This paper addresses the guardianship of orphans in Plato’s Laws. The aim is to state whether the philosopher, through his theoretic model, wanted to correct the critical issues of the Athenian legal system that he perceived as most problematic. The paper is divided in two parts. The first one deals with the analysis of passages from Plato’s works in which the issue of the orphans’ guardianship had been addressed, in order to identify which related matters, in his opinion, deserved a corrective intervention. The second part of the paper is itself divided in two parts and deals with the analysis of the legislation on the orphans’ guardianship of Magnesia. The comparison with the Athenian and other institutions from the Greek world allows us to focus on the innovative features of this new legislation: they come out both from a personal revision by the philosopher and from the inspiration to non-Athenian models. In this way, Plato seems to try to fill the gaps of Athenian practice, even in theory.

One inscribed tombstone was placed at Appa station on the Ottoman Railway line from İzmir to Dinar. The inscription was published by three different copyists in the course of eleven years. Each person who transcribed the inscription, Georg Weber, William Mitchell Ramsay and Georges Cousin, made no acknowledgement of each other. Moreover, each transcription and reconstruction differed from the other in more lines than the number of lines in which they were in agreement; the provenance for the stone was credited to different locations and the minimal description of the form of the stone left considerable doubt as to the tombstone’s design. No sketch or photograph was provided. The names on the epitaph have been harnessed by the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names to a site (Sanaos) to which none of the three published editions actually tied the inscription. The dispute may have been left unresolved, but for a photograph taken by Gertrude Bell in 1907. She never published it, but, for her, it was the fitting compensation for a failed visit to the site of Colossae. By careful enhancement of the photograph and close study of its contents, the three disputed elements — the form of the tombstone, its original location and the wording of the inscription — can be resolved to a high degree of probability. The restored inscription becomes particularly valuable for a name that may connect with one of the (in)famous features of Colossian religious life — the worship of angels., İzmir’den Dinar’a giden Osmanlı tren yolu hattı üzerindeki Appa istasyonuna yazıtlı bir mezar taşı konulmuştu. Bu yazıt 11 yıllık bir süre zarfında üç farklı kişi tarafından kopyalanarak yayımlanmıştır. Üstelik, her transkripsiyon ve rekonstrüksiyon uyum içinde oldukları satır sayısından daha fazla sayıda birbirinden farklıydı. Taşın menşei değişik yerlere atfedilmişti ve taşın şeklinin çok kısa tasvir edilmesi mezar taşının nasıl tasarlandığı konusunda büyük bir şüphe bırakmıştı. The paper examines the development of roads in northwestern (and parts of Central) Asia Minor from the Roman to the Byzantine period, pointing also to some changes in the Turkish period until about the 17th century. There was a remarkable continuity regarding the main routes of long distance traffic, but these routes could change in detail, corresponding to different military and economic focuses and needs. Design and building techniques of the roads changed, depending on the economic resources the state was able to spend and above all on the change from wagons and carts to pack animals. Neglect of the wide, paved long-distance roads of the Roman imperial period at the end of antiquity was linked to the gradual decrease of vehicular traffic in Asia Minor. By the sixth century AD, travel and transport relied on mounts and pack animals, except for some short-distance trans-portation on simple oxcarts. Roads were adapted to these means of transport and became narrower and stepped at steep passages. From the seventh century onwards, following the loss of the eastern provinces and during the nearly annual Arab invasions of Anatolia, the Byzantines chose routes that were partly different from the main routes of the Roman period and Late Antiquity, but which mostly were also inherited from their Roman predecessors. The main routes through Asia Minor were generally maintained in an acceptable order, but very few really new roads were built. After the Seljuk conquests roads became insecure again. The main lines of communication did not change, at least not in regions under Byzantine control. The Ottomans took over most of the roads used by the Byzantines for their military campaigns and for trade. It seems, however, that they were readier to build at least a limited number of entirely new roads. Their building techniques more or less followed the examples of their Byzantine predecessors.

The recent synthesis of Roman-period amulets by C. A. Faraone has highlighted the signifi-cance of such artefacts in strategies of personal and group protection and healing throughout Greek and Roman antiquity. A specific group of such amulets, on semi-precious stones en-graved with images, intercultural words of power, and special signs, was created in late-Hellenistic Egypt, but spread into the eastern Mediterranean mainly in the Roman period. This paper publishes two such magical amulets, one in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the other in the Erimtan Museum of Archaeology and Art, both in Ankara. The first car-ries a fine example of the cock-headed Anguipede figure on the obverse, and, on the reverse, three of the Judaic names of God most commonly found on amulets in this tradition. The sec-ond gem offers no iconography but an interesting Greek inscription, followed by three special signs, appealing to the goddess Gaia (Earth) to protect the wearer. The paper has two main aims: to contribute to the aim of completing the digital Campbell Bonner Magical Gems data-base, organised by Á.M. Nagy in Budapest, which has taken the study of these gems to a new level, and to make these amuletic gems better known in Turkey., C. A. Faraone’nin muskalar üzerine son dönemlerde yaptığı çalışmalar bu tür eserlerin Yunan ve Roma Dönemlerinde hem kişileri hem de grupları çeşitli kötülüklere karşı korumadaki stratejik önemini işaret etmektedir. Yarı değerli taşlar üzerine kazılan ve kültürler arası güç gösterisini de vurgulama amacı taşıyan bu sihirli imgeler öncelikli olarak Geç Hellenistik dönem Mısırı’nda ortaya çıksa da asıl güçlü yayılımını Doğu Akdeniz dünyasında Roma Dönemi’nde kazanmıştır. Bu çalışmada biri Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi’nde diğeri ise Erimtan Arkeoloji ve Sanat Müzesi’nde yer alan iki sihirli amulet ele alınmaktadır. Birinci örneğin ön yüzünde literatürde horoz kafalı Anguipede olarak adlandırılan figürün iyi bir örneği bulunur. Aynı nesnenin arka yüzünde ise bu eserlerde sıklıkla karşılaşılan Yahudi tanrılarının üç ismi bulunur: “Iao, Sabao, Adonai”. İkinci amulet herhangi bir ikonografi sunmamakla birlikte içerik olarak ilginç bir Grekçe yazıta sahiptir: “Yeryüzü ve güneş (?), Chryseis’in dünyaya getirdiği Dion’u tüm tehlikeden korusunlar”. Söz konusu yazıt üç sihirli karakter ile sonlanmaktadır. Yazıt, tanrıça Gaia’nın bu nesneyi taşıyan kişiyi kötülüklerden korumasına vurgu yapmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın iki önemli sonucu bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan biri Arpad M. Nagy tarafından organize edilen Campbell Bonner Database’nin dijital veri tabanına önemli bir katkı sunmaktır. Çalışmanın diğer önemli sonucu ise söz konusu amuletlerin Türkiye’de daha fazla tanınmasına katkı sağlamaktır.

The paper provides food for thought on the issue of corruption in Ammianus Marcellinus’ History pointing out the need for revising the criteria of valuation of this phenomenology in order to assess it in modern conceptual terms. As a consequence Ammianus’ Res Gestae have to be analysed moving from the political, economic and social contexts as they stem not only from historiographical sources, but also from the Codes, enabling scholars to test the level of bias of the historian who was stubbornly anchored to the values of tradition that, in his opinion, coincided with the ordo’s privileges.

In ancient Greece the war upset the normal life of the poleis, but it also offered merchants a great opportunity to earn money through the provisioning of the fighting armies. Indeed, warring poleis had to offer favourable terms for trade with their armies by limiting as much as possible restrictions and impositions about the sale prices in order to entice the merchants to follow their troops to provide them with what is necessary for the sustenance of soldiers. The food provisioning during war is therefore a further example of how emporoi escaped the control of the polis, forcing it to allow the provisioning of their armies to be secured under free market rules.

References to Greek mythology and history are quite frequent in George of Pisidia’s epic panegyric poems. However, such references are adapted to a Christian perspective, a fact which is evident in the representation of the Persians and especially in the use of the exemplum of Xerxes.

This article tries to determine the place and identity of the owner of a metal stamp located in the Bursa Archaeological Museum collection in the Byzantine stamping objects typology. The stamp that we consider in this article is one of the rare examples, in which the inscription specifies the name of the owner as well as the offices and titles he held. The owner of the stamp, dated to approximately 9th –10th centuries, is Iohannes, the imperial protospatharios and epi ton oikeiakon. It is understood from the title protospatharios that Iohannes was a member of the central government and a wealthy aristocrat. The title epi ton oikeiakon, appearing together with Iohannes, may be a title that shows that he is a more privileged individual than other officials and that he may be from the imperial court. On the other hand, we also know of an administrative task under the sekreton of oikeiakon since the last quarter of the 10th century. In light of this, we have the following question: did Iohannes use his stamp for his personal affairs or did he use it in accordance with his responsibilities, which were part of his administrative position of management of imperial properties? In either case, we think that his stamp was stamped on a soft object such as clay and that it may be a brick stamp.

The rendition of living (or just deceased) persons with clearly recognizable individual features on coins was developed at the intersection of Greek and Persian cultural areas as a result of the grown complexity of political power-structures. Where at first the emblem of a dominant community or a figure with the general attributes of royal authority had been sufficient to guarantee for the value of the money thus hallmarked, the increased circulation of coinages by rivalling issuers within one area called for a far more sophisticated differentiation of the various issues and the claims to rulership, which the respective images were meant to transmit. This was also true in cases, where the iconography was devised to express a certain hierarchy with different levels of power as in the various series struck by subordinates of the Achaemenid kings. Initially those coins were just intended to represent the authority of the overlord, but occasionally they were also used in competition to the ruling system, which made rather complex visual messages with a stronger emphasis on the personal identity of the respective issuer necessary. It is not by chance that at the different coinages of Lycia, where numerous dynastic clans competed with each other in a comparatively small and secluded space beyond the immediate range of superior influence, the first attempts to a distinction of the various issuers by a gradual adoption of their individual likenesses on the coins in their names have been made. The dissolution of the traditional order and the new political arrangement of the various territories in Anatolia and the Middle East brought about by the campaign of Alexander led to a multiplication of regional power-centres, – all with their own coin issues, that represented competing claims to rulership. Beginning with the coinages of the Ptolemies and of the Seleucids more and more individual portraits of the respective rulers were applied on the coins in order to make the issuing entities easier to distinguish from each other even by illiterate users. Only in some rather remote and secluded areas at the periphery of the different power-blocks, where there was no constant influx of other currencies, a merely symbolic representation of the rulers was still functional for some time.

Caesar ile Lykia Birliği arasındaki müttefiklik antlaşmasında (Mitchell 2005) Lykia’nın kuzey sınırlarında “Masa” adında bir dağ anılmaktadır. İ.Ö. 160-150 arasına tarihlenen bu Letoon yazıtında söz konusu dağ Oinoanda’daki Termessoslular ve Lykialılar arasındaki bir sınır çatışmasına konu olmaktadır. Bu sınır tartışması Kos kentinde görülen bir dava neticesinde çözüme ulaşmış ve taraflar Masa Dağı’nın Tloslulara ait olması, Oinoanda’daki Termessosluların da dağın sadece kereste ve otlaklarını kullanmaları ve de herhangi bir şekilde ekim dikim ya da inşa yapmamaları hususlarında anlaşmışlardır. Bunlar neticesinde Lykia Birliği Oinoanda’daki Termessoslulara 25 talanton yeni Rhodos gümüş plintoforu ödemiştir. Bu anlaşma çerçevesinde Masa Dağı’nın detaylı bir şekilde sınırlandırılması yapılmış ve sınırlandırma komisyonunun tüm sınırlama faaliyeti yazıtta verilmiştir. Anakaya üzerine işlenen 18 adet sınır işaretinin yanı sıra, yollar, vadiler, akarsular, bir dağ geçidi, yaylalar, taşlık alanlar gibi pek çok coğrafi tanımlamalar da kullanılarak dağ etrafının kapsamlı bir resmi sunulmuştur. Bununla birlikte, bu kadar detaya rağmen dağın yeri tespit edilememişti. 2019 yılındaki arazi çalışmalarımız neticesinde yazıtta bahsi geçen vadiler tespit edilerek, yazıtta anılan akarsulardan Golbanounda’nın Bayırköy’ün güneydoğusundaki Hacıosman Deresi, Endyrenos’un da Gökbel Yaylası doğusundaki Sarısu olduğu görülmüş ve Masa Dağı’nın günümüz Hacıosman Dağı olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Yazı bu keşif çalışmasının detaylarını içermektedir. ______________________________________________________________________ A mount called Masa is mentioned in an inscription from the Letoon (Rousset 2010) and in the foedus (treaty) between Caesar and Lycia (Mitchell 2005), as northern border of Hellenistic Lycia. The inscription from the Letoon, which dates from sometime 160-150 B.C., reads that this mount has been the subject matter of a border conflict between Termessans at Oinoanda and Lycians. This conflict was resolved in a case tried in Kos and parties accepted that Mount Masa should belong to Tloans, but Termessans at Oinoanda could use its wood and grass being prohibited to sow, to harvest or to build on its lands. In the sequel, Lycians had to pay 25 talents of new Rhodian silver plinthophors to Termessans at Oinoanda. Within the frame of this agreement, Mount Masa was demarcated all around and all the details of demarcation fulfilled by a commission were given in the inscription. In addition to 18 boundary marks carved on bedrock, through several geographic descriptions such as roads, ravines, streams, defiles, plateaux and stony places, a comprehensive picture around the mount was presented. However, the location of the mount was not found, in spite of all the details given in the text. As a result of our 2019 campaign, the ravines are determined on the field and it is understood that Golbanounda, one of two streams mentioned in the inscription, was today’s Hacıosman Deresi, and the second, Endyrenos, was today’s Sarı Dere. Therefore, it has now been understood that Mount Masa was Hacıosman Dağı of today. This contribution contains the details of this discovery.

This paper presents two new milestones, found at Çayırhan/Nallıhan, Ankara. No.1 is identi-cal with and from same find spot as three other milestone’s inscriptions published in RRMAM but records 7 mp from Juliopolis. It was situated between the first two milestones, published in RRMAM. No.2, also found in same place, is largely illegible and fragmentary, for this reason an adequate reading could not be provided., Bu yazıda Çayırhan’da bulunan iki yeni miltaşı tanıtılmaktadır. No.1 RRMAM’da yayınlanan diğer 3 miltaşı ile tıpatıp benzerdir ve aynı bölgede bulunmuştur. Miltaşı Julipolis’ten 7 mp mesafe uzaklık vermektedir. The article deals with the grave inscription of the two brothers Eubulion and Demetrios, sons of Theopompos, written on a small stele from Imperial times. As is obvious at first glance, the inscription has been heavily tampered with: While the lines 6–14 show a consistent type face, the lines 1–5 diverge significantly and have partially been written on an erased surface. Furthermore, the lines 15–16 are clearly secondary and appear as a non-professional addendum altogether. A revision of the inscription’s squeeze made possible a reconstruction of most of the erased parts in lines 4–5, revealing that the grave monument was, in fact, not meant for two, but for four brothers, two of which have been scratched off. After an epigraphic analysis and the reconstruction of the erased parts in ll.4–6 (section I), the article deals with the following topics: Section II addresses the secondary text in ll.1–6 and delivers a detailed analysis of the verb διαφέρειν „belong to“ (g. „gehören“, fr. „appartenir à“) in Imperial grave texts from Asia Minor, showing that the term typically appears in cases where an already established grave monument comes into the hands of new owners. Section III deals with the beginning of the original text and discusses the implications of the erasure of two brothers (and their respective wives, children and grandchildren) from a family grave monument.

The article aims to explore the connections between the fifteenth book of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the Bellum civile sung by Eumolpus in Petronius’ Satyricon. Not only structural and thematic analogies, but also the recurrence of key-figures such as Hercules and Caesar support the thesis of a very close link between the two texts. Eventually, it will be shown that Ovid’s Metamorphoses represent for Petronius both an important model and «anti-model» in the construction of an epic poem which only apparently takes side against Lucan’s Pharsalia.

During his reign Augustus gradually included his daughters and nieces in the education strategies reserved for the members of the domus Augusta. Ancient tradition shows that even the female heirs of the princeps, grown in a cosmopolitan context, can benefit of the new educational system perhaps attending Verrius Flaccus’ lessons for a longer period than the other girls of the nobilitas senatoria.

Lysias argues in XII 36 that if the Athenians condemned the Arginousai generals it would be right to condemn the Thirty. This argument implies that the generals were guilty and asserts that there was a strong conviction on the part of the Athenians that they should punish the generals. This is a clever rhetorical argument, which conformed to the Athenian ideology according to which the demos was blameless. However, Lysias avoids mentioning that the Athenians violated their law and tried the generals without a proper trial. This happens because the orator comments on the trial retrospectively. If he had to admit that the procedure was illegal, this would clearly have weakened his case; so he does not make this mistake.

Antik dünyanın çöküşü ve Ortaçağ’a geçiş ile birlikte, bu materyaller kamusal ya da şahsi metinleri taşımaları bakımından önemlerini kaybetmişler ve onlara bakanlar için anlaşılmaz hale gelmişlerdir. Bu süre içerisinde, epigrafi farklı bir yönelim izlemiş ve Hıristiyanlık ile Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu’na ait kurumla­rın hizmetinde yeni değerler kazanmıştır. Tahkimatlar, kamu altyapısı ve kiliseler bu uzun dönem boyunca bölgedeki inşa faaliyetinde öne çıkmışlardır. Erken dönem materyalleri ile dolu olan antik kent ve alanlarının ilk olarak meydana gelmesinin ardından mimari üretim geniş ölçüde pek çok çeşitte ve pek çok döneme ait devşirme malzeme kullanmıştır. Bu devşirmeler çeşitli yapılar içerisine – hiç bozulmamış ya da yeniden işlenmiş şekilde – konmuş pek çok yazıtı içermektedir. Ankara’nın duvarları, Ephesos kentinin kiliseleri ve diğer anıtlar, sonradan Selçuklu ve Osmanlı Türkleri tarafından da kullanılan bu uy­gulamayı temsil etmektedirler. Anadolu’nun Bizans Dönemi anıtlarındaki yazılı devşirme malzemelerin varlığı, bir şekilde deği­şik formda hala aynı dili konuşan fakat farklı bir kültürü paylaşan bir toplumda yazılı kelimelere karşı gösterilen tutuma dair pek çok sorun ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu makale, Anadolu’dan seçilen yeniden kullanılmış epigrafik malzemeler ışığında yazıtların çoğunlukla pratik amaçlarla kullanıl­dığını iddia etmektedir. Okuma yazma bilen ya da bilmeyen Bizanslılar tarafından neredeyse an­laşılmaz olan yazılı taşlar, savunma yapılarında, sivil binalarda ve kiliselerde yeniden kullanılmak üzere ham inşa malzemesine dönüşmüşlerdir.

This paperpresents a new inscribed Assos-type sarcophagus found recently in a villageclose to the ancient city of Alexandreia Troas. A characteristic feature of thegeneral decoration of Assos-type sarcophagi is the attention-grabbing shape ofthe large central panel positioned on each of the long sides of thesarcophagus. It is proposed that these large central panels may have been schematicrepresentations of rectangular or round funerary altars. Accordingly, the depiction of the funerary altar onthe sarcophagus is considered to be a new hybrid style of the practice in thenecropolis of Assos of erecting a funerary altar along with the sarcophagus. With this sarcophagus inscription dating tothe third century AD, the presence of the professional association ofshipwrights, which is known to have existed in a number of important harbourcities in the western part of the Roman Empire, is attested for the first time inthe ancient city of Alexandreia Troas and Asia Minor in general. The epithet ἱερώτατοςlabelling the collegium suggests that the association may have gained a privilegedposition in the ancient city. The anonymous owner of the sarcophagus must havebeen associated with the collegium of shipwrights at Alexandreia Troasand, presumably, he was a shipwright., Makalede yakın zamanda AleksandreiaTroas yakınlarındaki Kemallı Köyü’nde bulunmuş yazıtlı bir Assos lahditanıtılmaktadır. Yazarlar, Assos lahitlerinin her iki uzun yüzünde bulunan veşekilleri itibariyle dikkat uyandıran geniş orta panelin aslında dikdörtgenveya silindirik gömü sunaklarının lahitler üzerine işlenmiş şematik bir tasviriolabileceğini ileri sürmektedir. Buna bağlı olarak, mezar sunaklarının lahitüzerine betimlenmesinin Assos nekropolisinde lahitle birlikte bir gömü sunağıdikme geleneğinin yeni bir melez biçemi olabileceği varsayılmaktadır. Roma İmparatorluğu’nunbatısında birkaç önemli liman şehrinde faaliyet gösterdiği bilinen tersaneişçileri derneğinin Aleksandria Troas ve Asia Minor’daki varlığı, MS 3. yüzyılatarihlenen bu yazıtla ilk defa epigrafik olarak belgelenmektedir. Derneği tanımlamakiçin kullanılan ἱερώτατος epitheti bu derneğin kentte belli bir prestije sahip olduklarınıdüşündürmektedir. Lahdi hazırlatan kişinin bu dernekle bir bağlantısının olmasımuhtemeldir. Classical,Roman and Late antiquity inherited in the land of Asia Minor thousands of olderGreek and Latin inscriptions on stone, of various content and purposes. With thecollapse of the ancient world and the transition to the medieval period, thismaterial lost its significance as conveyor of public and private texts andbecame incomprehensible to the viewers. In the meantime, contem­porary epigraphyfollowed a different orientation and acquired new values, in the service ofChris­tianity and the Eastern Roman imperial institutions. Fortifications,public infrastructure and churches predominate in the building activity in there­gion during this long period. Taking place primarily at ancient cities andsites full of earlier ma­terial, architectural production extensively reusedspolia of various kinds and periods. These spo­lia included many inscriptions,which were embedded –intact or reworked– in variousstructures. The walls of Ankara, the churches of Ephesus and other monumentsare representative of this practice, which was later exercised by the Seljuksand the Ottoman Turks too. The presence of inscribedspolia in Byzantine monuments of Asia Minor raises several questions about theattitude towards the written word in a society which was still using the samelanguage, in a somehow changed form, but was sharing a different culture. Basedon selected cases of reused epigraphic material from the Asia Minor, thisarticle argues that inscriptions were treated mainly in practical terms. Beingmore or less incomprehensible by illiterate and literate Byzantines, in­scribedstones became raw building materials available to be recycled infortifications, secular buildings and churches., Klasik, Roma ve Geç AntikDönem Anadolu topraklarına çeşitli içerik ve amaçlar barındıran, taş­larüzerine yazılı binlerce Yunanca ve Latince yazıt miras bırakmıştır. Antikdünyanın çöküşü ve Ortaçağ’a geçiş ile birlikte, bu materyaller kamusal ya daşahsi metinleri taşımaları bakımından önemlerini kaybetmişler ve onlarabakanlar için anlaşılmaz hale gelmişlerdir. Bu süre içerisinde, epigrafi farklıbir yönelim izlemiş ve Hıristiyanlık ile Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu’na ait kurumla­rınhizmetinde yeni değerler kazanmıştır. Tahkimatlar, kamualtyapısı ve kiliseler bu uzun dönem boyunca bölgedeki inşa faaliyetinde öneçıkmışlardır. Erken dönem materyalleri ile dolu olan antik kent ve alanlarınınilk olarak meydana gelmesinin ardından mimari üretim geniş ölçüde pek çokçeşitte ve pek çok döneme ait devşirme malzeme kullanmıştır. Bu devşirmelerçeşitli yapılar içerisine – hiç bozulmamış ya da yeniden işlenmiş şekilde –konmuş pek çok yazıtı içermektedir. Ankara’nın duvarları, Ephesos kentininkiliseleri ve diğer anıtlar, sonradan Selçuklu ve Osmanlı Türkleri tarafındanda kullanılan bu uy­gulamayı temsil etmektedirler. Anadolu’nun Bizans Dönemi anıtlarındaki yazılıdevşirme malzemelerin varlığı, bir şekilde deği­şik formda hala aynı dilikonuşan fakat farklı bir kültürü paylaşan bir toplumda yazılı kelimelere karşıgösterilen tutuma dair pek çok sorun ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu makale,Anadolu’dan seçilen yeniden kullanılmış epigrafik malzemeler ışığındayazıtların çoğunlukla pratik amaçlarla kullanıl­dığını iddia etmektedir. The widely accepted link of Homer’s town with the land of Taruwisa and/or the land of Wilusa in Hittite sources is based on little other than name associations: firstly that of Alaksandu, king of Wilusa, with Alexandros or Paris, the Trojan prince (1911), then of Wilusa with Ilios, another name for Troy, and, independently, of Taruwisa with Troy itself (both 1924). Also ]appaliunas, in a list of Wilusian gods, was identified with Apollo (1931). None of these equations is cogent, and if a Wilusian king and a Wilusian god really had Greek names, it would not strengthen the localization of Wilusa in the Troad. Homer’s town was indeed localized there, but the efforts to prove the existence of a town around the stronghold on the hill of Hisarlık have failed. This stronghold was neither Troy nor the capital of Wilusa, and there is no connection with Hittite history or culture. Monuments and inscriptions in Hittite style exist in West Anatolia, but farther to the south, and until now none of the western kingdoms attested primarily in Hittite sources has been confirmed by excavation. The equation of Ephesos with Abāsa, the town of Uhhazidi, the last king of Arzawa, is phonetically even worse, and Ephesos is probably a genuine Greek name.

Eskişehir Müzesi’ndeki Eski Yunanca ve Latince yayımlanmamış yazıtlar üzerinde yıllardır çalış­malar yürütmekteyiz. Bu makalede müzede kaydettiğimiz 43 yeni yazıtı tanıtmaktayız. Yazıtların 38 tanesi mezar yazıtıdır. Bir tanesi olasılıkla bir adak yazıtıdır (no. 15). Bir adet yüzük üzerinde bir yazıt vardır (no. 40). Son üç eser ise yazılı mühürlerden oluşmaktadır (no. 41-43). Mühürler zamanında ekmek mühürü olarak kullanılmıştır. Mezar yazıtlarından iki tanesi epigramdır (no. 33-34). Mezar yazıtlarının steller, altarlar veya sütunlar üzerine yazılmış olduğu görülmektedir. Eserler Eskişehir teritoryumunda bulunmuştur ancak birçoğunun tam buluntu yeri bilinme­mektedir. The least significant of all ancient settlements called Athenai was located east of Trapezous on the Pontic coast. It maintained its name well into the 20th century, when its successor was renamed Pazar. That Arrian provides us with the first (surviving) description of this chorion is due to a storm that compelled him to anchor parts of the Roman fleet in its little harbour (AD 132). In the 6th century, Prokopios mentions the village only to refute the local tradition that it had been founded by its more famous namesake. Scholars have shared this skepticism and thus largely relegated Pontic Athens to footnotes or condemned it to complete oblivion. But nothing is more plausible than regarding it as a result of Perikles’ expedition to the Euxine (ca. 437/35 BC). Athenai may have a pre-history as a Milesian apoikia called Limne. Less certain is the role it played after the breakdown of Athenian thalassocracy (405 BC). It probably stood under Sinopean hegemony, before being absorbed into the Pontic kingdom in the early-2nd century BC. By then, however, Pontic Athens had shared the economic downturn of the area between Trapezous and Phasis. It lived on as a village regardless, and thus demonstrates that a polichnion could escape the historical record for centuries without ceasing to exist.

Makalede yakın zamanda Aleksandreia Troas yakınlarındaki Kemallı Köyü’nde bulunmuş yazıtlı bir Assos lahdi tanıtılmaktadır. Yazarlar, Assos lahitlerinin her iki uzun yüzünde bulunan ve şekilleri itibariyle dikkat uyandıran geniş orta panelin aslında dikdörtgen veya silindirik gömü sunaklarının lahitler üzerine işlenmiş şematik bir tasviri olabileceğini ileri sürmektedir. Buna bağlı olarak, mezar sunaklarının lahit üzerine betimlenmesinin Assos nekropolisinde lahitle birlikte bir gömü sunağı dikme geleneğinin yeni bir melez biçemi olabileceği varsayılmaktadır. Roma İmparatorluğu’nun batısında birkaç önemli liman şehrinde faaliyet gösterdiği bilinen tersane işçileri derneğinin Aleksandria Troas ve Asia Minor’daki varlığı, MS 3. yüzyıla tarihlenen bu yazıtla ilk defa epigrafik olarak belgelenmektedir. Derneği tanımlamak için kullanılan ἱερώτατος epitheti bu derneğin kentte belli bir prestije sahip olduklarını düşündürmektedir. Isocr. 18 could have hired Isocrates, and the speaker of Lys. 21 and Eryximachus could have hired Lysias as speechwriters for their rhetorical skills. However, it is probable that Isocrates’ choice to criticize the former colleagues of Isocr. 18 in his speech could have led the other two trierarchs to ask for Lysias’ help. This fact highlights the tensions between the elite when Athens was defeated in the Peloponnesian War. This antagonism between the trierarchs could be the beginning of the logographic competition between Lysias and Isocrates.

The article analyses the origin of two rubrics of Justinian’s Digest: De in diem addictionem (D. 18, 2) and De lege commissoria (D. 18, 3). A hypothesis on the creation of these rubrics and relative titles is envisaged: the Digest compilers would have decided (probably in the final phase of the sampling, in an attempt to bring the structure of the Digest into line with the material available to them) to disaggregate a ‘complex’ title D. 18, 1, already formed, extracting passages from it to form two new titles, which are the subject of the research.

In this essay, I argue that the terms anarchia and anarchos had become associated with critiques of democracy before the final quarter of the fifth century BCE. I begin with a review of archaic and early classical uses of the term, with a particular focus on two instances in Aeschylus’ Oresteia. I then examine Euripides’ two uses of anarchia/anarchos, one in Hecuba and the other in Iphigenia at Aulis. In each case, we see that the concept of anarchic behavior is associated with democratic bodies; that charges of anarchia are laid by characters who engage with critiques of democracy throughout the dramas; and that the term itself is embedded within discourses that are laden with the language and rhetoric of anti-democratic discourses found in Thucydides, Herodotus, and the Old Oligarch. Given that Euripidean references to anarchia are embedded within terminology that was already current in contemporary anti-democratic thought, I conclude that the concept of democracy’s ‘anarchic’ tendencies had already been developed by the final quarter of the fifth century BCE.

Exercises based upon the Aesopian μῦθος (προγυμνάσματα) were common in imperial schools of rhetoric. Being educated in such schools, Gregory of Nazianzus dealt with the fable: clear evidence lies in his oeuvre, where fable items are indeed widespread. By analyzing these items, the article aims to study why Gregory used and adapted them to Christianism (i.e. why he Christianized them).

A look at the innovations, especially in the economy, but also in other areas of Roman society, reveals two sides of Roman civilization: In addition to a strong sense of political and family traditions and a respect of traditional values there was a great willingness to innovate if they were to increase the efficiency of the political and social system, thereby increasing the dignity of the res publica or, in the private sphere, the social rank of a family. Even the policies of the middle and late Roman republic proved in many ways to be innovative; In particular, we should point out the popular policy that since the laws of the Gracchi has repeatedly formulated new proposals to adapt the republic to new political, social and economic needs. Finally, under Augustus, this policy culminated in the creation of a constitutionally new system, the Principate, which combined the old institutions of the Republic with new power structures. Technical innovations were perceived and positively valued by ancient authors such as Vitruvius, Heron or Pliny; however, the Romans were unable to quantify their economic effect, the increase in productivity. However, it should not be overlooked that the technical innovations for the economy, transport, architecture and infrastructure had profound consequences; they are by no means to be considered as marginal, because they increased productivity in agriculture and crafts, thereby contributing on the one hand to increasing profits of large landowners and on the other hand to improving the supply of agricultural products and craft products to the population. Especially in the field of infrastructure, for example in the water supply, they had positive effects on the welfare of the population. The technical innovations were therefore undoubtedly in addition to the long period of peace beginning under Augustus, which guaranteed to the inhabitants of the Mediterranean an unprecedented external and internal security, an indispensable condition of that urbanity, which in the Principate's time was characterized by widespread prosperity and high aesthetic standards the material culture was characterized.

Kent kapıları Romalı burjuva erdemlerine atıflar yapmaktadır. Yerel tarihçiler Hıristiyan piskoposların dönemi başlamadan çok önce yerleşimde bir Romalı kökeni bulmuşlardı. Antik kültür bugün hâlâ kent geleneğini karakterize etmektedir.

This article offers a critical account of a Carian word traditionally assumed to refer to the tomb or to one of its parts. Based on recent philological improvements, on a detailed analysis of the relevant inscriptions as well as on the combinatory method it will be argued in this paper that in fact we are dealing with three different words. One of them indeed refers to the tomb, but the other two are a verb and an appurtenance adjective based on a Lycian toponym.

This paper covers a period of 400 years, from 1400 to 1800, and the antiquarian activities of more than 60 named Europeans, there are doubtless others, who were involved in transcribing, and at times, through their agents and Ottoman associates, guides, villagers and Greek priests, those who related the position and at times enabled the physical removal of ancient inscriptions from Asia Minor; as well as the associated antiquarian collecting of “marbles,” ancient manuscripts, medals-coins, inscribed gem-stones and other inscription bearing materials. Some of this material was lost at sea, while some ancient inscriptions brought from Asia Minor were da­maged, lost or destroyed in warfare in Europe. Following Ciriaco de Pizzicolli’s transcriptions in the 15th c. and the few inscriptions transcribed by Pierre Belon in 1546-9, it seems to have been the Bishop of Agria (Eger), Antonius Verantius’s transcription of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti and the copy made by Busbecq’s servants in Ankara in 1555 which, when circulated and then published, underlined to European scholars the importance of the surviving ancient epigraphic record in Asia Minor. From the start of the 17th c. an increasing number of educated European antiquarians undertook the recording of the surviving visible inscriptions, largely in coastal re­gions and along the major trade routes of Asia Minor. Note is taken of the variety of recorded Ottoman views concerning these ancient inscriptions, of their transcription and, at times, their removal by European berat holders; together with some examples of the inaccuracies of the transcriptions of inscriptions that were made.

After the discovery of the long Phoenician and Hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions of Karatepe (Ci­licia), which mention a certain Muksas or MPŠ as the founder of a dynasty, this name was immediately linked with a fabled Greek seer named Mopsos, because some authors tell that he traveled, after the fall of Troy, to Pamphylia and also to Cilicia and even ruled there. These names were linked with other male names too: Mycenaean Mokwsos (?), Muksus in a Hittite text, the Lydian name (in Greek adaption) Moxos and, finally, Phrygian Muksos. The famous archaeologist James Mellaart even invented a long Bronze Age Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription, published recently, where a Great King’s son named Muksus came to the city of Ashkelon, as did the Lydian called Mopsos in the ‘Deipnosophists’ of Athenaeus.Without placing such confidence in storytelling, late and very late and not altogether trustworthy, it is easier to suppose that the Cilician MPŠ was identified with the Greek Mopsos only much later and to leave open why the founder of the dynasty had two similar but different names. And not­hing speaks for a Bronze Age date for this founder – on the contrary, in the Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription from Çineköy near Adana the donating king is his grandchild, and this must probably be taken literally, not merely as ‘descendant’. The Mycenaean Mokwsos may indeed have been adapted in West Anatolia as Muksus, and this handed down in Lydia and then first taken over by Phrygians and later by Luwians from Phrygians: travels of a name and not travels of the fabled seer. It is however not cogent that the names attested in Anatolia are derived from Mycenaean; they could be easily independent. The supposed derivation of MPŠ from Mopsos has led to the strong belief, not only in a Greek origin for the Cilician dynasty, but also in an early Greek presence in Cilicia. However, there are no more reliable props for it: neither a Greek origin for the royal names Á-wa/i+ra/i-ku-sa (Eu­archos?) and Wa/i+ra/i-i-ka-sá (Wroikos?), nor one for KRNTRYŠ, an epiclesis of Baal in Karatepe (an otherwise unattested adjective κορυνητήριος?), nor linking Hiyawa with the Achaeans of Homer. Against the mere possibility of such explanations stands the total lack of Greek inscriptions in Cilicia before Hellenistic times, and this is decisive

In the furnishing, not only of the Mausoleum of Belevi near Ephesos but also in the palace of Nero (Domus Aurea) in Rome the myth of Phaëton is shown. It will be explained by the builders to be the reborn Mithras in order to create a new golden age. Analogous to the Telephos-Frieze from the Pergamon-Altar it is supposed that in both places it was planned to show the myth of Phaëton and his sisters, the Heliades, narrative in more than one sequence. But not the western version, which accused Phaëton of presumption and justified his punishment and destruction by Zeus, should be shown but the eastern interpretation, which demanded in Mithraic understanding the sacrifice of the son by his father in the expyrosis, in the decline of the world by fire. Mithras as Kosmokrator, „the Assyrian Phaëton in Persia“ (Nonnos) guarantees a new golden era (aurea aetas). It is not astonishing that in fine arts from antiquity to the re­naissance (Michelangelo) to modern times (Goethe) artists follow the literary western examples (Ovid, Philostrat). Only the amphiglyphic relief from Dieburg in Germany testifies that the Mithraic interpretation existed (Nonnos, Dio Chrysostomos). This is not contrary to the assumption that the tombs in Halikarnassos as well as in Belevi are not built for one ruler but for dynasties. Therefore, the mausolea for the Hecatomnids and the Antigonids were in need of dif­ferent places for funerals and cult of the ruling dynasts in the upper floor with sarcophags and statues and the normal family-members of the dynasty in the podium.

In response to several recent studies published byKoray Konuk, Diether Schürr and Frank Kolb the author assembles the extantnumismatic evidence of the early 4th century BC from Central andWestern Lycia in order to reconstruct the history of the Xanthos-Valley betweenthe end of the rule of Erbbina and the rise of Perikle and to establish thesequence of the principal political agents during that period. He is defendingthe traditional hypothesis that there were not less (but also not more) thantwo rulers with the name Weχssere. The first one had been a contemporary ofΧeriga, who probably had taken the city of Xanthos from him. The second one,who might actually have been a son or a relative of his elder namesake, invadedthe Xanthos-Valley from Central-Lycia bringing the reign of the tyrant Erbbinato an end at the beginning of the 4th century BC. While the likewise attestedagents Aruwãtijesi and Ddẽñtimi were probably co-rulers or lieutenants, theauthor holds that Waχssebllimi, Waχssepddimi and Uχssepddimi are possibly to beseen as nothing else than composite name-forms used by the elder and theyounger Weχssere respectively. In the northwest corner of the theatre-excavations under the leadership of Dr. Aygün Ekin Meriç in Nikaia a honorific round basis (originally with statue) for the Asclepius priest Publius Claudius Calpurnianus was detected. The person honoured was son of the priest of the ruler Hadrian and member of an influential family of the city. The role of Hadrian as a benefactor in re­building the city after the earthquake of 120 AD is well known. His priest may be crucial that his son was invested a priest of the Asclepius cult. A family member may also have erected the basis. A priest of Asclepios is not attested yet, in the city. The cult is important for the city and the re­gion, though Asclepios, therefore, „a Saviour” god, probably played a significant role during a catastrophe like an earthquake. The close connection of father and son as well as of Hadrian and Asclepius priest focuses our minds on the earthquake of 120 AD.

In this short notice a recently published coin which bears the legend Ἀλυά(ττης) is presented. If the coin is authentic its legend will influence the interpretation of Lydian coin legends.
