are presented. 336 σ., Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής, μελετήθηκαν σε συνθήκες υγρής βυθισμένης καλλιέργειας (ΥΒΚ) δύο είδη μακρομυκήτων με σκοπό τη βιοτεχνολογική τους αξιοποίηση ως φυσική πηγή βιολειτουργικών διατροφικών συστατικών. Συγκεκριμένα, διερευνήθηκε το εδώδιμο Pleurotus ostreatus, καθώς και το Ganoderma australe, το γένος του οποίου θεωρείται από τα σημαντικότερα ως προς την παραγωγή φαρμακευτικών ενώσεων. Τα στελέχη των παραπάνω μακρομυκήτων που μελετήθηκαν για πρώτη φορά, συλλέχτηκαν από τον Ελλαδικό χώρο και βρίσκονται κατατεθειμένα στη Συλλογή Καλλιεργειών ATHUM του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (ATHUM 4438 και ATHUM 4345, αντίστοιχα). Ο αρχικός στόχος της μελέτης προσανατολίστηκε στον προσδιορισμό του καταλληλότερου μέσου ανάπτυξης για μέγιστη παραγωγής βιομάζας από τα δύο στελέχη μακρομυκήτων. Σε αυτήν την κατεύθυνση, η επιλεκτική αφομοίωση 95 διαφορετικών πηγών άνθρακα από τους μακρομύκητες με τη χρήση της μεγάλης αποδοτικότητας μεταβολικής ανάλυσης FF Biolog επέτρεψε την αρχική χαρτογράφηση του μεταβολισμού τους και τον περεταίρω ορθότερο σχεδιασμό του μέσου ανάπτυξης για την παραγωγή βιομάζας. Αφού αξιολογήθηκαν και διαφορετικές πηγές αζώτου (απλές και σύνθετες), διερευνήθηκε η βέλτιστη σύνθεση του μέσου ανάπτυξης για μέγιστη παραγωγή μυκηλιακής βιομάζας με τη μεθοδολογία της επιφανειακής απόκρισης (RSM), βασιζόμενη σε κεντρικό πειραματικό σχεδιασμό. Μετά τη δοκιμή του άριστου μέσου ανάπτυξης σε κλίμακα βιοαντιδραστήρα διαλείποντος έργου συνεχούς ανάδευσης όγκου 20 L, η παραγωγή βιομάζας έλαβε τη μέγιστη τιμή 10.1 g/L μετά από 112 h για την περίπτωση του G. australe, και 39.2 g/L μετά από 68 h καλλιέργειας για το P. ostreatus. Η παραγωγικότητα δε, αυξήθηκε κατά 60% και 79%, αντίστοιχα για το G. australe και το P. ostreatus. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη το έντονο ενδιαφέρον για την αξιοποίηση των μακρομυκήτων στη βιομηχανία τροφίμων και φαρμάκων, μελετήθηκε ακόμα η σύσταση της βιομάζας από την ανάπτυξη των δύο στελεχών μακρομυκήτων στο βιοαντιδραστήρα ως προς το περιεχόμενό τους σε βιολειτουργικά συστατικά (π.χ. διαιτητικές ίνες, α- και β- γλουκάνες, πρωτεΐνες, διατροφικά πολύτιμα λιπαρά οξέα) Μάλιστα, στις μυκηλιακές δομές και των δύο στελεχών μακρομυκήτων ανακτήθηκαν φαρμακοδιατροφικά συστατικά που σε πολλές περιπτώσεις τα ποσοστά τους βρέθηκαν υψηλότερα σε σχέση με των αντίστοιχων καρποσωμάτων που απαντώνται στην φύση. Παράλληλα, με σκοπό την οικονομική συμφέρουσα μέγιστη απόδοση διατροφικά πολύτιμων βιοενεργών πολυσακχαριτών, μελετήθηκε η επίδραση διαφορετικών πηγών άνθρακα και αζώτου στο μέσο ανάπτυξης για την παραγωγή αυτών σε συνθήκες ΥΒΚ. Τέλος, το αντικείμενο της διατριβής κινήθηκε στην επιστημονική περιοχή των φυσικών προϊόντων μικροβιακής προέλευσης, την απομόνωσή τους και τη δομική ταυτοποίησή τους. Με σκοπό την απομόνωση και ταυτοποίηση των μεταβολιτών που παράχτηκαν από τους δύο μακρομύκητες σε συνθήκες YBK σε βιοαντιδραστήρα διεξάχθηκε εκχύλιση της συλλεγόμενης βιομάζας με κατάλληλους οργανικούς διαλύτες. Ο χρωματογραφικός διαχωρισμός των εκχυλισμάτων βασίστηκε κυρίως σε χρωματογραφικές τεχνικές [π.χ. υγρή χρωματογραφία ανοιχτής στήλης, παρασκευαστική TLC και HPLC, υγρή χρωματογραφία μέσης πίεσης (MPLC), χρωματογραφία μοριακού αποκλεισμού σε στήλη Sephadex LH-20, χρωματογραφία προσρόφησης με ρητίνη τύπου XAD-4, χρωματογραφία κατανομής με φυγοκέντριση (FCPC)]. Για την ταυτοποίηση των ουσιών που απομονώθηκαν χρησιμοποιήθηκαν φασματοσκοπικές τεχνικές (13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, και 2D NMR, ESI-HRMS), χημικές συσχετίσεις σε συνδυασμό με τις GC/MS αναλύσεις και συγκρίσεις με βιβλιογραφικά δεδομένα. Όλοι οι μεταβολίτες που απομονώθηκαν βρίσκουν ευρύ φάσμα εφαρμογών στη βιομηχανία τροφίμων, φαρμάκων και καλλυντικών βασιζόμενοι σε βιβλιογραφικά δεδομένα. Συγκεκριμένα, από το μυκήλιο του G. australe, απομονώθηκαν και ταυτοποιήθηκαν συνολικά 5 μεταβολίτες. 2 τερπενοειδή μόρια και 3 λιπαρά οξέα. Για πρώτη φορά αναφέρεται η παρουσία του 9-παλμιτολεϊκού οξέος και της εργοστα-5,7,22-τριεν-3β-όλης στο μυκήλιο, ενώ το 19-οκτακοσενοϊκό οξύ απομονώθηκε για πρώτη φορά από το G. australe. Από το μυκήλιο του P. ostreatus, απομονώθηκαν και ταυτοποιήθηκαν συνολικά 18 μεταβολίτες, και συγκεκριμένα: λιπαρά οξέα και οι αντίστοιχοι εστέρες τους, 4 φαινολικοί μεταβολίτες, 3 αλκαλοειδή και 2 νουκλεοτίδια. Η trans-3,4-διυδρο-3,4,8-τριυδροξυναφθαλεν-1(2Η)-όνη, το ινδολο-3-καρβοξυλικό οξυ, η 3-φορμύλ-πυρρόλη και το π-υδροξυ-βενζοϊκό οξύ αποτελούν φυσικά προϊόντα που απομονώθηκαν για πρώτη φορά από το P. ostreatus. Συνοψίζοντας, η προτεινόμενη διεργασία ανάπτυξης του G. australe και του P. ostreatus σε συνθήκες YBK οδήγησαν σε υψηλή παραγωγή βιομάζας πλούσια σε βιοενεργούς μεταβολίτες. Επιπλέον, τα ευρήματα της παρούσας διατριβής θέτουν τη βάση και για μια ελκυστικά συμφέρουσα και αποδοτική προσέγγιση παραγωγής αυτών των χρήσιμων φυσικών προϊόντων σε συνθήκες ΥΒΚ σε βιομηχανική κλίμακα., The current dissertation focuses on two promising Greek strains of Basidiomycetes growing in submerged liquid cultures, aiming at their biotechnological application in discovery of natural products. Specifically, it was investigated the cosmopolitan edible Pleurotus ostreatus and the wild, medicinal Ganoderma australe. Both strains which were of Greek origin, were obtained from the ATHUM Culture Collection of Fungi of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (P. ostreatus ATHUM 4438 and G. australe ATHUM 4345) and are studied for the first time. The primary objective of the study was oriented to identify the most suitable culture medium for maximum biomass production for both strains. The Biolog FF MicroPlate was used to screen 95 different carbon sources for growth monitoring. The pattern of substrate catabolism formed a substrate assimilation fingerprint which was useful in selecting components for media optimization of maximum biomass production. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on the central composite design was applied to explore the optimum concentrations of carbon and nitrogen sources of culture medium. When the improved culture medium was tested in a 20 L stirred tank bioreactor, the biomass reached its maximum value 10.1 g/L after 112 h and 39.2 g/L after 68 h of growth in the cases of G. australe and P. ostreatus, respectively. Additionally, the productivity was increased by 60% and 79% for the G. australe and P. ostreatus bioprocess, respectively.Considering the interest of mushrooms for using them as food supplements, this work also demonstrates the nutraceutical composition (e.g. dietary fibers, α- and β- glucans, proteins, essential fatty acids) of biomass obtained by submerged fermentation of the studied strains in bioreactor. Indeed, in many cases, nutraceuticals were obtained in highest levels in the mycelium comparing with those of corresponding fruitbodies found in nature. In addition, it was investigated the effect of carbon and nitrogen sources on the production of bioactive dietary fibres and glucans in submerged cultures of both strains.Finally, this study presents the isolation and identification of compounds derived from biomass obtained by submerged fermentation of both strains in bioreactor. For this purpose, the biomass extracted with suitable organic solvents. The chromatographic separation of extracts was mainly based on different techniques [e.g. flash column chromatography, preparative TLC and HPLC, medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, adsorption chromatography using as sorbent resin XAD-4, fast centrifugal partition chromatography (FCPC)]. The pure compounds were elucidated with 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, 2D NMR-spectroscopic analyses, ESI-HRMS, chemical correlations combined with GC/MS experiments and direct comparison with the respective literature. Based on existing literature data, all compounds isolated exert numerous health benefits. Specifically, the fractionation of the G. australe extract led to the isolation of 5 metabolites; 2 terpenoids and 3 fatty acids. It is reported for the first time the presence of 9-palmitoleic acid and ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3β-ol in the mycelium of G. australe, while 19-octacosenoic acid has not been isolated again from this mushroom strain. Besides, from the mycelium of P. ostreatus, 19 metabolites (fatty acids and their esters, 4 phenolic metabolites, 2 nucleotides and 3 alkaloids) were isolated and identified. An interesting observation was that trans 3,4-dihydro-3,4,8-trihydroxynapthalen-1(2H)-one, indolo-3-carboxylic acid, 3-formyl-pyrrole and 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid were isolated for the first time from P. ostreatus.From the data presented herein, the findings of this study are regarded valuable, as the established fermentation process led to the efficient production of biomass by the studied strains containing bioactive natural products. "Φυσική και Τεχνολογικές Εφαρμογές", Σκοπός της εργασίας αυτής ήταν η θεωρητική μελέτη της ενεργού διατομής της αντίδρασης 197Au(n,2n)196Au που οδηγεί στον σχηματισμό δύο ενεργειακών σταθμών του 196Au με μεγάλη διαφορά σπιν μεταξύ τους: (1) της μετασταθούς στάθμης με σπιν 12- και (2) της αντίστοιχης βασικής στάθμης με σπιν 2-. Ο θεωρητικός υπολογισμός έγινε για ενέργειες νετρονίων από 8 έως 25 MeV, στα πλαίσια του στατιστικού προτύπου Hauser-Feshbach λαμβάνοντας υπ' όψιν και τον μηχανισμό της άμεσης αντίδρασης και της πρώιμης αποδιέγερσης του πυρήνα με χρήση του προτύπου του Οπτικού Δυναμικού και του προτύπου των Εξιτονίων αντίστοιχα. Για την περιγραφή της πυκνότητας καταστάσεων στο συνεχές των πυρήνων που εμπλέκονται στους υπολογισμούς χρησιμοποιήθηκε το πρότυπο του Γενικευμένου Υπερρευστού στη φαινομενολογική μορφή του, που λαμβάνει υπ' όψιν τα φαινόμενα σύζευξης των νουκλεονίων, την επίδραση της δομής των πυρηνικών φλοιών και τη συλλογική κίνηση των νουκλεονίων με συνεπή τρόπο. Οι υπολογισμοί που παρουσιάζονται στη συγκεκριμένη εργασία έγιναν με χρήση του προγράμματος STAPRE-F, ενώ παράλληλα με αυτή, έγιναν οι αντίστοιχοι θεωρητικοί υπολογισμοί με τα προγράμματα EMPIRE 2.19 και TALYS 1.2, ώστε να γίνει και κάποια σύγκριση των τριών κωδίκων ως προς την ποιότητα των αποτελεσμάτων (η σύγκριση περιέχεται στη συγκεκριμένη εργασία, όχι όμως λεπτομέρειες για τους άλλους δύο κώδικες). Επίσης, από τη σύγκριση των θεωρητικών τιμών με τις υπάρχουσες πειραματικές θα εξαχθούν συμπεράσματα για τη δομή και τις ιδιότητες των ισοτόπων του Au που εμπλέκονται στους υπολογισμούς, αλλά και για την ποιότητα των προτύπων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για την περιγραφή των μηχανισμών αντίδρασης και της περιγραφής της πυκνότητας καταστάσεων στο συνεχές., The purpose of this study was the theoretical calculation of the cross section of the reaction 197Au(n,2n)196Au that leads to the formation of two levels of 196Au that present large spin difference: (1) the isomeric state with spin 12- and (2) the corresponding ground state with spin 2-. The theoretical cross section calculations were performed in the energy range between 8 and 25 MeV in the framework of the Hauser-Feshbach theory taking into account the direct reaction mechanism and the pre-compound nuclear processes, within the framework of the optical model and the exciton model respectively. The level densities of the nuclei involved in the calculations were treated within the Generalized Superfluid Model (GSM) in its phenomenological version which takes into account superconductive pairing correlations, shell effects and collective enhancement of the level density of the nucleus in a consistent way. The calculations were performed using the STAPRE-F code, while simultaneously, the same calculations were performed using the codes EMPIRE 2.19 and TALYS 1.2, in order to compare how the three codes implement the models used (the comparison is included in the present study but not details on the calculations with the other two codes). Furthermore, from the comparison of the theoretical cross section values with the corresponding experimental data, interesting information can be derived on the structure and properties of the Αu isotopes involved in the calculations and on the quality of the models used., Μαρία Κ. Ερευνητικά όπως προκύπτει από τη μέχρι τώρα πορεία τους, οι τρεις περιοχές κινήθηκαν εντελώς ανεξάρτητα. Το ενδεχόμενο σύζευξης και συνεξέτασης αυτών των περιοχών παρέχεται μέσα από την ανάπτυξη ενός δυναμικού μοντέλου αποτελεσματικότητας. Στα πλαίσιο της κριτικής που δέχονται τα θεωρητικά μοντέλα εκπαιδευτικής αποτελεσματικότητας προκύπτει η ανάγκη για επέκτασή τους με την ένταξη σε αυτά παραγόντων που επιδρούν στην επίδοση των μαθητών. Η παρούσα έρευνα αποτελεσματικότητας η οποία υποστηρίζει την ανάγκη για επέκταση των μοντέλων αυτών διερευνά κατά πόσο η επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση των εκπαιδευτικών και το σχολικό κλίμα επιδρούν στην επίδοση μαθητών της Β’ Λυκείου. Σημειώνεται ότι σε αυτή την έρευνα ως σχολικό κλίμα εκλαμβάνεται η διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά εκπαιδευτικού και διευθυντή εστιάζοντας έτσι μόνο στην κοινωνική διάσταση του κλίματος. Συγκεκριμένα η έρευνα μέσα στα πλαίσια ενός πολυπίπεδου μοντέλου επιδιώκει να δώσει απαντήσεις στα ακόλουθα ερωτήματα. Α) Η επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση των εκπαιδευτικών επιδρά στην αποτελεσματικότητα όπως αυτή εκφράζεται μέσα από την επίδοση των μαθητών τους στο μάθημα της ελληνικής γλώσσας; Β) Η διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά σε επίπεδο σχολείου και τάξης όπως εκδηλώνεται από το διευθυντή και τους εκπαιδευτικούς αντίστοιχα επιδρά στην επίδοση των μαθητών; Γ) Η διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του διευθυντή στο επίπεδο του σχολείου (σχολικό κλίμα) επιδρά στη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του εκπαιδευτικού μέσα στην τάξη (κλίμα τάξης); Σε ό,τι αφορά στη μεθοδολογία, για τη διεξαγωγή της έρευνας χρησιμοποιήθηκαν μέθοδοι ποσοτικής έρευνας. Συγκεκριμένα η ανάλυση των δεδομένων έγινε με τη χρήση του στατιστικού προγράμματος SPSS, του προγράμματος Mplus για την ανάπτυξη πολυεπίπεδων μοντέλων δομικών εξισώσεων και του προγράμματος MLwiΝ για πολυεπίπεδη ανάλυση. Η χρήση της πολυεπίπεδης ανάλυσης αποσκοπούσε στον εντοπισμό των επιδράσεων που ασκούν επί της αποτελεσματικότητας οι μεταβλητές που μετρούν την επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση και τη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά (κλίμα). Η έρευνα διεξήχθη κατά τη σχολική χρονιά 2005- 2006 σε σχολεία της Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης. Αρχικά με τη χρήση της κατά στάδιο δειγματοληψίας (stage sampling) έγινε η επιλογή 19 Λυκείων από τα 28 δημόσια λύκεια που λειτουργούσαν παγκύπρια στη ελεύθερη Κύπρο κατά την πιο πάνω σχολική χρονιά. Στους μαθητές της Β΄ Λυκείου χορηγήθηκε στην αρχή και στο τέλος της χρονιάς ένα εξεταστικό δοκίμιο στο μάθημα των Νέων Ελληνικών. Συνολικά 2603 μαθητές συμμετείχαν στην έρευνα. Στους ίδιους μαθητές χορηγήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια της σχολικής χρονιάς η ελληνική εκδοχή του ερωτηματολογίου Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) το οποίο μετρά τη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του εκπαιδευτικού μέσα από τις αντιλήψεις των μαθητών. Οι 98 εκπαιδευτικοί που συμμετείχαν στην έρευνα ήταν φιλόλογοι ως προς την ειδικότητα και δίδασκαν στους μαθητές της Β’ Λυκείου το μάθημα των Νέων Ελληνικών κατά τη χρονιά διεξαγωγής της έρευνας. Οι εκπαιδευτικοί κλήθηκαν να συμπληρώσουν δύο ερωτηματολόγια. Συγκεκριμένα συμπλήρωσαν το ερωτηματολόγιο Questionnaire on Principal Interaction (QPI) το οποίο μετρά τη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του διευθυντή και ερωτηματολόγιο που μετρούσε την επαγγελματική τους ικανοποίηση. Τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα ευρήματα της παρούσας έρευνας συνοψίζονται ως ακολούθως. Πρώτον, σε ό,τι αφορά στο αποτέλεσμα πολυεπίπεδου μοντέλου δομικής εξίσωσης για τη σχέση ανάμεσα στη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του διευθυντή και τη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του εκπαιδευτικού, αυτό αποκαλύπτει ότι η διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του διευθυντή έχει μικρή επίδραση στη διαπροσωπική συμπεριφορά του εκπαιδευτικού. (...) Implications of findings are drawn and suggestions for further research are presented. The decision of multilevel models to look only at the impact of observable behaviour in classrooms seems to be justified because there is no impact of job satisfaction on student achievement but a small statistically significant impact of teachers’ interpersonal behaviour. One suggestion for further research is the investigation of job satisfaction in other contexts also it is important to investigate whether job satisfaction has an indirect effect on student achievement through the quality of teaching. This specific study provides a critical review of theoretical models of educational effectiveness and claims that there is a need to expand them. An effectiveness study investigating the impact of teacher job satisfaction and interpersonal behaviour on language achievement of grade 11 students was conducted. Specifically, it attempts to provide answers to the following three questions: a) Do the interpersonal relations at school and class level influence the students’ outcomes and thereby these two variables should be taken into account in modelling educational effectiveness? b) Does teacher job satisfaction influence teachers’ effectiveness? c) Does principal interpersonal behaviour influence teachers’ interpersonal behaviour? The methodology used to conduct this study, was based on quantitative methods. The data generated by the study, were initially analyzed with SPSS and at the final stage, were analyzed with Structural Equation Modelling-Mplus. In addition, for the purpose of this study a multilevel analysis was also conducted in order to identify the effects of variables measuring job satisfaction and interpersonal behaviour upon achievement. The research was conducted during the school year 2005-2006. An achievement test in the subject of Greek Language was administered to students at the beginning and at the end of this school year. Stage sampling was used to initially select 19 out of 28 secondary schools in Cyprus. In total 2603 students participated in this study and answered the Greek version of the Questionnaire of Teachers Interaction (QTI). The 98 teachers from the Greek department who participated in this study were asked to complete two questionnaires. The Questionnaire of Principal Interaction (QPI) was used to measure teacher and principal interpersonal behaviour. Another questionnaire measuring job satisfaction was also administered to teachers. The most important results of the study are summarized as follows: Structural equation modelling (SEM) approaches were used in order to investigate the relations between principals’ interpersonal behaviour and teachers’ interpersonal behaviour. The results of multilevel SEM analysis revealed that principals’ interpersonal behaviour has a small but not statistically significant effect on teachers’ interpersonal behaviour. Multilevel analysis revealed that job satisfaction and principal interpersonal behaviour were not associated with student achievement. Teacher interpersonal behaviour has a small but statistically significant effect on student achievement. Also, concerning job satisfaction the results of multilevel analysis have shown that there is no impact of job satisfaction on student achievement. One unexpected finding concerning job satisfaction and interpersonal behaviour is that teachers’ job satisfaction (aggregate level) can influence principals’ interpersonal behaviour. This result provides points to the need for further research in relation to situational models of leadership.

Η εργασία επικεντρώνεται κυρίως στη μελέτη της κίνησης του πλοίου στο χώρο με στόχο την απεικόνιση και προβολή στον παγκόσμιο ιστό της συμμετοχής του σε ναυμαχίες ή άλλες επιχειρήσεις. Σκοπός είναι η εφαρμογή να επιτρέπει στον χρήστη να ενημερώνεται για τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα στην ιστορία του θωρηκτού εύκολα και γρήγορα σε ένα φιλικό περιβάλλον. Βασική πηγή των ιστορικών στοιχείων αποτέλεσε το βιβλίο του Ν.Α. Σταθάκη «Θ/Κ “Γ. Αβέρωφ”, Χρονικό του Θωρηκτού της Νίκης» ενώ φωτογραφικό υλικό το οποίο αφορά σε γεγονότα της ζωής του πλοίου παρείχε το Χαροκόπειο Πανεπιστήμιο. Για την αποθήκευση των δεδομένων επιλέχθηκε το λογισμικό ανοιχτού κώδικα PostGIS. Για την απεικόνιση των κινήσεων του πλοίου με πρόσθετη περιγραφική πληροφορία επιλέχθηκε η εφαρμογή Google Maps αλλά και το Google Earth. Με χρήση HTML και Java Script ο χρήστης μπορεί να εισαγάγει σημεία ενδιαφέροντος και να προσθέσει και επιπλέον πληροφορία για αυτά. Το Google Earth δίνει μεταξύ άλλων τη δυνατότητα δημιουργίας kml αρχείου με timestamps το οποίο δείχνει σε κίνηση την πορεία ενός αντικειμένου. Αυτή η δυνατότητα χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την απεικόνιση της Ναυμαχίας της Έλλης με κίνηση., This master thesis constitutes part of the research about the Battleship Averof that is conducted by the Department of Geography of Harokopion University. The thesis is mainly focused on the study of the ship movements through space aiming in the visualization and projection in the World Wide Web of its attendance in naval battles or other operations. The purpose of the application is to allow the user to be informed about the most important events in the history of the battleship easily and in a user-friendly environment. Basic source of historical data constituted the book of N.A. Stathakis “Thorikto “G.Averof”, Chroniko tou thoriktou tis Nikis”, (translation: “Battleship “G.Averof”, The Chronicle of the Battleship of Victory”), and photographic material which concerns in events in the ship’s life and which was provided by the Harokopion University. Additional information was selected via the Internet. The open source software PostGIS was selected for data storage. For the visualization of the movements of the ship with additional descriptive information the applications of Google Maps and Google Earth were selected. Using HTML and Java Script the user can import points of interest and add information about them. Google Earth gives inter alia the capability to create a kml file with timestamps, which shows the course of an object in movement.
