For the DSH writing task, candidates often rely on chunks or formulaic language to write their texts. These elements lead to uncertainties during the rating process, as they are memorized by the test takers without undergoing linguistic analysis. Their usage does not offer clear indications of whether the structures employed have been learned. The exam specifications for the DSH writing task (Musterprüfungsordnung) thus suggest that the writing task should be designed to preclude the use of formulaic language. However, there is an inherent value of formulaic language for language acquisition and engagement in academic communication. This reflective practice article investigates three texts written by test takers to improve the understanding of chunks in the rating process. The examples reveal that only a few general guidelines can be deduced. In most cases, it is necessary to ascertain whether formulaic sequences serves as an indicator of proficient language usage.
