In this article, YouTube videos about the self-identified asexual Michelle serve as a starting point for addressing aspects of asexuality that variously position themselves in regard to concepts of the self. On the one hand, asexuality is included in the field of so-called identity politics; on the other hand, it is considered to be a disruption of the same. From there, I discuss the role of psychoanalysis in this area: is it irrelevant, as e.g. Elizabeth Hanna Hanson would suggest, or – with reference to Alenka ZupanČiČ – might psychoanalysis provide useful terminology for the disruptive force beyond identity-concepts?
